2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 16

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is underway, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Jimmy, lead blogger at SB Nation's Tennessee Titans blog, Music City Miracles, checks in to make the No. 16 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 16 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Tennessee Titans have selected Kyle Wilson, cornerback, Boise State.

Jimmy says: Jeff Fisher said at the end of 2009 that this off-season would be all about upgrading the defense. The two biggest holes remaining are defensive end and cornerback. Kyle Wilson is the best available corner at this point and may be the best available defensive player. He is also the prototypical Jeff Fisher corner because he is good in run support. Wilson would also help the Titans return game woes from a year ago.

Mocking Dan reacts: With Derrick Morgan going the previous pick, Tennessee would kind of be in a tough spot. The selection of Wilson is a good one, but still a touch early.

But Wilson would give the Titans a man-cover cornerback to team with Cortland Finnegan. That would allow the team's safeties to move around the field more and open up bigger gaps for the defensive line. The Titans defense showed that when the line plays well, the entire defense does. But the secret to that is sound cornerback play, which the team would have with Wilson on board. It would also have one of the best special teams players in this year's draft.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Dez Bryant/WR/Oklahoma State, 2 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 3 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma 4 - Anthony Davis/OT/Rutgers 5 - Sergio Kindle/OLB/Texas

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Titans' pick of Kyle Wilson? Please be sure to check out Music City Miracles for all of your Titans needs.

This makes no sence to me

they have a solid 1st corner, why reach for Wilson at this spot, With the loss of Haynesworth last year and KVB this year they need help on the D line. I would have went with Everson Griffen

but IMO, griffen is even more of a reach…

Possibly

I also think JPP could be the pick here.

by Yankees10 on Mar 29, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you figure that?

He’s #2 on MD’s best available list….Kyle Wilson wasn’t even in the top 5.

by TexansDC on Mar 29, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not as high on Griffen as others…Wilson was a reach but IMO so was griffen…

I see the point, but I probably would have went pass rusher here…Is graham available either?

I would have taken graham here then…I like Graham better than Griffen. I have not been impressed with the tape of griffen. he is inconsistent, and looks very unaware on the field. he has talent but is very raw.

Good pick

Finnegran is solid, but they have 2 CB’s in the NFL still…in the AFC South, its probably a good idea to have 3 or 4!

Wilson may not be as regarded as Joe Haden…probably cuz he played for Boise State and isn’t all that big.

But solid pick. One of the better ones so far in terms of need and fit.

I gave you an A. Very good pick for the Titans.

A defensive lineman would also have worked here, but really they are all much bigger reaches than Wilson. Dunlap, Griffen, Odrick, Price would all work here but getting a CB of Wilson’s calibre is a much better pick.

FYI I think I would go with Dunlap in this spot of the four D linemen I was thinking about.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 29, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

I gave it a C

Weatherspoon, Griffen, Dunlap all would’ve fit well (without being reaches) while you could still get a good CB in round 3 given the depth of this class without reaching a little for Kyle Wilson.

So....

Have you figured out who we took yet? :-)

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Issues aside

He does have talent and is a DE, so it just would’ve been somethng I understood more since the drop off in DEs is pretty big from round 1 to round 3 whereas CB dropoff isn’t too bad.

by TexansDC on Mar 29, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

This was not an early pick. Wilson is probably the best CB in this draft. If he played for Florida, he’d be ranked ahead of Haden.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Mar 29, 2010 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

No

Haden is much better.

by Yankees10 on Mar 29, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. I think Wilson is almost as good. Haden benefits from one of the nations best D-Lines and playing at florida. He also had Major Wright over the top. If wilson had that kind of a safety net, he could be pretty incredible.

Mistake

I was trying to respond to bross09 last post but didnt hit reply.

by Yankees10 on Mar 29, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying haden isn’t better. I say he is, but it is not as far away as people make it out to be. the difference is there, but not huge. it is like the difference between Berry and Earl Thomas…there, but not huge…both are excellent.

Oh ok

My bad I misread your comment. Your right it isnt a huge difference. Berry and Thomas is a perfect example.

by Yankees10 on Mar 30, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

C I think you pulled the trigger too early for Wilson

Debating whether he’s a first round talent is not my department, but players with much higher impact and potential could be had here.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
