Kansas City Chiefs team needs

The rebuilding continues for the Kansas City Chiefs. The recent early first round picks have not paid off the way management would have liked. They are hoping for more of an immediate impact from this year’s first round pick.

1. Nose Tackle

- This division is very 3-4 heavy and having a top notch nose tackle will have a major impact on the defense. Ron Edwards is not the answer but the Chiefs will need to look for help in the later rounds as no nose tackle prospect is worthy of a top 5 pick.

2. Linebacker

- Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays do not fit the bill of what this New England flavored team is looking for at the middle linebacker positions. We all remember the major roles the linebackers played in those excellent Patriot defenses. Is the #5 pick to early for Rolando McClain?

3. Safety

- Mike Brown is aging and injury prone and Jon McGraw is nothing more than a special teams player. The Chiefs have suffered due to their poor safety play and this position needs to be a priority this offseason. I believe Chief fans and management will be very please if they see Eric Berry available at pick #5.

I really doubt they have to pray for Eric Berry. I expect him to be there.

Rams go QB, Detroit DT or LT, Tampa DT, Washington QB or LT, KC……..EB….if they really want him.

Pioli reached last year for Tyson Jackson, why won’t he do it again for a better player like Rolando McClain?

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 3, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Tyson Jackson plays a more important posistion

Also, Pioli had a shot last year to draft an ILB that was better than McClain and he didnt.

by darwithabar on Mar 3, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

HOWEVER

you left out an important aspect as to WHY we didnt Draft Curry and DID draft Jackson

We wanted to play in a 3-4.

2 seasons ago (Dorsey’s rookie year) our DL was HISTORICALLY bad. Offensive Linemen were knocking our Defensive Linemen down or out of the way, getting to the second level and knocking our LB’s on their ass..which would explain why Pollard and Page led the team in tackles that year.

Had we drafted Curry last year..ESPECIALLY since we didnt have any other personnel to play the 3-4, Curry would have gotten knocked on his ass all season long just like our LB’s did the year before.

We can upgrade the NT position but not with a Top 5 pick. Theres noone worth taking, and the best NT is WAY much more of a reach than TJ was last year. Therefore, it IS possible for us to reach and take McClain.

People seem to forget that Pioli drafted Jerod Mayo with the #8 pick.

Also

If STL does take a QB and Suh is there, They will take Suh. No way they go LT with Suh on the board. I could see them passing on McCoy for Okung but not Suh.

by darwithabar on Mar 3, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Suh

wont be there at 5. Theres no way, shape, or form that happens.

A couple years ago, they said the same about Dorsey but the only team at the top of the draft that was expected to take Dorsey was ATL. Nobody knew if ATL would take Ryan or Dorsey. To me, it made sense for them to take Ryan. And Oakland never takes BPA..they take FPA (F=Fastest) and they didnt disappoint.

There are 3 teams who might want Suh. STL I do believe will go with QB. DET..I never know with them but its either Suh or Okung and I believe Suh is more dominant at his position than Okung is..however you gotta protect the QB.

If Suh is there at #3, TB WILL take Suh, not McCoy, no matter who “fits” better. WAS wants a T or QB.

Eric Berry or trade. Thats what its going to be.

by Petey14 on Mar 3, 2010 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Is Suh really a 5 technique?

It seems to me if somehow, someway he was there, they would trade to the highest bidder instead of selecting a guy to play a position he isn’t ideally suited for.

I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.

by Wonko on Mar 3, 2010 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

He is...

an ideal 5 technique. 6’4", 305 lbs. and played a 2-gap system at Nebraska. He is the best 3-4 defensive end in the draft without a doubt. I wan’t the Chiefs to trade Dorsey to Detroit for a swap in the 1st and their 2nd rounder. They can get a high profile DT and a dominant LT in Okung or Buluga if Washington goes LT. They can have their cake and eat too.

Meanwhile, we would get a player that could play the run just as good as Dorsey and have the added ability to bat down passes and knock the QB on his ass. Not to mention an early 2nd rounder that would add another piece to the puzzle.

Draft prediction top 10 - 1. Bradford 2. Suh (Chiefs trade up) 3. McCoy 4. Claussen (trade Campbell to Carolina, trade for J Brown) 5. Okung (Detroit) 6. Berry 7. Haden 8. Campbell 9. Davis (Bills trade for Vick) 10. Morgan (Jags draft Tebow in 2nd round) 2/23/09

I voted trade down

Although I don’t see many teams wanting to trade up in a draft that is so deep.

by Nick Britt on Mar 3, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions

me too... but I'm hopeful

I think you have to throw WR in the list of needs, as well as Center

I would be happy with Berry or McClain, though I think Pioli might just reach for a NT if he feels he needs to.

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* Pioli will make at least one trade in the offseason, and 2 trades during the draft
* I'd prefer "lightning and lightning" as opposed to "lightning and thunder" when it comes to RBs
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* keep Albert at LT, upgrade the positions that NEED upgrading.C, RG, NT, S, LB

The Chiefs have a metric F’’’ton of needs

Trading down would be idea, especially multiple trade downs

Ideal situation:
Assuming a QB is on the board, trade down with CLE, BUF, OAK, JAX or DEN. Then again to MIA (if have prior pick), so they can grab Williams. Require 2nds from each trade plus 3rd/4ths/5ths based on value of picks. Imagine this:
1st Rd: Chiefs draft 1st player in mid-teens (McClain or Thomas)
2nd Rd: Have 4 2nd Rd picks to fill NT (Thomas), CB, OLB (Hughes) and ILB/S
3rd: Draft receiver (Shipley, Ford, etc) and RG (BPA)
4th: Draft C (Walton) and RB (Tate)
5th: RT (Ciron), 2 BPAs

Talk about reloading. 2 trade downs in the first leveraging the needs/desires of those behind us, and we load up on picks in a historically deep draft. You may call it wishful thinking, but if the first tradedown is for QB, and then someone with a 3-4 is drooling over Williams, why not bait the hook, load up on 2nds, and additional picks in 3rd, 4th and 5th rds (probably not that many) and fill holes with talent? It’s always worked for the Patriots, they seem to trade down nearly regardless of what their board says, as draft picks are the currency of the league.

fixed

They will trade down or reach for Dan Williams

The first 3 picks of the draft will be defense. Pioli loves him some defense.
