Blake's First Round Mock

I have various opinions about the draft. I don't have any radical ideas, like McCoy above Suh. Here is my first round. I will defend my picks if anyone asks me to, but I want my mock to get better, and I really don't know every team and their needs thoroughly enough. Criticism is welcomed.

Giants

I would have them take McClain at 15.

It is now known that all the Giants DT’s in 2009 were injured. On the basis they all heal the Giants will not take a DT in the first round this year.

by G Fan in England on Mar 3, 2010 4:08 AM EST reply actions

Wow.

Well..I agree..they’d probably be taking McClain at #15. This is one of a few now that have the Giants passing.

McClain and Price fill needs (yes..there’s a good chance they go Price in round one) but McClain’s a better player.

Ah Free

I have gone off the DT idea – if not McClain it falls back on Thomas/OT/DE depending on who the BPA is.

by G Fan in England on Mar 3, 2010 7:37 AM EST up reply actions

But why DE now?

What did I do!

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 3, 2010 7:41 AM EST up reply actions

You mentioned

JR’s you never have enough pass rushers quote.

Osi had a average season, Kiwi did not do well with his chance and Tuck was injured so we need a pass rushing DE and lo and behold Morgan fits the Giants bill as a pass rushing 4-3 DE.

You take two and two and start a mock draft craze which everyone will follow…

by G Fan in England on Mar 3, 2010 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

I guess..

Well I was just trying to rationalize the DE, Morgan mainly, idea cuz fools are so quick to dismiss the idea cuz of who’s on the roster. Just like the CJ Spiller thing…..all it did was get dismissed..with really no one giving a good reason why it doesn’t help (and still not)

The main point is Morgan is if he’s BPA. That doesn’t mean equal to Price or Williams..that’s if Morgan is a ‘95’ and Price/Williams are say…“85”, then go Morgan..or if another DE is 95..go him.

If Price/Williams/Morgan..some other DE are all “92” or something like that, then I go with a DT. Cuz while the DE’s didn’t play well and were hurt…same excuse for the DT’s.

Overall I think the DL if they come back healthy will be fine. Its the whole Zero safety thing on the roster that’s a problem. MLB could even be solved with Goff…but McClain’s too good.

That’s why 1st round…

1) McClain
2) Earl Thomas
3) Best DL available
4) OT
5) Spiller

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 3, 2010 7:57 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

However, I would be inclined to put OT before DL as there are only a few OT worth taking 15th and if they are all gone we will have our choice from several DL.

I assume you would take Berry before Thomas if he was available?

If McClain and Berry were both available at 10 would you trade up and if so which would you take? I would still be inclined to take McClain…

by G Fan in England on Mar 3, 2010 8:23 AM EST up reply actions

No I don't trade up.

Unless they have extra picks somehow or the trade is only a 4th rounder.

It looks like a deep draft so I don’t see any trading of draft picks for the NYG’s as necessary.

Earl Thomas is not far off Eric Berry..or at least not as far as most think

Did you see

Kirwan’s draft on NFL.com? He has us taking Kindle!!

by G Fan in England on Mar 3, 2010 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

He’s not the only one. I don’t know where Kindle comes from.

If this was last year’s draft I’d be fine with a Kindle type player. It makes no sense with Sintim drafted last year

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 3, 2010 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

I think

it is a maxture of

a He is a LB and we need LB help

b He is a pass rusher and we like pass rushers

The other points about he is a tweener and we drafted Sintim just get in the way.

Do you think anyone else will post on this fanpost?

Weighing in on McClain for the Falcons

If he’s projected to play inside at the NFL level, the Falcons won’t draft him. They have no plans that I’m aware of to switch to a 3-4, and Curtis Lofton is one of the best young ILBs in the league.

No to Denver

Dez had a horrible combine, and he didnt even participate. He showed with his lacksadasical attitude he is not a Denver player at all. We alrdy hav 1 headache in BMarsh, we wont get another. In ur mock either McClain or Dan Williams, and rite now I favor Williams.

Decent Mock

but I can guarantee if Earl Thomas starts to slip into the 20’s the Cowboys will trade up to get him.

by DBroncs1414 on Mar 3, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

it seems like a shallow draft to you non-cowboys fans

but our rookie class was decimated by injures, J. William, Hodge, M. Hamlin, are all guys who we haven’t seen their potential.

by Dr. Cowboy on Mar 3, 2010 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I'd take Graham and McCourty over Odrick

especially Graham. The Colts have a young guy like Odrick they are hoping steps it up from his rookie year to give them a big option at the 3 tech (Fili Moala), they have no one remotely like Graham to spell/backup Freeney and Mathis.

by shake n bake on Mar 3, 2010 12:32 PM EST reply actions

Interestingly enough

I originally had the Colts taking Graham, but decided to switch him with Odrick only so I would have someone for the Saints to take. Obviously a dumb reason, but thanks for the input!

Thanks for the criticism everyone

It is good to hear from logical fans. I wanted to put the mock out here to see how I could improve it. I am in the process of writing a monster mock draft and am currently stuck at the tenth pick. This definitely helps a lot!

I like it alot. The only thing I dont agree with is Joe Haden. I think he hurt himself big time.
Finally, Someone else sees where McClain belongs. Watch the link below for anyone who thinks he is the next Pat Willis. He isnt even as good as Jerod Mayo was in college.

absolutley love it. and if he starts to drop low i could see us trading up to try to grab him

My feeling

is that Mays leapfrogged Thomas with his combine showing, whether it is justified or not. There is a good possibility Earl Thomas lands at 24, he has become an after thought of Mays and Berry.

When your QB thinks that to be successful he needs to hold on to the ball at least 4.5 seconds

and then has to make the 1st and 2nd guy miss your going to give up alot of sacks. Our O-line is better than it appears. The proof is in the first game this year against the Ravens. With a QB making his first start the O-line didn’t allow a sack. Ben played the next game and was sacked 4 times.

Jaguar's pick

If we pick JPP, (which I doubt) you’d wouldn’t need bother putting him as an OLB cuz we aren’t a 3-4 Def. He’s too raw for our GM and I’d think if we did get our 3rd DE in the 3 years high, it’d wouldn’t be such a bust or boom player. We’re small market so we cant afford picking someone like that. I’d soooooooooooooo much rather have Haden, Thomas, Morgan, Spiller, or Rolando Mcclain than JPP.

here's our needs

#1 BAP, Our GM, Gene Smith likes getting the best value and is a hardcore BPA philosophy guy. If Rolando Mcclain, Haden, or someone of that nature escaped the top 9, I’d think we’d get them.
#2 Pass Rush, Whether it’s a LB, DE, or DT, we need some form of pressure on the passer. With the likes of Peyton Manning, Schaub, and a notorious Texas QB in our division, it’s imperative.
#3 Secondary, Reggie Nelson is crap and our other safeties are average at best.
#4 Interior O-Line, With a old, injury-prone interior, we need to put some fresh blood into it if we want to be a Physical team again.
#5 QB, Garrard is over 30 and as our coach said it, Garrard “is not an Elite QB”. Whether it’s Tebow or Lefevour, we need to start grooming someone.

or and here’s a correction to my statement above:
If we pick JPP, (which I doubt) you’d wouldn’t need bother putting him as an OLB cuz we aren’t a 3-4 Def.

Vikings

The Vikings use a 4-3 defense. Jerry Hughes on the Vikings would probably play right defensive end, but that spot is filled by Jared Allen.

A better player available that also fills a need would be Sergio Kindle, or Ryan Mathews.

by medicineball on Mar 3, 2010 9:18 PM EST reply actions

Same position different athletes.

I have read that Hughes will play the OLB on a 3-4 team. He is a pass rushing specialist with little hope of beefing up and ever playing the 4-3 DE position. Kindle can beef up if necessary However, Kindle can be an every down LB in the 4-3 with better coverage skills than Hughes.
But in this draft Kindle went to the Pats. Hughes will not go to the Vikes.

That leaves as BPA for the Vikes the following:
Everson Griffen, Brandon Graham, Jared Odrick, or Ryan Mathews. All are very good but I would probably go Graham. He just looks like a player that will be around for a long time to me.

by Blake Jensen on Mar 4, 2010 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks, LLV

Kindle is off the board here. That should take the Vikes in the direction of Ryan Mathews.

Griffen, Graham, and Odrick would all be good, too. Griffen and Graham are short and would at backup Jared Allen. Odrick is a Penn State defensive lineman, which makes me think he will be a bust.

In this mock, the Vikings might take a cornerback like Devin McCourty, or Dominique Franks. A good tackling cornerback.

by medicineball on Mar 4, 2010 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind Mathews. Just depends on how the coaches view our backups.

Cornerback always makes sense. That McCourtney is fast. Not that a zone defense cares that much about sright line speed.

But tell me why Graham wouldn’t play LB for the Vikes? Spikes and Dunlap are also available in this draft but we rarely mention them.

Dan Williams seems like a bit of a reach

But it depends if Rolando McClain shows up on his pro day and why would we pass on Kindle?

I dont like the KC pick at 5

As a Chargers fan I hope they go safety #5 overall, but I doubt they would be dumb enough to roll the dice with some many safer picks on the board OT wise.

Why wouldn't Cinncinati take Gresham?

They need him. He’s rated fast and strong? Are you worried he isn’t healed?

by lifelongvike on Mar 4, 2010 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

They should take him.

Their defense is pretty solid at the moment. They don’t have a good receiving Tight End and they need more weapons. Carson basically had Chad and Benson last year and that was it.

Lord, forgive me for my transgressions, as well as rosterbation.

by Blake Jensen on Mar 4, 2010 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

There’s much more value available their then a suspect receiving TE. Like a pass rusher, WR, RB, or even a safety.

I dont think its even close to good value

by AirNorval on Mar 4, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

I'm still not sure what your telling me.

Are you saying that the tight end position isn’t worthy of a first round choice or that this year you don’t value Gresham as high as some other players?

I ask because every article I read says Gresham is a great prospect but some aren’t sure about his injury.I was curious where you come down on this issue.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 4, 2010 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think

if the explosion is still there, they should take him. If it is not, they don’t. The only positions in football not worthy of first round picks are those on special teams. So if you can get a Dallas Clark or Vernon Davis late in the first round and it’s a need, I would do it.

Lord, forgive me for my transgressions, as well as rosterbation.

by Blake Jensen on Mar 4, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think you can say the a certain position isnt worth a first round pick, cause there’s always exceptions. Obviously the best positional value is found in QB, OT, edge rushers, and corners; if you dont believe me look at the salaries.

What Im saying is Gresham would be low value, at the end of the first round for a couple of reasons. These reasons include the better players on the board, the fact that the Bungels are a running team, Greshams injury, and the fact that very good pass catching TEs can be had in round 2 and 3.

If Earl Thomas fell to us

That would be amazing. Sadly, I don’t think the Eagles would take him anyway. Even with our glaring need at safety. Andy is all about his lines so I would see a DE of some sort. I favor Graham, but Dunlap seems to be getting favored by a lot of mocks.
Maurkice Pouncey is another choice, because we will most likely be without Jammal Jackson for the majority of the year and he would be able to assume a starting spot at C or G if/when Shawn Andrews back starts hurting him again. We have Nick Cole probably slated to play center if one of the Andrews’ do actually make it back, and Cole is not the answer there.
Me personally I like Weatherspoon. We need a OLB and he will be a great addition to our team.

My personal requests are Weatherspoon, Graham, Pouncey (assuming Berry and Thomas are off the board) Andy will probably look at it like Dunlap, Graham, Pouncey, trade down. Just my thoughts.
