2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 22
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Richard Hill, lead blogger at SB Nation's New England Patriots blog, Pats Pulpit, checks in to make the No. 22 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 22 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the New England Patriots have selected Jared Odrick, defensive lineman, Penn State.
Richard Hill says: The Patriots have had a pressing need for an improved pass rush for a couple seasons. The last minute trade of Richard Seymour to Oakland and the recent departure of free agent Jarvis Green to Denver didn't help the situation. The Patriots have two definite needs in this draft - a solid 3-4 DE and a solid 3-4 OLB. This draft is extremely deep with 3-4 pass rushers, but no so much with space-eating, double-team-commanding, run-stuffing 3-4 defensive ends. Due to the position demographic of this draft, the New England Patriots must draft a 3-4 DE, and Penn State's Jared Odrick is a versatile player who fits this need.
Out of the two potential 3-4 DEs to grab at this point in the draft, the 6'5", 304-pound Odrick is the only perfectly sized 3-4 DE who can fit the Patriots' scheme. Florida's Carlos Dunlap appears to be another possible choice, but at 277 pounds, Dunlap is far too light to succeed with the Patriots. Odrick has the perfect body size and skill set to fit into the position Seymour left vacant. With the ability to bull rush into the backfield when single covered and the capability to push around double teams, Odrick should be able to immediately step into the DE position and open up lanes for whatever linebackers line up behind him. 3-4 DEs for the Patriots must be able to eat up blockers for the linebackers and stop the run. Odrick is more than capable of doing both.
Another reason for selecting Odrick has to do with draft depth in other positions. The Patriots should be looking to fill the DE, OLB, OT, TE and possibly CB positions early in the draft. With so many players in the other positions still on the board, selecting Odrick is also based upon the chance that the other top players drop down to the Patriots due to how many still remain. The TE position for the Patriots is a block first, catch second job, and all the top tight ends are receivers first, which means that their strengths most likely won't be capitalized in our offense. The top project OTs still remain (think Sebastian Vollmer 2.0), so there's no reason to select one yet. Only Brandon Graham has been picked from the rich OLB crop, which means there will be plenty to pick from later on. Since no first-round quality CB dropped, that leaves DE as the lone position to address.
Mocking Dan reacts: Odrick is a good, smart pick, but I was surprised this wasn't Sergio Kindle. There are plenty of solid 3-4 end prospects in this year's draft and Kindle is the premier 3-4 linebacker. Although New England should be able to get a good 3-4 linebacker in the second round, passing on the best one available was a surprise.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma, 3 - Anthony Davis/OT/Rutgers, 4 - Sergio Kindle/OLB/Texas, 5 - Ryan Mathews/RB/Fresno State

Very smart pick
John Thornton the former Bengal and Titans DT loves this guy and think hes the 3rd best DT in the draft (and Thornton knows his linemen). And i’ve also heard that scouts and GMs are purring over this guy. Fills a need and a talented player… can’t ask much more of a draft pick.

Ideal pick
Kindle is a bit too much of a finesse rusher and also the drop off from him to the 2nd round 3-4 OLB isn’t too substantial.
I like this pick a lot
They’ve got 3 2nd rounders so they can end up grabbing a Jerry Hughes or Koa Misi. Odrick really fills a hole on this team.
Good pick, especially since the Jets might have grabbed him later.
I like your logic regarding the players to be drafted and your three second round picks. Excellent 3-4 OLBs and versatile, project OLs will be available then.
And also, I don’t like Kindle for the reasons stated in an earlier comment.
It's the right pick
I’d love to get Kindle or Hughes, but the analysis is exactly right — we need a 3-4 DE and a 3-4 OLB, and we can still get a good OLB in the second round.
Pats need pass rushers
Thats there biggest need. They just drafted Ron Brace last year. I would have gone Kindle.
My thought...
…is that there is very little to differentiate Kindle from the other DE/OLB tweeners in this draft- and those players will be available in the 2nd.

You convinced me
Your right there are plenty of these in the second round. They have three second rounders so they could easily get a guy like Ricky Sapp, Koa Misi or Jerry Hughes. It also appears Brace is a NT not an end. So Odrick is the logical choice.
Ordick is a solid pick, my only other thought here would be Pouncey
As noted by Dr. Hill it’s a deep draft for end rushers, so while Ordick is a very good chance there are other DT/DE’s who can project similarly to end for the Pats.
Pouncey on the other hand is pretty far ahead on most boards from his competition.
With that side I still like this pick
I thought he might have been, but I only scrolled back to 14 or so
Didn’t think he’d go @ 11. That’s actually a bit surprising
I didn't select Kindle...
…because I don’t think he’ll be able to be as effective at the Pro level as he was at the collegiate level. Kindle does well by running past the offensive lines and using his speed to make plays. He has trouble when he’s engaged. I expect that he’ll get engaged much more frequently as a Pro and, as a result, his performance will drop.
Good Pick
This was a good pick, not a sexy pick, but games are won and lost in the trenches.

True Dat
Good pick
My life has been a trivial pursuit. Trivia: where three roads meet.

Prior to looking at this, I was on the fence between Kindle and Odrick.
The reasons you explained, Hill, might have convinced me to believe Odrick is the best pick.
The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL
The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back
The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: Allergic to second periods
Of course, Odrick is only a great pick...
…if the draft falls this way and Graham was the only OLB taken at this point.

I give it a B
We really can’t ask for much more and I’m expecting this pick to be made. Under the circumstances it deserves an A. Im still hoping Graham slides down to us. Odrick may still be the better pick but Im a fan of Graham’s leadership (something this defense needs!). There are a few others that I could only dream of slipping this far (McClain, Spiller, Morgan). And Im aware Morgan would play OLB but Id still take that gamble in a heartbeat.
Great pick. Odrick is going to have an amazing career. The DT’s this year are pretty good, especially compared to the terrible DT’s of last year.
