2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 23

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Brandon, lead blogger at SB Nation's Green Bay Packers blog, Acme Packing Company, checks in to make the No. 23 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 23 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers have selected Sergio Kindle, outside linebacker, Texas.

Brandon says: It might be my dream draft if the Packers sit at No. 23 and are able to select Texas LB Sergio Kindle. It wouldn't hurt to add a cornerback or offensive tackle, but replacing the pass rush provided by Aaron Kampman should be their No. 1 priority. In this scenario, OT Anthony Davis is still available too, but his recent pro day absence has raised some real concerns, and appropriately, he's sliding down draft boards. I'm less concerned about offensive tackle for 2010 since they kept veteran free agent tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher for at least one more season. They'll draft a tackle at some point, but now they don't have to reach.

There is some lobbying at Acme Packing Company for TCU's Jerry Hughes, who has nearly identical combine and/or pro day results, but his transition to playing in space as a linebacker apparently hasn't looked too smooth according to some reports. For that reason, I'm going with Kindle, who also could become a pass rushing terror but played linebacker in college.

Mocking Dan reacts: If the Packers decide that those offensive tackles are good enough – and I'm not sure they are – another pass rusher is a good fit. But to pass on someone like Anthony Davis is kind of surprising.

But if pass rusher is the pick, Kindle is a good one. He's much more physical than Hughes and more of a sure thing. He can also put his hand down, which would give Green Bay another look for its defense.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma, 3 - Anthony Davis/OT/Rutgers, 4 - Ryan Mathews/RB/Fresno State, 5 - Charles Brown/OT/USC

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Green Bay's selection of OLB Sergio Kindle? Please be sure to check out Acme Packing Company for all of your Packers needs.

Wait..I take it back!

F!! Bruce Campbell or Tony Davis for chrissake!!

THey may be boom or bust, but given what Rogers is considering the OL was as bad as it was..wouldn’t it make sense to try and see if one of these two could be boom?

I could imagine how good Rogers would be if he wasn’t the only one wearing a green uni, while the rest of the Pack had the whites on.

Good point

but do they fit our zone blocking scheme? are they quick and athletic? If we draft an OT in the first round, he better be a perfect match.

Davis is the better one, Campbell is more athletic though.

Campbell pound for pound

may be the most athletic player in the entire draft, let alone LT.

So yea..I’d say so.

He's a freak at the Combine

but he stilled underperformed in game film. Bruce Campbell worries me.

I didn't really see that...

Only negative with him is what is he? He played in 17 games his whole career, so is he injury prone? Tough to gauge cuz there’s really not much playing time there.

He’s a bit raw cuz of that..but if you have a good OL coach (which given their track record with developing OL’s..the Packers do) and especially if you guys got a zone scheme…Campbell should have your team salivating to get him.

Yes, I’d put him in the boom or bust category. But less so then JPP and less so then Tony Davis, cuz Davis’ work ethic is a HUGE ?

Here’s a scout who did some HW on Campbell.

Really, tough not to like him reading it. Given his combine and the need for an OT, I don’t think the Raiders pass (and I think it would work out very well)

The injury stuff is a giant red flag tho..and the Pack DID get burned on Justin Harrel too who’s a similar situation…so there’s plenty of reasons to not like Campbell if your the Packers too

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 31, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree I hope the Packers pass on him in real life.

by Yankees10 on Mar 31, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll give it an A

Passing on Anthony Davis seems like a smart move right now. There’s options in round 2 and 3 for linemen. If they can address them there then that’ll be good.

Getting a starting OLB is important. Kindle’s a good fit.

by TexansDC on Mar 31, 2010 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

there are options at OLB in the second round also. I would have definitely went OL with this pick

by The Licensed Pessimist on Mar 31, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I kinda thought

the Packers were set at the LB position. IMO, they need to replace Bigby.

by hickenizgriz on Mar 31, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No

Packers still need LB help to replace Kampman.

by Yankees10 on Mar 31, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Kampman was basically irrelevant as a OLB. Very good as a DE in the 4-3....but not so since in that scheme switch.

Brad Jones was actually pretty solid as an OLB.

Someone like Kindle’s got more potential and is probably a better fit for the 3-4..but there’s plenty of 2nd and 3rd round guys too.

I dunno if you can say the same thing about the OT depth, which they could use I’d think more over an OLB.

Get HWSNBN...and they will come

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 31, 2010 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Brad Jones did alright, but nothing special that says he should be a definite starter and no one should be brought in.

by Yankees10 on Mar 31, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

never said they shouldn't bring anyone in.

just think that given Jones is decent, and Rodgers at a lot of dirt, protecting him’s a bit more of a concern wouldn’t it?

Especially given the OLB depth vs the OT depth?

You’d rather go Kindle then pray someone lik Saffold falls?

Or bank on Campbell being more of a boom prospect, then land Ricky Sapp in round 2?

Get HWSNBN...and they will come

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 31, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I still would go Kindle in the first. Pick in OT in the second. I wouldnt mind somebody like Veldheer. I know that is a little bit of a reach but I think he can develop into a good player in a year or so and after Clifton and Tauscher retire/leave whatever, he could start.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Kindle is the BPA of 3-4 OLB Prospects

So it would make sense to draft him, but yeah, we could use an OT too though. Tough call, but if Kindle is there, I say we take Kindle.

I think both an OT or an OLB are equally good picks here. However, go with the BPA and IMO, that is kindle.

by bross09 on Apr 1, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Kindle isn’t even the unanimous BPA at this point. I’ve seen many mocks that had Kindle falling to the second or third.

The only way you’d take anything other than OL for the Pack at this point is if that player is a surefire steal. The ranking of the DE’s and OLB’s after graham in this draft are more undefinite than they have ever been. And it would be really bad to take when they could easily be there in the second, or there could be someone of equal skill set.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 1, 2010 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

because some mocks have a guy falling, he isn’t the BPA? was Brady Quinn the BPA for a while in the NFL draft when he was drafted? guys drop…that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bad pick or he wasn’t BPA or wasn’t even BPA for the team.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Apr 1, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously, but we’re talking position value at this moment. GB should obviously be thinking OL with this pick and if not, it should be a player whose positional value is greater than with an OL and offers some great security.

For example look at the CB position. There is no question about the ranking of talent. So there is little risk with selecting one over an obvious need; i.e.Wilson is the second best CB in the draft, and after him most likely Jackson is the next best CB, then maybe McCourty.

With the OLB position JP-P, Kindle, Griffin, Hughes, Sapp and maybe Misi are damn there dead even. The person who chose this pick chose the riskiest position based on talent in this draft instead of going with a safer pick which was also their biggest need. And that’s what makes this a bad pick.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 1, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

GB should obviously be thinking OL with this pick

Wow, you know green bay’s needs better than the writers there? Like someone said, they have old tackles, but one of the main problems on the line was injuries and guard play. when Chad Clifton played at LT, they were good. The problem was the rest of the line. their interior of the line was dreadful and the RT position was one of the worst in the league (maybe even worse than the browns). Then, in the 2nd half of the season, Clifton was able to stay healthy and they were able to resign (finally) Mark Tauscher. the Tauscher and Clifton combination has been one of the better Tackle combos this decade. once they had both healthy and playing together, the protection improved. it still was weak up the middle, but that is why you go get an interior lineman. still, both tauscher and clifton don’t have many years left so an eventual replacement is needed.

I don’t believe that Kindle IS miles ahead of the guys you listed, but I would not say it is dead even at all.

Green bay was one of the best defenses in the league last year. they were ranked top 10 in just about every statistical category (especially all the key ones like INTs, yards, ppg, etc…) The one main category where they weren’t top 10? getting to the QB. they are solid in this area, but definitely could use to get better. if they get a guy like Kindle and he can rush the passer effectively, they may have one of the most fearsome Defenses in the league. Fixing the one problem on defense isn’t a need? I disagree.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

I can see Kindle possibly falling to the second. Its unlikely in my opinion but I can see it. I cant see at all him falling to the third.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Veldheer is not worth a high pick. The reason he got hype was because everyone thought he would have really long arms. Turns out they are midget arms for such a tall guy.

Pick

Right position… WRONG player!!!

Hughes has FAR better production, and FAR better combine numbers!!! 40 yd dash is pretty equal, but in the 10 yd split Hughes put up a 1.53 as compared to nearly a 1.70. EXPLOSIVENESS defines Hughes!!! As a pass rusher Hughes is so much better its not even funny!! Also in the 3 cone drill and 20 shuttle which measure quickness and change of direction Hughes was #1 and #4, whereas Kindle wasn’t even top 10!!! THis means that Hughes will be better in coverage cuz he can get in and out of breaks quicker!!! In Run D, Kindle MIGHT be a little better, but Hughes was going against OT every down!!! As a 34 OLB, he will be going up against RB and TE… NOT OT!!!

Hughes should be better in every way than Kindle w/in a years time!!! And it won’t even be close!!!

by Strohman on Mar 31, 2010 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

As a Packer fan...

I’d be very upset if we drafted Anthony Davis. Davis will probably be a solid OT for years to come, but he does not fit the zone blocking scheme. On the other hand, if OT Charles Brown is available at #23, then we have ourselves a debate. Our first round pick is either going to be OT or OLB. Considering Sergio Kindle is the best 3-4 OLB prospect in the draft, you can’t go wrong with that selection.

Now it leads to the debate between Hughes vs. Kindle. Kindle is thought to be the best all around prospect. Hughes is thought to be the best speed rusher. One thing to look at is Kindle will be lining up often in front of the TE, so his size will work to his advantage. Kindle does a better job than Hughes in shedding blocks. If we get Hughes, we are getting the black version of Clay Matthews III. Either way I’d be happy, but if Sergio Kindle is available, I take him. My hunch is he won’t drop any later than #22 though.

Very good pick.

The best OT in the draft is still available. And so are 2 that would fit in a ZBS

Rodger Saffold OL Indiana

makes the most sense. he can play inside until kicking out to eventually replace clifton. but i can see them going pass rusher

I would have been tempted

to go with Saffold if I had been choosing for the Packers.

With Anthony Davis, Bruce Campbell, and Charles Brown still on the board, I dont think there is anyway they would take him over them.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

A lot of dissention to this pick

I too would have gone Oline if Taucher or Clifton hadn’t resigned. The main problem with the Packers O-line wasn’t at the tackle position after those two got back in the game. The issue was the subpar guard and center play. With both Pouncey and Iupati gone, avoiding high bust factor on the O-line was a decent idea. In addition, while the loss of Kampman wasn’t horrible, it’s not like Brad Jones is going to be anything more than a stopgap. Kindle provides the strong side explosion to go with Matthew’s weak side. throw in a healthy Raji and Pickett and you have a great pass rush to alleviate the pressure on the corners and safeties.

Personally, I think the pack is going to trade down and accumulate more picks.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
