2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 24

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. JasonB, lead blogger at SB Nation's Philadelphia Eagles blog, Bleeding Green Nation, checks in to make the No. 24 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 24 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles have selected Anthony Davis, offensive tackle, Rutgers.

JasonB says: Going into these mock drafts, I'm always sure to remind myself to not overthink the pick too much. I'm a big fan of taking the BPA, especially in the first round and especially when you aren't picking at the top. Last year, Jeremy Maclin fell to the Eagles in our SBN writers mock (and in real life as it turned out), and I took him despite not seeing WR as a huge need. This year I'm pretty much doing the same with the selection of Rutgers OT Anthony Davis. Here's a guy who a lot of people have rated as a potential Top 15 pick at a premier position sitting on the board at 24, and I don't think the Eagles would pass that up.

After spending a first round pick last year to acquire LT Jason Peters and extending RT Winston Justice during the season, you may think the Eagles don't have a need at OT, but that's not necessarily the case. For one, the Eagles generally select college OTs to play everywhere along the line. So it's certainly possible that Davis could be asked to slide inside to play RG, where he first played at Rutgers and is a position that's absolutely a question mark for the team. Plus, despite that fact that Winston Justice played well I'm not married to him as my RT for the next five years.

Beyond that, though, last year showed that the Eagles have very little depth along the offensive line. The fact that Jason Peters was injured early in the game against Oakland more or less lost them that game. King Dunlap was an absolute turnstile, McNabb barely had time to breathe, and the running game couldn't get going in that game. Stacey Andrews never got healthy, Shawn Andrews never got healthy (and he's gone now), LT Todd Herremans missed games at the start of the year, and C Jamaal Jackson missed games late. The Eagles started a guy that was slated to be a backup at every single position along the line at some point last year. If it weren't for the fact that Winston Justice miraculously turned himself from bust to solid starter, who knows how bad things could have gotten last year.

The line is a vital part of any successful offense, and something the Eagles are going to have to shore up whether it's Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb under center. Maybe Davis provides us with a starting RG, a starting RT, or maybe just some good depth early on. Either way, he's worth the pick here at 24.

Mocking Dan reacts: It kind of seems like the selections are going a team late with today's picks. To me, Sergio Kindle should have gone to New England and Davis should have gone to Green Bay. But that's neither here nor there. What it really means is that Philly gets a player who has a chance to be very good.

Davis might have as much talent as any tackle in this year's class. He's rugged and physical at the point of attack and has quick feet. But he's also kind of aloof and doesn't give great effort all the time. That's why it should be no surprise if he falls this far in the "real" draft. Davis would kind of be a luxury pick for the Eagles, but he'd be a good luxury pick. Like Jason sort of said, he's a right guard at the very least. But should he go to the Eagles, he should be able to supplant Justice. Good pick.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Jermaine Gresham/TE/Oklahoma, 3 - Ryan Mathews/RB/Fresno State, 4 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 5 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Philadelphia's selection of OT Anthony Davis? Please be sure to check out Bleeding Green Nation for all of your Eagles needs.

dick lol

I absolutely decline to offer my opinion on or read any posts about the McNabb v. Kolb debacle. Those posts never end and I choose to sit back and wait to see what happens. This is going to be a long offseason.

I think they need a pass rusher. Everson Griffen or Carlos Dunlap would have made sense in my opinion. Davis isnt a bad pick though. I give it a B.

Don't want either

They’re both too flaky (Dunlop in particular), and with the acquisition of Tapp I’m willing to wait a round or two for someone else to go on the other side of Cole.

I’d go O-Line, personally. The interior of the line needs improvement, and with Iupati gone you either draft Pouncey or an OT who can shift inside until they’re otherwise needed (like they did with Andrews, who wound up sticking there). If this is indeed the plan for Davis I’m good with that, but I’d do that only if I’m not convinced that Pouncey’s a better, more polished option.

Pouncey is gone at pick # 11.

I think in the real draft, Pouncey or Iupati may be available to you at this spot.

A

this kid is big and strong and we can start him day one or this way we have a backup guard or tackle plus we can get a good linebacker in the second and a safety in the third and a cornerback in the third plus dont forget about possible trades for draft picks. mcnabb for second round pick and gocong for a fourth round pick and with those picks in the second round defensive end and withe the fourth we get another wide reciever for the future backup role jackson and maclin are human they get hurt too and with our fourth round pick we get a running back. 6th linebacker/defensive end and 7th offensive guard 7th linebacker

by philly phils on Mar 31, 2010 11:53 PM EDT reply actions

dunlap will fall to the second round if we trade mcnabb then we get dunlap and my bad instead of a wr in the fourth they will get a quarterback

by philly phils on Mar 31, 2010 11:55 PM EDT reply actions

Outstanding choice

I would be very happy with this pick.

by InsultComicDog on Mar 31, 2010 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

my draft if we get davis first

1. anthony davis tackle
2via mcnabb trade; carlos dunlap defensive end
2 daryl washington outside linebacker
3. nate allen safety
3 chris cook coenerback
4 tony pike quaterback via gocong trade
4 ben tate runningback

by philly phils on Apr 1, 2010 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

seriously doubt pike lasts to the 4th round

by BadCo'09 on Apr 1, 2010 3:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Or Nate Allen or Chris Cook to the third or Tate to the fourth.

Move all those guys up one round and you may have it right. That includes Dunlap. He will go in the first round, late maybe, but he will go by # 32.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 1, 2010 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt Allen lasts till the 3rd round and Pike lasts to the 4th.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Same with Chris Cook

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

There is a good chance Pike lasts till the fourth or even later. McCoy, Teblow, Snead, and Brown will all go before him, and the QB’s suck so bad in this draft that I wouldn’t be surprised if most of them last till the 4/5/6

by The Licensed Pessimist on Apr 1, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

I doubt Jevan Snead and Jarrett Brown go before Pike. Pike is far better than both. Pike may end up going late 2nd. Its possible he could last till 4th, but cant see Snead and Brown going over him.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

doubt it...

While I think he’d go over Brown, Tony Pike has no upside. He’s got a noodle arm and really isn’t all that accurate.

Snead may have stunk last year, but he’s still a first round talent even if he’s not all together right now.

Get HWSNBN...and they will come

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 1, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I was sure they'd go with Griffen.

I know their D-Line was nonexistent last year.

The 2010 New York Mets: Maybe it's the Phillies' turn to have 95% of its roster on the DL

The 2009 New England Patriots: At least we got our division title back

The 2009-10 New Jersey Devils: Allergic to second periods

I like this pick from a value point of view, but disagree on the need of this pick.

I realize we had little depth at OT last year, but I also feel the Oakland game was the worst case scenario. If Herremans was in the game, he would have slid over to left tackle and done a much better job. He plays left tackle every preseason and looks adequate at the position. In addition, we also have Tofou (or whatever his name is) and Stacy Andrews who I think should be given a chance this year to prove they can at least be a back up.

I think making a 1st round pick on a stud OL that can only play OT or OG is basically shutting the door on Stacy Andrews ever cracking the starting 5. In addition, it isn’t giving Tofou a chance to win a job coming off of IR.

Regardless….this is classic Eagles drafting and I agree with it from that standpoint. Every year I think it would be awesome to draft a top center…but then I have to remember that the 2 centers Reid has acquired have been undrafted or drafted in the 6th round, and worked out fabulously.

by Clyde Simmons on Apr 1, 2010 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

I gave the pick an F, but it might be a D+.

IMO guys that have motivational issues have a very low possibility of success in the NFL. And Davis is showing all the signs of a guy who does not love to play football and is immature to boot. Having said that, if there is a team that can afford to take a shot like this, it would be the Eagles. Davis can go inside for them and they can develop him slowly and possibly move him to a Tackle position later. It could work out.

But if they want to take a chance on someone, I would go with Carlos Dunlap DE. He has some of the same concerns as Davis, but he fills a more important need for the Eagles. The Eagles have an excellent D Line but this would really solidify that group, filling in the one weakness at one of the DE positions. Dunlap has the potential to really become a dominant DE. He has pretty well the same measureables as JPP, but has played at a higher level in college for longer. Actually, the more I think of it, JPP or Everson Griffen are valid options as well. Three DEs with amazing potential, but a lot of risk.

I think the risk on the DEs is lower, and the rewards will be higher, than with Anthony Davis.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 1, 2010 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

I actually agree with everything you have said.

by Clyde Simmons on Apr 1, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

regardless, if you would give the Dunlap pick an A, than I believe this one deserves an A as well. They are both important positions with the same question marks. Both would fill in nicely for the Eagles.

by Clyde Simmons on Apr 1, 2010 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you as far as I am not being consistent.......

but I would much rather take the risk on Dunlap than Davis. I would not say that the Dunlap pick is an A, I just said it was a better pick than Davis. Call it a B.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 1, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

B (no plus.. maybe a minus)

Its a safe pick, not flashy IMO. I’d have rather seen a DB or DL. Though I admit I haven’t taken a look at the first 23 picks to see if a good one was still available… not A worthy but not bad.

by Sparki on Apr 1, 2010 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

name one defensive end playing now that is a pro bowler

something tells me that dunlap truely lacks what it will take for him to be a all star caliber player but it is hard to pass on him with the shape the eagles defense was in. I wouldn’t be mad if they picked him though eagles do a good job of developing players

by philly phils on Apr 1, 2010 9:56 PM EDT reply actions

Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, Robert Mathis, Mario Williams, Jared Allen, Trent Cole.
