BUST-O-METER: Jason Pierre- Paul

The NFL Draft is suppose to be a time where teams fill their rosters with young promising players that will ensure success in the future, unfortunately this isn’t always the case. Year in and Year out players are selected and fail to live up to their potential and are labeled BUSTS. These Busts could potentially have a crippling affect on a franchises future. Some of the more famous draft Busts are Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Lawrence Phillips, and Ki-Jana Carter. How a bust is determined is too undefined to get into details about.

A prime example is the 6 straight losing seasons following the Bengals failure to develop Akili Smith into a capable NFL starter. Compare that to the 6 straight winning seasons produced by the Chargers after drafting Phillip Rivers in 2004. Of course these players are not solely responsible for their team’s success or failures but they did have a major impact.

After looking over the players projected to go in the first round I was amazed how many gave me an uneasy feeling. I am going to start a weekly BUST-O-METER and examine those players who I feel have the biggest red flags. I encourage that all the readers get involved and suggest potential busts of the week. You can email me by clicking the mail link by my user profile. I also encourage good conversation on the comment sections. Leave comments to help me feel better about a player or continue to add on the pile.

Player:

Jason Pierre-Paul- DE- USF

BUST-O-METER:

8 out of 10

Thoughts:

Pierre- Paul has a lot of physical talent and proved that with his impressive work at the combine but this prospect doesn’t come without concerns. Pierre- Paul only has 1 year of major college football experience and that is a cause for concern. It’s been an epidemic in the NFL that organizations ignore production and focus on the athletic abilities. This strategy has hurt franchises more often than not. I think Pierre- Paul's bust potential is higher due to where he is projected to be selected. There is a lot of people projecting him in the top ten and that’s a dangerous position to select an unproven prospect. I don’t want to ignore the fact that Pierre- Paul has a lot of talent and could turn into a sack master but I feel he has a high potential to BUST.

I just don't see how anyone can justify him over Derrick Morgan.

His combine wasn’t even that impressive, on par with Dunlap, Morgan, Hughes, even Daniel Te’o-Nesheim.

Pierre-Paul vs. Morgan

How often do DEs need to run a 40? When they ran the 3-4 OLB candidates through the coverage drills at the combine, Morgan looked fluid and changed directions easily. Pierre-Paul could not change directions without stumbling. I was actually shocked at just how well Morgan did – you could argue that he is the best OLB candidate in the draft as well as DE.

Look at his stats and his film.

He is supposedly going to be a fierce pass rusher, but in college he had 6 sacks? He’s athletic, but he plays like a basketball player. He gives up on plays that get away from him, he has no clue what to do with a blocker if a very rudimentary move fails, and he rarely seems to really drive into a play.

He always seems to be reverting to Basketball. Keeping himself upright, waiting to react to the ball. To change that mentality. . . I just don’t see that happening.

If he is given time and doesn’t give up on playing football he could be very good, he’s incredibly athletic but also incredibly raw. He needs to relearn everything.

Maybe he should have been a TE … but I’m guessing he wasn’t fast enough …

Just one point

The Chargers did not draft Rivers. The Giants drafted Rivers and traded him to the Chargers for Eli…

What I want to know is what the crap happened to George Selvie?

You’d figure he’d be the one soaking all the hype that Pierre-Paul is enjoying and yet he’s fallen off the face of the earth, like Calais Campbell 2 drafts ago.

He’s still alive.

Its just JPP’s blowing up the combine (as expected). Selvie’s not nearly as physically gifted..not saying much cuz JPP is a freak.

But if he’s put in the right situation…like say…OLB for a 3-4 team, I’d be that Selvie becomes a better NFL player then JPP

Yeahh, I know.

I meant that both were initially considered elite prospects and then vanished around draft time.

Selvies a big reason JPP got duff this year

Selvie commanded enough attention and game planning to allow someone else to shine.

I dont think he will be a bust but I dont think he will ever be as good as they say.

Same

He has potential, and I think he will live up to the hype. If he’s a top ten pick, he’ll be regarded as a disappointment though, he needs some time to develop.

I don't thnk there should be the decent player option

All the hype being placed on him, if he doesn’t play at probowl level he is a bust

I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.

So what do you do with an 8/10 bust guy?

Presume that every single NFL team thinks he has an 8 of 10 chance on busting. What do you do? Does that make him a 3rd rounder? 2nd Round? Late 1st? It is pretty apparent that extremely athletic players have a greater chance on making a team than an ordinary athletic player. This guy is raw but has improved each and every year he played football. He came from Jr. College and made the transition with little problem.

He has great potential. Every team needs this type of player on their team.. Teams at the top of the draft can’t afford to wait for talent to develop. Teams in the lower 1/3rd sure can. I suspect that any team outside of the top 12 that finds no flaw to his game, except inexperience, will look at drafting him in the first.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 5, 2010 10:51 AM EST reply actions

the thing is, he’s highly boom or bust..that’s the problem.

I don’t see how his potential is any more then that of say…Derrick Morgan. The difference is, Morgan is pretty polished for a prospect, especially a junior.

Morgan’s bust rate is very low and the likeliehood of him being a solid..above average starter for many years (kinda like Justin Smith or Andre Carter) is very high.

Pierre Paul might be Jevon Kearse. He might also be Jarvis Moss.

Its also cuz he’s gonna go a lot higher then he should. Late first is the highest he should go..but top 15 is more likely (hopefully NOT #15…I’d throw a tantrum)

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 5, 2010 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

I agree FB. But the only reason he is unpolished is the inexperience. That comes

Experience comes quick in the NFL. But I agree. He is a bottom third 1st rounder. If he goes #15 it will take me 10 minutes to quit rolling on the floor from laughter. But if he gets to #30 I will be rooting very hard for him.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

JPP

I wouldn’t have started my Bust-O-Meter with JPP. It sets the bar too high since he is by far the most likely player to bust in this year’s first round. He reminds me Vernon Gholston. Freak athlete, was never really great in college, everyone sort of knew he would bust, but he was drafted way too high anyway… sound familiar? I wouldn’t go near JPP anywhere before the 3rd round… let alone the top 10.

by invisibulman on Mar 5, 2010 3:04 PM EST reply actions

Agreed, he reminds me too much of Vernon Gholston.
