Indianapolis Colts team needs

Another successful season is in the books for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts dominated the regular season and make it all the way to the Super Bowl, so this team isn’t going to have too many needs to fill. However, the draft is important to improve immediately and to ensure future success.

1. Offensive Tackle

- Charlie Johnson is not a good fit at left tackle. The Colts need to focus on stabilizing the offensive line and protecting Peyton Manning. At pick #31 there will be limited options because many teams have offensive line needs. There are some rumors that the Colts might consider signing Ravens OT Jared Gaither who has a first round tender. If not they might have to hope someone falls to their spot.

2. Cornerback

- There is a good chance that Marlin Jackson moves on in free agency. The Colts do have some young talent but you could never have enough cornerback help. At the end of the first round someone like Kareem Jackson and Patrick Robinson could be available.

3. Defensive End

- Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are a very good pair but there is an issue with depth. For a team with little needs finding depth at importation positions is a key to sustaining success. Later round possibilities include Corey Wooten, George Selvie, and Brandon Lang.

Spot on

I’d rank those needs the same way, with an emphasis on a CB who can return kicks, but not to overpay for one. So my list would go like this:

1. OT-Obviously need one, everyone knows this
2. G/C-Saturday’s old, DeVann isn’t good. I’d draft a great center 10 picks too early before reaching on an O-tackle if all the “sure fire” ones are gone, especially considering tackles’ bust potential.
3. DE-I really want Brandon Graham in the first if there aren’t better o-line options. With Freeney’s age and Brock getting cut, this is a potential problem area.
4. CB-I’d rank CB second if they could get one who can both cover #1s and return kicks. Otherwise, this is a very deep draft for CBs and you can get one at the end of the third, or even the end of the fourth, who could upgrade the empty spot in our rotation. Chances are, the Colts’ special teams blocking is too bad for a great college returner to make an immediate impact anyway, and there are far too many other needs to address first. Until the Cotls can turn an average return man into an above average one with blocking I don’t see the sense in wasting a high pick on a guy who can return but not cover. That said, the Colts have drafted some cut-worthy DBs in recent years. If they’re going to get screwed on d-talent, it might as well be for a guy who can at least compete for the return job.

As for Gaither, I’d absolutely love him at RT. He’s a mauler, and would allow the Colts to slide Diem over to RG. Gaither’s much better than anyone they could reasonably get at the end of the first, barring a major slip from one of the studs. They’d still have to address LT, but they could do that in round two if they lucked out and got a guy like Roger Saffold.

However, I’d be shocked if the Ravens didn’t match him right away.

Don't we already have

something like 12 former centers on the roster? I assume someone like Pollack might slide over to back up Saturday.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Mar 8, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

That's the problem

Polian can’t draft them. Pouncey plays C, RG and RT. From what we can tell, Pollack can’t play any of those positions, or at least couldn’t even crack the rotation last year. Pouncey’s better by all accounts. The long-term vision for a guy like Pouncey would be for him to start at RG and take over for Saturday when he retires. So if we could get him and a guy like Saffold in the first two rounds you’ve got two immediate starters with Pollack, Ugoh, Richard, Johnson and Devan as the backups. Worst case scenario both picks bust and you’re back to starting Devan and Charlie Johnson (Super Bowl starters). But with Pouncey he’s got so much experience you could try him out all over the line before you had to give up on him. Ugoh doesn’t have the versatility and Pollack/Richard just don’t apparently ahve the skill.

Make the move for Gaither INDY!

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

by Mr MaLoR on Mar 8, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Why? What’s the knock on him? Or do you just want another first round pick?

by Naptime! on Mar 8, 2010 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not really a knock on him, just want the extra first round pick. We have Oher to play Left Tackle and the Right Tackle position is one of the easiest to replace in the NFL. Gaither is a great player, probably the biggest physical speciman playing in the NFL as well. Just a massive, massive man with great athleticism.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Just to clarify

The rumors of Indy considering Gaither aren’t even rumors. They’re more like suggestions coming from the fan base and sports writers.

I've mainly heard him to SF

But I’m not opposed. Just don’t think he’s the long-term solution at LT.

I would add Safety to that list

There is no depth at safety. Melvin Bullitt can play both positions, but he is usually busy playing SS, Bob Sanders is no longer a reliable starter. Leaving Jamie Silva as the only safety left to back up Bethea, He does not have the athletic ability to play FS; he is always a step behind in coverage.

Defense is more important than breathing.

I'd feel more comfortable with Brown being drafted (presuming he falls to Indy) than Gaither being picked up

For one, Brown wouldn’t have the financial hit that Gaither would. And let’s be frank: This coming season will almost certainly be the only uncapped one, unless the NFL and PA becomes monumentally stupid. You don’t want that big a hit on your roster. Besides, even if rules were worked out excusing any signing done in the uncapped year, it’s still smarter to go cheaper as long as the talent available still shows promise.

For two, again thinking longer term: You’d end up having Brown a lot longer.

That said, I’m not opposed to Gaither being signed. I just think there are better possible options for the long term. I’d be willing to gamble to let Gaither go as long as Brown were still available. Or if I somehow got ironclad information that Okung would fall (yeah, I know, dream on EMH…). But if I knew that no good ones would be available in the first two rounds, and if I knew that the ones who’d be there in the latter rounds weren’t as good as Gaither, well then, pull the trigger. But that’s a specific situation, with specific triggering events. Given that all of what I’m saying is simply unknown, I think it’s a better idea to see how the draft works out.

Why would you have Brown for a lot longer? Gaither is only 24.

Plus you don’t even know that Brown will be available and he will most likely not be as good as Gaither.

yeap

Also, Brown doesn’t fit the new style that the Colts want to go with on the offensive line anymore. They won’t to go bigger, and by extension, they want better run blockers. Brown does not fit either of those categories.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, the Colts are not going to draft Brown.

#1 O-Line..
  1. O-line…
  2. Tossup between CB, DE, and O-Line!

I would not be at all upset if our first three picks went like this:
#1. Maurkice Pouncey
#2. Kyle Calloway
#3. Jason Fox

We need at least 3 new starters on the OL and could always use the depth. I be giddy if we pulled of the Gaither signing, but it doesn’t tend to be the Colts style.

I don't know if Calloway is going 2nd round

I would think he’s probably closer to round three or four.

It's not that I'm lazy, Bob, it's that I just don't care
