Jacksonville Jaguars team needs

The Jaguars are coming off another disappointing season and have a few areas of need. The recent signing of Aaron Kampman addresses a need at defensive end.

1. Wide Receiver

- It was obvious last year that Torry Holt is very much declining and that lead to his release. Mike Sims- Walker had a good season and will look to build off that. Other than Sims- Walker the talent is very scarce and addressing it during the draft is a must. There is only one Wide Receiver worthy of the #10 pick and that is Dez Bryant. Bryant has some baggage that could have his stock dropping. Some later round options include Demaryius Thomas, Damian Williams, and Brandon LaFell.

2. Safety

- The Jags need to find a replacement for Reggie Nelson who has disappointed. Some possibilities at the #10 spot include Taylor Mays and Earl Thomas. Later round options include Nate Allen, Chad Jones, and Morgan Burnett.

3. Linebacker

- Russell Allen is nothing more than a backup and a young talented replacement needs to be found. Former Linebacker Jack Del Rio will be on the lookout of a later round steal.

We do not want Tebow

QB is a position of need but we don’t want Tebow. Unless there is a trade Jax will not get him anyway. Jax has no 2nd round pick and Gene Smith won’t waste a #10 pick on a project.
Our needs are:
DL
DB
WR
In that order.

by Marmaduke1 on Mar 9, 2010 10:55 AM EST reply actions

Receiver? Not really.

MSW is good. Mike Thomas is budding at the #3 role, Jarrett Dillard looked good until he got put on IR. Best WR corp in the NFL? No. The CFL level receivers the Jags had for awhile, definetely not.

Did you actually watch any of Russell Allen last year, or basing that off of him being an UDFA?

by Jonathan Loesche on Mar 9, 2010 12:04 PM EST reply actions

DE is not fixed and the Jaguars will still address it in the draft

The wide receiver position is not the biggest need. In fact it’s not even close.
Here’s how I would prioritize it still:
DE
DT
S
LB
G/C
QB
WR

I agree

now with the pickup of Osgood, I think our WR is pretty stable, I mean I bet we pick up somebody in like the 5th to 7th round, but not top need. Allen was very good player and was downright amazing considering. Sadly I agree DE is still a position of need, not as badly but still needed, I think the position of most need is interior line, but drafting at #10 is not the place to do it

by bigkorean on Mar 9, 2010 12:14 PM EST reply actions

osgood is nothing

If you’re counting on Osgood to be a receiver, you’re in for a nice laugh.

by AirNorval on Mar 10, 2010 5:16 AM EST up reply actions

Russell Allen is a heckuva football player and gem!

I think the Jaguuars need right now:
C; FS; DE; MLB; DT; G
I see no QBs to worth being picked…This year is David’s (last?) chance to prove himself. Next year I hope the Jags will draft the next stating QB in the 1st-2nd round.

I agree with Zoltan

It’s hard to say that Russell Allen has reached his potential. An undrafted guy who had a couple starts in his rookie year is destined to be a backup at best?

the idea a UDFA is at his limit is bumpkus….James Harrison and Wes Welker both had the same path

This will be a tough draft for the Jags IMO.

The loss of the second round pick really will put a premium on trading down or making an excellent pick. I mocked Earl Thomas at #10, but I can see a strong case for Dez Bryant [I don’t like some of his intangible issues] or Derrick Morgan [I still think they need pass rush/DE help].
The third round pick will almost have to be used to take Tebow……if he is still available. Which I believe he will be.

So Gene Smith will need to find some sleepers in rounds four, five, and six. This is a deep draft so hopefully he can pull it off without trading any of the 2011 picks.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 9, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Safety is their biggest need not WR. Sims Walker is good, Mike Thomas had an underrated rookie year with 48 receptions and they also have Dillard, Osgood and Troy Williamson. WR is far from being their biggest need maybe 3rd or 4th.

by Yankees10 on Mar 9, 2010 3:06 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't say safety is the biggest need according to the Jaguars

For some reason that I can’t figure out, the Jaguars say they like what they have in the secondary. They seem much more adamant about finding a new MLB to start.

I think the front office wants Nelson to stay ‘happy’ and keep working at it….he was a low 1st rounder so the investment has to play out a little

C, MLB, DL (depth)

I believe that those are our prime needs. WR would certainly never make the list.

by alwaysforgiven821 on Mar 9, 2010 5:54 PM EST reply actions

we dont need an LB right kmow. Safety and DE most important WR comes b4 LB

by rhettchrystal on Mar 9, 2010 8:55 PM EST reply actions

The Jaguars have said...

They’ve said that they want a middle linebacker, and that Daryl Smith is the only one who played a great year, but they want to move him to the outside.

What happened to Haden?

For the last few weeks Jags fans have been on every mock here stating their preference for Haden and that Morgan would not be picked with Harvey and Graves on board. Then Haden runs a 4.57 and I do not see his name mentioned once. And Morgan is mentioned even after adding Kampman.

Not that I disagree, I gave you Morgan in my mock. But I think he may be going earlier now. Safety and WR are deep in this draft (in terms of large numbers of players in the second tier of talent), so WR can wait. The problem you have is the lack of a 2nd and whether the owner is committed to Tebow should he be available in the 3rd or 4th. That takes away two useful picks.

by ct17 on Mar 9, 2010 11:29 PM EST reply actions

I'm sure you read wrong

I doubt that any Jaguar fan would say we’re fine at DE with Harvey and Groves on board. Before Kampman was added defensive end was the #1 need and after it still is. The reason a lot of Jaguar fans wanted Haden is because Jaguar fans are strong believers in the BAP philosophy thanks to a man named Vic Ketchman. We’ve never really been sold on Morgan and all felt that Haden was a better player. Now that he showed he has subpar speed we’re not so sure.

By the way, the owner never said he was committed to Tebow should he be available in the 3rd or 4th.

Campmans knee is shredded

They need another DE, maybe they’ll finally hit on one. They cant expect to ever beat the Colts if Manning never gets even a grass stain.

by AirNorval on Mar 10, 2010 5:13 AM EST reply actions

Its an ACL

he’ll get over it, he has one of the best work ethics of any De we’ve ever had.

You better hope someone decides to rush the passer, because watching the Jags D is painful. They play this vanilla two deep stuff every freakin down and cant rush the passer with their front four. Its like death by a thousand paper cuts.

dude seriously this is a draft mock stop being biased towards what ever team you follow man….try to be objective, thats the point….yeah the Colts have a good OL, a good set of ‘circumstances’ and a QB who rarely take more then a four or five step drop….Harvey did sack Manning last year, or at least knock him down multiple times

by jawsaints on Mar 18, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Do not agree with this list

WR is not a primary need at this point. The problem with the offense is a combination of OL and QB. Though defense requires much attention, center and guard must be addressed.

1. DT – The Jaguars will continue to be gutted on the ground and through the air unless they get another DT that can either penetrate or hold the point of attack, or both. The running lanes are there and the opposing QB has room to step up. I don’t care how good your DEs are, if the QB can step up he will complete the throws.

2. LB – Not only in run support but also in the passing game. The slot and the TE is consistently open for opposing teams and Jacksonville needs more speedy and aggressive players at the LB spot.

3. Center\Guard – Meester, as good as he was, simply isn’t a force anymore. If the Jags move any of their guards to center then the pick switches. There were enough moments in which the interior OL got no push on running plays or were pushed back on passing plays.

Fix 1 and 2, your DBs will look better. I have Safety as number 4 on the list.

The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall.
