2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 26
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Andrew Schmidt, lead blogger at SB Nation's Arizona Cardinals blog, Revenge of the Birds, checks in to make the No. 26 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 26 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Arizona Cardinals have selected Terrence Cody, defensive tackle, Alabama.
Andrew Schmidt says: With linebackers such as Sean Weatherspoon, Rolando McClain and Sergio Kindle already off the board, the Cardinals would be reaching for any others that are remaining. With that being said, defensive tackle is a enormous need on the defense, and the Cardinals only have Gabe Watson signed, who has yet to prove he can be a valid starter. Adding Cody's massive size and strength would immediately improve the Cardinals' run defense, forcing opponents to bounce runs to the outside. He's a force to be reckoned with and will consistently draw double teams from opposing teams' offensive linemen.
Putting Cody in the middle would also improve the play of the inside linebackers that the team does have signed, meaning drafting Cody could improve more than one position. Although Cody has struggled with weight issues, the Cardinals have the best strength and conditioning coach in the league in John Lott, who would likely keep Cody in shape, and could add more muscle to his frame.
Mocking Dan reacts: Andrew makes a great point when talking about Lott keeping on Cody. But anyone who takes Cody is taking a risk. The issues with his weight and desire are well known. More than that, though, he's almost exclusively a two-down player. Still, Cody is a good pick. If he's not the pick, you have to imagine the Cardinals would go after an offensive tackle. With Charles Brown still being out there, that may have been a better choice.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Ryan Mathews/RB/Fresno State, 3 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 4 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 5 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland

C...
Fills a need (for 2 downs), but there’s just a lot of other better players on the board.
"Lord, beer me strength."
I would have went Brian Price personally, or Charles Brown. Price would have been a lot better for the Cards than Cody IMO

Cards need a dominating NT and Cody fits the bill.
Andrew is right about John Lott. Without Lott I don’t think there would be enough confidence to pick Cody in the first, from a fan perspective. The defense needs as great an influx of talent as possible if the team is going to improve to the next level and enjoy consistant success.
Solid pick
Cody de-fattening made him eligible for the 1st.
Only question is if he can translate the lost weight to actual game stamina…cuz even for a 2-down player..he was rarely on the field 2 downs.
Get HWSNBN...and they will come
I second this question
Branch and Watson fill the nose fine. Cody is a big-time reach here and he doesn’t fill a need either IMO, so I don’t see the point of this pick.

Looking at the participation stats at PFP
It appears Branch spent most of his time at DE, he only really ever moved inside on passing downs. So I guess that helps clear things up a bit at least.

Grade C
While Mount Cody is the best pure zero technique in this draft, his weight and durable will be a concern moving forward. OT’s and LB’s more talented were still on the board. Cody could have been had in round 2. Brandon Spikes or Anthony Davis would have been better picks.
Cardinals Strength & Conditioning Coach Lott is one of the best in the biz and will have his work cut out for him with Cody.
Please tell me that wasnt a serious comment

semi serious
Spikes is better off ballooning up to 300lbs and playing DT
Get HWSNBN...and they will come
maybe..
but his whole career he’ll be a liability when teams pass against his team.
He is strictly a 2-down defender.
Get HWSNBN...and they will come

How many successful NFL LB's run a 40 as slow as Spikes did?
It’s a serious question.

a reach
unless you need him for an eating contest.
Good pick
Most everybody outside the Cards organization thinks we are desperate for an OT but we actually do have some depth. Sure it is not a position of strength but when looking at our D needs right now it makes sense.
With Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell, both 3-4 DE’s with 7 sacks a piece I think we are okay with having a two down NT. Also, Branch is more of a DE now, he played much better at that position last season that at NT. And Watson can still prove himself at NT this season.
Also, with leaders like Lott, Wilson, and maybe even Porter I am sure he will be “motivated” enough.
The tackles left on the board just aren’t good enough to value over a big need on defense.
They are who we thought they were!
Cody has a low floor.
If he stays healthy very long (through his rookie contract at least) there’s almost no chance he will be a bust at this point in the draft.
This isn’t drafting a Superstar, this is drafting a player who will start. Mount Cody can start fat, he can dominate if he gets straightened around. Hampton has the same desire and conditioning issues (even if Cody is worse off than Hampton has ever been) but even taking plays off and coasting most of the time he is a dominant force. 2008 Hampton played horrible for what he can do and still was a top NT. This year playing for the money he was dominant.
Considering that most of the people I also liked were gone already I like the pick.
But it all depends on if Lott can keep him in shape.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
