2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 27

The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Dave Halprin, lead blogger at SB Nation's Dallas Cowboys blog, Blogging the Boys, checks in to make the No. 27 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!

With the No. 27 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have selected Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida.

Dave Halprin says: With the way this draft unfolded for the Cowboys, the scenario screams "trade down". All the positions of need have been depleted; the top offensive linemen, safeties, corners and receivers are gone.

The one player who has really slid, DE/OLB Jason Pierre-Paul, ranks in the top ten in many major draft services. The Cowboys love DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer, but the drafter's job is to stockpile as many assets as possible. The OLB position in the 3-4 defense is of utmost importance. The Cowboys have spent quite a few picks on this position over the last few years, but they can’t afford to pass up on the value of Pierre-Paul. Injuries can happen, and Wade Phillips has the knowledge to create packages to utilize all three players simultaneously – Ware, Spencer and Pierre-Paul.

There are players who are better fits for Dallas, but they don't have Pierre-Paul's rating and potential. Pass rushers are always in demand, and 3-4 OLB’s are of particular interest to certain teams, the Cowboys included. It’s not a position of "need" for the Cowboys, but Pierre-Paul’s "value" at this pick is too great to pass up.

Mocking Dan reacts: In theory, this should be a great pick. JPP is an athletic marvel. However, he's no 3-4 outside linebacker. He showed as much during South Florida's recent pro day. He really struggles moving backward and doesn't have the kind of lateral agility required.

A cornerback like Devin McCourty of Rutgers would be a perfect fit for Dallas. He's a scheme fit and would possibly be able to start immediately for Dallas.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Ryan Mathews/RB/Fresno State, 3 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 4 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 5 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Dallas' selection of DE Jason Pierre-Paul? Please be sure to check out Blogging the Boys for all of your Cowboys needs.

Cowboys need an O lineman.

Also

Where would McCourty start if they drafted him. They already have Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman.

In today's NFL...

is it ever a bad thing to have more than 2 good corners?

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 1, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

They need an OT

So they dont need to get a CB in the first, when they could get Patrick Robinson, Domonique Franks, etc in the second. All that could be first rounders if this draft wasnt so strong.

by Yankees10 on Apr 3, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Newman is no spring chicken

any year now he could start regressing

One more thing

This is the worst pick in the draft so far in my opinion. They already have Ware and Spencer there is no need to waste a 1st rounder on another OLB.

by Yankees10 on Apr 1, 2010 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

You say above

Is it bad thing to thing to have 3 CBs?

How about inserting passrusher in that sentence?

IMO

by Foilhat on Apr 2, 2010 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

We drafted 2 OLBs last year.

Butler had 3 sacks in very limited playing time. We DO NOT NEED OLBS.

by Flounder69 on Apr 2, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Buter was a good 4th rounder last year that could probably get 5 sacks as a backup. They dont need a OLB at all.

by Yankees10 on Apr 3, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not to sure what to think of the pick

On one hand we are getting top 10 talent which wouldn’t start at OLB probably ever and would be able to spell Ware and Spencer on third downs playing traditional DE, as well as allowing us to possibly put 3 DEs out there on 3rd down to up the pressure on opposing QBs, and with how the draft has shaken out, the is a classic trade down opportunity for Jerry which I am almost 100% positive he would in this situation, there would be a team out there that wants JPP so I have no doubts we would trade down in that scenario.

by nicholas.rodriguez on Apr 1, 2010 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Speaking objectively...

I like the pick. You can never have too many pass rushers. A team like Dallas possibly could be the perfect destination, if JPP has to go to a 3-4 team.

He doesn’t have to start and can learn from a similar sized player in DeMarcus Ware on how to make the transition to a rush LB. Actually…JPP has the potential to be another Ware.

As a Giants fan…I also like the pick. Cuz I think he’s a bust. Of course it would suck if he pans out…

Get HWSNBN...and they will come

This is a steal, because taking him top 10-15 is a huge risk but if he falls this far it has muchh less risk, he has the most untapped potential in this draft

by atlantalove on Apr 1, 2010 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

I had a tough time mocking Dallas too.

I ended up giving them a Cornerback. The third best one in the draft. That was more a depth pick because no worthy O Linemen were available.

I don’t think JPP can play as a linebacker. He is more suited to be a 4-3 DE. IMO.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 1, 2010 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Terrible pick

They need safety help…why not grab Nate Allen?

Offensive line youth injection? What about Bruce Campbell?

Golden Tate’s there too….

Yes, you wanna trade down, but even if you can’t you should add good players and JPP wasn’t even atop the big board here. He doesn’t even fit into the 3-4 defense.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 1, 2010 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

agreed

any of the above would have been wiser. On a 4-3 team he’s a high-risk high-reward gamble, on a 3-4, he’s a misfit.

by Mr. X on Apr 1, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't even call Nate Allen a reach here...

He’s gonna go within 10 or so picks…won’t be there in round 2…and helps them get Ken Hamlin off the field.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 2, 2010 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah…Adams is gone…they could really use a campbell.

I agree that he doesn’t fit into a 3-4. Also, that is a deep position for the team.

Interesting pick

He was the BPA but he doesn’t fill a hole. I think I may have preferred Campbell but I don’t hate this move.

Alot of haters on this pick

I dont think its a bad pick, having three pass rushers is better than 2. Problem is no one actually knows if this guy is good, seems like there was better value at OT or CB.

People who are flaming this as not a scheme fit, I disagree with. Phillips one gap system basically uses 5 rushers every down, so to say this guy cant drop is coverage is a mute point. Even a DT can play a hook zone if needed ask Dick Lebeau.

IMO

by Foilhat on Apr 2, 2010 1:44 AM EDT reply actions

We already have 4 pass rushers.

He would no be battling with 3 others just to be a top backup. That is an ignorant pick. Campbell has top 10 talent, but a 3rd round head. JPP is not much better. The guy played in what 6-7 games? Awful pick. Campbell, Allen, McCourty, or Tate are all much better picks.

by Flounder69 on Apr 2, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have definitely taken Bruce Campbell at this point.

I mean hell, we drafted not one but two OLBs last year. I know Brandon Williams hurt himself, but Victor Butler looked good in his limited time (3 sacks despite rarely every seeing the field) and I just think Dallas can not continue to ignore its needs on the offensive line when Bruce Campbell, a guy who probably has the most potential of any tackle in the draft, is just sitting there.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Apr 2, 2010 2:44 AM EDT reply actions

Dumb pick, Grizz

This makes no sense to me. OLB is the Cowboys’ strongest position. Spencer and Ware are all-world, and the team just drafted two promising players (Butler, Williams) to back them up. Additionally, JPP is a bad fit for the team. He’s no different than Bruce Campbell; an athletic marvel with on-field questions. And Campbell fills a position of far greater need.

Now that Hamlin was just released...

this pick really should’ve been FS Nate Allen.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Apr 2, 2010 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

Now that Flozell has been released

the pick HAS to be Bruce Campbell. The Cowboys can target Burnett in the second round even if it means trading up.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Apr 2, 2010 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

why do you doubt Free?

2009 BTB Fantasy Champ... Deal with it

by quincyyyyy on Apr 2, 2010 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Do not doubt Free.

We doubt McQuistan and Brewster, the only other OTs on the roster. Columbo is not getting any younger and we do not have a RT on the roster. Campbell can make a transition to RT then take over LT if needed.

by Flounder69 on Apr 2, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

How do you figure that I am doubting Free?

We now clearly need a player to backup both positions with the potential to replace Colombo down the line. And unfortunately McQuistan is still a scrub, and Brewster is probably going to be played at guard.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

by Cowboyfan729 on Apr 2, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. All of the good OTs in this draft are likely gonna go in the first, or be gone by their next pick. there are a lot of good safeties to be had in the mid rounds like burnett, stuckey, or Wright.

I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

by bross09 on Apr 2, 2010 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

nice pick if he drops that far

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is

by WarWolf on Apr 2, 2010 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

Now that Flozell, Hamlin are gone

I think the pick will be either Bruce Campbell or Nate Allen. Campbell is more likely in my opinion.

by Yankees10 on Apr 3, 2010 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

It would be very hard to pass up his potential at this point. We need to plan on replacing Columbo very soon and need a fall back if Free gets injured.
