2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 62

The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is winding down. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. Gonzo, lead blogger at SB Nation's Minnesota Vikings blog, Daily Norseman, checks in to make the No. 62 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away!

With the No. 62 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings have selected Tim Tebow, QB, Florida

Gonzo says: There was never a genius without a tincture of madness. - Aristotle

Yep, I'm doing it.  I'm pulling the trigger.  Bring forth the hate mail.  I'm making Tim Tebow the second-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, and their quarterback of the future.

Am I crazy for making this pick?  I suppose it's entirely possible.  But it really isn't every day that you get an opportunity to draft the guy that might be the greatest player at his position in the history of college football.  And it's really, really, foolish to try to argue with Tebow's production at the college level, as I've said myself on my own site on more than one occasion.  Is the guy ready to be an NFL quarterback right now?  Heck no. . .not even close.  But for the Vikings, this isn't a pick for "right now."  This is a pick for 2011 and beyond.  Yes, I've heard everything about Tebow not being able to read NFL defense or how he has a terrible throwing motion and everything else.

All of those things are coachable.  The work ethic and dedication to his craft that Tebow brings to the table are not.  Neither is the way he oozes confidence and leadership ability.  6'4", 230 pounds with very good mobility really isn't coachable, either.  And even if Tebow isn't ready to step in at the quarterback position for the Vikings at this point in time, he could have an impact in other places while he learns the NFL game, much like he did as a freshman on one of the University of Florida's recent National Championship teams.

It's entirely possible that the NFL Draft has never had a more controversial prospect than Tim Tebow.  And in this scenario, he's now a Minnesota Viking.

Mocking Dan reacts: Whoa. Those are some massive cajones, so bravo. In this scenario, jaded Jaguars fans thank you. In fact, every other team probably thanks you. Make no mistake about it, everyone want to see how Tebow is going to develop. They just don't want their team to be the one taking him. There have been rumblings the last couple days that Tebow may be the Vikings' option in the first round. With that in mind, I guess this could be a steal?

But in the end, Minnesota is the kind of team I expect to take a chance on Tebow. They're good enough to take the risk. The reward could end up being massive. Or non-existent.

Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona, 2 - Brandon Spikes/LB/Florida, 3 - Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida, 4 - Toby Gerhart/RB/Stanford, 5 - Brandon LaFell/WR/LSU

Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Vikings' selection of Tebow? Please be sure to check out Daily Norseman for all of your Vikings needs.

I seriously believe Tony Pike is a better option than Tebow.

Good pick.

Reunited with Percy boy. If Brett comes back, he gets to learn from the best for a year then he can take over.

Im not sure how i feel about my boy in an all purple uni tho….i cant see it.

I do not agree!! =-<

Not the worst pick in the history of mock drafts. May even be worth the gamble… in 3 years. Just not where I would have gone. I gave you a C.

If we ll agreed all the time, life would be boring.

Great pick, in my opinion.

Tebow can do well on only a few teams. He needs a fast team who can get open quickly. A team with a running game to bail him out and allow his own running skills to shine. A team with versatile players.

Titans come to mind as one. Vikings are another.

If Tebow is to do well anywhere, Minnesota is a great place to do it.

As a Vikings fan, C

I give this one a “C” because I would hope it works out, even though I don’t think it would.

The thing with Tebow is that if you’re ever going to take a chance on a guy, he’s a good one to take that chance on.

I’m not convinced Tebow can become a good passer in the NFL, but who knows? I hope the Vikings use their #2 pick for a more surefire contributor, though.

by medicineball on Apr 14, 2010 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

I love it...

Not only is Tebow guaranteed to sit and learn for a full year….but he’d also step into a team with weapons around him in 2011.

The guy has all the intangibles and is athletically gifted…..he’s putting in the work and you know…he stands a chance to pan out as a project. If not, I’m sure he’ll be an athletic weapon……as a 2nd rounder and especially for a playoff team….it’s a risk you can afford to take without killing the franchise.

And it wouldn’t hurt Minnesota to get a marketable young man who has morals and works hard…..that could play well in the Midwest.

If Minny did this

the city of Minnesota would become the center of the universe.

Or at least ESPN. They’d move their HQ from Bristol to Minnesota. Rachael Nichols would be a Vikings employee.

I think it is too late

Tebow will be gone in the first.

The Vikings will have to move up in the first to get him if they really want him.

I think it is very wishful thinking to believe that every team will pass on him for two rounds (well except for the Bears who do not have any picks in the first two rounds). Especially New England. You know Belichek will probably take him in the first.

I have him in my mock going to the Vikings at #19 after we trade with Atlanta. Ray Edwards and #62 for #19.

But even that is too low. I think Buffalo will take him at #9 or Jacksonville at #10.

There are too many coaches who are saying he is the real deal and they would love to have him for me to believe anything that someone posts here unless they have coached in the NFL before.

All you guys that do not like Tebow for whatever reason are way off on his football abilities.

And I am a USC fan. I just like Tebow.

by MarkSP18 on Apr 15, 2010 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

Cleveland Should take him at #38. He is better than Colt McCoy, period.

"Smokescreen."

by jaws. on Apr 15, 2010 1:37 AM EDT reply actions

Screw that! Colt’s a much better prospect. College production was fantastic, good athleticism, great accuracy.

As for Minnesota, I think it’s a decent pick. I don’t like Tebow, but if they can rebuild his throwing motion like the Packers did with Rodgers then he could be good. Minnesota is also a place where he won’t be thrown into the fire too soon, which is good for him.

I don't understand the pick at all.

You have declared Tebow your QB of the Future. That means you believe in his talent and plan on taking a couple of years to make him our starter. With that I have no problem. But you passed on him in the first round. You did not want to protect this valuable piece of your future.

That tells me that you really did not believe he is a "franchise QB that will make the Vikings great. He is just a developmental QB that you find more valuable than a great guard or RB. He is not as valuable as a Cornerback you took in the first.

If Tebow is not worth protecting then you should have waited until the 4th or 5th and selected Skelton or Brown. They are also development. Just because a crazy man attacks a machine gun nest in wartime does not make that person anymore Brave. Just crazy.

What are you talking about? Drafting Tebow in the 1st would (based on his value in this mock) be a massive reach. He improved his team right away and got the QB he wanted at a much cheaper price. That’s a win-win for the Vikes if they really believe in him.

by Legoman0721 on Apr 15, 2010 7:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

If they really believed in him they would not give every other team the opportunity to take him away.

How could the GM look the coach in the eye and say " Yes, we all agreed he was the franchise future but I wanted to make sure I had the #3 CB instead of the #6 CB." No team was ever led by a CB. They are led by a QB. If a team is set at QB they can take a QB as a value pick.
Gonzo either believes the Vikes don’t need a franchise QB now or he doesn’t believe that Tim Tebow is a franchise QB. Either way his draft theory doesn’t make sense. If you don’t take him with the #30 pick you have to wait till the 4th round when the picks are less valuable.
Just my take on it.

I was one of the boo birds that gave this an F

Mainly because we need a starter out of our first two picks, even if that means in 2011. Tebow will most likely not be ready to start and perform at a high level by 2011. With BPA in mind for our first 2 picks we should try to select a Corner, DT, OG or LB.

I'm representing the Vikes tonight at the PatsPulpit mock and I thought about doing the same thing.

For much the same reasons, but I won’t for this reason alone:

The first two rounds should be spent on players that will see the field (not necessarily start) this year. Tebow won’t.

That makes him a maximum third round talent, and if he was still around at fourth, he’d be a steal, IMO.

In a two round draft, he’s not even in the conversation. I admire the sentiment, and I think he’d be great as a Viking.

As a pick, he’d be a C, but for the guts to take him, you get an A.

Starters & The Draft

NMVike,

I agree with you about the positions of need, definitely, but I disagree that we need a starter out of both of our two picks. Even if they don’t draft Tebow, I wouldn’t expect either of the Vikes first two picks this year to be a starter, barring injury. Would McCourty or Robinson unseat a healthy Winfield & Griffin? No. Would Dan Williams supplant Pat or Kevin? No. I could maybe see Washington giving Leber a run for his money, but Leber remains the starter. The only folks that could step in and start for the Vikings right now (e.g., Eric Berry) will be long gone by #30.

Your scenario works I suppose if the Vikes draft McCourty (1st) and, say, DT Arthur Jones (2nd) and McCourty moves Winfield to SS and and Jones supplants Pat in 2011. However, then we’re in a position where we’re likely without Favre, didn’t have a guy holding a clipboard behind him for a year, and have to make do with Sage or T-Jack while A.P. gets another year older.

While yes, there other people who can hold a clipboard besides Tebow, and it’s overwhelmingly likely that if the Vikes draft a QB, it will be one of them (because I’ll be mildly surprised to see Tebow available at #30). However, if the Vikes really decide that he’s their guy, they are, as Mocking Dan states, one of the few teams that will be available to give him an environment he can do well in.

The reason the Vikes don’t need starters is simple. They are not the Browns or Rams. They’re in a wonderful position to draft for depth & the future, NOT for immediate need. If Chilly & Rob really are that enamored with Tebow from watching all of Percy’s game film last year & Tebow’s own work this year, then he’s a fine investment, even in the first round. We don’t need him to take the field this year to win the Super Bowl. I don’t want to compare it to the Pistons drafting Darko, but yes, the Vikings could even afford the bust if it comes to that.

Future starters for 2011 will be available in later rounds, particularly OL and DB. If a QB is drafted early, a trade of Sage or T-Jack could net even more picks. While I think the Vikings should draft, say, 2 OL, 2 DBs, 1 DT, 1 LB, 1 RB and either 1 WR or 1 QB with their picks, they can afford to have all of these guys be depth. And thank God for that.

by J. Ryan on Apr 15, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

This pretty much sums it up

I just want to know what player we can pick in the first and second round that will come onto our team and replace a starter? Even if we trade Edwards I doubt a DE like Dunlap for instance will beat out BRob. Maybe next year?

I think this is why we should trade up giving up future picks and players (Edwards, Sage, TJack, Tahi) to get some guys that can start in a year or two.

by MarkSP18 on Apr 15, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points

I don’t see McCourty or Robinson unseating a healthy Winfield & Griffin, BUT I would expect to see them in the rotation if they were taken in the first two rounds. There’s no substitute for field time, and I would expect them to contribute to some degree.

My life has been a trivial pursuit. Trivia: where three roads meet.

Eric Berry

is just about the only player I can see the Vikings trade up for who would be a starter at some point this season, if not from day 1. I suppose one could also make the argument for Okung, Bulaga, or Iupati. Some mocks have Iupati falling to near where the Vikings pick, but I doubt he makes it past Pittsburgh; in any case, it’s hard to envision to Vikings trading valuable picks to get an OL when they don’t seem that disenchanted with what they have (although many Vikings fans are).

If McCourty or Robinson is the pick in round 1 I could see them getting some time at nickel. I wouldn’t be worried about any DB the Vikings draft not seeing the field this year — regardless of the round they’re selected in.

If the Vikings don’t go for someone like Tebow … I can somehow see them use a late-round pick on, say, Northwestern’s Mike Kafka, a smart, mobile QB who helped himself when all eyes were on him this year.

The lack of glaring team need, IMO, makes this one of the most interesting drafts in recent memory. We all know where we want depth & future (DB, OL, DT) … but this year, they can really afford to be bold.

by J. Ryan on Apr 15, 2010 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Starters

The Vikings could have four issues as to their starters.
1) DT suspensions. The starcaps case is still ongoing
2) LB injuries. No one is saying everything is healed
3)CB injuries. Ditto
4) Safety position was weak last year

So, I can see a premier safety, CB, LB, or DT in a starting role. Would the stars have to align for this lucky young man? Yes. But talent and a little luck can go a long way in an NFL career.
