2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 63
The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft is winding down. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. BigBlueShoe, lead blogger at SB Nation's Indianapolis Colts blog, Stampede Blue, checks in to make the No. 63 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away!
With the No. 63 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts have selected Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
BBS says: I wish I could say I was hoping for Tebow, but I wasn't. Let Gonzo and his blonde-bearded pillagers in Minnesota deal with that. For me, the choice in Round Two was between Arthur Jones, DT out of Syracuse, and Corey Wootton from Northwestern. This was a tough call, and making it tougher was the versatility that Wootton brings to the field. This type of versatility is exactly what the Colts need, especially after they granted long-time defensive end Raheem Brock his release this off-season. With Wootton, I felt that his ability to play both DE and DT would benefit the Colts, allowing them to utilize his 6'7, 277 pound frame to create mis-matches on the line. However, Wootton's knock is his lack of edge speed, and for a DE in a Tampa-2 defense, edge speed is important. When it is all said and done, it came down to fit. Which player fits this team? For me, the answer was Arthur Jones, but not by much.
At 6'3, 301 pounds, Jones is ideally suited (physically) to play in the Tampa-2 defense that the Colts use. Now, I realize that picking Jones seems a bit odd given that the Colts used a second round pick last year on a DT from USC named Fili Moala. I've met Fili. I've interviewed him. I've watched him play. I am NOT sold on Fili Moala as a DT who can create pressure on the QB from the interior of the Colts d-line. At least with Jones there is the potential to develop him into an interior pass rusher and o-line disruptor. He also just seems tougher and more focused than Moala, who looked totally lost on the football field last season.
Jones' strengths are his burst off the line and his quickness. He doesn't have a solid set of pass rushing moves, but that is where defensive line coach John Teerlinck comes in. If anyone can develop Jones as an interior rusher, it's him. Jones is also a very good and violent tackler. He sheds blockers well, and his competitiveness really sets him apart from other players. He can also play "anchor" tackle, utilizing his size and strength. The only red flag with Jones is a history of injury, but one thing I liked reading in his scouting report was he played through injuries at Syracuse and still produced. He's a tough guy. One needs that to win in the trenches in this league.
With Jones on the roster, the Colts could then develop Mitch King or Eric Foster to possibly replace Raheem Brock as the utility d-lineman. Jones could then compete with Dan Muir or Mookie Johnson, both of which were only offered one-year tenders this off-season. The DT position is vital in a Tampa-2, and with an under-the-radar player like Arthur Jones (ranked 51st overall by MtD) sitting there at pick #63, taking him adds tremendous value to a Colts defense that has turned the corner in recent years.
Mocking Dan reacts: This early for a defensive tackle is a potential risk. You'd basically be giving up on Moala after a season, even though he might fit best as a 3-4 end. I also really like the potential of Muir, even though he wasn't given a longer-term contract. But BBS is right in that Jones would fit the scheme pretty well and has some versatility.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona, 2 - Brandon Spikes/LB/Florida, 3 - Aaron Hernandez, TE, Florida, 4 - Toby Gerhart/RB/Stanford, 5 - Brandon LaFell/WR/LSU

I agree.
PLus, DT is not a big need.

I disagree. I think he’s way underrated. What don’t you like about him besides the injury history?

I dont dislike him
I just dont see why they would draft him in the 2nd when he should be available in the 4th or 5th. Also DT is not a huge need for the Colts.
Jones
I think Dan’s point is that he will not be available in Rounds 4 or 5. He will likely go late 2 or early 3.

I dislike him for the way he single-handedly destroyed ND two years ago
So I’d love to see him in a Colts uniform.
Projected? Who cares where mock drafts project him.
Arthur Jones will be a steal wherever he goes.
The only way he’s a reach is if its the first round. The guy was a monster on the field

Other mocks
Project him as a 2nd or 3rd, including this site. I actually only use the info from this site to guide my mock decisions. It would be kind of rude if I didn’t.

I look all over
Some places also have him as a 2nd or 3rd some as a 4th or later. Personally I think the guy is a third rounder but because of injuries I think he will available in the 4th and maybe the 5th. Thats just my opinion.
Fair enough

Not the worst pick BBS has made (cough cough Sanchez) but I'd have rather had
Wootton or Carrington to fill the 900 snaps Raheem Brock got last year as a run DE and pass DT
Gronk so the Colts have a legit 2 TE set for power situations and to run teams out of the nickel/dime.
The Ansah or Spievey to add to Indy’s thin but talented CB corps
Jermaine Cunningham, Jason Worilds or Austen Lane as an edge rushing DE backing up Freeney/Mathis.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Just how deeply can your senses be wrong? With some VR goggles, a camera and a touch on the back researchers were able to overcome a person's sense of being inside their own body.
Sanchez
I love how that pick has taken on a legendary status.

It's going to be brought up every year.

Personally I dont like the pick
I think there was better value on the board at CB and DE. And I like Wootton, the Colts have been able to make it work with lesser DTs only because the are so good offensively. I dont like how you talked yourself out of the Wootton pick. He may lack the pure speed to play DE full time in Colts two deep scheme, but he’s a better pass rusher, and could get bigger with his huge frame.
So sticking with that theme edge rusher or CB should have been prioritized over a DT unless of course the DT offered some pass rush value. Which IMO Jones doesnt.
IMO
With that knee injury...
I feel like he would’ve been there in the 3rd. Better picks available as Shake pointed out.

I give this an F.
Clearly Juice Williams is the best possible choice for the Colts at this point in the draft.
(I lied. I would wish Williams upon the Colts).
Why did you lie to me?
