ESPN ranks top NFL Drafts since 1967
On Friday, Mike Sando of ESPN.com put up his rankings of the top five NFL Drafts of all time. Read it here.
It's a fairly in-depth bit of work from Sando, and perfect food for thought leading into this year's draft.
After the jump we have his top five, some thoughts and a couple of classes that probably should have been ranked higher.
1. 1983:
- Top players: John Elway (Broncos), Jim Kelly (Bills), Dan Marino (Dolphins), Darrell Green (Redskins), Eric Dickerson (Rams), Bruce Matthews (Oilers), Richard Dent (Bears), Roger Craig (49ers), Karl Mecklenburg (Broncos), Joey Browner (Vikings), Leonard Marshall (Gaints), Curt Warner (Seahawks).
- Thoughts: This was an obvious selection as the top choice. This draft is much more than quarterbacks only. Matthews and Green are among the best players ever at their position. Dent, Craig and Mecklenburg were top players of the time and leaders of their teams.
2. 1996
- Top players: Jonathan Ogden (Ravens), Ray Lewis (Ravens), Marvin Harrison (Colts), Brian Dawkins (Eagles), Terrell Owens (49ers), Zach Thomas (Dolphins), La'Roi Glover (Raiders), Mike Alstott (Buccaneers), Eddie George (Oilers), Jon Runyan (Oilers), Keyshawn Johnson (Jets), Tedy Bruschi (Patriots), Muhsin Muhammad (Panthers).
- Thoughts: I might not have had this one No. 2, but it's hard to deny Ogden and Lewis helping this year's rating.
3. 1981
- Top players: Lawrence Taylor (Giants), Ronnie Lott (49ers), Mike Singletary (Bears), Russ Grimm (Redskins), Howie Long (Raiders), Rickey Jackson (Saints), Kenny Easley (Seahawks), Dexter Manley (Redskins), James Brooks (Chargers), Cris Collinsworth (Bengals), Dennis Smith (Broncos), Freeman McNeil (Jets)
- Thoughts: This would have been my No. 2. The defensive talent is staggering. People consider the defensive talent in this year's draft as being excellent. Judge it against the 1981 class and you might think again.
4. 1969
- Top players: Joe Greene (Steelers), Ted Hendricks (Colts), O.J. Simpson (Bills), Roger Wehrli (Cardinals), Charlie Joiner (Oilers). L.C. Greenwood (Steelers), Bob Kuechenberg (Eagles), Bill Bergey (Bengals)
- Thoughts: Considering I'm not 30, it's hard to have a lot of opinion on this one, so we'll trust Sando's reasoning.
5. 1985
- Top players: Jerry Rice (49ers), Bruce Smith (Bills), Chris Doleman (Vikings), Andre Reed (Bills), Lomas Brown (Lions), Steve Tasker (Oilers), Ray Childress (Oilers), Kevin Greene (Rams), Jay Novacek (Cardinals), Bill Fralic (Falcons), Jerry Gray (Rams), Randall Cunningham (Eagles), Al Toon (Jets), Jim Lachey (Chargers), Mark Bavaro (Giants), Herschel Walker (Cowboys), Duane Bickett (Colts)
- Thoughts: There are two Hall of Fame players and two others (Doleman and Reed) who could get there. Still, there are some better ones out there, I think.
So those are Sando's top five. I think you can make an argument for these two:
1989
- Top players: Deion Sanders (Falcons), Derrick Thomas (Chiefs), Troy Aikman (Cowboys), Barry Sanders (Lions), Steve Atwater (Broncos), Eric Metcalf (Browns), Andre Rison (Colts), Carnell Lake (Steelers), Trace Armstrong (Bears), Broderick Thomas (Buccaneers), Steve Wisniewski (Cowboys), Dave Meggett (Giants)
- Thoughts: That is four Hall of Fame players at the top and solid depth. This draft can also be strongly considered for the secondary players who were revolutionaries. Atwater was the most-feared safeties in the league for awhile. Metcalf is considered the precursor to Marshall Faulk – a running back who can do it all. Rison revolutionized the diva wide receiver, for good for bad.
2001
- Top players: Steve Hutchinson (Seahawks), Richard Seymour (Patriots), Drew Brees (Chargers), LaDanian Tomlinson (Chargers), Adrian Wilson (Cardinals), Casey Hampton (Steelers), Reggie Wayne (Colts), Todd Heap (Ravens), Chad Johnson (Bengals), Steve Smith (Panthers), Kris Jenkins (Panthers), Shaun Rogers (Lions), Kyle Vanden Bosch (Cardinals), Marcus Stroud (Jaguars), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Bengals), Michael Vick (Falcons), Aaron Schobel (Bills)
- Thoughts: Brees, Hutchinson, Seymour, Tomlinson and maybe Wilson are Hall of Fame players. Wayne and Johnson (Ochocinco) could still get there. For what it's worth, Vick brought a whole new audience and style to the NFL.
You can also consider these drafts:
1974
- Top players: Jack Lambert (Steelers), Mike Webster (Steelers), Lynn Swann (Steelers), John Stallworth (Steelers), Dave Casper (Raiders), Randy Gradishar (Broncos), Ed Jones (Cowboys), Donnie Shell (Steelers), Billy Johnson (Oilers)
2004
- Top players: Eli Manning (Giants), Larry Fitzgerald (Cardinals), Philip Rivers (Chargers), Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers), Vince Wilfork (Patriots), Jared Allen (Chiefs), Tony Romo (Undrafted), Bob Sanders (Colts), Steven Jackson (Rams), Matt Schaub (Falcons), Karlos Dansby (Cardinals), Chris Snee (Giants), Sean Taylor (Redskins)

Shows how overly optimistic draft fans are
Your all time greatest drafts have 12-15 wonderful players. This supposedly deep draft will be lucky to be even close. Yet everyone is thinking that 40 all pro’s are just waiting to be plucked. Fans are hoping that every 3rd and 4th round pick will propel their team to the Super Bowl.
As always 1/2 of the 1st round players will start by years end. Less than 1/2 of the 2nd round players will be starters, ever. And some of the third and 4th round players will be good depth players. The difference between a deep draft and a regular draft is just a matter of two or three players being a difference maker in the first couple of rounds.
Thanks, your article was a good reminder.

I think you can make an argument for it if he plays at a Pro Bowl level for the next four years. I think people would think much, much higher of him if he played anywhere else but Arizona.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Personally, in my opinion even if he does play at a PB level for the next 4 years (which I think is unlikely, since hes already 31) I dont think he would even be considered. His career has been overshadowed by safeties such as Reed, Polamalu, Dawkins, etc, but even if it wasnt I still dont think his stats would be good enough for the Hall. When it comes to rankings I dont think hes ever been better than maybe the 6th or 7th safety in the league. Thats just my opinion. I think guys like Hutchinson, Steve Smith have better chances of making it.
Is Eli Manning a top player?
isn’t he more of a lucky SOB who happened to be on a team with a great defense and run game.

Come on now
Even though you are a Cowboy fan you cant say Eli isnt one of the best QB’s in the league.
don't get him started....
he’s an insanely jealous individual who’s grown mad since his team hasn’t won in the playoffs since he was in diapers

Jealous of the Midgets?
Don’t flatter yourself. Cowboys have had more hall of famers and playoff success than the Giants can ever hope to have.
Cowboys franchise is hands down better and you know it.

LOL!
What universe do you live in? Name the top five QBs in this league, if Eli is in that group you are smoking something strong

You said Eli was one of the BEST
that means top five. maybe you mean one of the better (as in top ten)?
If that is the case then name me the top 15 QBs in the league. Just curious what your thought processes are.

Do you know how many good QB's there are nowadays?
You dont have to be a top 5 QB to be one of the best. My top 15:
1. Peyton Manning
2. Drew Brees
3. Tom Brady
4. Philip Rivers
5. Aaron Rodgers
6. Matt Schaub
7. Brett Favre
8. Ben Roethlisberger
9. Eli Manning
10. Tony Romo
11. Donovan McNabb
12. Matt Ryan
13. Joe Flacco
14. Mark Sanchez
15. Carson Palmer
And out of this list I would say the top 11 are stars.
uh oh...now you done it...
heres comes the tirade that states Romo is the reason sliced bread was even considered possible by humans.
Romo gave Peyton his arm strength.
Romo gave Rivers his mouth
Romo gave Brady his championship rings……well..maybe not
Romo gave Rodgers his patience to wait for Farve to decompose
Romo gave Farve his longevity pause
Romo traded 2 2nd round picks for Matt Schaub

LOL!
Last year was Eli’s first season over a 90 QB rating (just barely) and Romo and McNabb have accomplished that feat many times. What universe do you live in where Eli is a better QB than Donovan McNabb or Romo?

Your girl Troy Aikman > Jim Kelly
even tho Kelly’s got better stats.
Stats = nothing.
Championships = everything.

Is Tony Romo a great player?
Winner of one playoff game?
Just so you know, I say yes.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
I'm just curious how he counts towards the 2004 draft's rank
since he wasn’t drafted and all.
And Romo is not a great player, he’s a very good one.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
attempt!
he attempts to win too!
He doesn’t tho :(
