Broncos net fifth-round pick in deal

In a three-team trade, the Denver Broncos have received a fifth-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles. In exchange, tight end Tony Scheffler and a seventh-round pick was sent from Denver to the Detroit Lions. The Eagles will receive linebacker Ernie Sims

The immediate thought from me is that this is a bad trade for the Lions. They get a throwaway pick and a backup tight end for a starting-caliber linebacker.

In 2009, Sims started nine of the 11 games he's played in, totaling 49 tackles. He started every game for the Lions between 2006 and 2008.

Scheffler has long been a trade rumor for the Broncos. Last season he had 31 receptions for 416 yards ad two touchdowns. On his career, he as 138 catches for 1,896 yards and 14 touchdowns.

He'll likely backup Brandon Pettigrew, who the Lions selected in the first round last year.

Denver received the 137th overall pick in the draft from Philadelphia. The Broncos now have 12 picks in this year's draft – 11, 43, 45, 80, 114, 137, 183 and 220.

Wow, Sims on the Eagles?!? What a freaking steal for them. One of the most underrated and overlooked LB in the game because of the team he played on. He is worth a 3rd, maybe 2nd round pick in my opinion.

I would say they’re probably no longer targeting Sean Weatherspoon in the first round.

BPA man. Eagles are one of the few teams who live by it and succeed with it. Sims and Weatherspoon next to each other could be very tempting, but they very well might go in a different direction now.

You can still follow BAP and target a certain position

You just need to move yourself via trade into the spot where the player you want is at the top of your board. Doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice value by picking a player when they’re not at the top of your board.

Definitely frees them up for a trade up

Targetting a safety appears to make alot of sense now.

I think Taylor Mays could do wonders in Phily.

I live in Southern California

And I’ve watched my fair share of USC football. I’ve been saying it for months now, if a team takes Taylor Mays in the first round it’s a huge mistake.

I think a lot of this was that Sims would be a free agent and they wouldn’t be able to sign him.

Solid trade

solidifies the weakside with a vet.

Got him for practically nothing..so really, tough to even pick at this trade. If Brandon Jacobs is healthy, he should have no problem Landry’ing him tho…

Lions fan here

I think it’s a good trade. Ernie doesn’t fit the scheme the Schwartz is using. I’ve seen him overrun and play out of control ever since he got here. Another Millen bust is gone. He never played like a 7th overall pick. He was always getting hurt, too. Sims was entering the last year of his contract and there was NO WAY he was going to resign in Detroit.
All the Lions need now is a RB and a developemental OT for the future and this offense is probably set for years.

I wouldnt call Sims a bust.

Your right he never did play like the ninth overall pick he was selected at but still had a couple of solid seasons.

by Yankees10 on Apr 19, 2010 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He is not really a bust. he is a good player who has never really fit in Detroit.

He was good for 3 of 4 years

and did not fit the CURRENT system in Detroit.

thats what I meant.

He was a very good player for a few years.

I'll be more blunt, Ernie was not cutting it in Detroit.

His last two years were awful. If you don’t call a # 9 pick that played like him a bust, what is your definition of a bust?

I wish he could have even played like a # 39 pick in the draft, but if a team trades a guy taken that high for a disgruntled TE and a seventh round pick, that tells you something.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 19, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats the thing

Before the last 2 years he wasnt awful he was actually a pretty good player. He just doesn’t fit the system anymore. I consider a bust someone who was just never good (Jamarcus Russell, Mike Williams, etc). I consider Sims more of a dissapointment than a bust since he couldnt keep it up for more than just three or four years.

i wish

my texans traded a 5th for sims…it would make us the best LB corps in the league

2 TEs with Sheffler playing a Dallas Clark type role?

I’d think they’d put Sheffler on the field before Dennis Northcut.

What is it with Brady Quinn going to a team and then that team trading away their receiver and tight end?

Maybe Quinn's team is being nice to the WR and TE?

they don’t want him sabotaging their careers?

Dose of reality mock draft-
1) Mike Iupati OG 2) Sean Lee MLB 3) Geno Atkins DT 4) Jerome Murphy CB 5) James Starks RB 6) Phillip Dillard LB 7) Fendi Onobun TE

Now if Detroit can figure out how to stop someone

They might have a shot at not picking in the top five next year.

As far as the Broncos go, Im just going to say as a Chargers fan even I feel sorry for people wearing blue and orange. The Broncos off season and 2009 draft were surely not the way I would have gone about things, for whatever thats worth.

The Eagles continue to show that they are ready to poach good players for cheap in the prime of their careers. They will lock Sims up cheap watch.

IMO

the fans better be hoping they grab dez bryant…

Eddie Royal as a #1 Reciever? scary… but what I have noticed about the broncos fans often (and you noticed too) is that they do not always have an amazing idea of what players are good i.e. andra davis who I am surprised can still walk. I hope they still aren’t talking about getting pouncey with their pick now that they traded away marshall. they should be praying for dez bryant. Matt Tennant can give you 85-90% of what Pouncey can give you (IMO) and you can get him in the third quite possibly.
