2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 29
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. John B, lead blogger at SB Nation's New York Jets blog, Gang Green Nation, checks in to make the No. 29 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 29 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the New York Jets have selected Jerry Hughes, defensive end/outside linebacker, TCU.
John B says: How is it possible to improve the league's best defense? The Jets may have had the top unit in statistical terms, but they struggled to generate a consistent pass rush without blitzing. Rex Ryan loves to blitz, but the Jets had to do it more than he would prefer last year. Peyton Manning and the Colts picked the team apart in the second half of the AFC Championship Game.
The trade for Antonio Cromartie will help improve the pass defense on the coverage end. Taking Hughes here helps improve the pass rush. Hughes may not have a big assortment of pass rushing moves, but he does have an explosive first step and times the snap count well. He's very athletic and would transition well to 3-4 outside linebacker. While he learns the finer points of the position, he'll rotate with Bryan Thomas who isn't much of a pass rusher but is excellent in coverage and against the run. The two will compliment each other well.If the Draft plays out this way, Hughes is the way to go at 29.
The Jets are in a fortunate position in that they have no glaring needs. They could go with Golden Tate to play the slot, but there should be a good slot prospect in the second round.
Mocking Dan reacts: Everyone knows that Rex Ryan loves two things in football: Cornerbacks and pass rushers. He got his cornerback with Cromartie and Hughes would represent the pass rusher. Personally, I think this is a little early for Hughes, but it fills a really good need. John B is right thinking the other choice could be Tate. But some coaches go after what they like early, and this pick wouldn't shock me.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 3 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 4 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland, 5 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of New York's selection of Jerry Hughes? Please be sure to check out Gang Green Nation for all of your Jets needs.

I got him going mid-20's
with a strong possibilty to go to Miami or the Niners.
I think he’s a better fit for the 3-4 then Brandon Graham..so that’s the Niners.
And Hughes seems like an ideal Bill Parcells type player, so that’s Miami.
When you’re potentially the best edge rusher in the draft..no, this ain’t early….
Get HWSNBN...and they will come
I'd say Miami
but only if they move back into the 20s. 12 just seems too early.

Best edge rusher in the draft.
Double-digit sacks in year one if playing for the Jets. Skies the limit for him.
Stellar, dammit.

good pick
I think they will go offense though for another top WR
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
WR corp isn’t bad as it is right bow. Don’t get sucked in by the MSM on thinking that WR is a need. Cotchery, their #2, had 800 yards receiving in a heavy-run offense with a pick-happy rookie QB. Better QB play will equal better numbers for the WRs. The addition of Hughes could make a great defense an all-time great defense.
I gave you an A because I want the Jets to stay away from the CBs.
It is a good solid pick, but I think this great defence could use another strong CB to really shutdown the opposing passers.
They have arguably the best CB tandem in the league right now, on paper. And having a guy that can climb on QBs in a flash bodes pretty well for shutting down opposing passers.
Forgot about them picking up Cromartie.
Yes, they will not draft a CB. But personally, I don’t think a lot of Cromartie.
Jets D
gets even more formidable. Good pick

Hughes
I’m a Packer fan and I think the Packers should have taken Hughes over Kindle!!! I think Hughes is far and away the best 34 OLB and best pass rusher in the draft… He has an explosive 1st step that gets him on top of the RT in a hurry, He uses his hands well to ward off the OT, has some variety in moves and has the leverage to drive into the OT when going around the corner!
He also has the quickness and change of direction to become very good in coverage. Best time in the 3 cone drill and 4th in the 20 shuttle. As a DE he would need to gain strength for run D, but as a 34 OLB he will take on TE and RB, not OL, so his run D should be good.
My favorite player in this draft!!! Jets got a 3 down player as a rookie!!! Great Pick!!!
You did it too me w/ Revis who I wanted 2 yrs ago, and now you get Hughes too…
Hughes or Tate would both be good picks.
