2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 30
The 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls on, with each SB Nation blogger making selections for their respective teams. Gonzo, lead blogger at SB Nation's Minnesota Vikings blog, Daily Norseman, checks in to make the No. 30 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 30 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings have selected Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers.
Gonzo says: There was a part of me that really, really wanted to pull the trigger on Tim Tebow here, but I'm not sure if my inbox could have handled the influx of mail. . .both good and bad. But the first is still, in my mind, too early for Tebow, which allows us to take advantage of the gift of Devin McCourty falling to us at No. 30. McCourty is rising up the draft boards, and according to some is the second-best corner in this year's draft behind Joe Haden. McCourty is a bit in the mold of current Viking Antoine Winfield, as he's more than willing to throw his body around in the running game despite being a bit undersized. While he has his struggles in man coverage, he's shown himself to have a very good concept of where to line himself up in zones, which makes him a good fit for Minnesota's Cover 2 scheme. With the injury that Cedric Griffin suffered at the end of the NFC Championship Game, McCourty would have a chance to contribute immediately as a nickel guy at the very least, and possibly as a starter if he could beat out Asher Allen and/or Benny Sapp for the spot. Need and ability have truly met for the Vikings with this selection.
Mocking Dan reacts: This certainly is too early for Tebow, so kudos for practicing restraint. I may not have him ranked highly, but I love the pick of McCourty. He's a talented physical cornerback who is a perfect scheme fit.
My feeling is that certain playoff teams should fill needs, which McCourty would do. McCourty wouldn't have to wait behind Allen or Sapp. He's already better than both and getting better.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Everson Griffen/DE/USC, 2 - Charles Brown/OT/USC, 3 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 4 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland, 5 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Minnesota's selection of Devin McCourty? Please be sure to check out Daily Norseman for all of your Vikings needs.

The Vikes have the luxury of going in several directions with the first pick.
They could go with a CB, they could go with safety if they feel that “their” guy is the BPA. And they could also go with the heir to the Favre throne if they’ve bought into the Tebow hype and he’s still there. Or even the next big thing on the Williams wall.
This is one of the toughest first round picks to predict IMO. But McCourty is a pretty solid choice.

ESPN dreams of a Tebow-Farve connection...
McCourty’s a good pick. They could also just go BPA. I mean Minnesota doesn’t have too many holes. Just add some DBs, some OL depth, and a RB to replace Chester Taylor and they’re good to go again.

What? No Vote? A huge step back for democracy!
I would give this an A. As a Lions fan I would hate that the Vikings are making this pick. Not only because it makes them a better team, but I was hoping McCourty was going to fall to us at # 34. DAMN YOU BRAD CHILDRESS AND YOUR EVIL MINIONS!
Poll is up
Democracy saved.

Good pick
As a Vikings fan, I strongly approve of this pick. He fits the Vikings’ defense and is a very good player. Good job, Gonzo.
Charles Brown OT, Tim Tebow QB, Everson Griffen De, Golden Tate WR
This is the position the Vikings will find themselves in on April 22nd. Who would blame them for solidyfying their tackle position or shoring up the DE spot since Edwards is an RFA. Dan is wrong on this one Gonzo. If Tebow is rated by the front office as the Face of the Franchise. The next QB of the future for the Vikes, then you must take him with the 30th pick. To pass on a franchise QB now would make no sense. What about a WR. A great WR. No need but one heck of a player.
Your pick of McCourty is every bit as good as any of these for the Vikes. I think the answer will lie in how the depth of the draft is rated by the front office. If other players are close in skill but available later then they will wait. If the skill levels are disparate they will pull the trigger early. I can’t deny that few are equal to McCourty.

I agree
McCourty is a good CB that has risen up the “boards” during the off season. He is a bit of a drag down type of tackler though. That could be cleaned up perhaps. I don’t see him that much better than a Ghee, Spievey, Cook, or Arenas (one of my favorites).
Pouncey is another name bandied about for the Vikings in the first round too. I don’t see that either. While he did play guard at Florida he was the center the last two years (I believe). Matt Tennant or John Jerry or Kyle Calloway will all fit nicely in a round or two later. Interior linemen do not usually get picked early. Obviously some do but I would pass.
If Bruce Campbell or Charles Brown is on the board they may have to take one of them to groom behind McKinnie. Or they may decide to trade McKinnie after picking a youngster? Doubtful but it could happen.
With the move on Reynauld to RB it may be that they do not draft a RB at all. I personally was hoping for Jahvid Best. I think he would be great pared with AP. He is not an every down back but can take it to the house and any moment.
I think a WR will get picked and it could be Golden Tate, Demaryius Thomas, Brandon LaFell, or Damien Williams in the first. But I think they will get a guy like Eric Decker, Carlton MItchell, Jacoby Ford, or Jordan Shipley in round 3.
A defensive tackle probably will be looked at hard considering the possible suspensions and the retirement of PWill after next year. If Odrick is there they will be tempted. But I think they really like Terrence Cody. This is a BEAST of a young man and will plug up the middle for years. Some will say we just signed Kennedy to a two year deal and that is fine but he is more of a backup and could rotate with Cody after next year. If they did get Cody then Evans or Guion will probably be released. Many do not like Cody but Alabama led the nation against the run and he was the main reason. He was also the main reason why McClain looked so good. When you have to use TWO offensive linemen on every play to block this guy it limits what others could do. I just think because he is such a big boy that he gets down graded for some reason. I would seriously consider taking him. But I believe San Diego may take him before us.
So that brings me to QB. Tebow or McCoy would be excellent picks in the first round. They most likely will not be there at the end of the second round. Their college success may not mean much to many but I think to the NFL scouts it does mean much. It will be very depressing to pass on one of these guys and they turn out to be pretty good. If they are a bust then so be it. All picks have the possibility of being a bust so that should not worry a team. If they like the guy then get the guy.
But in the end, I think that we should take Daryl Washington LB TCU. This guy is fast and can cover. This is what the Vikings need just as much as anything else. A CB can be had in round 2 or 3 plus we could sign a veteran like Lito Sheppard still. I am not worried about CB that much in round 1. A LB that can play WILL & MIKE and is super fast may not be had later. The LB class is thin so getting Washington in the first is not a stretch or a reach. Washington is considered a high second in many scouting reports.
A great player, not a reach in any capacity
A needed position. By far, a solid pick.
