Bizarre stories define 2010 NFL Draft first round

Photo

This has easily been one of the most peculiar first rounds in recent memory. There were shocking picks. There are some surprise players still available. Here are my most interesting storylines following the first round.

1. Jimmy Clausen is still available: When this began, who would have expected that arguably the second-best quarterback in the draft wouldn't go in the first round? On the plus side, Clausen got to spend several hours with Erin Andrews. On the down side, he lost millions and millions of dollars. There was a lot of talk of teams trading back into the first round to get a quarterback, but they didn't have to following Clausen's descent.

2. Tim Tebow caused a stir: Everyone expected the selection of Tebow to turn heads, but not like this. To select Tebow 25th overall, Denver gave the Ravens pick 43, 70 and 114. There were rumors of interest in Tebow from Denver this week, but considering they have Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn, it seemed unlikely. But as we found out in this draft, anything is likely.

3. Buffalo drops the first bombshell: With Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, it wasn't expected Buffalo would take a running back early. But the Bills did by picking up C.J. Spiller ninth overall. They passed on Clausen and offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga to select Spiller, which was a surprise. Fans over at Buffalo Rumblings seem content with Spiller, but when is he going to get the ball?

4. Jacksonville one-ups the Bills: Before people could calm down on the Spiller pick the name Tyson Alualu was being called out by NFL commissioner Roger Gooddell. Alualu is an animal. He plays with a lot of emotion and toughness. He's perceived as a second-round pick. To call it a reach is a stretch.

Star-divide

5. Trades aplenty: We expected plenty of trades on the second day of the draft. But they happened a lot on day one. In all, 10 of the first 32 picks were involved in trades. None more so than pick 24. It went from New England to Denver to Philadelphia to Dallas. Finally Dallas used it on Dez Bryant, which wasn't a surprise at all.

6. Oakland makes sense?: The Raiders were supposed to take Jason Pierre-Paul or Bruce Campbell. It was supposed to be a good laugh for all. But Raiders owner Al Davis is the one who is cackling this evening. With Rolando McClain, he made the safe pick. He took a guy who is a thumper with a bad attitude on the field. Al Davis made a smart pick. How bizarre is that?

7. St. Louis sitting pretty: With the first pick in the second round, the Rams are probably hearing a lot of calls. Namely, they may be hearing from Cleveland, Buffalo and Carolina who may target Clausen. All of that interest could drive up the price for the pick.

8. Sergio Kindle may be a wanted man: For about half of the last 10 picks of the first round, commenters on MTD thought the Texas pass rusher was going to be the pick. But he never heard his name called. He could be another hot commodity on the second day of the draft.

9. San Francisco hits a dinger with linemen: The 49ers were one of two teams coming into Thursday with two first-round picks. The 49ers soundly crushed a home run with their picks. San Francisco traded up to take offensive tackle Anthony Davis. It didn't seem like they needed to, but he's the one guy they absolutely had to come out of the draft with. They used their other pick on guard Mike Iupati. Like I said a month ago, if the Niners went tackle and Iupati, they'd have their offensive line set for years.

10. Demaryius Thomas goes before Dez Bryant: Just about everyone expected Dez Bryant to slip in the draft. But few thought that Thomas, who is recovering from a broken foot, would go ahead of Bryant. The Broncos picked Thomas with the 22nd pick while Bryant went to Dallas with the 24th pick.

11. Philly moves on Brandon Graham: When Philadelphia traded up to the 13th pick, the assumption was that the Eagles were after safety Earl Thomas. But the Eagles threw everyone for a loop by picking the Michigan defensive end. Graham has been a riser during the offseason, but to go to Philadelphia was a surprise.

Waiting and seeing with Alualu

Gene put together the best draft last year, so he obviously knew something.

One thing I do know is that I’m going to have to be comatose drunk to be at the Jags season opener and not kill one of the Tebow zombines

Absolutely! I know my rankings don’t really mean anything to anyone but me, but I had the guy rated 60th overall. To go 10th? Crazy. Jacksonville couldn’t try and trade down at all and try and get him later? Who would have taken him? I don’t think you’d find a non-Jaguars fan to say it wasn’t a reach.

It's impossible to say either way

I understand that the Jaguars will get all kinds of bad press for this and there’s no way we can refute it, but how can we know that the teams behind the Jaguars weren’t targeting him too? When I look at this player, I find it confusing that he was projected as a 3-4 DE and a 2nd round pick. His size is comparable to Gerald McCoy’s yet he’s faster and was more productive in college.

To be fair the Jags couldnt get out of that pick

Blame that on the Crabtree contract, last year at that slot. They did go with a safe player, and reached a mile to do so

by Foilhat on Apr 22, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

The Chargers traded up to the 12th pick

There really isn’t much difference between picking 10th and 12th; just because the 10th pick held out last year doesn’t mean if the Chargers traded up and still draft Ryan Mathews 10th instead of 12th, that he’d hold out.

The next defensive tackle that was picked was Dan Williams, which was 16 picks later, and he’s a Nose Tackle (generally considered a slightly-more valuable position that a 4-3 DT). This was a horrible pick, and an insult to their fans.

Indeed

Good player, sleeper, and a guy likely to be a solid player. But top 10? Holy crap! I had him 54th.

I like Wilson a lot

It’s just that the Jets are already talking about cutting Faneca, Thomas, and Ellis because they spent too much in free agency the last few years. That leaves Mike DeVito and some guy pulled off the street as their DEs. The Jets have major holes – they are scouting the circus for a backup ILB.

With Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, it wasn’t Buffalo would take a running back early. But the Bills did by picking up C.J. Spiller ninth overall.

Is Marshawn Lynch still on the trading block?

the Eagles threw everyone for a loop by picking the Michigan defensive end. Graham has been a riser during the offseason, but to go to Philadelphia was a surprise.

The only reason why in my opinion is because everybody assumed they were going DB for the past couple months ever since we acquired Darryl Tapp. I love the move since it will give us a DE to compliment Trent Cole and I read that he was going to be drafted by the guys who went with Pierre-Paul and I didn’t want them to get Graham.

Yea we are not upset in the least.

We think he is a great fit. He will be good many wanted OT but we knew that DE was a possibility because it was a defiant need. Also Polian said they were going to go BPA and that he didn’t see the OT’s being deep in this draft which made us think we may not go OT. Also when we got within 10 picks I was pretty sure we were not going OT even with Brown available.

Trading down to get McCourty makes sense now. Versatile CB doubles as ST gunner and returnman, and Belichick loves those kind of guys. Was confused about this pick considering Odrick was available, but now I can understand why McCourty was the way to go.

I posted this question in a fanpost, but didn't get an answer

I’m not trying to be a smart ass, I legitimately don’t know the answer to this question:

Why was Tyson Alualu considered a 2nd round, 3-4 DE in the first place?

He has Gerald McCoy’s size. He’s faster than all the DTs at the top of the draft. He’s explosive. Good character. Durable. Productive in college.

Why wasn’t he considered a top 10 pick?

Follow me on Twitter

by Adam Stites on Apr 23, 2010 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

probably several reasons

Lesser competition for one. Maybe little details on the tape, such as how he fought off blocks, stood his ground on running plays, etc. Suh and McCoy were just excellent all around.

He’s a good player. But the Jags should have tried to get Denver’s deal from Philly. 99% Alualu is still on the board, plus two third rounders.

by ct17 on Apr 23, 2010 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

You have no idea if Alualu would've been on the board

Just because Kiper and co. say he’s a 2nd rounder doesn’t mean the Jaguars were the only ones who thought he was worth a 1st.

As for lesser competition, that’s the east coast bias talking. How many great players need to come out of the Pac-10 before people realize it’s a legitimate, power conference?

Pats moving up?

Unheard of. Haven’t seen that anywhere. I roam all around the place, and haven’t seen Alualu that high. It’s one thing to draft him high, it’s another to give up multiple picks to move up to get him.

by ct17 on Apr 23, 2010 1:13 AM EDT up reply actions

You can roam all you want

You’re not going to see it because people (myself included) flat out missed it. The Jags say they kept as quiet as possible because they knew there was interest from the Titans and Patriots and they didn’t want those teams trading ahead of them because of their interest.

Probably not.

Dude was rising like crazy. Rumor is Jags could have traded down a few spots with the 49ers. Seems like saving money and getting a 4th round pick would be a no brainer, unless they had reason to believe someone else would have taken Alualu, which apparently they did.

Its only a rumor

most rumors proved to be false in this draft. I am sorry but he would still be available most likely.

Agreed, most rumors proved to be false, such as Alualu being a 2nd round pick…

Change the word and it still works.

Wow. Just...wow.

“I really get a lot out of helping hunting the homeless.”

Whatever, change three letters and it’s the same thing.

Unbelievable...

Projections/rumors getting proven false is as absurd as helping/hunting homeless…

And I didn’t say same thing… I said it still works, which it clearly does.

Pierre-Paul

Picking up a project end over an established end like Morgan? Yeah, I’d say Jerry Reese made us doubt his scouting abilities. He better know something we don’t because we passed up Morgan, Iupati, and others just to grab a project DE. This pick will send the “trading Osi” rumors swirling. And now… I kinda believe them.

I do too..

Reese said he ain’t trading Osi.

He also said he ain’t drafting gymnasts…but he drafted one. So that means Osi’s traded…hopefully for Rolando

That confused me more than JPP.

Although I think Alu^2 and Tebow (considering what they gave up to get him) were worse picks.

doesn’t this mean it’s going to be even harder for Detroit to get a decent OT out of this draft since they just traded away their 2nd round pick…? Not sure what the thought process was there.

Detroit

They don’t have many picks left. And still holes to fill. Not sure they had to move on Best, how many teams want a RB really bad? Sort of like when the Jets moved up to get Keller, they gave up good picks to move up a little for a guy that no one expected to go that early.

I mocked Wang to Detroit in the 4th. That may be your best bet. Otherwise, you can wait until next year.

Yeah I don’t get it either, but I’m not a Detroit fan, just saw it as a headscratcher when they had a perfectly great opportunity to get the best DT Suh and then find a good OT with the second pick in the second round

by fhqwagads on Apr 23, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I thought OT was the biggest argument against taking Suh. I thought Bests’ concussion issues would drop him out of the first if not out of the 2nd.
