2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 33
The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft begins. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. VanRam, lead blogger at SB Nation's St. Louis Rams blog, Turf Show Times, checks in to make the No. 33 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 33 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the St. Louis Rams have selected Everson Griffen, DE, USC.
VanRam says: It's hard to pass up receivers like Golden Tate or Arrelious Benn or Demaryius Thomas with this pick, given the Rams needs on offense and having a rookie QB at the helm. Still, the Rams need playmakers on defense just as much, and securing an outside pass rushing threat to play opposite Chris Long is the defense's biggest need.
Billy Devaney will have plenty of options with this pick, likely including some lucrative trade offers. The first overall pick will have much more to say about the overall direction of the franchise, but in a draft as loaded with talent as this one, the #33 pick will go along way toward determining just how fast the Rams get somewhere.
Mocking Dan reacts: At first, I was pretty surprised by the pick considering the wide receivers on the board. But then it made sense. There will be plenty of wide receivers still around in the later rounds the team could go after. However, there won't be a pass rusher of Griffen's caliber. Also, it's hard to see head coach Steve Spagnuolo not selecting a pass rusher in this draft and Griffen is a good one.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Golden Tate/WR/Notre Dame, 2 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland, 3 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech, 4 - Damian Williams/WR/USC 5 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of Rams' selection of Griffen? Please be sure to check out Turf Show Times for all of your Rams needs.

Not a good pick.
Not sure after taking a QB how they are not going to go OT and Bruce Campbell is still available.

they drafted an OT #2 overall last year.
they already made the attempt to protect their QB
Get HWSNBN...and they will come

you can get RTs later in the draft, the scrapheap and by converting Gs so i don’t think that’s a good criticism. Personally i think this is a great pick which fits who coaches the Rams and what needs they have.

OT isn't in our top 7 needs
Alex Barron and Jason Smith have the two tackle spots locked, and we have some options behind them. At DE, we just don’t have enough youth at the position aside from Long. It’s a solid pick IMO.
You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In *St. Louis* his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well, *Steven Jackson* was the best.

I like the pick OK
But i gotta disagree with you on our OTs. I think our O-line needs addressed. Nothing matters until something happens to our franchise QB. The probability of that needs to be minimized. Like I say I like Griffen but we can’t possibly think our line is good enough to keep Bradford off his back. He’s gonna have to play this year, and we went through 3 QBs last year, and we have an LT with a concussion injury in his past now, and Barrons work ethic is questionable at best. Too many ands for my blood. We need to answer a couple of those at some point before the 7th need or risk Bradfords health. Just IMHO
Good pick
beef up the defense to keep games close so the rookie QB doesn’t have to throw it 40 times a game. Smart pick
Life is a waste of time and time is a waste of life... so lets get wasted all the time and have the time of our lives!
A lot of mocks have had him...
in the first round. Good pick. A WR will be there at 3-1.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Solid pick
Certainly no one would say Golden Tate isn’t a good pick. But you must build the defense first from the inside out. It had to be tough passing on a great DT. Don’t compound the problem by passing on a Very good DE. Campbell is a boom or bust. To risky. Pick up Decker at the top of the third and you have your own Golden Tate. Solid selection.
I can see St Louis picking up Suh and then going with a QB here if, for some reason, they really don’t like Bradford or Clausen. But they will have to see something pretty special. If they trade down and let someone else have Bradford or Suh they can have

Sorry partialpost-
If trading down they could have any of the bottom three picks in the first, Griffen, another pick in the bottom of the 2nd, and probably a first and second pick next year, plus a player or two. Man I think they would want to do that, especially if they valued anyone other tan Bradford.

Since we didn't get Suh
This is the best move for us. Hell even if we had gotten Suh, I’d have considered it. I’m sure Van knows we gotta do something to protect our QB nut passing on Griffen would have been a mistake.
I like the way you wrote it
We have to get our nut passing together this season.

I like the pick, especially the position
I’m just surprised someone didn’t take him earlier. But I suppose somebody has to fall.

Mike Mayock is dead-on in his evaluation of Earl Thomas. Bank on it.
I think the Rams would be better off taking a WR now and a DE in the third or fourth.
Austen Lane, Jermaine Cunningham, and a few others will be around later. The WRs that will be taken in the second round are pretty impressive and could help turn the offence around right away. ie. Damian Williams or Golden Tate or A. Benn for three.
But Griffen is a good value at # 33.
good point
and I think that’s probably a route they’d go, figuring that Spagnuolo et al have a good track record molding talent.

Solid pick
I can’t shake the Steve Smith comparisons with Golden Tate but, you are right. A DE of this quality will not be around for 3-1. A WR just might.
