2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 38
The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls along. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. Chris Pokorny, lead blogger at SB Nation's Cleveland Browns blog, Dawgs By Nature, checks in to make the No. 38 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 38 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Cleveland Browns have selected Colt McCoy, QB, Texas.
Chris Pokorny says: After taking safety Eric Berry in the first round, there was only one quarterback that interested me in the second round: Colt McCoy. I was worried that the Washington Redskins might attempt to draft him in front of me, but after the trade for Donovan McNabb, I was able to move forward with a game plan to remove the thought of having to go through two years of either Jake Delhomme or Seneca Wallace under center.
Ideally, it'd be better for the Browns to trade down a little bit in round two and still get McCoy, something I see as a real possibility considering how much the front office covets additional draft picks. If there aren't any suitors when the Browns are on the clock though, McCoy is an acceptable option considering the moves the team has made on defense through free agency. McCoy's accuracy would be long-awaited in Cleveland after the near-50 percent completion rates for Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. His arm strength has been criticized, but he had an impressive showing at his Pro Day.
Mocking Dan reacts: It's clear the Browns need a young quarterback While I like McCoy – and Mike Holmgren may as well – there are too many quality players still available to take a developmental talent. There are some good wide receivers still available, and Dwyer would be a good fit. There are also some great pieces that could be added to the defensive line. It's hard to disagree with the pick of McCoy, but what really sets him apart from a quarterback that could be had in the third?
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Bruce Campbell/OT/Maryland, 2 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech, 3 - Damian Williams/WR/USC, 4 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona, 5 - Brandon Spikes/LB/Florida

And that's what they get........a bad QB. Badabump! [Rim shot]
LOL.
Honestly, I think Tim Tebow or Jevan Snead have a lot more upside than Colt McCoy.
I’m against second round QBs. I would rather have Campbell , dweyr or Williams

Wootton?
hehe, you caught it! Originally, before the McNabb trade, Washington took McCoy and Cle took Wootton.

I like this pick
I think McCoy is very underrated because of his size and his struggles in the bowl game last year. This guy makes plays and is a hard worker. Cleveland already addressed defense with possibly the best player in this draft, Eric Berry, for the first round. Jake Delhomme/Seneca Wallace are not a long term answer and you got a good rlatively young O line, good young RB, and very promising young WR’s. Drafting a future franchise QB is the right way to go, especially considering the amount of defensive talent that will be available later.

I agree. browns fans like this deal but it is the other fans that are a little more critical.
The only other way i would have gone was Damian Williams. Williams fits a holmgren type of offense, but you can get solid receivers in later rounds. The dropoff IMO between Colt and Lefevour or Pike is much larger than between Williams and lets say Andre Roberts.

I want McCoy, but I was hoping with our next pick.
For this pick I have a man crush on Demaryius Thomas, but that’s just me.

Don’t like the pick to be honest (voted A by accident – prolly B or C). I do want McCoy but I don’t think a top-50 pick is warranted. Yet, I know McCoy won’t likely be there when we pick again, so I guess that’s the reasoning.
Ehh they have bigger needs

Lets see I can name some
a) Safety they got eric berry
b) starting CB they got sheldon brown
c) right tackle they got tony pashos
d) Outside linebacker they got chris Gocong who can rush the passer decently and fits the 3-4
e) Power runner to complement Jerome Harrison They got peyton hillis who can run between the tackles, catch in the passing game, and block. From broncos fans I talked to, he was a fan favorite and definitely deserved more playing time
f) tight end the browns signed a FA during the season Evan Moore who they like AND they got Ben Watson
I would say after drafting berry, getting a young QB is DEFINITELY high on the browns needs. they could definitely use a CB but more of a high ceiling guy that would play nickel next year…the kind of guy you would find in the third.
