Top of first round in NFL Draft looks set

In the past 24 hours, mock drafts have become much easier to build.

The Rams today cut longtime quarterback Marc Bulger. It stands to reason that Sam Bradford of Oklahoma is assured of being the first overall pick.

Detroit traded a fifth-round pick for left guard Rob Sims. That permanently keeps Jeff Backus at left tackle. That likely knocks Okung out of consideration for the second overall pick. Instead, it will almost certainly be Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Although Tampa Bay hasn't made a move, has expected them all offseason to take the best defensive tackle available.

The Redskins traded for quarterback Donovan McNabb. That eliminates them from drafting Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen. It would almost lock them into taking Oklahoma State offensive tackle Russell Okung.

So it would be a shock if the first four picks didn't break like this:

1.St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford | Quarterback | Oklahoma
2. Detroit Lions - Ndamukong Suh | Defensive tackle | Nebraska
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy | Defensive tackle | Oklahoma
4. Washington Redskins - Russell Okung | Offensive tackle | Oklahoma State

Unless I'm mistaken and/or illiterate, that would be the first time in the history of the NFL Draft that the first four picks have come from the same conference. In 1967, four of the first five picks came from the Big Ten.

But the real question becomes what does Kansas City do with the fifth overall pick? Hit the poll below and let us know what you think. I don't want to know what you want the Chiefs to do, but what they will do.

Slight typo

I believe you mean first time the first four picks have come from same “conference” rather than “college.” Not to be a stickler

Redskins only have 4 picks right now, #4, #103, #135 and #211

I think they’d be pushing hard for a trade down.

Who would want to trade into the top 5? Lots of $$$

I didn't say it'd happen, but I bet they are going to try

It will take a team that falls in love with Jimmy Clausen

Usually, the only time teams trade into the top 5 is for a QB. Which team do you think would be tempted to trade up to get Clausen?

This sucks.

As a Seattle fan, I’ve come to terms with the Seahawks taking Trent Williams. I was hoping for Clausen (before we traded for Whitehurst) or McCoy (when people began hopping on the “Okung to Lions” bandwagon).

As for the Chiefs, it’s going to be Bulaga. Sorry Chiefs fans. I know you want Berry and don’t think Albert has gotten enough of a chance at LT, but I think you’ll be very happy with Bulaga. He is superb technician with “quicker than you’d think” feet. The relationship between Scott Piloli and Iowa head coach kirk Ferentz makes me even more confident Bulaga will be the pick. But also don’t rule out a bit of a shocker like Dan Williams.

Dan Williams is who i think it will be.

I want it to be McClain or Berry but i think it will be Williams

You can draft defensive line to stop a player at the line.
You can draft linebackers to stop a player 3-4 yards down the field.
Or you can draft a safety to tackle him 15 yards down the field.
I'll take the first two any day.

What if Okung is somehow there?

If Okung falls it could be him but i'd still lean towards Williams.

Pioli traditionally hasn’t provided a lot of offensive help in the draft. He has relied on getting savy vet’s and allowing Weis to work his magic imo.

A Glenn Dorsey- Dan Williams- Tyson Jackson line does sound intriguing.

Even though Dorsey, IMO, is a much better fit as a 3 tech than a 5 tech.

Dorsey has gotten much stronger since college and he holds his ground very well.

He did struggle getting sacks but i believe it was because Ron Edwards (our NT) was single teamed and both of our 3-4 DE’s drew double teams every play. Edwards was pushed back routinely even with a single team.

Starting to get the vibe that it could be Berry at six. I know they have Babineaux, but he would move over to strong.

It's likely he will be the only player that's not a reach.

Because IMO Trent Williams, C.J. Spiller, and Derrick Morgan are slight reaches at 6. If the top 5 is Bradford, Suh, McCoy, Okung, and Berry I’d like Trent Williams, simply because we could still get either Morgan or Spiller at 14 but I highly doubt Trent Williams is there at 14. My guess is the Seahawks end up with Trent Williams (at 6) and Derrick Morgan (at 14). But I guess you never know. It’s the NFL Draft.

what's with everyone's man-crush with Bulaga?

First of all, Bless you.

I don’t think he’s top five material. And if Pioli is going to reach, he’ll reach for a need – not Bulaga. I agree with ChiefsFanJon and either Berry or Dan Williams. This is going to be a defense-heavy draft for the Chiefs.

Seems like the consensus right now

for the top 4.

I think the Chefs surprise with their pick of course. Dan Williams seems to be a similar situation to Tyson Jackson last year. Williams is pretty much a top 20 pick at this point..I really doubt he falls past that given his size and the premium for NT’s right now.

Who I want the Chefs to select is Trent Williams, just so the top 5 can be like the All Big 12 team.

Maybe Seattle can select Jimmy Clausen (no conference..doesn’t count!) then the Browns get Earl Thomas.

..of course, Al Davis selects Tebow out of spite

This is a close one

but if it were me I’d go with Berry. A bit of a gamble to wait until #36 to see if the last of the good OT prospects is still on the board (Campbell? Saffold?) to be sure, but with the game that Berry’s got, and their need at safety…

by Mr. X on Apr 5, 2010 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

I’d go with Berry if I was the Chiefs.

by Yankees10 on Apr 5, 2010 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

How good is the Chiefs' kicker?

Because, you know, Pioli will sometimes reach for a player to fill a need . . . j/k

I like Dan Williams, Berry, McClain or a LT at the #5. Williams and McClain would be building blocks for the defense, which is sorely in need of some help. Berry would be nice as a BPA, but I don’t think he offers enough positional value (and the Chief already have a couple of decent DBs).

I think Pioli would like to trade down (like everbody else in the top 10) but won’t find a buyer unless a team is really high on Clausen and is worried Seattle will grab him.

How good is the Chiefs' kicker? Damn good

* KC now has the best coaching staff in the league
* 9-7 is a real possibility in 2010 IF the Chiefs get 4 new starters
* KC will NOT draft a LT in the first round, and the draft WILL be heavy on defense

by stagdsp on Apr 5, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it would be foolish to pass over Berry.
