Who are 'your guys' in the NFL Draft?
We did this last year, so how about we make it an annual thing at MTD? The idea is simple. Which players do you just have a gut feeling about? The caveats are they can't be obvious high draft picks or players from your favorite school. That's cheating. And lazy.
For example, "my guys" last year were Jamarca Sanford, Julian Edelman, Kevin Barnes and Tyrell Sutton.
Sanford, to my knowledge, never made it into a game in 2009 after being drafted by Minnesota in the seventh round. Edelman was taken by New England in the seventh round and looks like the next Wes Welker. Barnes, who moonlights as the singer for Of Montreal (just kidding), was taken in the third round. He played sparingly. Sutton went undrafted before being picked up by Green Bay, which cut him. He landed on Carolina's roster and contributed pretty nicely on special teams.
So, they're maybe not stars, but "my guys" still have potential. Here are "my guys" for the 2010 NFL Draft:
- Walter Thurmond III, cornerback, Oregon
Reason: My man crush on Thurmond runs deep. Unfortunately, he missed most of the 2009 season with a bad knee injury. Oregon wouldn't say what it was, but it was so bad that he hasn't been able to run during offseason workouts. Thurmond was also slowed in 2008 with a pelvis injury. But when he's healthy, he's a playmaker.
- Freddie Barnes, wide receiver, Bowling Green
Reason: Everyone knows that Barnes is no athletic freak and that he doesn't time well. But what he does is catch the football – maybe better than anyone in this year's draft.
- James Starks, running back, Buffalo
Reason: Starks was injured for much of the 2009 season, but he's a really talented runner. He's smooth and his running style looks effortless. He's tested fairly well since coming back from a bad shoulder injury and has a projectable frame at 6-foot-2.
- Nate Byham, tight end, Pittsburgh
Reason: He'll never be a superstar, but Byham should have a long NFL career. He's a great blocker and was underutilized as a receiver in Pittsburgh's run-heavy scheme.

You have a picture of my guy up...
I love Walt Thurmond III and it sucked when he went down this year, I hope my Eagles take him in the 4th or 5th round and he will be a future starter most likely when Asante Samuel leaves. Hopefully we can get Joe Haden as well and they will be one of the top CB tandems for years to come.
Jamarca Sanford
You should give yourself some more credit on Sanford – he’s become a core special teams player in Minnesota.
It’s too bad the Browns didn’t bring Sutton back home.
Dunno if its a must for the player to be a late round small school "Gem"
But I’d say
Darius Marshall -Marshall
Deji Karim Southern Illinois
Marshall is a lot like Ahmed Bradshaw..so for obvious reasons.
And Karim starred at Southern Illinois, a lot like Brandon Jacobs (but he’s not 6"4 265lbs)
I like Freddie Barnes...
… Stephen Williams of Toledo and of course, Jameson Konz. It seems like the Kent State QBs are just meant to be stars in the NFL.
Here’s a list of players who everyone is “down” on that I think will excel and do very well- they’re not “unknowns”, but everyone dislikes them so much they’re going to get under-drafted:
Ciron Black, OT, LSU
Danario Alexander, WR, MIZZ
Zac Robinson, QB, OSU
Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama – He’s rising again, but I think he’ll still be underdrafted.
Eric Norwood, OLB, USCarolina
Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State
Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan
Taylor Mays, S, USCalifornia
I’m not arguing that these players aren’t well known. I just think that they’ve become extremely undervalued and will be better professionals than many of the players who play the same position as them and who will be drafted before them.
Konz was a TE. Of those guys you listed who people are down on, who do you like the most and why?
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Oh, wow. Guess I overlooked and just assumed he was a QB.
Out of the players people are down on, I don’t think I can really pinpoint a favorite. Norwood, in my opinion, is the most NFL ready 3-4 OLB, but I still don’t think he’s a first round talent- I just think a lot of the 3-4 OLB/DEs in this draft are overrated.
I think Cody is the best 3-4 NT in the draft and has shown his commitment to staying in shape- he’ll make a second round team extremely happy, but should be a top 20 pick.
Spikes performs on the field, where it matters, and if he drops to the third round, he’ll be a steal. He should be a top 35 pick.
Ciron Black will be a mid-late round pick who will perform well enough to be regarded a top 5 tackle in this class. He should be a second round pick.
Danario Alexander is like Freddie Barnes. Overlooked. He’ll be a great #2 receiver, but will be go in the fourth or fifth round. He should be considered up with Brandon LaFell and Demaryius Thomas. I have Alexander in the second tier of WRs in this draft (behind Bryant and Tate).
Zac Robinson will be a quality project QB and, down the road, will be an able starter for a team. He has more of a future at QB than Tebow.
Sean Lee is a first round talent that got injured. I put him in the same boat as Brandon Spikes- he should be gone in the first 35, but will drop to the third round due to concerns. He’ll do extremely well wherever.
So out of those players, I guess I like Cody the most. He’ll be an instant starter and could start on almost any team in the league. If the Bills go Clausen #9 and Cody in the second, I’d rate them the highest of any team in the draft, bar some incredible move. Cody was a consistent player and while he may have gotten “tired”, he has worked off some weight and should have increased stamina.
I really like Black...
and think since he’s been sinking, someone is gonna be very happy with this kid… I know, the “intangibles”, but he get’s it done on gameday where it counts…
Armanti Edwards
Either as a WR or QB, this guy has what it takes.
I also love Marcus Easley, the guy has nice size, measurables, and is a good worker. He was a walkon at Uconn, and has worked his stock up to where it is now.
Rusty Smith out of Florida Atlantic is my special late round QB. He just strikes me as a guy who should succeed.
I also like Jason Fox, and Micah Johnson
Carolina’s loving Sutton, he’s a great third stringer, even better than fourth round pick Mike Goodson, whom we had pretty high expectations too. If anyone remembers Nick Goings, that’s who he’s being compared to over at CSR. :)
Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.
120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good
89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad
Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless
Sanford
He started a game for them last year and probably going to compete with Tyrell Johnson for the starting job.
Donald Butler, LB, WASH
Just a huge fan of this productive ILB that could be plugged in to an NFL defense immediately.
"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said. "It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."
Some of my choices
Ciron Black
Danario Alexander
Donovan Warren
Trevard Lindley
Darryl Sharpton
AJ Edds
Pat Angerer
Morgan Burnett is definitely my guy.
Other guys I am a big fan of:
Marshall Newhouse
John Jerry
Antonio Brown
Emmanuel Sanders
Myron Lewis
Zac Robinson
Micah Johnson
Donald Butler
Ben Tate
If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.
Great list

I agree with Walter Thurmond.
Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, DE and Donald Butler, LB from UW.
Sean Canfield, QB, OSU
Charles Brown, OT, USC
Earl Thomas, S, Texas (the last two aren’t late guys, but I think Thomas is roughly equal to Berry, and Brown is tackle I’d like to see most on the Seahawks, even over Okung).
Lamarr Houston, DT, Texas
Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA
Mitch Petrus, G, Arkansas (anyone who does the BP that many times is impressive)
(Lot of Pac 10 guys, I know).
I'll pick 4 like you

Junior Galette, DE, Stillman

I wish I’ve seen more of Roberts. A lot of people are high on him.

ya can't find much...
on Roberts, but I got to see him a couple times and this kid is gonna be one of the steals of this draft… Good hands, and I would argue one of the most polished route runners this year… He’ll be tough to sit on the sidelines on gameday, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him starting before the end of year one….

Hmm
Dekoda Watson, LB, FSU
Already a solid player. I think he has higher potential than what he’s shown in college due to terrible coaching. He was forced to play underweight too and I’ve heard he’s putting on weight.
Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
Has really good speed and physical tools but played with bad quarterbacks his whole college career.
O’Brien Schofield, OLB, Wisconsin
Pretty beastly player who might not get drafted due to his ACL tear.

I can't take Nate Allen or Tim Tebow?

Love Amari Spievey for a cover-2 team
he was great to the points of being avoided at Iowa and I really love CBs that take run support seriously.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

My Guys
RB James Starks – Slender Frame, fast but not quick, great receiver out of the backfield. High School QB. Could play Wildcat. Needs to learn how to block better. Could help a team as a KR/PR, and 3rd RB. (he was my QB in High School)
WR Taylor Price – Reminds me of Miles Austin. Had a horrible QB at Ohio. Still made plays. Will take a hit over the middle, and hold on to the ball. Tough, willing blocker. Good route runner.
CB Javier Arenas – If a team uses him as their Nickel CB he could flourish. Great with zones. dosnt have great speed. Can help as a PR man.
CB/S Akwasi Owusu-Ansah – So raw, but so talented. Height/Speed speciman. Also can help as a Return man. (see the theme?)
www.fantasydaddy.com
what about Naaman Roosevelt. there is all kinds of love for starks and all kinds of love for Freddie barnes and price as sleepers but no one ever mentions Naaman.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
im not sure if Naaman will get drafted
if he came out early last season, he could have been a 5th round pick. now it looks like he may be a 7th rounder. But hes worth a shot late in the draft.
I just went with Starks because he was my QB in high school

Naaman is projected in many places as a fifth rounder right now. the guy has all the skills to be a very good WR in the NFL and is going to be a steal. the only major criticisms are
a) He is skinny and isn’t that well built (but can put on weight still)
b) He doesn’t have good timed speed…neither did Jerry Rice…Not that he is rice. Roosevelt is one of those players that is faster in pads. He ran a 4.6 40 but he has blown by guys that run faster than that without pads. the tape is there on him.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
freddie barnes gets all the love but Naaman’s numbers are just as impressive. Naaman’s production dropped, but the QB changed to an inexperienced sophmore and he didn’t get as many looks in the offense. The only difference between him and barnes is that Barnes is slower in timed speed, and barnes is about 20 pounds heavier…
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
I wouldnt say Naaman's numers are just as impressive.
He had 70 receptions last year. Barnes had 155. Thats more than double.
Look at career #s. They are pretty comparable. Naaman however has a much better YAC and YPC than Barnes. Naaman also had very bad QB play. People give Taylor Price from Ohio some slack b/c his QB play was terrible…in fact OUs QB play was maybe better than Buffalo’s. Buffalo had an inexperienced sophmore QB that couldn’t hit his targets. If he didn’t have such solid receivers he would have been completely terrible. You can’t 150 passes when half of the passes thrown to you are very off target…
Tyler Sheehan>>>>>>>>Zach Maynard
(plus Naaman was injured for 2 games and would have gotten to 1,000 receiving yards easily if healthy)
look at the tape on Naaman. the tape really tells the tale. he bailed out the QB several times.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.
My Guys

Andrew Quarles

Joe McKnight
These guys are not unknowns but have slipped down draftboards for various reasons (attitude, suspension, system, injuries etc.) but I have a strong feeling that these, along with a bunch of others like Thaddeus Gibson who produced in college will find a way to produce in the pros. Everyone talks about the intangibles with regards to Tebow, I am not one to disagree with that statement but I believe that others have these skills or untapped potential.
I also love Sean Lee and believe he will produce at an equal level as James Laurinaitis and Paul Posluszny, a solid, tackle machine
TE Andrew Quarless—Penn State: not a well rounded player, but a very developed deep threat style TE who just seems to have a nose for the endzone. I don’t think he is a key-type player for anyteam, but I won’t be surprised if he stands out in the NFL as a Scheffler type of player that is considered a scoring threat…
S Jeromy Miles — UMass: playmaking style hittting safety, but with the all around range and athleticism to cover deep and shift back to underneath zones to make the play. Really savvy, recognizes keys, just love to watch him flying around and I hope some team who needs competition for starter takes a chance on him…
So many great DBs in this class, but Akwasi Owosu-Ansah and A.J. Jefferson would be late 3rd rounders any other year and they will likely go later than that in 2010… Also a lot of WRs to like from the 3rd round through the 6th. I really like Cartlon Mitchell, S.Florida, but that isn’t a stretch of the imagination…
There's a big hard sun, beating on the big people, in the big hard world.

RB- James Starks. A little skinny. very good field vision (HS QB). Decent elusiveness and speed. Excellent receiver who is a major threat in the passing game. Was considered a first day pick (when first day was 1st 2-3 rounds).
WR Taylor Price- Playmaker. Goes over the middle and has solid build. Very good speed and good route runner.
WR Naaman Roosevelt- He is the one MAC WR that doesn’t seem to be talked about as much as Barnes or Price. Roosevelt was also a HS QB. His Measurables aren’t great but he is just a playmaker. He is a very good route runner and gets great YAC b/c he finds lanes to run through in the secondary after the catch. He is very elusive and at times hard to tackle. He will go low b/c he is skinny and has bad timed speed, but he has great gameday speed and speed in pads. gluehands, but not a good blocker.
CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah- Great Size Great speed. Decent hands and good jumping ability. very raw and needs some time to develop but has an extremely high ceiling.
DE/OLB Jason Worlids. Good speed, good pass rushing moves. solid pass rusher in the later rounds
DE/OLB O’Brian Schofield- Very undersized. not extremely strong. relentless pass rusher with a very high motor. Too small to be a DE in a 4-3 (even with weight gain). Can gain some weight and could be a good Tweener prospect.
S Kurt Coleman. Not great measurables. a little undersized. not great speed. however, he is a very good tackler and has great instincts. he is smart enough to compensate for his lack of size and speed. Just a natural playmaker
CB- trevard Lindley. worth a look late. very smart CB who has fallen b/c of a bad season and not great speed.
I teach good life choices. That’s why I almost didn’t graduate High School.

Aaron Hernandez TE UF – I think he’ll surprise people and turn out better than Gresham
Tony Washington OT ACU – He’s made some bad mistakes in his past but seems to have turned the corner. He’s a massive talent at OT and could turn out better than Ducasse or even Campbell.
Seyi Ajirotutu WR Fresno State – Big guy at WR, and not the fastest, but could surprise some people as a slot or 4th receiver.
Thad Lewis
Not an outstanding skill set, but has the tools to start and do well with some years of development. Reminds me of David Garrard with a little less arm strength, but the same great short to mid range accuracy and athleticism.
Jarrett Brown is my other guy. I think he could be special if he is allowed to learn behind a starter on a capable team. Has the skill set, just needs more developing and time to materialize.

My four favorite lower prospects.
Sean Canfield, QB OSU – Don’t know why he’ll be drafted so low, think he’s actually got a shot at starting somewhere.
Jason Fox, OT Miami – Going to be under-drafted due to injury concerns, I think he’ll pull it together.
Jevean Snead, QB Ole Miss – His reputation has been unfairly shattered by his bad Jr. year. How fickle people can be.
Koa Misi, LB/DE Utah – Think he’ll surprise a lot of people and be an NFL star as a 3-4 OLB.
So what are the chances for an Avalanche vs. Sabres finals, eh?

Rusty Smith
Brandon Ghee (I know he is rated kinda high but I think he will be the best CB to come out of this draft)
Kerry Meier (Even though he went to KU, I think he still transitions pretty well)
Selvish Capers (I have him rated in the late 3rd or early 4th, He is gonna make a Zone Blocking team very happy)
Clay Harbor (Watched this kid play several times and he is pretty good, he should be a good FB)
Mine
Brandon Graham- I know he is slated to go high, but I really think this guy can be the uber definition of superstar. Like 15 years from now when they are listing 10 greatest DE of all time, he will be on that list. So I thought it was appropriate to put him here.
Morgan Burnett- Could be the 2nd best safety in this whole class. I mean I think Berry will be a superstar, but Burnett I think will outshine everybody else.
Toby Gerhart- I don’t buy that white guys can’t be running backs. This man, if he stays healthy and goes to a run first team, will be compared to Jim Brown.
Mike Kafka- I think he will be the best QB in this draft class when people look back. It is gonna take him some time to crack a starting line up, but when he does I think he will be Mr. Clutch.

Wisco Players not getting enough attention
I think that there are going to be three NFL starters that come from Wisconsin.
No one talks about TE Garrett Graham enough. He’s a great all around tight end and the teams that passed on former Badger Owen Daniels will miss another great talent in Graham.

Although Daniels’ numbers are a bit more athletic, Graham is practically his clone and plays a very similar game. (Amazing, isn’t it? Being groomed in the same system and all…)
Another guy that I loved watching make plays week-in and week-out was S Chris Maragos. His defensive playmaking ability reminds me of a MORE athletic Jim Leonhard (handpicked to start at SS for the NY Jets by Rex Ryan when they left Baltimore).
Here’s the info I could find for Jim Leonhard:
5-09, 191
4.63 40YD
19 reps at 225#
Here’s the blurb on S Chris Maragos from NFL.com:
DB Chris Maragos (5-foot-10 1/2, 200 pounds) performed so well that he may just find himself getting drafted in the late rounds come April. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 and 4.47 seconds, had a 36-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot broad jump and did 15 repetitions in the bench press at 225 pounds.
Trust me, if the scouts watch football games, they probably knew this guy before his Pro Day.
The other Badgers prospect is DE O’Brien Schofield. All he did the past two seasons was give OTs nightmares. Not only was he adept at rushing the passer, but even in his lean frame, he was very stout against the run. He also played out of a two-point stance and dropped into coverage. If the Badgers D made a big stop, 6 times out of 10 it was Schofield. His motor is nuclear powered and his athleticism and character are off the charts. Unfortunately he tore is left ACL during Senior Bowl practice. Nevertheless, he will still be drafted and if he returns to form, he will be a force as a 3-4 rush linebacker.
Additional players that I think will be good are:
CB:
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (especially at KR/PR, but CB too; hope the Pack can get him in the 3rd)
AJ Jefferson
Amari Spievey
DE:
Jason Worlids (probably as a 3-4 OLB)
Clifton Geathers
Corey Wootton
DT:
Geno Atkins
Doug Worthington
LB:
Pat Angerer
Daryl Sharpton
Thaddeus Gibson
Ricky Sapp
Roderick Muckelroy
S:
Major Wright
Larry Asante
Myron Rolle (Personally, I hope that the Pack gets him in the 5th or 6th round.)
QB (all will need some grooming time, but will probably find their way to the field):
John Skelton
Dan LeFevour
Mike Kafka
Jevon Snead
Jarret Brown
Zac Robinson
RB:
Ben Tate
Anthony Dixon
LeGarrette Blount
Joe McKnight
Lonyae Miller
Stafon Johnson
WR:
Jordan Shipley
Riley Cooper
Emmanuel Sanders
Freddie Barnes
Blair White
Mardy Gilyard
TE:
Aaron Hernandez
Tony Moeaki
OT:
Jarred Veldheer
Sam Young
Special Teams:
Trindon Holliday
That’s all I can come up with right now. =P Please feel free to comment!
When I retire, I want to have Ted Thompson's job!
Oh yeah...
CB Dominique Franks will be one of the best values on Draft Day 2 late or early Day 3. He has all the skills you look for in an elite, shutdown CB in the NFL.
