2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft: Pick 43
The second round of the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft rolls along. We're having each SB Nation blogger make selections for their respective teams. Matty I, lead blogger at SB Nation's Miami Dolphins blog, The Phinsider, checks in to make the No. 43 overall selection in this year's mock. Take it away, sir!
With the No. 43 overall pick in the 2010 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins have selected Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech.
Matty I says:Yes I know - this is a risky pick and is not exactly the kind of pick this regime in Miami would make. But it's risky for reasons other than character. While Dez Bryant has off-field concerns, Demaryius Thomas has concerns on the field because of the college system he played in. And I'm aware that Thomas did not run a full route tree at Georgia Tech. I also know about his injured foot. But his injured foot will heal and you can teach a kid a route tree if he's a willing learner - and by all accounts, Thomas is a hard worker.
Here's what you can't teach a kid: how to be 6'3, 220 pounds and possess enough speed to run away from every defensive back in the ACC. No receiver has as much upside as Thomas in this draft. And because he came out of a run-heavy offense, he's a willing blocker who is actually effective - which this front office will love. In my opinion, there is no reason why Thomas can't become a true #1 receiver and the best receiver to come out of this draft. At pick #43, this is really a no-brainer for a team like this that desperately needs a play-maker at receiver.
Mocking Dan reacts: Although I have Damian Williams rated much higher, Thomas is a better fit for Miami. The Dolphins desperately need a wide receiver, but current wide receiver Brian Hartline is very similar in playing style to Williams. Thomas may be a huge risk, but he could be a star with the right coaching.
Mocking the Draft's Top 5 remaining prospects: 1 - Jonathan Dwyer/RB/Georgia Tech, 2 - Damian Williams/WR/USC, 3 - Rob Gronkowski/TE/Arizona, 4 - Brandon Spikes/LB/Florida, 5 - Chad Jones, S, LSU
Sound off, SB Nation! What say you of the Dolphins' selection of Robinson? Please be sure to check out The Phinsider for all of your Dolphins needs.

I like this pick.
Mainly because I’m a Patriots fan.
But also because Thomas is a great blocker- which is essential in the Dolphins’ run based offense. If he can learn how to run routes, he can be what Tedd Ginn never was- a down field threat that keeps the defenses honest.
Great fit for Miami, I hope if this is the actual pick that they can’t teach him how to run routes.
Scured?

Yeah...
…he seems like the perfect pick.
Georgia Tech basically ran the Dolphins offense, but with Pat White instead of Chad Henne.

I like this pick
to me it was either Thomas or LSU’s Brandon LaFell….Thomas is a bit more raw, but his upside is higher than LaFell.

I like Thomas
And considered him. He’s a great blocker that could help stretch the the running game outside….especially with the sound-blocking (but stone-handed) Michael Clayton on the other side.
Cannons... fire them.

I don’t remember what Miami went with their first pick, but I would have considered Spikes b/c they could use some help at ILB. However, Spikes is too much like Channing Crowder. both guys are the “thumper” 3-4 ILB that plays the run, and takes on blockers more. you want a guy who can play coverage well and is rangy. Crowder has average range and Spikes might be below average.

Thomas runs in a straight line
and blocks well.
Not exactly a bad thing and if that’s all you want from your WR…Thomas can be a good pick.
I think he’s got good potential cuz he’s raw buy a physical talent…but really, I think Damian Williams is too underrated at this point.
He’s a lot like another former USC WR, Steve Smith.
I’ve said I wish the Browns will take Demaryius Thomas, but the Dolphins are a great fit. A solid team that needs a spectacular playmaker and blocker, not to mention they have good coaching and Bill Parcells. I like this pick.

He’s raw but it does look like he’s willing to learn.
