NFL Draft Scouting Report Jared Veldheer
Jared Veldheer
6'8, 312 pounds / Offensive Tackle / Hillsdale
Strengths: He's got more than ideal size at 6'8, 312, one of the fastest players for his size with a 5.09 40 time, started 46 games for Hillsdale so he's got experience, extremely athletic especially for a player of his size, good upper body strength, held his own at Texas vs. Nation game when he faced NFL caliber players
Weakness: He has a short arm length at 33 inches, sounds dumb but long arms allow tackles to grab defender easier, raw technique that needs to be improved at the next level, doesn't always finish his blocks, played against I-AA competition so its hard to see how really dominant he was
Final Word: Veldheer is a bit of a risk even as low as the 2nd round. My main problem is that it seems he's only so high because of his workouts and I'm wary of players like these. He has the size, checks out physically, and played well against good competition, but the fact that he has never had game competition versus these guys worries me.

Yeah...
he is a project, no doubt. But, I really wouldn’t mind taking a flyer in the 2nd for him. Those physical attributes are rare and if he has what it takes between the ears to suceed then he could be a star. Classic boom, bust pick. He kind of reminds me of Sebastian Vollmer last year. Vollmer played in a weak 1-A conference and a lot of people were suprised the Pats took him in the 2nd round. It looks like that pick is going to pay off in New England. Like I said, it all comes down to intangibles for me.

Houston vs. Hillsdale is a pretty big difference.

I agree...
but it is a big difference. But, look at Joe Flaco. We dominated in 1-AA and he looks pretty damn good to me. The only NFL caliber DE that Vollmer went up against was Justin Rodgers of SMU who has bounced around teams since coming in as a 4th round pick and looks to be out of the league.
