Undrafted New York Jet feels misled by advisory board

For most juniors, it's not a gamble entering the NFL Draft a year early. The player generally gets a proper evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.

Still, there are some players that be drafted lower than they'd hope. Then there is a player like Kevin Basped who left Nevada a year early only to be undrafted.

These players usually don't say anything. Maybe they're too embarrassed about not being drafted.

Don Warren is not one of those people. He went undrafted last week after leaving Michigan a year early and signed with the Jets immediately after the draft. Speaking to reporters following New York, Warren was critical of the advisory board, which tells players where they should expect to be picked.

"I definitely felt [the advisory board misled him] because they told me I would be drafted -- and drafted pretty high," Warren said on Friday.  "It was definitely shocking and eye-opening when I didn't get drafted after that."

Warren said he was told by the advisory board that he'd be picked in the first three rounds of the draft.

It can be argued that Warren hurt himself greatly by running a 4.65 40-yard draft at the combine. But he's right in thinking that the advisory board should be giving players a more accurate indication of where they'll be drafted.

Warren is transitioning from college cornerback to NFL free safety, a move that suits his style and overall lack of athleticism. When and why he decided to go by "Don Warren" instead of "Donovan Warren" could become one of the great mysteries of our time.

I don't know why anyone thought he was going in the first three rounds

but I expected him to be drafted in the 4th or 5th. I’d like to know how often the advisory board is significantly off on their assessments.

Befroe the season he was condidered likely to go that high

even in January when he entered he was still considered at least a third rounder

Everson Griffen was projected to go a lot higher by a lot of people

so I guess he’s butt hurt too. Problem is there they pick who they pick, where the pick ’em. Seems to me this guy comes from the Deion Sanders/Mike Crabtree school of thought about his draft spot [or lack thereof] and — as with Mr. Crabtree — it equates to “tough shit”

He was always considered to be the second CB taken in the draft, but that was before the combine.

In essence he screwed himself up. By being so skinny he was wayyyy to underweight to be a safety, but too slow to be a CB. So no one wanted to take a chance on him because he didn’t have a position

Dudes name is Don

HAHA

It might be his name, or the fact that he ran slower than dirt

IMO

Since the NCAA is supposed to care about academics

They should let undrafted players return to school.

Seems like a smart idea to me

Of course they can already return to school, they just can’t play football there.

I think the only way he could have stayed being a corner

was in Indy’s old cover 2 scheme, when Dungy and Meeks were running it. He is very reminiscent to Marlin Jackson and in the old scheme all he would be asked to do is play short zones. Not the case anymore with Coyer at the helm

except that Marlin Jackson has almost 20 pounds on Warren. the only way you can compare them is lack of speed and the fact that they went to Michigan. Jackson is a very good run defender.

"free safety, a move that suits his style and overall lack of athleticism"

FS’s are actually very good overall athletes most of the time.
But I agree that there are “some players that be drafted lower”, lol.

I feel for the guy but the draft is a calculated risk for everyone involved, thats the very nature of it. No one can really predict how the teams will use thier picks, and if he’s that good he’ll get on anyway, as most teams have multiple undrafted free agents on them. Time to man up….no one is entitled, so go earn it now.

I'd like to know the whole "prediction" made by the board

Did they say, “you will go in 3 thru 5” or did they say, “we think that you could go as high as 3, probably 5, and maybe not drafted at all”?

I believe they tell them something like “We expect you to be drafted in the first three rounds.”

Typically, if I remember right, it goes like this:

- They tell a player if he’s being taken in the first round.
- They tell a player he’s being taken in the first two rounds.
- They tell a player he’s being taken in the first three rounds.
- They tell a player he’s being taken in the fourth round or later.

a recent article i read

indicated that he was under the impression he’d be drafted in the first 3 rounds

by georgiablue on May 4, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

and he was misled then. these people are entrusting a life changing decision to an advisory board. These people should advise better or be more accurate.

I also wonder where they had snead projected.
