2011 Draft Order and Big Board.
I just wanted to share a few notes before you get to the lists themselves. For the draft order, I relied almost exclusively on 2009 point differentials, deviating from that master list only to arrange the playoff slots properly. I realize that this results in basically the same order as that of the previous draft, but it's a good starting point. As for the big board, it was mostly distilled from the lists published by our very own Mocking Dan here at Mocking the Draft, Matt Millen of New Era Scouting and Tony Pauline over at SI. At this point in the process, I think that the wisdom of the masses is a good place to start with this.
I'm publishing this here now because I want you guys to pick through it for obvious mistakes and oversights, as well as potential errors in judgment and differing opinions. Let me get you started on all counts with some questions, OK? I know Andrew Luck is probably underrated at #25, but how high should I move him considering the rest of the list? Who else is significantly underrated or overrated? Are any of the names, positions or schools wrong? Have I left anyone crucial off the list entirely? What teams do you think are most likely to move into the top ten next year and which ones are most likely to break into the playoff slots? Everything is fair game, so have at it!

Not bad but
Ryan Williams is way too low. Hes better than Daniel Thomas, DeMarco Murray, and Evan Royster in my opinion.
By The Way?
You set his baseline at #37 in my list, but how high would you put him exactly?

Yeah, that was my first thought skimming through. That I’d rather have Ryan Williams than all three of Thomas, Murray and Royster on my team. I think all three of those seniors are overrated big time and need to play their way into the first couple rounds.
Running backs are one of the more fickle positions for the younger players as they often fall completely off the map, but going into the year, I think Williams as the 2nd best back and a first round prospect (with top 5-15 type potential) is a no-brainer.

Where would you slot him in amongst the guys I have up there? Thanks for bringing him to my attention, by the way!

Yeah That's Him!
He was a beast in his freshman season but unfortunately got a horrendous leg break in his bowl game.
I’m much higher on him than most other people because he has prototypical size and great game speed. I have him as a top 20 prospect in my rankings, posted them just before you.

If you want comments on the order, I would say the Raiders should be higher because they actually drafted well and have a real QB this year.
I think the Bills and Broncos are too high. Especially the Bills.

True.
I think Campbell is going to be huge for the Raiders. I also think the Bills are prime candidates for a Top 5 pick. As for the Broncos, I think they’re headed for a 9-7 season, give or take a game. We’re never going to see eye to eye on Denver, but at least we agree on the other two!

I Could See That
I know most people like Spiller more than I do, but that pick by Buffalo was confusing…

As a Bills fan, I don’t think the Bills are a real candidate for the first pick. Their defense will be too decent, they’ll run the ball too much, good special teams and I think the QB play will be mediocre enough to win more than a few games. They’re a top 7-8 lock that could easily pick in the top 3-4 though. I’d bet they end up around 4th to 5th in the draft.
Teams that end up with the first overall pick tend to have terrible defenses to go with really young QBs or awful backups after injury or depth chart shuffling. I don’t think Buffalo quite fits the profile like some other teams do.

If the Giants are healthy next year
they won’t be nearly that bad. They were annihilated last year with injuries and were still in contention for that final playoff spot.
You can’t predict health, but that’s why they were so bad. That, and a defensive coordinator that couldn’t put his socks on in the morning.
Everyone should be healthy (including Kenny Phillips) and Perry Fewell the new DC actually likes football….so I really doubt they’re that bad again.
Playoffs?
Do you think they make the playoffs, assuming equal health for everyone (since it can’t be predicted)?
MileHighReport.com member since 02/06/07, promoted to "Position Coach" (i.e. new staff writer) on 02/16/10!
yes.
absolutely.
The Giants have Kenny Phillips in the lineup last year and a whole Justin Tuck (instead of 1/2 a Tuck) they make the playoffs.
A Brandon Jacobs sans torn MCL since week 1 would help as well.
Interesting.
I still think the Cowboys are the class of that division and the Redskins are still at the bottom for me, but I can’t shake my like of the Eagles to put the Giants at #2…

Aging D
No QB, and if you get one back he’ll have to shake off rust and boos. bad OL, Ward is only WR (and at his age how effective will he be?), dont see Wallace outside great slot WR though.
The worst thing tho will be chemistry. If Tomlin can keep that team together Id giv him coach of the year, but for me this is a lock for a team being a sinking ship. Even if they dont get a top 10 pick I doubt they’ll b at 19, I see them as top 15 at best, especially with the Bengals and Ravens getting much better while they clearly are getting worse on talent and chem.
Chemistry is far underrated in the NFL, and the Steelers will need it to have even a decent year IMO
Again, this is just my opinion and if im wrong ill come back and eat crow, but for now Im gonna stick by it
Okay but
Don’t be so suprised when when we make the playoffs. If the Bears can get to the SB with Grossman we can get to the playoffs with Dixon/Leftwich.
I'm getting tired of saying this: Dick LeBeau’s system is so complex very few rookies can make an impact.
We just dumped a problem WR just so we could draft another?
4-6 weeks with Dixon or Leftwich?
yes. A whole season? no

I think Dixon is a well-placed suspension
or an injury away from taking the NFL by storm. Bring on the spread. It’s time.
So I guess every team with QB better or similar to Grossman will make it to the playoffs.

Which team on the list
That’s below the Niners do you think is better? The Giants possibly or the Titans, but I don’t see anyone else. Keep in mind that the fact that someone has to win the NFC West means the Niners and Cardinals (and Seahawks?) should probably get an artificial boost when projecting draft order.

I agree on the Titans, but not so much the Redskins (who are in their first year of a HUGE transition and still play in a tough division). I’m with you on the Chargers, but not the Niners (they’re up and comers) not the Steelers (they’re still plenty good for .500 without Big Ben). Thanks for the multiple suggestions!

Shanny+McNabb+good D= Good team
I think the Steelers will hav a tough time running the ball with no true WR threat, no QB for 6 games, and bad OL. There D will still be good, but with that age I doubt there good enough to save this sinking ship. Plus, we saw how bad there secondary was last yr, and they did nothing for S or CB
9ers i still dont like their O. They dont really have a great back, as Gore is just a pounder and they just got another pounder (Dixon), they dont really have a guy to go outside the tackles. Couple that with Smith at QB and they dont hav an O to take em far.
We Did nothing for S or CB?
How about getting back the best safety in the game! How about adding a good starting cornerback in McFadden who already knows the system and has had success. Add into that a healthy Keenan Lewis and an improving Joe Burnett and that leaves us with: a # 1 CB, 2 #2CB’s (McFadden and Lewis) and 2 #3 CB’s (Gay and Burnett) add to that Ryan Clark and an ever improving Ryan Mundy and we have a good set of DB’s.
Our running game is still good, in 2009, with a guy essentially in his rookie year (Mendenhall broke his shoulder in week 4 of his rookie season) and in 12 starts he gained 1166 yards, add into that a young line getting more experience, a rookie stud at RG and a better compliment to him than anything we had last year, the running game should be back to its best.
We have a decent WR corps, Hines Ward is not showing any signs of ageing, he just had his best statistical season ever and is still playing really well, We have a 2nd year player who will likely improve on his great rookie season, and we added a veteran who has had success in the system, add to that the 2 rookies we have who will likely get some playing time, and of course Heath Miller then the receiving corps should be fine.
The main question is at QB, can Ben bring himself back to his usual standard or will he be slow to come back? Can Dennis Dixon build on an impressive performance against the Ravens last year and be a decent starter in the wake of Ben’s suspension.
The Steelers went 15-1 in 2004 with NO quarterback play and a similar standard of supporting cast, they should at least be able to break 500 in 2010.

I will give you that Polamalu will help
But your CB situation is far from settled, especially with both BAL and CIN bolstering their WR corps.
We can go back and forth till were blue in the face. But Im letting u no right now the Steelers are not going to be picking that low on draft day. If Im wrong, I assure u i will admit it and eat crow. I hope u do the same
Of Course I will
but why are the CB corps any worse that they were when we had the best defense for 20 years in 08? Exactly the same starters but with 2 young guys pushing them for playing time. If you were to say we have a problem at WR I might agree more.

Redskins and Steelers
I think Campbell has been underrated and don’t think McNabb will be THAT much of an upgrade at QB. I also think the transition to the 3-4 changes everything about that D. Moreover, it’ll likely take some time to transition under Shanny.
As for the Steelers, I expect Wallace to step into Santonio’s role relatively well. That they won’t have Big Ben for six games is why I’m not thinking of them as a playoff team.
The Niners have Crabtree and Davis in the air and a whole stable of impressive enough RBs; I like their offense and team in general enough to challenge in the West.
MileHighReport.com member since 02/06/07, promoted to "Position Coach" (i.e. new staff writer) on 02/16/10!
I think Campbell is way overrated since he got to OAK
They vastly improved their QB spot with a QB who has played at a pro bowl level with no WRs. Yes, I dont agree with the 3-4 change, but Orakpo should help smooth transition and a good pass rusher always helps a D.
Wallace will definitly need to step up we both agree, but Im not sure if he can handle the press
Niners I think they could do well if the NFC West gets worse, but from a talent prospective I have trouble saying they are top 12
Good Stuff
I’ll definite take your points into consideration as we move forward in the offseason and I publish another one of these posts to keep us busy; thanks for chiming in!

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Really?
They were in the playoffs last year and l don’t see why they’d be worse. They had the best point differential among AFC teams last year. They’ve been infusing good youth. Maybe the SB is too far, but they’ll be in the mix. I actually like your Ravens as an SB contender…

Jaguars 8th, come onnn
I’d think 15-24
"HULU: An evil plot to destroy the world. Enjoy"
Real fans don’t need a reason.
I didn't want to be the one to say it
Because almost everyone who complains about the order says that their favorite team is too low in the order. But usually the teams that regress the most are the ones that are older and/or lost players. The Jaguars are neither of those. When a team has around 10 rookies on their team who all have significant roles on the team, they’re usually in line to improve, not regress.
Regardless, it doesn’t make a difference what any of us say because none of us really know.
Follow me on Twitter
I’d Say the fallacy of the Jaguars is that they play in a tough division. 8 seems like a decent spot to me. I don’t think David Garrard at QB and the young defence trumps either the Colts of the Texans, maybe the Titans but Garrard/ MJD does not do it for me when the Titans have VYoung/CJ. Either way if I were a Jags fan, Id be thrilled to pick in the top half cause you wont be winning a super bowl this coming year and with an expected rookie wage scale you could secure one of Locker/Mallet/Luck for a decent prince until they prove themselves. Sorry to bash the Jags but I just don’t see the talent to jump in their division.
Fair Points
I think Jacksonville should be better than they were last year, but consider that 8th from the bottom is where they were last year in point differential.

15-24?
Might as well have just thrown the whole kitchen sink and say 1-32 lol. And sorry I think that prediciton, albeit broad, is a little hopeful IMO. The AFC South is a great div, and I think they will finally overthrow the overrated NFC East as the best div. With that said I see the Jags havin no chance to compete against them, and think a 2-4 record in the div is the most optimistic record i can give them, and quite frankly find it to be a stretch. When a team cant play well against its division, it picks top 15, and more likely, the dreaded top 10.
Teams that come to mind for this are=Bills, KC, Lions, Browns, Redskins
The Cowboys, Giants, and Eagles are all good enough to win a SB
The Skins with Mcnabb could make the playoffs. That’s why it’s the best Div. Jags might not make the Playoffs

Lets not hate
boys Detroit won’t pick in the top 10 and i believe they got a stronger schedule then both the Giants and Jets, Suh is going to be in the back field like Greene and Jacobs. Go Detroit!!!
not hating...
just reality.
The Jags picked at #10 overall at 7-9 last year.
Suh is a rookie.

Time will tell
Schwartz is a defensive genious and the weapons he added on both sides of the ball are sick he took the leagues worst D and did a remarkable turn around. The Oline is my biggest worry but Best, Burelson and Scheffler will make them look beeter than they really are, only time will tell and until i’m proven wrong i’m saying top 10 is in are rear view mirror.
I don't know how Smitty feels, but
as another Lions fan, I’m going with 6-10. Yes, we still will be picking in the top ten, but we’re one of the most improved teams this offseason, and I don’t see any possible way that we will do badly enough to pick second overall. Our secondary is horrible, but besides that we actually have a solid team(on paper, at least).
I fail to see
How Nate Burleson is “sick” and same with Corey Williams, KVB, and Scheffler. Granted, they are improvements, but to say sick? C’mon be real they are getting better but they are not near 500 just yet. I would pencil them in for that in 2011, if there is a season then.
Next to Calvin
Burleson could be sick. And Corey Williams was the BEST DT in the NFL his last 2 years in a 4-3 defense. If he can get back to anywhere near that production, he’ll be a pro-bowler. And don’t hate on Scheffler just because you’re disgruntled about him. He is a top 5 receiving TE. Granted, he’s not the greatest blocker, but that’s what Pettigrew is for.
Really?
Please, feel free to correct on a team and players you know nothing about.

Ok
Burleson isnt going to be sick with the Lions. He may be good but not sick. Corey Williams was NOT the best DT when he was in a 43. Your delusional if you think that. And Scheffler is NO WAY in hell is a top 5 receiving TE.
LOL delusional?
In 2006 and 2007 he had more tackles and more sacks than any other DT in the NFL. And Burleson has never played with a true #1 receiver, which he now has in Calvin Johnson. The Scheffler thing is arguable, I’ll give you that. The thing is, he never played in a system that was TE friendly and he still had over 500 yards every year. And last year he was benched a lot because McDaniels plays favorites and doesn’t use TE’s at all. TE’s are hard to judge because not all offenses use them equally. Hell some offenses avoid them as receiving threats all together, while some rely heavily on the mismatches they can create. I’m just guessing you haven’t really watched Scheffler run and catch. He is fast, big, and has great hands. Just ask Broncos fans how valuable he is as a receiving threat across the middle and in the endzone. In Linehan’s system, which uses TE’s a lot, he will have a breakout year.

LOL.
That’s fine, you can either go off statistics or opinion, and I can see you like to use your own opinions rather than statistical facts. I wasn’t trying to change your mind, I don’t care what you think about the Lions or their player, I was just supporting my claim. Just like I can statistically show you that the Yankees made a mistake by trading Austin Jackson to the Tigers for an underachieving Granderson. But you would probably never believe me.

LOL
Those werent my personal opinions those were reality. Have fun with both the Lions and Tigers missing the playoffs this year.
Wait, I forget, who just took 3 out of 4? The Tigers or Yankers? Oh that’s right, Tigers, because the Yankees can’t hit good pitching. It must suck seeing all that money being spent, and they still can’t score a fucking run on the Tigers in 2 of those games. But then again I’m sure you don’t even know what I’m talking about because you’re a bandwagon Yankees fan just so you can say hey I’m a fan of a good team, look at me.
I actually somewhat respected your opinions
until those last two posts. You honestly sound like 12 year old scorned in those. Just give up before I make you look stupid.
I don't have to try little girl,
you did a good enough job on your own. You haven’t said one relevant thing this entire time. You can think you’re not, but you’re an idiot. But you are the all knowing sports guy, so from now on I’ll ask what your opinion is on something since everything you say or think is a stone cold fact.
LOL
You like the Yankees, Lakers, and Packers. No wonder you don’t know much about sports. You are the epitome of a bandwagon fan.
I don't have to think that,
it’s the truth. You root for the teams that get talked about the most on ESPN. You fit in good with bandwagon fans though, because they are too weak and don’t have the moxie to stick with a team through bad times.
Now go ahead and hurl some childish insult at me and tell me how dumb I am, or make fun of the Lions for being bad. I don’t care what you think, you’re a bandwagon fan, and real fans will NEVER respect you. Go to some other site and state your baseless opinions that you can never back up with any kind of proof or stats.
Now go ahead and hurl some childish insult at me and tell me how dumb I am
That actually describes exactly what you are doing.

Scheffler was benched because he didn't care about winning and getting into the playoffs.
He’s a loser. Literally.
He could be a legit top-5 TE, if he wanted. But he’s injured for half the year every season and doesn’t have a team-first mentality. And he’s a down-the-seams TE, doesn’t really know how to do much else; neither could he grasp the play book last year – an example is the Baltimore game when Orton pointed out the “Mike” and he went into motion. Orton’s subsequent wave wasn’t so much friendly as “WTF?! Get back to your spot!” Which he did. He had no idea what he was doing out there.

Adrian Clayborn should be in the top 5.
He’s far and away the best d-lineman in the draft next year.
Far and away the best D lineman in next years draft?
No way. Quinn, Dareus, Heyward and maybe Bailey are all better
No.
Maybe Quinn, I’ll give you that. But you seriously must not even know who Clayborn is.
63 tackles and 11sacks last season and he’s 6’-3" 280lbs. and plays in an NFL defense at Iowa. Guess who had better stats than that of the guys you named. NONE of them
How do you figure.
Because you say so? Derrick Morgan wasn’t even as good as Clayborn last year, and he was a first round pick.

I can respect your opinion,
but in my opinion and a lot of experts opinions he is the best or second best (behind only Quinn) in the nation. The thing about it is, there wasn’t one single player, besides Suh, who could single handedly control an entire game with his play. If you watched the Orange Bowl game, he dominated that game, and dominated isn’t even a strong enough word to describe his play. That is why he won the Orange Bowl MVP award. Unless he has an injury or character issues arise, he will be a top 15 pick.

From what I've seen
experts have said he is the best senior. But if you include underclassmen he is behind Quinn, Dareus and even Bowers on some occasions
Well
there is a whole entire year left to play. It doesn’t matter what you, me, or the so called experts say right now. it all depends on how all of these players perform on and off the field next season. Just like Bryant should have been a top 5 pick, but his season was ruined. That could happen to anyone. Any one of those guys could end up being a player that plays their way out of the first or second round.

I wouldn't
Consider TCU or West Virginia to run an NFL style defense. So yeah, there is a such thing as a non-NFL defense.

For a D-linan it doesn’t matter. All that would
matter is 43 vs 34

are you seriously leaving christian ponder off this list? he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, top 5 if not top 3. his name will be in the heisman conversation and he’ll be invited to NYC.
27) Rahim Moore, S, UC – Los Angeles
Do people actually call it UC Los Angeles? I thought UCLA was pretty universal.
Other than the RBs, I think the only things that are pretty far off are Jerrell Powe being down towards 50. Being the best NT gets him into the first round all by itself and I think he’s a better NT prospect than any of the top NTs from last year. Top 25 guy for me.
The other one is Collin Kaepernick. I think he has a complete lack of touch and accuracy, especially touch. Everything is a fastball. I don’t even think he’s an NFL QB. I think he’ll end up at WR or back in baseball. I think he’s a mid round prospect at WR if he runs well and a late round QB prospect unless he makes massive strides in accuracy and feel for passing. The way I would describe him is the same way that people talk about certain pitching prospects; He’s more of a thrower than a passer.
I signed up for Second Life about a year ago. Back then my life was so great that I literally wanted a second one. In my Second Life I was also a paper salesman and I was also named Dwight. Absolutely everything was the same. Except I could fly. - Dwight Schrute
Kaepernick also has a funky release.
