The inevitability of homeristic tendencies
This was bound to happen.
When you ask your readers to weigh in on the worst team in the NFL for the upcoming season, some feathers are bound to get ruffled.
However, I never expected that ruffling to lead to almost 400 comments. It all started out fine and achieving the goal I wanted (to intelligently discuss why another team is worse than another).
The thread is a prime example of why a blogging platform based solely on fan opinion is great (and terrible).
As stated, the idea behind the post was simply to determine a ranking of the worst teams in the NFL this season to make a mock draft. Truth be told, it was sort of a success.
Based on the voting, which I didn't partake, the first three picks in the draft order should be Buffalo, St. Louis and Cleveland.
After that, the whole thing went to hell becoming a slap fight between tunnel vision fans. Why is my team even mentioned? My team is better than your team. Your team is the joke of the league. My team can do no wrong, ever.
The hope when I took over Mocking the Draft is that the site would be a little different from the other SB Nation sites. What we're fans of here is the NFL Draft. An event, not a team. So the idea in my head is that MTD shoulbd be an unbiased site where people can intelligently discuss football.
It's apparent that's not always the case.

I liked the idea actually
However I do not think it is possible to do something along those lines this early. After a few games people should settle down some and then they will get excited for the upcoming draft.

This is an excellent point
It would be difficult to, as a fan, concede that your team will be one of the worst before the season starts. Even bad teams try and build upon thier foundation and have hope that something is going right (unless you were a Raiders fan a year ago). To throw something like that out there at that point of the year, no way was it getting by without a fight. Wait until week 4 and the team is winless, then they will start conceeding defeat.
It’s apparent that’s not always the case.
Quoted for inaccurate, it’s apparent that such a thing is just too rare. We’re fans and it’s incredibly hard to think outside our respective fandom. Some can do it, the vast majority just can’t.
Kudos to those that can, the few of you…

I Feel Your Pain...
I am an unabashed Broncos fan, but I try to remain as objective as possible and keep my discussion of their future prospects civil. Amidst last offseason’s tulmultous offseason, I stood firm in my belief that Denver would remain an 8-8 team (give or take a game) and did my best to communicate my reasons for that. It was incredibly frustrating to encounter such stubborn opposition. After that experience, I’ve decided to take on a different tact: opting to arrange a set of friendly wagers on Denver’s win total and letting the discussion end there for the most part. It’s impossible to win a debate about what boil down to mere opinions at this point in the year. People would be best off agreeing to disagree on some things, at least for now, and saving their ammo for later.
As for Mocking The Draft, I fear your dream might be misguided. Almost everyone that follows the draft is an avid fan of a particular team, be it in the pro or college ranks, and usually both. That fandom will always be greater than their interest in the draft. In fact, that single event is like the moon to the individual fandom’s sun: it shines with borrowed light. As for the level of decorum on the site, that’s up to the rules to establish. Enforcing a higher standard of civility and enforcing it would be necessary. Fans, especially on the Internet, are unlikely to be well-behaved always. It’s a shame and I feel your pain, but it is what it is…

In regard to your second graf, I know you’re right. It’s just bothersome that people get so blinded by their personal interest. I guess I don’t get it for two reasons: I’m a journalist, so I’ve trained myself to have little emotion about things that have a news hook. Second, I like the Browns, so I know hope is useless.
I didn’t dislike the decorum of the discourse. Let me be clear with that. People weren’t being assholes, which is about all I really ask. I just don’t understand the point of going and going and going.

To answer the question most honestly
I agree with that poll. I do believe that is the correct order as well. Even though Cleveland won there last 4 games, the teams they beat were far from stellar and now they go into the season with Jake Delhomme as their starter. However, I still think they are better than both the rams and bills.
Dude that is what being a fan is all about
it’s nothing to look down your nose at. It is what it is.

I think I know exactly who this comment was pointed at. I’ve seen homers, but man, on that thread it was absolutely amazing some of the justifications. I know the Eagles are a wild card and could be awesome, but I can also admit that things could go terribly wrong. I guess I was more blinded by optimism in HS and college, when thought I knew a lot but hadn’t had much experience with my knowledge yet.
