Tale of the Tape: Nevada DE Dontay Moch

Dontay_moch_mediumDontay Moch first caught the attention of the online draft community when reports emerged of his blazing 4.25 40. However, the Nevada DE's long been a known entity to fans of the WAC, as well as opposing teams’ offensive coordinators.

Over the last two years, Moch has notched 18 sacks and an eye-popping 37 tackles for loss. His sack numbers dropped in ‘09, but that was in part due to Dontay frequently facing double teams. And when I watched him against some of the better competition he faced last year - Notre Dame, Missouri, Boise State, and SMU - he was relentlessly disruptive.

Moch’s 4.25 40 almost seems too amazing to be accurate, and to a certain extent that's true.

Star-divide

As TFY Draft's Tony Pauline noted in his excellent podcast, Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick surprisingly timed in the 4.4s on the same surface that Moch ran his 40. Both players probably benefited from running on a very fast track. In fact, it's likely that Moch’s 40 time in Indy will end up being closer to Kaepernick’s than his own 4.25.

However, Moch does showcase tremendous playing speed. The explosive edge rusher can run the arc around offensive tackles, as he often did against Notre Dame’s Sam Young. And Moch isn’t a one trick pony: he’ll also surge past a tackle’s inside shoulder, and his speed is deadly when he executes a stunt. If a lineman doesn’t quickly get his gloves on him, there’s a very good chance that Dontay’s getting to the QB.

One area where Moch needs to show improvement is at using his hands effectively. Moch’s speed can be neutralized when he doesn’t quickly dispatch blockers. At 6’1", 238 lbs., he’s at a natural size/length disadvantage, so it’s important that he improve his strength and do everything he can to perfect his hand play.

Moch’s lack of ideal size stands out even more in the run game. He’s often engulfed by right tackles, even the occasional tight end. When he gets proper extension, Moch does flash good strength: on one play, he brought Sam Young to his knees. But Moch more often gets plowed back, like when he lost contain early in the bowl game against SMU, leading to a TD.

Because of his limitations as a run-defending 4-3 defensive end, Moch likely will have to make the transition to 3-4 outside linebacker. He only rushed with his hand up and dropped into coverage a couple times in the games I watched, but he looked very comfortable doing both. On one play, he dropped into coverage and quickly sniffed out a screen; though he didn’t make the tackle, he managed to slow down the action and prevent a bigger play.

Overall, Moch’s size and athletic ability remind me of Aaron Curry’s great size/speed combo. Had Curry played defensive end in college, he probably would have ended up looking a lot like Moch. The Wake Forest product posseses a little more bulk and has more fluid hips, but Moch’s not enough of an athletic downgrade to think he can’t become an effective LB.

That said, Moch’s never going to be a big edge-setting OLB, so some of the traditional two gap 3-4 teams may show less interest. But if Moch keeps up his production this fall, he’ll be very appealing to attacking 3-4 squads: teams like the Jets, Ravens, Cowboys, and Steelers. And if Moch kills at the Combine, he could lock himself in as a 2011 1st round pick.

Here's a clip of Moch wreaking havoc against Missouri. Hopefully, he'll continue to do the same this fall and bring his best game to the NFL.

Sorry, but anyone could beat Sam Young. He was awful

Fortunately, Moch also has played well against guys not named Sam Young. But despite it being a lopsided loss for Nevada, Moch may have had more success beating Young on passing downs than Brandon Graham did.

I thought Graham matched up against Duncan?

Graham spent a good deal of the game matching up against Duncan, but he did oscillate between the two DE spots.

Young definitely had his bad spots: as I recall, he was forced into an obvious holding penalty when Graham beat him with him an inside move, and he gave up an additional one or two pressures. But on several plays, he managed to use his length advantage to keep Graham at bay.

I wasn’t at all high on Young as a draft prospect, but he did a fairly decent job vs. Michigan. He also showed some nastiness in the run game, at one point drawing a flag for some activity after the whistle.

He's only 238, and appears to be very athletic

Is it possible he could be a 4-3 OLB in the NFL, similar to Orakpo his rookie year?

And as an ND fan, Sam Young is terrible, and whats worse is he was an UDFA to the Broncos, so Im going to have to watch and hear from more of him.

I believe Sam Young was drafted by the Cowboys in the 6th round. It’s pretty amazing how far Young’s fallen: in his pre-season mock, Todd McShay had the Notre Dame offensive tackle projected as a top fifteen pick. Also, he was a prized recruit coming out of high school.

In The New Gold Standard, Tim Prister heaps praise on Charlie Weis for reeling in Young, one of his top recruiting targets. He casually mentions the other one, a defensive tackle named Gerald McCoy. Had it been the other way around, Weis might still be in South Bend.

As for Moch playing 4-3 OLB: it’s hard to say, given that we haven’t seen him play all that much in space. And even a guy like Brian Orakpo looked less than 100% comfortable in that role; 3-4 OLB should be a better fit for both guys.

Your right, Im an idiot

Paul Duncan went to Denver. Sorry I have trouble keeping track of sub-par Golden Domers under Weis ;) Honestly as an ND fan I will admit Golden Domers always get overhyped, just look at Clausen for instance. Some people honestly thought he was a 1st overall pick!!!!

And back to Moch, OK. I’ll admit I didnt see much of Orakpo at 4-3 OLB but I did hear he did OK at best there and was best when used as a hand in the dirt rusher in nickel schemes. I only asked about Moch because he’s even lighter than Orakpo was.

Sam Young was picked in the 6th round by the Cowboys

I would agree with this

He could certainly transition to 43 OLB or least be asked to try. At that size he would run the risk of becoming completely engulfed as a 34 OLB in any scheme

IMO

He isn’t THAT bad against the run. By switching him to a 43 OLB you might take away his best attribute; pass rushing.

You could play him at 4-3 OLB, then move him down to defensive end on passing down. Some teams, like the Redskins, have been able to get their LBs a lot of blitzing/rushing opportunities. Before Orakpo, Marcus Washington used to give the Redskins about six sacks a year.

Ideally, Moch should play 3-4 OLB, but he could prove to be fluid enough for 4-3 OLB. Unfortunately, there’s not enough on tape thus far to say yes or no.

by Alo on Jul 3, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

No I guess he isnt that bad against the run

But a guy his size playing along the line of scrimmage in the pros cant be a good thing. I mean even the small OLBs that play in 34s are around 260 pounds. LIke Alo mentioned the traditional common two gap schemes like guys starting around 6’3" 270. I mean you probably would be very hard pressed to find a 34 OLB under 250 unless they are a versatile backup type special teams player

IMO

small 3-4 OLBs are about 245-250

Yeah and most are backups

Special team playing versatile guys, some expected to play inside as well

Also, You said he could bea first rounder?

I admit I only watched the one highlight tape, but in that tape I saw no pass rush moves: no clubs, rips, swims, nothing. I think everyone learned their lesson with Gaines Adams, drafting athletic DE’s with no moves. NFL OT’s will watch the film on this guy and will make their kick back steps longer to counter this guy.

With that said, I look forward to seeing this guy in 2010 and to see if he has developed into a better pass rusher

by DBroncs1414 on Jul 2, 2010 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Moch definitely has some work to do, but I think there’s a good chance he’ll end up getting taken in the first frame. Even if he doesn’t make great strides, his impressive feats at the Combine could artificially inflate his stock.

by Alo on Jul 2, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea

the combine does wonders for that. Also will be interested to see if and how well he performs at the Senior Bowl. I doubt he’ll see better OT’s at Nevada than what he will face there. I’m curious to see how well he’ll adjust to the increase of competition.

And if a pass rusher runs a 4.25, or even if thats a lie and he runs a 4.4-4.5, teams desperate for a premier pass rusher will probably drool at the mouth. There’s no doubting he has amazing potential but as of now I have trouble justifying him being a top pick, but who knows the guy hasnt even played his Senior season yet

By the way Alo, keep this up

Its hard to find news and in-depth scouting reports on 2011 NFL draft prospects now, especially with ones where the scout provides interaction. I’ll be sure to check out MTD for more of your work

Thanks, DBroncs.

I should have another one on Dont’a Hightower up in the next few days.
