Unga, Price taken in seventh round of 2010 NFL Supplemental Draft
It looked like the 2010 NFL Supplemental Draft would go with no players being taken this year.
But in the seventh round, the Chicago Bears took BYU running back Harvey Unga and the Dallas Cowboys selected Illionois defensive tackle Josh Price-Brent.
Both teams will give up their seventh-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Unga was unquestionably this year's top player in the draft. Too slow to be a featured back and not a natural as a fullback, it looks like Unga was merely a man without a position who teams wouldn't take the chance on. A lingering ankle issue also didn't help.
Price should slide to end in the Dallas 3-4 defense. He started 12 games for Illinois last season, but he certainly isn't the next Ndamukong Suh. Simply put, he's just a big body along the defensive line.
It was unlikely that Truman State all-everything offensive player Vaness Emokpae or former Nebraska running back Quentin Castille would get drafted and now they face free agency.
There was some talk leading up to the draft that Unga and Brent could be taken in the third round, but that clearly turned out to be false. Pundits typically overvalue a supplemental draft player's worth because there's nothing else going on in the NFL world right now. It's that extremely dead period of the year between mini and training camp when only mid- to late-round draft picks are signing.
To be fair, I am no different. I figured Unga would be drafted in the sixth round and Brent the seventh.
Even though Unga and Price were drafted, all four players now face an uphill struggle to make an NFL roster with teams already getting a solid look at what they have in minicamp. For these players, maybe they should have considered doing what former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli did and play at a lower division of college football.
For most fans, the 2010 NFL Supplemental Draft was much ado about nothing.
