Cleveland Browns team needs

The Browns added a lot of pieces to their roster this offseason, particularly in the defensive backfield. The additions of Sheldon Brown and Joe Haden at cornerback should shore up the pass defense. But the team needs help in the front seven.

The offense is also in need of some playmakers in the passing game. With that in mind, here's a look at the positions the Browns may have to fill following this season.

- Wide receiver: The Browns have several decent wide receiver options in Mohamed Massaquoi, Chansi Stuckey, Brian Robiskie and rookie Carlton Mitchell. But none are true No. 1 options. With so many top receivers likely to be in the next draft, the time is now for Cleveland to go after a good one.

Star-divide

- Defensive end: The team finished 29th in rush defense last season and the line doesn't look much better going into this season. There is talk of Shaun Rogers moving over to end and Ahtyba Rubin handling the nose full time. But even in that scenario, the Browns have average players up front. They include Kenyon Coleman, Robaire Smith, C.J. Mosley and rookie Clifton Geathers. None really scream top starter, let alone playmaker.

- Outside linebacker: Matt Roth wanted out and begrudgingly signed a one-year restricted free agent tender. While Roth has shown some potential, he's not the kind of outside linebacker a team should be hoping wants to stay. A more athletic playmaker at linebacker would greatly improve the 3-4 defense.

- Tight end: If Colt McCoy ends up being the team's quarterback following the 2010 season, a good tight end will greatly help his development. Current tight ends Ben Watson, Evan Moore and Robert Royal profile more as backups. Moore has the most potential of the three, but he really only had one good game last season.

I'm interested to see these young WR's

They all have good potential, and they have a seasoned vet throwing to them (albeit, inconsistent). Also I like Ben Watson a bit more than you do, I think he just wasn’t given a lot of throws in NE, just like all their TE’s.

With that said though, Cleveland lacks talent all around their roster and it hurts them even more to play in the AFC North now. Truly, this team will be drafting top 5 unless Delhomme plays like his 04 self, which going by the past couple years, doesn’t seem likely.

I don’t think the FO sees McCoy as the future of the franchise. I think they would have drafted him earlier in that case. But WR is a HUGE need for us because non of the WR’s have any elite qualities to them. I would also but Oline as a need because Hadnot was a good guard last year and we lost him. That means other than Thomas and Mack the rest of the line is barely starting material.

Steinbach was the worst starting Guard in the league last year according to PFF

Steinbach struggled badly early on but played pretty well down the stretch. As a result, it’s hard to tell how good he’ll be this fall, though he probably won’t play up to his $5.75M base salary.

According to Rotoworld, Steinbach’s set to make $6M in 2011. My guess is he won’t see that money, with either Shawn Lauvao or a new addition taking over at left guard.

Everyone played well down the stretch; against teams in the bottom of the league who cared more about draft position than winning.

I would bet that if the FO was high on Luck, Locker, Mallet, or one of the other QBs in the first round they would take them, but I doubt they would take a QB outside of the first couple rounds.

WR is a big need and its a great year to address it.

TE seems fine because Watson is a good blocker and ok at catching and Moore is a threat in the receiving game.

They might need an RT as well.

On his radio show last fall, Holmgren raved about Locker’s play in the USC game.
