NFC South: Regular and Postseason Predictions
The season is drawing near, so naturally it is time to look ahead to the playoffs. No? This eight-part series takes a look at each division and discusses the outlook for every team in the NFL — in both the regular season and playoffs.
TEAM: Saints
RECORD: 13-3 ; Win the Division
REASON: Drew Brees is one of the top quarterbacks in the league and plays with a bounty of offensive weapons. The Saints also have a very good defense, though it is unlikely that they will generate as many turnovers this year. Absent the huge turnover ratio from 2009, they will be unlikely to achieve the same success. They should still boast a good record and win their division.
TEAM: Falcons
RECORD: 12-4 ; Win the Wild Card
REASON: The Falcons are a solid football team. The offensive potential of players like Michael Turner, Tony Gonzalez, Roddy White, and Matt Ryan should help them win a lot of games this season. The Falcons also have strong offensive and defensive lines, which will be key in helping them push their way back to the playoffs. Defensively, they have a very strong linebacker corps. The Falcons’ best linebacker is Curtis Lofton, a versatile three-down players who captains the defense, is respected in the locker room, and stays out of trouble off the field. This year, the Falcons are depending on defensive end Kroy Biermann to have a break out year.
TEAM: Panthers
RECORD: 6-10 ; No Playoffs
REASON: The Panthers have not had a losing record since John Fox was hired as the head coach. This year, they are in a division with the Saints and Falcons, and have a difficult non-division schedule. The Panthers have a competent quarterback, good running backs, and pretty good lines — but they also have young receivers and a shaky secondary that needs to get better. The question-marks for this team are colliding with a schedule that makes it unlikely for their streak of winning seasons to continue.
TEAM: Buccaneers
RECORD: 2-14 ; No playoffs
REASON: Quarterback Josh Freeman shows a lot of potential and will step up this year as the clear starter in Tampa Bay — with a promising future. The Bucs running game has potential but the offensive line needs work and could hinder the ground game, especially early on. Buccaneers ownership cut all veterans over the last two years to start over, and that is exactly where Tampa Bay is at this point. They should be able to pull out a couple of wins this season as Freeman builds a rapport with rookie receiver Mike Williams, and veterans Maurice Stovall and Reggie Brown.

I agree with the finishing order
But I think this conference will be tighter like 4-5 games between Saints and Bucs tops.
Saints had a lucky year in 2009
They won’t be as driven, they won’t get as many takeaways, they won’t win the division and will be around .500
I think it’s the Falcon’s year.

panthers schedule is a lot easier than you think
they’ll reach 8 wins but the order is understandable…
of course, the NFC South flips practically every year so the Saints might drop out of the top spot… I’d say, taking that fact into account, and the Madden curse, the Saints lose Drew Brees to injury and the Falcons/Panthers grab the top spot
This division is always crazy
the Saints basically have not a single thing about them that tells you they’d fall off…but I bet they do. There’s no basis for it, but Brees is on the madden cover and that thing is basically 100% year to year on the team that guy plays on taking a dump during the season.
The Falcons defense still ain’t gonna allow them to go 12-4. They have a talented offense of course, so I do think they get in 2nd place..probably 10-6 at best and probably a playoff spot.
I think you’re underrating the Panthers drastically. No Delhomme means they won’t be as bad..plain and simple.
I think the Panthers win this division, Falcons in 2nd and the Champs turned to chumps in third.
Shaky secondary? Difficult schedule?
We were a top ten pass defense last year, and in case you haven’t been paying attention, are ranked pretty good so far this preseason (I know, lol preseason). As for the schedule, we have our division, which is always tough. But aside from that, we have the AFC North, tough, and the NFC West, not so tough. Throw in matches against the Giants and Bears, and I think our schedule won’t get in our way.
Ready for 2010 football already!!!
I think the order is correct, but I really doubt the win totals. I also am not so sure this division sends two teams to the playoffs. I do like that Falcons team this year though. It seems like they have gotten some pretty bad breaks the past couple of years.
Let the beasting begin.

call me a hormer or whatever you want
but I still think the Bucs are a 6 win team this year.

The Buc's already have 2 win's
I think some of you should actually watch a Buc’s game this season. Josh Freeman is quickly developing into a quality QB. The defense has been good since the return to the Tampa-2. With all that the Buc’s are at least middle of the pack team.
Btw already beat the Panthers so might want to reconsider who’s at the bottom in the division.
