UNC suspends Marvin Austin indefinitely
The University of North Carolina has suspended senior Marvin Austin indefinitely. The defensive tackle is expected to be a first round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Austin is one of several North Carolina players currently under investigation by the NCAA for rules violations. For more on the investigation, make sure to check out Carolina March the SB Nation UNC site.
"This decision is not a result of the ongoing NCAA review," UNC head coach Butch Davis said in a release. "Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team."
Austin started 12 games for the Tar Heels last season, registering 42 tackles, six tackles for a loss, four sacks and three pass breakups.
Arguably the top senior defensive tackle in the nation, a long-term suspension could have a seriously negative affect on Austin's draft stock. Before the talk of the NCAA violations surfaced, there were questions about Austin's work ethic on the field. Combine the two, and it might be hard for Austin to crack the first round.
However, UNC could lift the suspension on Austin, much like Oregon did with LeGarrette Blount last season.

Thanks for the linkage, Dan.
I thought Austin was much less effective in the bowl game vs Pitt.
If having a little time off in December had a big impact on his play, he’s probably not going to look so good if/when he gets a chance to play later this year.
And look how well that's going
Already a prima donna.
Bryant simply told a lie about breaking a stupid rule. Austin’s been accused of taking gifts, and now his own team does not want to put up with him. He seems destined to emulate Haynesworth. The question is, does Oakland or Dallas draft him?
This makes him more interesting
How far will his stock fall? Can he expect to plummet like Dunlap? How about Greg Hardy? Is it, ‘the earlier he gets back, the higher he gets picked’?
Also, if this hasn’t got anything to do with the investigation what was it?
