AFC WEST: Regular season and Postseason Predictions

The season is here, so naturally it is time to look ahead to the playoffs. No? This eight-part series takes a look at each division and discusses the outlook for every team in the NFL — in both the regular season and playoffs.

AFC WEST

TEAM: San Diego Chargers

RECORD: 12-4 | Win the Division

REASON: Although the Chargers appeared to be a team on the decline last year, that should change in 2010. Their defense is still respectable, although they do have some concerns along the defensive line. Offensively, the Chargers have lost LaDainian Tomlinson, once the best rusher in the league, but one who seems to have lost his legs. They drafted running back Ryan Matthews to replace Tomlinson, who should reinvigorate their ground game, so long as their offensive line can hold up. The biggest advantage for the Chargers over the rest of their division is the play of quarterback Phillip Rivers.

TEAM: Kansas City Chiefs

RECORD: 8-8 | No Playoffs

REASON: The Chiefs are getting better, but it is a slow process. This off-season they upgraded the defense by picking up safety Eric Berry in the NFL Draft.  Offensively the Chiefs have big holes at tight end, wide receiver, and quarterback. They will need to find a go-to receiver to help out quarterback Matt Cassel who they added from the Patriots last year.  While the Chiefs expected Cassel to give the team a real life, he failed to live up to expectations in 2009.

TEAM: Denver Broncos

RECORD: 6-10 | No Playoffs

REASON: The Broncos are a difficult team to forecast. They have an average quarterback who is capable of winning but if last year is an indication, he tends to fall off halfway through the season. The Chiefs have an impressive stable of running backs, which would promise a strong ground game, but they are all starting the season injured. Their biggest off-season acquisition came through the draft, when head coach Josh McDaniels opted to select Tim Tebow in the first round.  The only problem is that he is not projected to have an immediate impact this season.  Unable to get players who will immediately upgrade the team in the first round it is hard to think this team is destined to improve.

TEAM: Oakland Raiders

RECORD: 5-11 | No Playoffs (though they may improve)

REASON: The Raiders have improved a lot in the off-season, with the release of quarterback Jamarcus Russell and the trade to get quarterback Jason Campbell from Washington.  Campbell is capable of taking Oakland to eight or more wins. Since Campbell’s arrival, Darrius-Heyward Bay has caught almost everything thrown to him, which foretells a vast improvement over nine receptions in 2009. The Raiders have built a solid defense but still have big questions along the offensive line.

Seriously?

How are the chargers going to win games without their Pro Bowl LT, without a pass rush, without a defensive line, without Vincent Jackson, and with a bad secondary? They are a 9 win team solely because of Rivers.

I think a new team takes the division this year other than the Chargers. Many people are picking them by default, but I think another team (possibly the Chiefs, possibly the Raiders) steps up and takes the division.

by JoshuaR on Sep 10, 2010 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

Don't see the Chargers getting to 12-4

not this year. Maybe 10-6. I think the Chiefs take a step up, maybe to 8-8. Raiders are a dark horse.

I would not be surprised to see the Cheifs or Raiders win this division. I think the new DC and OC for KC will help a ton. And having a QB that can hit the broad side of a barn will do wonders in Oakland.

I would be surprised if Denver wins the division, but expect them to come in last place.

Fine it funny that the Broncos fans knock the Chargers for the VIncent Jackson scenario, but ignore Brandon Marshall not in Denver anymore.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 10, 2010 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

Why is that funny?

Do you know nothing about Denver’s WR’s? They spent two high picks on WR’s, the CHargers did nothing to prepare for this. That’s why. Check the stat lines today. The Broncos’ WR’s are better w/out Marshall.

Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker are both more talented than any WR on San Diego’s roster alone. Factor in Eddie Royal, Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Lloyd, and Matt Willis? It’s really not even a contest. I’d put the Broncos at a top 5 WR corps in the NFL.

that is the most blatant case of homerism I have ever seen

seriously, a little homerism is okay, and frankly expected from a fan, but that is over the top

by vitzeng on Sep 15, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Not in the least

I guess you’re entitled to that opinion if you’re unwilling to look at the facts. I think in the NFL, I’d only take the Vikings (with Jackson and Rice), Colts, or Packers receiving corps over ours. There is honestly not a better receiving group out there, and that will play out over the course of the season.

Those arent facts though

You are stating an opinion when you say the Broncos WRs are better than the Chargers or that they are top 5. They havent proven that at all.

Did you know Eric Berry was asexually produced by Chuck Norris?

They are top 5 in the NFL

and will prove that throughout the course of the season. Have an open mind about it, and just watch and see before you criticize.

no.

I already know for a fact they ain’t close to top 5.

Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, Saints, Patriots. That’s 5 better right there, and I’m not even gonna waste any more brain-width finding any more.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 16, 2010 6:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Eagles? Not a chance. Jackson and who? Maclin? Give me a break.

Cowboys have Miles Austin, but Roy Williams sucks, and Dez Bryant is no more proven than Demaryius Thomas.

Giants—pretty solid. Two good ones in Nicks/Smith, but outside of them??

Saints, yes. Forgot about the Saints.

Patriots with Welker and Moss, you could make a case there, but where’s the depth?

But I guess since what you say is fact, you’re right, so I’ll drop it.

It's FreeBradshaw Sayre

It’s like talking to a 12 year old. Just let him have his fun and leav him alone.

Jason Avant is one of the better slot WRs in the game.

The Eagles have a solid trio.

Manningham is very good, so that’s who else to the Nicks and Smith thing. He’s probably the best playmaker of the bunch.

Williams sucks, but Austin is much better then anything you got, same with Welker and Moss.

Not saying I know all, but you don’t even know the players on these teams.

Toney Douglas

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 16, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd take all of those teams' WRs over Denver's

only one I’d be iffy about are the Eagles, but I’d still side with them

there are also the bengals, ravens, and chargers (with V-Jax)

by vitzeng on Sep 16, 2010 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Maclin and Jackson

I would take them all day over Royal and Lloyd. I would take the Cowboys over them, I would take the Saints, I would take the pats, I would take Arizonas, probably the Giants, and probably the Lions even.

they played well

in one game against the Jaguars.

Lets see Brandon Lloyd do it again. He’s had games like that in the past, but he’s never stuck with one team for a reason.

And yea, its also kinda funny boasting after one game.

It also happened last year

in the one game we played without BMarsh

That'd be two in a row

dating back to the Kansas City game.

there was only one game this year

last year doesn’t matter with this.

It's still consistency

dating back to last seasons final game, Lloyd has had a very consistent offseason as well. over 200 yards his last two games. We always talk about losing or winning streaks carrying over from season to season, so there’s no reason to discount his receiving stats from that last game.

chargers easily win division

Chargers 11-5
Oakland 8-8
Chiefs 7-9
Denver 5-11

5-11?

Talk about some good ol’fashioned Denver hate.

i don't hate denver, I just see better things coming out of the other teams

after the first game, the chiefs look poised for the #2 spot but I’m still sticking with oakland ahead of denver

Exactly

It’s one game. You’re putting your stock into one game. I guess the Seahawks are primed for greatness as well.

Fact is

The Chiefs beat the Chargers, who are an average team this year. It shouldn’t be considered a win over a playoff team, becasue the Chargers got significantly worse this offseason. It’s pretty plain to see, but everyone is choosing not to see it for some reason.

You got the Raiders suck

I realize the Titans are good, but the Raiders once again looked like a team coached by a bunch of Pop Warner dads.

Not so high on the Chiefs. Thomas Jones is a sexy pick up and Charles looks like he could be a good scat back, but beyond that their LB’s are mediocre at best, their secondary is very inexperienced, and both lines suck. Not to mention, Cassel wasn’t the QB they thought they got. Not saying they’ll be terrible but all this talk of them finishing near .500 is as much hogwash as it is saying the same thing about the Raiders.

AFC West still kinda sucks, and I don’t see the Broncos knocking the Chargers off just yet, but I think the race will be much closer then last year. Also, I realize they lost to the Jags, but they played pretty well and hung in the sweltering heat till the last drive.

Everyone rips the MSM for their off the wall predictions and yet...

we decide to do it. I have no idea what the records for each of these teams will end up being, but it seems to me 3 teams got better and the Chargers stayed the same. I still think the division championship runs through San Diego. San Diego might lose a game or two in the division, but with their playoff experience, those loses should be close. I do hope that the Raiders, Chiefs, and especially the Broncos close the gap and the AFC West be a competitive division again.
