Rock out with your mock out: Rob Staton
Rob Staton is the progenitor of SeahawksDraftBlog.com, an awesome NFL Draft site dedicated to the Seattle Seahawks. Personally, I love team draft sites. If I ever decide to stop doing MTD, I'll probably launch a Browns-centric draft site.
Anyway, he has his latest mock out here. This one is featured because it's 15 picks. This time of year, it's so hard to tell what teams may be making the playoffs. However, it sure seems obvious which teams are awful this season.
Instead of reviewing Staton's top five, as we usually do here, let's take a look at some of the noteworthy choices.
With the fifth pick, he has New England using the pick traded by Oakland on Alabama junior running back Mark Ingram. It was mentioned recently, maybe by Doug Farrar on Twitter, that New England is at its best with a premier running back. That's something the Patriots have mostly been without for several years. Laurence Maroney was hoped to be that running back, but never truly become it. Fred Taylor has been solid, as has BenJarvus Green-Ellis.
But a player like Ingram is a great mock choice for New England. The way Ingram runs – with excellent vision and explosiveness – seems perfect for a cold weather team.
The other noteworthy choice is Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan going with the 14th pick. The popularity of Kerrigan has really taken off among draftniks. He's got an excellent bull rush, is productive and plays with a lot of tenacity. Staton cites a Chris Long comparison for Kerrigan. Long, though, was more athletic coming out of Virignia. Because of Kerrigan's somewhat lacking athleticism, I'd have a hard time giving him a first-round grade. (see a highlight reel of Kerrigan below)
Out of the top 15? Jake Locker. That seems to be a popular notion lately.

I'm with Dan
You’re dead-on about the athleticism. Once he commits to something, it is that or bust because he is too slow to change mid-play. I like his instincts (see the play where he doesn’t bite on the option pitch at 47 secs) and he has good intensity, but I couldn’t justify a first on him to the fans if I were a GM.

I agree. I think he’ll be a guy that could get around 6 sacks a year but he won’t be elite

Year of the CB?
Looking at the mock that Mr. Staton put-up, it is impossible to miss that he has five CBs going in the top fifteen. I’m wondering if the CB class is that good, if it means it is just a bad year in general, if that is just a critical need for a lot of high pick teams, or if Mr. Staton has been focusing on the position too much? Anyway, appreciate your thoughts Dan (and company).
Like what I’m seeing, and already excited for the draft!
I agree that it is a good class, but is it really THAT good? Last year tackles were going pretty quick, but that is always a pretty coveted position. I am obviously high on Janoris Jenkins, and there is no denying that Patrick Peterson is a gifted athlete who disrupts the game whenever he is on the field, but I feel there has to be some weak spots when five cbs make the top 15. I’m in Atlanta, so I haven’t been able to see Prince Amukamara (been hearing him hyped since last year, so kind of familiar) or Aaron Williams (bit of an unknown for me) really play. I saw the Ohio State-Miami game and didn’t notice Brandon Harris (though in fairness, I wasn’t looking for him). I’m wondering how much of this list is because it is early and if he believes these five will continue to contribute at this level for the rest of the year.

Prince and Peterson are probably locks for going top 15
the others, probably not.

I dont see Denver going CB
they just drafted 2 last year. Unless they lose both Champ and Goodman after this year, I doubt this pick.
Plus Cox is doing well.

wtf?
he’s got the niners passing on Ryan Mallett and Christian Ponder for Aaron Williams. I hate that pick. Not only am I not sold on Aaron Williams, but QB is clearly the biggest need for the 49ers right now, and Mallet & Ponder are both good options.
He says the Niners want to win now? they sure won’t be doing that with Alex Smith at the helm. Terrible pick, imo.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I'm liking CB for the Rams
Like last years top 2 DTs Petersen and Amakamura are sure fire hits. Unfortunately, again, we have other needs.
