Marcell Dareus NFL Draft scouting report
Marcell Dareus
6'4, 306 pounds | Defensive end/tackle | Alabama
Pass rush: is a much better pass rusher than people give him credit. Dareus gets out of his stance quickly due to an excellent first step. Is agile enough to move around and doesn't simply have to rely on power moves. Closes fast on the quarterback. Has technically sound handwork to disengage from blockers. Good rip move. Uses some on stunts but looked good.
Pursuit: Consistently plays with high effort and is relentless. Shows good balance to maintain his pace when getting knocked around. Some questioned his effort as a junior, but Dareus routinely saw multiple blockers in 2010. He still finished with 11 tackles for loss as a junior.
Run defend: Does a great job on the edge maintaining his position. Anchors his position nicely. Shows good leg drive to move blockers around. Although Dareus is stout against the run, he's not necessarily the kind of lineman who can fill two gaps.
Strength: Dareus has NFL-ready strength throughout his frame. He's thick in his lower body, which helps him bull rush. Got to show his strength playing the nose on occasion in 2010. That showed especially against Florida when he easily handled center Mike Pouncey with a bull rush.
Tackling: Is a sudden, hard-hitting tackler. Isn't a big-time hitter like other interior linemen in this class. However, he's more technically sound in his wrap-up.
Technique: An experienced five-technique, Dareus is the top 3-4 defensive end in the draft because of his long arms and technique. He consistently extends his arms to hold the edge. Stays low like a veteran to get leverage. Dareus' technique is NFL ready and why he could be a good contributor early in his career.
Final word: It's not often 3-4 defensive ends come along who are as polished, strong and athletic as Dareus. Playing end in Alabama's pro-style 3-4 defense, Dareus should start as a rookie if a team with the same scheme picks him up.
He's a good pass rusher for such a big player, but most teams will like him for his run-stopping ability. Dareus is powerful throughout his frame and should be able to hold the edge well.
Dareus really came on toward the end of the 2009 season and won defensive MVP honors in the BCS National Championship game. Suspended the first two games of 2010 after the NCAA found he accepted benefits from an agent. Has overcome a rough upbringing.

Honestly, Denver should grab this man or Peterson.
And Buffalo should grab this man or Quinn. Both would fill decent holes for their respective teams.
But I mostly say this hoping that the Panthers grab A.J. Green instead of Nick Fairley cause gogdammit I want me some Fairley.
No it isn't.
I’ve heard rumblings that Darues is a workout warrior and can run a sub 4.7. He does that at 305lbs he’ll have a shot at the #1 overall considering his production

Isn't his explosiveness more important than his overall 40?
Kellen Moore is awesome
Katie Mcgrath is our savior
my dog <3
Course
but when a DL runs that fast he generally goes high

For all you guys that mock a D Lineman to the Lions...if it is Dareus, I am okay with it.
The rest of the guys…..not so much. Except maybe Bowers.
Of course if either of those guys make it to # 13, something is seriously wrong.
We have a young speed rusher already. Cliff Avril
The guy has three years NFL experience and is still only 24. We also have Lawrence Jackson and Willie Young. Willie just needs a little more bulk, and some experience and he will be a great situational pass rusher.
We could use a strong bull rusher, run stopper to back up KVB.

Can never have too many pass rushers
I know Avril is solid. But Quinn while he looks and moves like a speed rusher, isn’t exactly a slouch against the run. I don’t think its out of the question to have him at LDE. The Giants did the same with JPP and he appears to be much more than a speed rusher. Quinn is damn near a clone of JPP athletically too.

Why is Fairley ranked higher than this behemoth?
I just don’t get it.
Dareus is
1. A better run stopper: he doesn’t get pushed out of the play by double teams like Fairley, and is much better at getting his arms out to fill rushing lanes. Dareus has much better lateral agility, which is why you see him making tackles in the flat or down field.
2. A more polished pass rusher: He needs to work on not coming too high out of his stance, but he can do more than just be an A-gap penetrator like Fairley. He showed his athleticism lining up at every position along the line at Alabama.
3. Doesn’t have the red flags like Fairley, despite growing up in difficult circumstances. One of the craziest stories about him, is that broadcasters have been pronouncing his last name wrong (The Dar part of Dareus rhymes with jar, not bear). And despite playing at a national level, he told the broadcasters that he didn’t care if the pronounced his name wrong, getting his name right on TV wasn’t important to him.
4. Not a one-year-wonder.
I just think this guy’s stock is still going to go up.
I was eleven when Elway made the "leap" in Super Bowl XXXII, but I like to think that's still the moment I was conceived. Go Broncos!

Like him better than Fairley
As a Panther fan, with the choice of Fairley and Dareus, I’d much rather take Dareus. Yes, he hasn’t produced as much as Fairley has, but he is more dominant than the stats give him credit. Dareus also doesn’t come with a ton of baggage and potential issues that make him a liablility, like Fairley. While Dareus is suited well for the 3-4, I can see him playing in the 4-3 just as Tyson Alualu did. Honestly, if it came down to picking a DT with the 1st overall pick, I’d take Dareus over Fairley.
Same.

Big Daddy Dareus is unreal.
His numbers are down cuz he plays out of the 3-4 and even plays some nose tackle.
His burst and athleticism are ridiculous.
