2-Team Mock 2nd Edition: Giants & Bengals (edited 1/23)

I made some changes to the Bengals picks because Palmer will be gone.

I'm doing these teams because they were the only recommendations I got from my 1st edition.

These are not my favorite teams, and I have only watched them play a few times each, so understand that I don't know these teams as well as a real fan does.

Star-divide

New York Giants

The Giants don't have a 5th round pick.

Round 1, pick 19- Nate Solder OT Colorado-  The Giants don't protect Eli as well as they should, and 4 of their offensive lineman are over 30 (and Chris Snee is 29).  They could use the help of an AP All-American.  Solder showed consistency in his blocking his whole career. He could anchor that line for as long as Manning is there, and even longer.

Round 2, pick 20- Mason Foster OLB Washington-  Foster has the size and skillset to replace Keith Bulluck as the SS linebacker should he go to free agency (Chase Blackburn is also a FA).  Even if Bulluck returns, it won't be for long as he is 33 years old.  Foster's 378 career tackles is remarkable, and that skill for tackling will translate well into the pros.

Round 3, pick 19- Shane Vereen RB California-  I know this isn't one of their greater needs, but Vereen is a great back and would be a steal in the 3rd.  Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs had major fumbling issues over the entire season.  Bradshaw is a FA (and so is Danny Ware), and I think they will find a way to retain him, but there is always a chance that another team finds a way to get the guy they want.

Round 4, pick 20- Deunta Williams FS North Carolina- Williams once was a projected 2nd-3rd round pick, whos stock dropped as he failed to make big plays his senior season.  His stock dropped a little more when he broke his leg in his bowl game.  But Williams still has tremendous skills that he showed his sophmore and junior years, and if the Giants can get him back to that form, he will be a great back-up that could develop into a full-time starter.  The G-men need more depth at safety because 2 of their back-ups are FA's and Kenny Phillips could get injured again.

Round 6, pick 20- Clint Boling OG Georgia-  It's been said that Boling doesn't pull well and doesn't have as much upside as some of the other guards, but that doesn't seem valid because he was a 4-year starter in a pro-style offense.  Boling will add some needed depth on the Giant's line.

Round 7, pick 19- Terrell McClain DT South Florida- McClain is an under-the-radar player who can add depth to the Giant's front line.  He was selected to the All-Big East 1st team all conference this past season.

Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals have alot of needs, so I will try to address those needs as well as give them high value players for their respective rounds.

Round 1, pick 4- Marcell Dareus DT/DE Alabama-  The Bengals seriously need to help out a front line that was 29th in the league in sacks.  Dareus alone can lower that number.  He was a force to be reckoned with the whole season, most noticeably in the Bowl game vs Michigan State.  In that game, the 306-pounder lined up at DT and DE, and got pressure from both positions.  Dareus is a sure pick in every way.

Round 2, pick 3- Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas- Mallett could drop this far because of the rumors surrounding him about him doing drugs and stuff like that.  But there is no evidence that he does, and alot of other players in this draft do although no one seems to care.  Some experts compare him to Cutler (attitude, leadership, and mentality, as well as skillset), and hasn't Cutler been pretty good so far?  Mallett is too good to pass up at 35th overall, especially considering there newfound need at QB with Palmer demanding a trade.

Round 3, pick 2- Tyler Sash SS Iowa-  Every safety on the Bengals' roster is either a FA or simply not good.  If Cincy drafts Sash, he won't be a FA and he won't be not good.  Sash was a leader on a very good Iowa defense.  He has 13 career INTs, including 2 this past season.  Sash could start right away or be a back-up, depending on who they resign.

Round 4, pick 4- Stephen Schilling OG Michigan-  Schilling has showed alot of versatility over his career at Michigan...he has played RT, LG, and RG in his collegiate career.  Schilling won't play tackle but the Bengals know that they can put Schilling at left or right guard and he will succeed.  The Bengals have 3 free agent guards, so this pick makes sense in every way.

Round 5, pick 3- Casey Matthews ILB Oregon-  The Bengals need depth at both inside and outside linebacker, and although Casey is listed as an ILB, he can play both positions. Dhani Jones is old and a free agent, and Rey Maualuga isn't going to be a superstar when he moves back inside to replace Jones.  Even if they resign Jones for 1-2 more years or sign a different FA,  they still will need depth that Matthews can bring.

Round 6, pick 2- Justin Rogers CB Richmond- Rogers is listed as a CB, but he does alot more than shut down receivers.  He returns punts, and also made appearances on offense early in his collegiate career.  Rogers is a pure athlete who will play cornerback in the NFL, but will also be an option on returns and very good on special teams coverage.  The Bengals could go receiver here but I feel that they should be content with young receivers Jordan Shipley, Jerome Simpson, and Andre Caldwell.  They wouldn't take a WR unless he was a stud and a steal.

Round 7, pick 4- Evan Royster RB Penn St.-  Cedric Benson is a FA and he fumbled 7 times this season. Some GMs wouldn't pay a guy who can't hold on to the ball, even if he rushes for 1,111 yards.  Even if Benson is brought back, it won't be long term, and the Bengals would need a 3rd back behind Benson and Scott should one of them get injured (which will be expected if the season expands to 18 games).  Royster is a good sized back at 6'0 218 who runs similar to Benson, just not nearly as good (and doesn't fumble as much).

 Thanks for reading.

Tell me what you think, remember I'm not a fan of these teams so I don't know as much about them as a real fan.

Offseason team needs: Giants

I agree

the Giants should get an OL in the first round. The Giants should be looking to draft a new running back, because Jacobs won’t return

That is not a pic of me.

For someone who doesn't watch their games, you know the needs of the Giants pretty well.

I’d make changes only b/c of big board discrepancies I have.
Depending on whose left at 19, I’d like Carimi, Sherrod, or Costanzo more than Solder. Also, if Mark Ingram or Akeem Ayers are still around, they’re the pick.

In the 2nd, if we didn’t pick an LB in the first, Mason Foster is a strong strong pick. I like it, though if Martez Wilson were available, I’d have to think hard about picking him.

In the 3rd, got no problems there….only people who probably are available at that juncture that i’d like more would be Ryan Williams or Demarco Murray.

In the 4th, well, okay I think I MIGHT have to disagree on this one…simply because we’ve got Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, Deon Grant, and we MAY get Chad Jones back next year. Corner back is the most pressing need and if we can get Chase Minniefield, Shareece Wright, or Davon House there, I’ll take em though I definitely can’t argue the value of Deunta Williams.

Round 6 is a perfect pick. No complaints…great value at a position where depth is a need.

Round 7, idk too much about the dude, but you are right in that one later rounder should be a flier on the defensive front.

Overall, excellent job with the picks.

Either get angry, or get the hell out.

I agree I don't like Solder as much as others either

but the more I think of it Solder is the OL the Giants will draft over those others. His far and away the best athlete of that bunch and also the biggest. Kinda sounds like JPP vs Derrick Morgan vs Brandon Graham vs Jerry Hughes. JPP wasn’t the best in college among them, but he was the better athlete and the Giants most likely had JPP higher than them all.

Be prepared for a tongue-lashing from sexsalad over the Green pick.

Go Suns, Packers, Jays, and Huskers!

And go Shawn Watson and Barney Cotton! Seriously, leave Lincoln. Now.

Yes.

I hate the Green pick.

He's the best player available

that’s all I can say that I didn’t already say. Just curious who would you rather them draft at that pick?

Don't like Solder

too friggin tall and raw. Also I dunno that the Giants don’t protect Eli all that well, they have the least sacks allowed in the NFL or close to it. Lot of that is Eli’s pocekt awareness.

Then again its just the reasoning that grinds my gears. The Giants DO need a lineman cuz they can’t run block for shit. If they think Solder as an elite athlete can be molded into an LT than fine. I just think he’s too tall and will be injury prone. Also he’s probably gonna have to deal with midgets like Trent Cole or Brandon Graham at least twice a year. Dunno how that’s gonna work.

I like the idea of picking 2OLs. I do think that one at least needs to be a G/C combo tho, Giants actually could probably use a starter at C..unless Boling can do that already.

I like the Foster pick. I think its more of a need than BPA, but if its a choice between an injured player like Bruce Carter and Foster, a dude who’s probably just a solid starter, I’d choose Foster.

Love the Vereen pick. He’s a lot like Bradshaw except he can actually catch the ball and also doesn’t juke himself into 7 yard gains when he can gain 40 instead.

Deunta Williams is good value, I just think that a CB…a fast CB, is needed. Especially if Chad Jones might could come back and Phillips is another year removed from his surgery (they took it easy on his responsibilities this year I thinks).

But overall good mock for the Giants tho. I don’t like Solder, he’s a bit like JPP for me last year. And of course the Giants drafted him and he looks like he’s a potential superstar pass rusher.

Bengals picks...

1. Yuck. For my reasoning why it’s a bad pick, go check the other 92139499321 mocks that give us Green.
2. I’m not totally opposed to a DE pick. I would prefer a DT, but I don’t see any of good value in our particular spot in the second. I would personally go with an OG/OT tweener who can be a backup plan for Lard Tits or be a force on the interior.
3. I can’t complain about this pick at all. I’m comfortable enough with Nelson at FS to do this.
4. If we haven’t picked up an OG earlier, we need one at some point. I’m glad you didn’t totally ignore the need. Decent pick in this scenario, although I hate Michigan.
5. Rey Maualuga is going to move to ILB. It will probably be this season. This pick needs to be an OLB.
6. I want a guy who can run between the tackles and take poundings from vicious AFCN defenses. Lewis is explosive, but he has the frame of a high schooler. Not an ideal back for us at all, except as a COP back. But we already have one of those in Scott.
7. I’m totally cool with this pick. He could be a solid backup, and we’re lacking one of those badly. Good pick.

This is actually one of the less sickening pictures of him running the 40...

For anyone who wants to see what I mean, GIS “Andre Smith 40 yard dash.” It’s nasty.

Ive seen worse pics than this

I was flipping through Sports Illustatred around the draft last year and they had a pciture of a 300+ lb lineman running the 40, and it was twice as bad is this pic.

Wow, thanks for hitting the Bengals

and hitting it well.
1. I’m good with Green, especially if Fairley, Peterson, and Bowers are gone. I might be talked into Quinn or Dareus but Green IS the real deal.
2. I’d prefer either Marvin Austin or, failing that, Marcus Cannon.
3. Sash sounds great. Roy Williams is apparently made out of straw.
4. Schilling is good, too, unless, of course, we get Cannon in round two.
5. I love Casey Matthews but, like sexsalad says, Rey is presumably moving in at some point to replace Dhani and the promising Rodderick Muckelroy as a back-up. Maybe Dontay Moch here?
6. I’d prefer Taiwan Jones to Lewis
7. Maybe a kicker. Auburn’s Wes Bynum?

Seriously, a heck of an effort for a non-Bengals fan. Thanks.

by IgnatiusJReilly on Jan 23, 2011 12:27 AM EST reply actions

Scouts say Matthews can play inside or out.

He’s really versitile which he showed in the BCS championship, he looks like he could play either LB position. And I didn’t know Rey was moving inside I guess that changes their needs a bit. I have a feeling someone will pick Moch before then. Thanks for commenting.

Well, let's just say

everybody thinks that Rey is Dhani’s heir apparent. When that happens is anyone’s guess. Myself, I kind of wonder whether he has the head for middle linebacker with it’s responsibilities. Inside, out, or special teams, I do think Casey Matthews would be a great addition to the team as a whole.

Bengals.

1. Not a fan of Green. Top 5 Wr’s are the most busted pick in the history of the draft (there’s your fun fact for the day). Lots of young talent at WR and I’m not sure a new WR that thinks he’s the shit isn’t what I want to replace the idiot Ocho.

2. Kerrigan doesn’t fit at all. We like our DE’s to be large enough to kick inside for passing downs. Kerrigan is 6’4 263. That’s pretty small for our DL. Allen Bailey would be 100x more a fit.

3.Solid pick.

4. Ok with Schilling in round 4 rather look into Moffit (i think he will to top of the 4th)

5. I’d go running back here instead of 6th. Casey is good but not sure if he would realistically even be available in the 5th. I see a guy like Nate Irving being here but not Mathews after his bowl game performance (and i think he’ll test out great)

6. Here’s where I would go LB like with Josh Bynes. so let me talk about Dion here instead. How does he fit as a replacement of Cedric Benson? Dion is 5’8" 195 and Ced is 5’11" 227. We don’t have a feature back if he leaves, I rather have a guy like Taiwan at 5 because at his 6’1 frame he can put on another 10 lbs and still be built.

7. Good B.S. pick I’m fine with it, I would say Dan Lefevour would beat him out as a back up since were likely going a more west coast if childress goes with us, with a mildly more mobile QB being more valuable. So I maybe would consider drafting another Wr to mix with special teams, a

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Jan 23, 2011 2:08 AM EST reply actions

OK but just one thing

I understand that top-5 WRs are often busts, but thats because most teams picking in the top 5 don’t have a decent QB (thats why they were so bad that season) and also dont have another receiver that can draw a little attention so the rookie isn’t getting double-covered or covered by the opposing team’s best Cornerback

I beleive Carson Palmer is actually a pretty good quarterback and the Bengals have a few other receivers.

Closer

I think your heading in the right direction.
Our owners thinking is quirky to say the least.

I’m convinced myself we may take a QB in the 1st now. The fact with declining ticket sales mixed with Carson wanting out may make Mike Brown think they need a new Face/Star at QB for fans to support. And I think he would do this in the first round.

Also later in the draft mid rounds I expect a WR to be drafted. Ocho on his way out and T.O is gone.

Hopefully my picture doesn't show my bias.

by C Byers on Jan 23, 2011 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

I like the mock draft

I like it.

I don’t love Solder necessarily, but I don’t have a problem with the pick.

I really like Mason Foster in the second round, to me he just screams overacheiver and players with N.F.L. talent (which he has) and a devout work ethic often end up being good solid players.

He can’t match the potential of Bruce Carter or Akeem Ayers, but he won’t fail in the N.F.L. and is a lunch pail kind of guy the GIants need on defense (Tuck is one but they need more)

Here’s where you worked some magic

The third and fourth round picks are excellent.

Vereen would be excellent for the Giants, just a good player.

and Williams provides excellent value.

People often don’t realize how truly FEW players succeed in the N.F.L. after the first two or three rounds.

Just grab players who can play in the league and Williams is one of these players.

Sixth and seven are good picks too, they have a chance to stick to the roster that’s all you ask for late in the draft.

Ideally

the first two rounds

I would love something like (trade down in the first)

Mark Ingram
Kyle Rudolph

but that’s unlikely

akeem Ayers
Ryan Wiliams

would be nice

Great job with the Giants

Like tackle in the first, even though I am not high on Solder personally
No argument with Foster or a SLB in the 2nd
Happy with Vereen or RB of similar talent in 3rd
Williams is a good value in 4th and we need safety depth
Boling is a good value in the 6th and we need backups that can play multiple positions
Only jerks argue 7th round picks
