2011 Senior Bowl weigh-in notables
The Senior Bowl weigh-in took place today and there were some notable happenings. I'm not big on getting into body types – who looks good, who looks flabby, etc. That's weird to me. Check out Wes Bunting's tweets for that kind of thing, I guess.
Tony Pauline has the numbers on his site, so find the South roster here and the North roster here.
The first thing that stood out to me was Gabe Carimi's arm length. At 35 1/4 inches, he has one of the better arm lengths among offensive linemen. I thought he'd have shorter arms. One player who does is Auburn's Lee Ziemba. At 33 1/2 inches, he may have to move inside to guard.
A couple of guys came in really light. Most notably, Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan measured at 255 pounds. Now people are saying he should only be a 3-4 outside linebacker candidate. Did you know Jared Allen played last season at 255 pounds?
Some other light players were West Virginia running back Noel Devine (160 pounds) and Miami cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke (168 pounds).
Others of note:Michigan State middle linebacker Greg Jones came in at just under six foot. He's 5'11 and 7/8 to be precise. There's some hullaballoo about him being too short for linebacker. If he was an eighth of an inch taller, would anyone be saying anything?
Colorado left tackle Nate Solder is a legit 6-foot-8, but has an arm length of 34 1/2 inches.
Louisville running back Bilal Powell has been listed a few places at 6-foot-1. Actual height? He's 5-foot-11.
Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea came in much lighter than I anticipated. After being listed at 311 by OSU, he came in today at 295 pounds.

Never knew why Paea was being listed at 311 in the first place
Derrek Sherrod helped himself at the weigh in too. 6’5 312lbs and 35" arms. I think those that were predicting him as a high riser, into the top 10 possibly, may be right should he blow up the combine too.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Is Paea still projected
as a 3-4 NT? If so he seems a little light for the position….
2011 Draft Needs:
SOLB, NT, WR, C, RT, depth..........
Big things poppin next year!
Even if he plays with awesome pad level and maintains perfect leverage
it seems like most guards and centers that can perform a halfway decent double team should be able to get movement on a <300# NT…
If he is picked for a NT spot
It’s not like he couldn’t be a part of a rotation until his weight is up
Cassel out, Andrew Luck in!

is 303. Paea could easily put on that weight, so it’s a definite possibility he ends up in Houston to anchor their 34 DL.
Weigh-in thoughts
Solder’s 34.5’’ arm length is what I had read from a preseason Pro Football Weekly write-up beforehand. Definitely wish it was longer (the ideal is 36’’), especially for such a tall tackle – although glad to see he’s 6-8 and not 6-9 as some pegged him as.
What surprised me was Sherrod at 35.5’’, and both Castonzo and Carimi at 35.25’’, all of those an inch-plus longer than the aforementioned PFW write-up. Very pleasant surprise.
As a Colts fan, I love it. Heights and weights all look good for those guys too, particular Sherrod as Rorschach stated above (I’d ideally like a left tackle in the 6-5 or 6-6 range and around 310 lbs.). Can’t wait for the Colts to get one of these guys, hopefully at least one lasts until their pick.
I think James Brewer is well-regarded by the Colts for that matter. They like to take somewhat developmental offensive lineman in the 4th round (Jacques McClendon of Tennessee being the most example last year), he could be that guy this year.
Glad to see Carimi come in at 315, but also his Badgers teammate John Moffitt at 314 as I was hoping to see him lose some pounds from his frame. Conversely Rodney Hudson came in at 291, more than some expected/listed.
I’ve been public with my disbelief of Paea’s listed 311 weight, he came in as I expected at a much lighter 295. One such reason why I’ve been consistent the last few weeks in bringing him up in the discussion of the Colts’ 2nd round pick, but not their 1st round pick.
Greg Jones’ height won’t help him, although the Colts love linebackers at his size (6-0/240ish). The bigger problem is that I don’t he’s particularly quick and explosive. If teams aren’t looking at him as a middle linebacker, he needs speed/explosion as a weakside linebacker prospect.
Meanwhile Kelvin Sheppard weighed in at 250. Damn, son. If he played at that weight during the season, he looked quicker. He’s a good linebacker prospect.
Jeremy Beal similarly came in at a robust 268. I think both 4-3 and 3-4 teams are going to look at him.
That’s what immediately caught my eye, anyways.

Arm length is a consideration for sure
Here is an article discussing arm length from yahoo.com …
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ys-heightvsarmlength031209
34 to 34 7/8 is considered good while 35" and over is considered great.
Joe Thomas was 33 3/4".

I think arm length is good but I would prefer someone who can actually move his feet and block.
I've got 39" arms
Does that mean I’m in the wrong profession?

Anyone can do that.
Just gotta push that arm far enough.

Lol I love this time of the Senior Bowl
all these kids look stupid when its blatantly obvious their “listed” size is nowhere near the truth.
Paea I didn’t think he was 311, but 295? He better hope to put on at least 10 pounds by the combine or any 1st round hopes of his are gone
lol
he took a shot at Wes Bunting
do you think Wes like’s guys? and their body types?

Wasn’t a shot. Just saying that’s where you can find that information if you so choose. Wes does great stuff for NFP.

lol
I know I follow him actually
I dont want to hear about flab and muscles though

check out Wes for that kind of thing, I guess
it sounds weird to me

Do you guys know where I can get a replay on Senior Bowl practices.

Wow!
I didn’t hear that. Jeez! But still, there is the combine and pro days as well. Cody didn’t lose all the weight he needed to in that time period but he showed he was on the right track and it earned him getting picked up in the 2nd. Even if Von puts on 5-10 pounds, maybe he can show them that he’s still able to continue to gain weight

I'd think it depends on his speed
He was listed at 240lbs most spots anyway, so I don’t think he’s on or off any more wish lists than he was before.
But if he runs a 4.4 or something, someone will draft him. He can rush the passer and someone will find a home for a heat seeking missile like that…if he does that.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Roberth Mathis: 6-2, 245
Pretty close. Maybe a team takes a chance on him as a pure 4-3 edge rusher?
Jason Heyward wins at baseball.
For everyone that keeps talking on the flab and muscle things
I admit its kinda awkward, but I think it does help. Look at Andre Smith, he looked like a fat piece of crap without his shirt on and guess what? He plays like a fat piece of crap. I know its not a perfect formula, but I bet teams pay a lot of attention to these kids’ bodies, there’s a reason why they all weigh in in just compression shorts.
Maybe thats why Clayborn and some of these other kids pulled out of the Senior Bowl. I think its because they and their agents didn’t like their weight/body and didn’t want to risk them hurting their draft stock. They could be just waiting for the combine so they either gain/lose the weight to impress scouts
Or extra time to flush the “coolant” from the radiator", if you get my drift.
