Saturday NFL Draft watch notes
It's going to be an excellent, busy day of college football. Of course, we have the NFL Draft angle covered. There are some general notes below and there will be more on Baylor at Texas A&M, Miami at North Carolina, Arizona State at Oregon and Clemson at Maryland. Also make sure to check out 3k's massive prospect watch list. Just click to download. It's a great index to have handy while watching games.
The weekend's top one-on-one matchup could take place if LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne lines up against Tennessee sophomore wide receiver Da'Rick Rodgers. Is a big receiver at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds and could test Claiborne because he's much stronger. That's where there are questions about Claiborne's game. He's been a big-time draft board riser this season and his play today couldn't confirm whether or not it's warranted.
It's always hard to predict cornerback/wide receiver matchups, but one that is certain to take place is Virginia's Chase Minniefield covering Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill. When Hill touches the ball, a big play generally happens. He hasn't faced a cornerback like Minniefield, who needs a big game to remain in first-round discussion.
Another head-to-head showdown to observe is Michigan center David Molk center David Molk against Michigan State defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Molk is an underrated, athletic center who should be able to negate Worthy's quickness. Worthy is beginning to play well for the first time this season, but still has plenty to prove.
The Purdue/Penn State game features two of the best defensive tackles in the nation with Kawann Short of the Boilermakers and Devon Still of the Nittany Lions. Short has six tackles for loss this season and is hard to move off the line. Still has been a sensation this season with nine tackles for loss. His play has been much better than his stats. Still has been so good, he could sneak into the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Some are starting to take notice of Duke quarterback Sean Renfree. He's thrown for more than 300 yards twice this season an is competing 71 percent of his passes on the season. He struggled some against Stanford, so it will be interesting to see what he does against Florida State today. He's a player who could be a hot name for the 2013 NFL Draft.
