Brock Osweiler NFL Draft prospect notes
Brock Osweiler
6'8, 240 pounds | Quarterback | Arizona State
First word: Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler has played himself into the first-round discussion with his play as a junior. He's picked apart the Southern California and Missouri defenses and looked good against Utah.
Clearly, though, he remains a work in progress. Arizona State's passing offense is based around the short passing game to open up the deep ball. In truly his first season as a starting quarterback, Osweiler has made strides but has a ways to go. He shows his inexperience when faced with pressure and tends to put the ball in bad spots too often.
But for a player who has started less than 10 games in college, he has a lot of potential. He's obviously got incredible size (even if it's inflated), a great arm and an incredibly high ceiling. Read our prospect notes on Osweiler after the jump.
Notes:
- Has worked a lot to shorten up and quicken his delivery. Coming out of high school, Osweiler had a long release. Before his junior season with the Sun Devils, he worked diligently to shorten his release. It has been successful for Osweiler, though it has lowered his release point. He'll on occasion revert to his old motion, especially when he has to drive the ball deep.
- Still learning line adjustments to better protect himself against blitzes. Clearly struggled in this area against Illinois. In that game, Osweiler was forced to forced to speed up his game, which led to some poor ball placement.
- Isn't a statue in the pocket. A former high school basketball player, Osweiler has nimble feet and is quick enough to elude pressure.
- Has an arm that is exceptionally strong, and maybe the strongest of any quarterback eligible for the draft. He just doesn't get to show it all the time for Arizona State.
- Knows how to take some zip off his ball in the short passing game. Many quarterbacks with the same kind of big arm throw short passes too hard, making them hard to catch.
- Has made improvements reading defenses pre-snap as the season has progressed. Benefits from predominantly lining up in the shotgun.
- It's difficult to fully judge Osweiler's footwork since he takes few snaps from under center. Many long limbed quarterbacks get tangled up on five-step drops and have to take their time. This is probably the biggest area of Osweiler's game that needs to be evaluated.

When Jim Harbaugh says "more is more" I think he is trying to say Moore is more.
Could be an early pick in 2013
He would be best served returning to school for 2012 and trying to build on this year.
Yeah he wont declare this year
Even with all that potential just one year as a starter will push him out of the first round. Who knows he may be the 1st Qb taken next year if Luck isnt around.

There isn't a chance he is considered a first rounder in 2012.
He doesn’t have the track record or freak athleticism. He’d have to compete with Luck, Jones, Barkley, and Griffin III if they all come out. He would still be behind others as well such as Foles.

I think a team would have to fall in love with his ability and trade back into the first to get him. Pure skills alone, I think he’s a first-round talent. But you’re right about his lack of a track record.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
I don't think he'll be able to force any teams to fall in love with him...
He doesn’t exactly face the stiffest of competition to allow someone to say “Did you look at this highlight game?” His best chance would be in a major bowl game, but I don’t expect ASU to reach one barring a major upset of Oregon or Stanford in the conference championship. He wasn’t particularly impressive against Oregon, but he looked good against USC and Missouri. He has a very good completion percentage and does a good job of leading his team, but his TD:INT ratio isn’t exactly where you’d want it to be for a first round QB. With a solid QB class this year, I think his best bet is to go back to school next year and build his stock. Stanford and USC won’t be as strong, especially if Luck and Barkley leave as expected. Oregon will still be a contender, but I think Osweiler actually has a chance to get ASU a solid ranking and make waves next year in the PAC 12. If ASU is able to win a PAC 12 Championship, that will boost Osweiler’s stock much more than anything he could do this year.

He'd probably grade out better than Barkley and Foles this year

there's probably 20 NFL teams right now that would kill for Joe Flacco

He's a project but he's got a lot of talent
he’s a former B-ball player so while he’s 6"8 he’s not just an oversize QB, he’s got good athleticism.
He’s probably closer to Colin Kaepernick then any of these other guys. He’s gonna need a few years but probably worth taking a shot with a 2nd rounder.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
I love this guy
Great arm strength, but as Dan said has the ability to dial it down. Good accuracy. Athletic for his size. Yes, he needs more experience. But I think he’s more ready than Flacco, Kaepernick, or Freeman. Top 5 pick in 2013 if he stays.

I can easily see that happening

Flacco was lauded for being a high level athlete too
I’m not sure any of that has translated to the league. Good athletes are everywhere in the NFL. They really don’t stand out regardless of what position they play. Great athletes, however, absolutely do.
Keep in mind Flacco had a better 3-cone time than Matt Forte, Felix Jones and Justin Forsett, and his 20-yd shuttle time of 4.27 was pretty darn close to Jamaal Charles’ 4.22. Those are just useless numbers on paper, sure, but they helped extend Flacco’s hype back then.
@dryanbball
All that doesnt matter to a QB unless he can throw on the run well
Which I suspect Flacco doesnt since Balt. does not utilize him much on PA rollout passes
