Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech NFL Draft watch notes

A few quick notes on what's going on in my head before the Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech game gets going tonight.

Just how good is Georgia Tech junior wide receiver Stephen Hill? He's really Tech's only receiving target out of their option offense. On the season, he has 20 catches for 608 yards and four touchdowns. But much of Hill's production came in the first two games of the year when he had seven catches for 307 yards and three touchdowns. In those two games, Hill showed off incredible leaping ability and hands. He's a long-striding tall player at 6-foot-4. His speed seems deceptive, but he's surely not the next Calvin Johnson as some purport. Hill seems to have the skills to be a very good receiver, but doesn't have a great sample size to show it.

One of the players I'm keying on in the game is Yellow Jackets junior cornerback Rod Sweeting. He's a tall, athletic corner who is starting for the first time this season. The Hokies have solid wide receiver (and a good young quarterback in Logan Thomas), so Sweeting will grab headlines with a good game.

If you haven't watched Hokies running back David Wilson, tonight is a good time to start. After Alabama's Trent Richardson, he's my favorite running back prospect.

Star-divide

Here are some quick thoughts from October on the Virginia Tech players:

Hokies junior Jayron Hosley is the kind of cornerback that opposing teams try to avoid. He's not making quite as many plays this season as he has in the past, but is a dangerous player. Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas is an intriguing player. He's only a redshirt sophomore, so I'm not paying a lot of attention to his game. But at a listed 6-foot-6 and 254 pounds, it's hard to not to notice Thomas. Also for Virginia Tech, guard Jaymes Brooks and tackle Blake DeChristopher are draftable prospects, as is safety Eddie Whitley and wide receiver Jarrett Boykin.

The Rams

Would could use Wilson. Lamar Miller is IMO the better of the two; but The Rams would do great with either selection. Stephen Hill would be a nice pickup in the later rounds. I think that Tommy Streeter would be a better choice. Streeter displays speed to consistently get behind the defender and reliable hands.

Hill reminds me more of Demariyous Thomas then Megatron

then again, maybe Thomas would look a lot better if he had a real QB throwing him the rock for one time in his college-pro career.

I also like David Wilson, tho kind of like Lamar Miller he’s more of a straight line speed type guy instead of that one cut and lose no speed type of guy. Both kind remind me of Willie Parker

Did you see Wilson returning kicks?

It has me thinking. What if we put Jacobs back there. Sure, he can’t catch. But it gets him into the open field at full speed.
