What teams could consider trading up for Luck?

It seems pretty clear that the Indianapolis Colts will have the 1st pick in the draft and if they decide to trade it, who will be trading up. I am now going to go over some different scenarios of teams trading up. Remember that its way to early to be sure, this is more to create some discussion and to see what everyone else thinks.

Star-divide

Team #1 - Cleveland Browns - Colt McCoy is a decent QB. He's one of those guys that can take you to the playoffs but won't win you a championship. Considering that they own the Atlanta Falcons first round pick gives them a golden opportunity to move up a significant bit. Also becuase they will probably get another Top-5 pick would give the Colts a opportunity to still get a star player.

Team #2 - San Fransisco 49'ers - Don't get me wrong, Alex Smith has to an extent revived his career however his play isn't why the Niners are 8-1. It's due to there run-game, great defense, and magnificent coaching. The Niners could trade up to get Luck because they have a player that many people tend to forget about, Colin Kapernick. Kaepernick was drafted as a future franchise QB, however packaging him with some picks would allow the Niners to select Andrew Luck.

Team #3 - Seattle Seahawks - The Seahawks probably won't have a high enough pick to select the #3 QB, Matt Barkely. If they aren't happy enough with Landry Jones or Robert Griffin they could trade up. The Seahawks are in rebuilding mode however have some decent recievers and a star QB would help the team greatly.

Team #4 - Washington RedDeadskins - Same situation as with the Seahawks, they probably have won themselves out of competition for the Top 2 or maybe even Top 3 QB's. The QB situation here is dismal and anyone would help however if they dont like the other prospects enough they might try to trade up.

Remember these are just my opinions and they will change as the season progresses.

I Could See The 49er's

Trading up for Luck. The organization can make a compelling argument for making the move. The team has demonstrated improvement and could make further strides with Luck at the helm. Harbaugh could possibly influence this transaction.

Example of Trade

Niners Trade Pick #28, Second Rounder + 1st Round Next Year + Conditional Second Rounder Next Year + Colin Kaepernick for Pick #1 ala Andrew Luck

Along with #28, Second Rounder in 2011 is more than reasonable.

But Harbaugh did trade up to get Kaep

Harbaugh and The 49er's

What were their other options at The QB position: Troy Smith, Alex Smith, David Carr. The 49er’s are winning with Alex Smith as The QB true enough; but the question is whether he or Kap is the long term answer. IMO neither is. Smith is asked to do very little in this offense. Not much is expected of him with the exception of minimizing mistakes; which with this lighter role, he has excelled. Great for the short term; not so much for the long term. Kap was not a first rounder. The Niners didn’t give up much for him. Jimmy Clausen was in a similiar situation with the Panthers. He was a second round pick who did not demonstrate effectiveness at QB; A new coaching regime and a new QB. Kap may not get the opportunity as a starter with this franchise if they opt for Andrew Luck. The NFL can be cruel that way.

What evidence is there that Kaep isn't the future?

Harbaugh and co tried to trade up to get him in the first round but were unable to make a deal. Not to mention a 2nd round pick isn’t a flyer pick those can and should produce quality starters.

All we are saying is that the Niners could very well trade up for Luck

And Have the Ammo to do it. Sure Kap could be good, but I think Luck would be better. The reason they tried to trade up was because they had no clue that Smith was going to do as good as he has. I give him credit but you also have to remember that he isn’t the reason you’ve lost only 1 game. A solid all around team is why your 8-1. Harbaugh would want to trade up for Luck if he likes him enough. Smith can get you to the Playoffs, Luck can win you Superbowls.

Ammo?

Didn’t it cost the Falcons 2 1st a 2nd and 2 4th to move up to #6… Niners don’t have that much to spare. We aren’t that good of a team.

What evidence is there that Kaep isn't the future?

What evidence do you have that he is? I watched him at Nevada; he was a great college QB. When he played in the preseason I noticed indecision and skittishness inside the pocket. Maybe he will become a great NFL QB; but in the meantime I think The 49er’s would well to attempt to get Luck. A QB that flourished under his then college coach Jim Harbaugh.

by ValdezY on Nov 16, 2011 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Evidence

1. Niners drafted him
1b. Niners traded up to get him.
2 3/3 in regular season games
3.

indecision and skittishness inside the pocket
Are we talking about the old Alex Smith or Kaepernick? Because Harbaugh fixed that in Alex.
4. Niners are not 1 QB away from the SB which does not allow the Niners to throw away picks.
5. Harbaugh is the best QB developer in the NFL (Andrew Luck, Alex Smith, Josh Johnson). Kaepernick is extremely smart (37 on wonderlic) stronger arm than Luck and faster than Luck. Combine the two and you have the potential to have one of the best QBs in the NFL.

3/3 in regular season games

That game was a 45-3 blowout in Oct against Tampa Bay in which Kap came in for mop up duty. That was his only action in the regular season. You are truly reaching when you pull out the Wonderlic card! LMAO! Seriously; Kap has potential which is why he was drafted in the second round. However’ Harbaugh has experience with Luck over a longer period of time. IMO, I would say that he would have more confidence with Luck as his QB than Kap.

by ValdezY on Nov 16, 2011 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Harbaugh loves Stanford players thats why we drafted so many last year.

Oh wait… Although the wonderlic is a reach its still better than the oh they have a past history. People said that same thing last year with Gabbert and that because Harbaugh tried to recruit him that he will be a Niner. Except that made more sense because it didn’t force the Niners to trade away their future for a single player that Habraugh created. Next people are going to say that the Niners are going to trade for Josh Johnson because of all of the time he spent with Jim Harbaugh at USD. I believe the only guy we have from Stanford is Chase Beeler and he is on the practice squad. I assume you believe that the Seahawks are going to mortgage their future for Matt Barkley.

I could see that happening to. Harbaugh was great for Stanford. A couple of guys from that team are playing for him now.

Stanford has talent;but so do a lot of other schools from that conference. Cliff Harris the CB from Oregon can cover and return kicks. Harbaugh probably know him like a book, and maybe take a chance on him. Vontaze Burfict; if he should slip in the draft for character concerns I think Harbaugh will take a shot at him. I think The 49er’s are on an uphill swing with Harbaugh. He is competitive, smart, ambitious, and has that killer instinct. Too bad My Hometown Rams don’t have him for a HC. He will continue to make the Niner franchise better.

You know Patrick Willis? Best linebacker in the NFL, sideline to sideline for 60 minutes, you can go ahead and forget running in his direction and it’d probably be a good idea to avoid him altogether if you can Patrick Willis?

Yeah, we cloned Willis and named it Navarro Bowman, and now we have two of him.

We’re running a 4-2 65+% of the time and still completely shutting down the running game.

In his wildest dreams at his full potential, Burfict wouldn’t start on this team.

There's a ton of other teams that have a better shot at trading up for Luck then the Niners

that team’s gonna be in the 20s at least, that’s a lot to give up especially when you have a decent QB and a project for the future already at the position.

Excluding Manning (who really doesn’t count), the Colts have shown no ability to develop QBs.

its impossible to determine that

Manning takes all the snaps in practice. There’s no time to develop anyone and also its obvious the offense is one that only he can run.

Niners obviously are winning now

they don’t need to spend picks on a rookie QB. They have no business getting involved in this. The only reason you’re even tying them to Luck is cuz Harbaugh coached him in college.

Their concerns are best served staying elsewhere.

KC

I’m hoping the Chiefs take a top QB… I wouldn’t want to see them give up the farm, but a reasonable move up for Luck would be awesome

by stagdsp on Nov 15, 2011 9:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Out of who you said

I would think the Seahawks would have an easier time working the trade. If Indy is going to trade the Luck pick, I don’t think they’ll want to keep him in the conference. Cleveland has more firepower, but I think they will weigh that into the decision. The Seahawks could have a top 10 pick, but who even knows what to make of this season? Hopefully they get someone in there other than Carroll, and what new coach wouldn’t want to start it off with a little Luck?

Going against what I just said, why wouldn’t you put Miami on that list?

Try not to take the above message too seriously.

by einman77 on Nov 15, 2011 9:24 PM EST reply actions

Miami

Will get a Top pick however I see them going Landry Jones/Matt Barkely. Miami isn’t as bad as their record states however lack of QB play has killed them the last couple of seasons. If you look at all the other teams at the bottom of the standings only a few need a QB. This means that Barkely could very well fall to them.

The Seahawks could very well trade up however I dont know if they have enough ammo to trade up.

the owner is serious about big names.

Ross wants to add a big name coach and QB to regain interest in the Dolphins. I don’t see him settling for the 2nd best QB. With trades like this it’s more about who’s the most motivated to pull the trigger.

Seattle or KC

Both teams are loaded with young guys, can afford to give up picks. Seattle only really needs a QB and a young DE, KC has the typical franchise 1st round picks (LT, WR, rusher, CB) in place. They can give up a 2013 1st no problem.

Maybe the Redskins too, but they are a little further behind in the rebuild process.

The Seahawks have done well in a quick rebuild from their peak Holmgren years.

I don’t see the 49ers giving up on Smith now that he’s finally performing, plus their pick is going to be way too low for that trade. I don’t see the Browns trading up, and they might give McCoy some help and another year to evaluate him. KC maybe, but I’m not seeing it.

Funny how no one until I mention it says the Browns in the trad scenrio except for the author. Just to state a fact, Holmgren would “NOT” trade UP to get this QB! He will trade back, preferebly twice in the first round, for 2 & 3rd round picks this year. A full on rebuild has been going on in Cleveland, and trading for Luck would put it back a few years, that cannot be afforded.

Colts would be smart to trade him for someone 1,2,3 & 4 this year and 1, 2, & 3 next year. Who could afford to do this and not screw there team over? Jets is really all that I can come up with. Mark Sanchez is a game manager at best, and they might be able to survive pretty much giving up two years worth of quality draft picks.

I doubt that they are satisfied with Colt McCoy and they have two first rounders and one might be in the top 5. You guys have probably the best oppurtunity to trade up and will have to give up the least(Ex. This years two first rounders plus either a 2nd this year or conditional first next year)

Stanford guy Elway has been out to scout Luck. Tebow hasn’t sold anybody that he’s really an NFL passer. I’m not banking on us trading for Luck but it wouldn’t surprise me at all.
