First Mock Draft - Three Rounds

This is the first first mock draft I have put together but I have been following the draft pretty closely for the last several years.  I found it was both fun and changing to come up with three rounds that made sense and also that I had to leave plenty of good players out for lack of room.

I did not mock any trades.  The draft order was determined by current records and any ties in record were sorted by my discretion.

Thanks for looking it over and please leave some feedback if you can.  I am prone to typographical errors so please forgive me if you come across any though I did my best to locate them all.

The mock will be after the jump and each pick has a small explanation following it.

Star-divide

Round One

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck QB Stanford

-This is the pick here.  Its conceivable they do something else but its pretty clear Luck will be a Colt next year.

2. Carolina Panthers: Alshon Jeffery WR South Carolina

-This is a tough pick and good spot for a trade but there are no trades in this mock.  Jeffery has been killed by horrible QB play but I think his size/speed combo is a perfect match for what Newton needs.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil OT Southern California

-The Vikings need help at tackle and Kalil is an elite tackle prospect.  They think about Blackmon for a second, then rush to the podium to pick Kalil.

4. St. Louis Rams: Jonathan Martin OT Stanford

-St. Louis has their quarterback and likely believe they have traded for their top wideout so they move onto the third building block of the passing game, left tackle.

5. Washington Redskins: Matt Barkley QB Southern California

-The Redskins are lucky Luck is in this draft class as it allows Barkly to be available at #5.  They need a quarterback and Barkley is a great fit for Shanahan.

6. Arizona Cardinals: Riely Reiff OT Iowa

-They could probably go corner here but their need at tackle is so great they could take a bit of a risk here with Reiff.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars:  Justin Blackmon WR Oklahoma State

-Gabbert desperately needs some help in Jacksonville and Blackmon is that help.

8. Miami Dolphins: Robert Griffin III QB Baylor

-After this three game tear the Dolphins are hard to figure out.  I still believe they want go quarterback here and they want to flashy.  Griffin is certainly one of the most exciting prospects in this draft.

9. Cleveland Browns:  Morris Claiborne CB Louisiana State

-The Browns have needs on offense but a Haden/Claiborne pairing could be a game changing tandem.

10. Kansas City Chiefs:  Courtney Upshaw OLB Alabama

-Justin Houston may still develop into a good rush linebacker but the Chiefs need to double up here to make sure they find a good option opposite Hali.

11. Seattle Seahawks: Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

-Jones’ stock has fallen some but the Seahawks should still be very happy to get him here.

12. San Diego Chargers: Michael Floyd WR Notre Dame

-Offensive tackle is also a need but Floyd is a much better fit than any tackle available here and its a good idea to keep surrounding Rivers with weapons.

13. Philadelphia Eagles:  Vontaze Burfict ILB Arizona State

-Maybe the Eagles finally invest in their linebacking core.

14. Tampa Bay Bucs:  Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama

-Need and value meet here.

15. Buffalo Bills:  Quinton Coples DE North Carolina

-With Dareus, Williams and Coples the Bills will have the pieces to run a fearsome and unpredictable three man or four man front.

16. Tennessee Titans: David DeCastro G Stanford

-The Titans are now married to their expensive running back so they better start blocking better for him.

17. New York Jets: Trent Richardson RB Alabama

-Rex wants to be a run first team - so there you go big guy.

18. Denver Broncos:  Brandon Thompson DT Clemson

-Just like when you get an elite quarterback you surround him with weapons, you should surround a potential elite edge rusher, Von Miller, with tackles that can free him up to wreck havoc.  If I was Denver I would let this Tebow running offense run its course on the cheap and continue to build a great defensive unit.

19. Cleveland Browns(traded from Atlanta): Zach Brown OLB North Carolina

-Again I know the offense could use some work but I am a big believer in building on strength.  Cleveland could really have something in that young defense if they get Claiborne and Brown in the first round.

20. Dallas Cowboys: Alfonzo Dennard CB Nebraska

-Dallas takes advantage of a strong cornerback class and gets a good one here at 20.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Janoris Jenkins CB Northern Alabama

-Character be darned, Cincinnati ends up with a top 10-15 talent corner at pick 21.

22. New York Giants: Kelechi Osemele G/T Iowa State

-Osemele is a massive talent that can upgrade guard or tackle depending on who returns next year.

23. Cincinnati Bengals(Traded from Oakland): Cordy Glenn G Georgia

-Guard isn't a huge need for Cincinnati but Glenn is a luxury they can afford with two first rounders.

24. Houston Texans: Dontari Poe NT Memphis

-I'm higher on Poe than most and I give him here to the Texans because they need a NT who has a chance to develop the ability to penetrate and I don't see Ta'amu or Chapman having that potential.

25. Chicago Bears: Devon Still DT Penn State

-Chicago's identity is and should remain a fearsome front four that allows their secondary to be free to roam.

26. Detroit Lions: Peter Konz C Wisconsin

-The Lions upgrade next year at right guard and find their long term center.

27. Baltimore Ravens: Manti Te'o ILB Notre Dame

-Need and value meet here with a steal here for Baltimore.

28. New England Patriots(Traded from New Orleans)  Stephon Gilmore CB South Carolina

-Gilmore would be an immediate boost to a weak New England secondary.

29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Adams OT Ohio State

-Adams can start out at right tackle or guard but has the potential to develop into a good left tackle.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Casey Heyward CB Vanderbilt

-There aren't a ton of defensive needs for the 49er defense but they could stand to add some talent at corner.

31. New England Patriots: Brandon Jenkins DE/OLB Florida State

-Jenkins has the size, speed and ability to make an impact in New England's hybrid fronts.

32. Green Bay Packers: Ronnell Lewis OLB/DE Oklahoma

-Lewis could add pressure opposite the long haired monster.

Round Two

1. Indianapolis Colts: Chase Minnifield CB Virginia

-After quarterback, a number one corner is the biggest need for the Colts.   Minnifield is a fantastic fit for their scheme.

2. Carolina Panthers: Jerel Worthy DT Michigan State

-Worthy is a steal here and can play DT in a 4-3 or can play anywhere in a three man front should Carolina move that direction.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Mohamed Sanu WR Rutgers

-With a franchise tackle selected the Vikings can look to acquire more weapons for Ponder.

4. St. Louis Rams: Melvin Ingram DT/DE South Carolina

-Steve Spagnuolo will love having Ingram in his pressure packages where he can line him up all over and can put him at end when expecting the run.

5. Washington Redskins: Luke Kuechly ILB Boston College

-Shanahan could and maybe should go offensive line or wideout here but adding a talent like Kuechly here in the second cannot be passed up.

6. Philadelphia Eagles (Traded from Arizona): Barrett Jones OL Alabama

-Jones at right tackle can allow Herremans to move back to guard and add overall line depth.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Dwayne Allan TE Clemson

-Allan is another weapon for Gabbert and can allow Jacksonville to run alot of two tight end sets with Lewis.  That way they can still be a run first team but add a better passing dynamic.

8. Miami Dolphins: Jarvis Jones OLB Georgia

-This spot may even be a bit low for Jones if he comes out but his inexperience makes him a bit too risky in the first.  He could however make a deadly pair with Wake.

9. Cleveland Browns: Ricky Wagner OT Wisconsin

-Getting a solid right tackle is a need if the Browns want to keep running well.

10. Kansas City Chiefs: Nick Foles QB Arizona

-Foles is a strong pocket passer and could be what the Chiefs are looking for if they move on from Cassel.

11. Seattle Seahawks: Jayron Hosley CB Virginia Tech

-Seattle’s defense has been solid this year but just like San Francisco they could add a corner.

12. San Diego Chargers: Dont'a Hightower ILB Alabama

-Again offensive tackle is a need but Hightower is too good of a value to pass up here.

13. Philadelphia Eagles: Travis Lewis OLB Oklahoma

-The Eagles already picked up a linebacker but they could stand to add another especially if it comes at a value.

14. Tampa Bay Bucs: Juron Criner WR Arizona

-Freeman’s targets haven’t helped him out a ton this year.  Getting Criner would give Freeman a third potential wideout to grow with.

15. Buffalo Bills: Lamar Miller RB Miami

-Spiller doesn’t look like he will ever be close to a feature back and while Jackson has been fantastic this year they cannot continue to grind him to the ground.  If that line can stay healthy next year Jackson and Miller could really wear teams down.

16. Tennessee Titans: Mike Brewster C Ohio State

-The Titans are fortunate Brewster falls this far as they need to fortify their interior with the addition of DeCastro.

17. New York Jets: Matt Reynolds OT/G Brigham Young

-Reynolds is a big nasty run blocker who can be a point of attack guard or a right tackle.

18. Denver Broncos: Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M

-I wanted to give Denver more defense here but I love Tannehill as a prospect too much.  There is a decent chance Tebow is not the long term answer and in that case a starter of the future has to be acquired somehow.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Whitney Mercilus DE Illinois

-Atlanta takes a chance Mercilus’ outstanding college production translates to the pros.

20. Dallas Cowboys: Frank Alexander DE Oklahoma

-Some young blood across from Ware.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Chris Polk RB Washington

-The Bengals would do well to get a good workhorse back like Polk.

22. New York Giants: Sean Spence OLB Miami

-Maybe I’m wrong here but Spence seems like a great fit in the Giants defense.

23. New England Patriots (Traded from Oakland): T.J. McDonald S USC

-The Patriots continue to upgrade their secondary.

24. Houston Texans: Dwight Jones WR North Carolina

-A big tall target to line up opposite Johnson.

25. Chicago Bears: Mark Barron SS Alabama

-Strong safety is vital to the Cover-2 and Barron could solidify the position in Chicago for years.

26. Detroit Lions: Nate Potter  OT Boise State

-I like Potter more than most and I think he is at least a good pass pro guard and at most a potential starting left tackle in a pass happy Lions offense.

37. Baltimore Ravens: Zebrie Standers OT Florida State

-Sanders is one of the last tackles on the board with left tackle potential so the Ravens take a shot here.

28. New Orleans Saints: Vinny Curry DE/OLB Marshall

-Curry is a value here and a shiny new toy for Greg Williams to play with.

29. Pittsburgh Steelers:  Kevin Zeitler G Wisconsin

-The Steelers don’t need to go OL-OL in the first two rounds but they should if they can get Adams and Zeitler.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Nick Toon WR Wisconsin

-San Fran gets a great long term possession receiver opposite Crabtree for their possession based offense.

31. New England Patriots: Devin Taylor DE South Carolina

-Taylor has the physical tools to play on the Pats line and I trust they can coach him up.

32. Green Bay Packers: Kawann  Short DT Purdue

-Short has a strong enough base to line up with Raji in the two man front and can penetrate on passing downs when lined up as a three tech.

 Third Round

1. Indianapolis Colts: Colby Fleener TE Stanford

-Colts may go wideout or guard here but Fleener would offer a security blanket for Luck.  He would also allow for multiple different double tight end looks as the Colts have two receiving tight ends (Clark and Tamme) and a blocking tight end (Eldridge)

2. Chicago Bears (Traded from Carolina): Ryan Miller G Colorado

-Miller is a good value here and fills a need at guard.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Cliff Harris CB Oregon

-The Vikings need talent so they take a shot with the high upside Harris.

4. St. Louis Rams: Marcus Forston DT Miami

-More help for Spag’s defensive front.

5. Washington Redskins: Jeff Fuller WR Texas A&M

-Fuller is a great value in the third and should be a good young target for Barkley

6. Arizona Cardinals: Bruce Irvin DE/OLB West Virginia

-Cardinals try to improve their pass rush here.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jonathan Massaquoi, DE, Troy

-The Jags don’t mind going for small school players and Massaquoi has a ton of potential.

8. Miami Dolphins: Kendall Wright WR Baylor

-Wright is can stretch the field and utilize Griffin’s big arm just like at Baylor.

9. Cleveland Browns: Brian Quick Appalachian State

-Being from a small school Quick could be a little risky but he has the talent to far exceed his draft position and give McCoy two legitimate huge targets with Little.

10. Kansas City Chiefs: Josh Chapman NT Alabama

-Chapman is good value here and you can never have too much depth at a position like NT where there just isn’t enough talent to go around the league.

11. Seattle Seahawks: Andre Branch DE Clemson

-Clemons is an underrated star at end for Seattle and Branch would be a nice compliment on the other side.

12. San Diego Chargers: Jeff Allen OT Illinois

-The Bolts finally find their right tackle here.

13. Philadelphia Eagles: Billy Winn DT Boise State

-Winn can play inside or outside on Philly’s attacking front four.

14. Tampa Bay Bucs: LaMichael Jame RB Oregon

-James is the perfect speed compliment to Blount.

15. Buffalo Bills: Cam Johnson DE/OLB Virginia

-Johnson has the length and burst to fit what the Bills look for in an edge rusher.  They could go CB here but there is so much corner talent still left they may wait till round four.

16. Tennessee Titans: Tydreke Powell, DT, North Carolina

-You can always add talent to at 4-3 DT rotation and Powell is a good fit.

17. New York Jets: Robert Lester FS Alabama

-The Jets could use a FS and Lester is great value here.

18. Denver Broncos: Audie Cole MLB North Carolina

-Cole is an underrated prospect in my opinion and fills a need for Denver.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Levy Adcock OT Oklahoma State

-Atlanta has had some trouble on their line this year and Adcock offers depth and some upside.

20. Dallas Cowboys: Kheeston Randall DT/DE Texas

-Randall has the physical tools to be great but needs a coach like Ryan to turn him into a good player.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Ray Ray Armstrong SS Miami

-The Bengals take a shot on Armstrong here.

22. New York Giants: Ryan Broyles WR Oklahoma

-Wide receiver depth is a need for the Giants and they can afford to wait on Broyles to get healthy if they need to.

23. Oakland Raiders: (Supplemental Pick – Pryor)

24. Houston Texans: Shea McClellin DE/OLB Boise State

-More talent for their surprisingly very good new 3-4 defense.

25. Chicago Bears: Leonard Johnson, CB, Iowa State

-Johsnon has been impressive this year and would add depth to the Bears’ secondary.

26. Detroit Lions: DeQuan Menzie, CB, Alabama

-Menzie is another riser and fills a need for Detroit.

37. Baltimore Ravens: William Vlachos C Alabama

-He may never be a star but Vlachos is tough and experienced and could start for a long time.

28. New Orleans Saints: Coryell Judie CB Texas A&M

-Brees puts up points and so the Saints see alot of pass attempts.  Corner depth and talent is always needed when you play those kind of games.

29. Pittsburgh Steelers: Markelle Martin FS Oklahoma State

-Clark and Polamalu are both great players but are now on the wrong side of thirty and the Steelers are always great at getting replacements for starts before they are needed.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Orson Charles TE Georgia

-Harbaugh loves his tight ends and he gets a good one here.

 31. New England Patriots: T.Y. Hilton WR Florida International

-New England’s receiving core lacks a vertical threat that can stretch the defense vertically.  Hilton can be that guy.

32. Green Bay Packers: Marvin McNutt WR Iowa

-Value and another young weapon for Rodgers - sounds like the Packers right?

I don't like the Chiefs draft

IMHO, there’s a 0% chance that KC drafts an OLB this year.

and Foles is not an upgrade for the Chiefs at QB

IF the above scenario played out, I’d hope for:
1) Vontaze Burfict ILB or David DeCastro G
2) T.J. McDonald S or Matt Reynolds OT/G
3) Josh Chapman NT or Robert Lester FS

by stagdsp on Nov 22, 2011 12:25 PM EST reply actions

0% chance for an OLB?

You guys have like 12 total sacks and its painfully obvious that without another legit pass rusher opposite of Hali he’s getting doubled up all game. If your not pressuring QB’s in a 3-4 OLB should be a priority

Still doubt Tebow?

Not sure who rec'd you but it's a scheme issue not player issue

We rarely blitz, rarely send the SOLB after the QB. If we are in the base set(and this has happened a lot in subpackages as well this year) we send the Dline/WOLB and drop the SOLB into coverage. RDE has been a weak spot this year(not sure why Dorsey disappeared) however it is not because of the SOLB play, it is the scheme.

Not sure who rec’d that.

Jones(not a fan but we need improved QB play)
Reynolds
Chapman

BAMF is right

KC drafted Houston, Sheffield and Miller in the past 2 years, and they like Studebaker

Houston has the potential to be a stud, and has gradually improved this season.

Vs NE, when KC actually blitzed, they got 3 sacks in the first half… they can generate pressure with the existing personnel, but they need to send Houston more, and they need better execution, of course

by stagdsp on Nov 22, 2011 7:20 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

well then

that’s a pretty crappy scheme. I don’t see why you’d rush 2 5 techs, a NT, and only one player truly equipped to rush the edge. I hate to bad mouth it too much without watching a lot of your games (only caught our game and your game against the Chargers) but that sounds like a terrible way to rush the passer from a 3-4.

Still doubt Tebow?

by DBroncs1414 on Nov 22, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Well it's the same scheme that won the Pats their superbowls

Or rather was ran when the Pats won the superbowls, RC has run it wherever he has been. It might have ran it’s course in the NFL however as stag pointed out we have drafted pass rushers to add depth including Justin Houston last year.

Not many teams run a base 2 gap system any longer in the NFL due to the fact it requires getting pressure from the front 3 and it is very hard to find a player who can 2 gap to stop the run but also push the pocket back and create pressure.

Which is why I'd hate to bad mouth it

I’m a big Crennel fan as a DC, but on paper it sounds illogical. Maybe RC proves me wrong but I can’t help but scratch my head.

If this system was racking up the sacks I’d bite my tongue but there’s been a lack of sacks from your D, especially when you consider you have a great pass rusher in Hali.

Still doubt Tebow?

by DBroncs1414 on Nov 23, 2011 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure

but I think one reason they aren’t blitzing as much is because they don’t want to isolate their crappy safeties with Berry out. When you’ve got no one who can cover you either over blitz or under blitz. Both have their risks. As you can see, KC is under blitzing.

There are a lot of needs for KC. But without ball control in your offense (I realize everyone is hurt) your defense is going to suck. Do I think it should be like that? No. Not with highly conditioned professional athletes, but it is what it is. KC has to improve on the offensive line to be able to control the ball and not go 3 and out 4 straight possessions and not just score on the 5th. When Cassel has time to throw, he is just fine just like all QBs. When he gets pressure (50% of passing plays is a little high, but I would guess it’s close) he isn’t nearly as good like all QBs. The Chiefs have to sure up the OLine which was one of their strengths in years past.

If I’m KC FO, I go Oline back to back as long as their is talent available and go for D on rounds 3/4. There are a lot of needs. But teams who win Super Bowls always seem to have strong OLines.

Another good way of masking sub-par cover

is to blitz more so the QB doesn’t have time to let his WR’s burn your coverage. There’s merits in both arguments. I’m not the biggest fan of the 3-4, but I just don’t see how with the passing games of today, you can seriously rush 1 good pass rusher and essential 3 DT’s. If anything, maybe you guys should pull the NT or a 5 tech out, put an extra DB in coverage, then have, say Dorsey, Jackson (but even he kinda sucks), Hali, and Houston rush the passer. That way you still only have 4 guys rushing and 7 in coverage, but those 4 rushing have a better chance of getting pressure then the 4 you’ve been rushing.

I haven’t really watched your pass rush in the games of yours I watched (I forgot watched the Pats game as well) but next time I’ll look to see this.

Still doubt Tebow?

by DBroncs1414 on Nov 23, 2011 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

It's hard to get pressure if the Dline does not hold up their assignments/collapse the pocket

Last year the defense started to work very well but Dorsey has disappeared this year, Berry is out, and we have been very predictable. However it’s as I said, even if we got Upshaw or some other ‘top pass rusher’(like Houston) we still do not bring the SOLB that often, it is not a high need IMO. I could see a late round pick up just to keep churning talent but we have bigger needs at QB

Is it possible

and this is just conjecture: could RC not be rushing to OLB’s because he doesn’t have a lot of trust in their pass rushing abilities?

Still doubt Tebow?

AHHHHHHHHHH WALL OF HTML!

That being said….while I like Osemele, I dunno if he should go that high. He seems way too much like Benjamin Ijalana to me. Much rather take Cordy Glenn.

Don’t like Sean Spence, mainly cause he’s a small, high motor type dude. We already have that in Greg Jones. I’ll take Mark Barron or TJ McDonald instead in the 2nd.

3rd pick…perfect. I love Broyles.

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

Out of curiosity what were your objections to Ijalana. He looked very good in the limited playtime he had before he tore his ACL

by TrueBlue87 on Nov 22, 2011 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Because they both have African sounding names and are OG/T hybrids from small schools? I don’t see how that makes either bad though.

Ijalana looked pretty good and should stick long term at RT should he stay healthy.

nothing against Ijalana right now. But as a prospect I didn't have a 1st round grade on him.

They both seem similar, decent bulk (not great), but really good athleticism and strong. They both aren’t overly great in pass protection, though not bad….and its because of poor footwork. That’s the only reason.

only got to see a half of him in real action at LT

but he was taking it to Adrian Clayborn before he got hurt.

also Spence would instantly be the fasted LBeezer on the team

so he’s very much unlike Greg Jones, who’s a tortoise.

I think WILL is filled

By Jacquian Williams and Paysinger, plus the current starter Boley.

Plus, the Giants have a history of drafting large LBs. Spence is 5-11. Greg Jones is small, but he’s a value pick in the 6th round.

Also loved Broyles in the 3rd. Osemele is a good thought, position potential is good even if some disagree with the particular player.

Perfect draft for Baltimore

3 biggest needs filled. Te’o would be a great selection.

Flacco has to trust his receivers to make catches, but shouldn’t throw towards coverage. He needs to attack deep more often, but shouldn’t hold onto the ball so long. He needs to show more awareness in the pocket and move to extend plays, but nothing good comes of him leaving the pocket. He should run with the ball if nobody’s open, but he definitely can’t run with the ball.

Flacco should have the awareness of Roethlisberger, the elusiveness of Vick, the control of the offense of Manning, the leadership of Brady, the accuracy of Brees, and the arm strength of … Flacco? - Ampallang

completely agree with Malor. This would be an awesome draft. Would consider Martin in the 3rd, but either way I would be happy and C is more of an immediate need. Great job.

On Ed Reed:

"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."

Jags

My only actual issue with your picks is TE in the second. The Jags just gave Marcedes Lewis a big contract. No good reason to spend a second on anther one.

Personally, I would go Claiborne, Dwight Jones, Kendall Wright based on how things fall in this draft

Getting a first round talent in the 2nd would be awesome. Why not run some more 2 TE sets like New England. And Zach Miller can’t seem to stay on the field, so why not?

not at the stage of building this roster where they can go out and make a luxury pick.
Get some WRs. replace Mathis. Then you can think about luxury picks. Jones is a late first round talent IMO, so CLaiborn Jones and Wright get you first round talent in the first and second and second round talent in the 3rd, and it make sense for a team looking to build their roster.

Colts

With the way the board falls I’d rather see:

1st: Luck – if Peyton’s not healthy enough
2nd: Sanu – Need a WR with one of the first two picks
3rd: Either Lester or Judie. Like both players.

by BlueVol03 on Nov 22, 2011 12:41 PM EST reply actions

I think Luck is the pick one way or another. With three neck surgeries, I think Peyton only has 2 years left in the tank at a high level, giving Luck the perfect time to mature. I like Sanu only if Minnifield isn’t there. The secondary is putrid and desperately needs help and Minnifield fits like a glove. I don’t like the Fleener pick. I think Dallas is released at the end of the year and Tamme takes over with Eldridge as blocking and McNeil as a relief. They may go TE in a later round, but not 3. I think here they take a WR like Broyles or McNutt who really fit what the Colts do.

I highly doubt you see Panthers go WR with the number 2 pick. The need for them is defense and then OT.

I would definitely say Matt Kalil in the 1st and Jerel Worthy in the 2nd, if we are not trading in the mock obviously.

But I doubt they go MLB in the 3rd after doing the same thing last year. If they go for a Mike, I would wager it would be early for one of the studs.

Yes, sound reasoning in this mock for Denver...

I don’t think we fall as far as 18th but it’s a legit possibility. I also agree that while nobody has solidified the MLB position, we probably go RT or CB before we look for another Mike. I can also see Elway falling in love with Tannehill.

I think you'd be surprised at how likely drafting that low is for us

after the Chargers D (ranked 13th) we won’t face a D ranked higher then 19. we could easily pick up 3-4 more wins and draft in the late teens.

And yeah, Tannehill is probably what Elway’s looking for. He’s got the mobility, arm and he probably won’t be ready for a year or 2, so Elway could just play it off and say “Tebow’s in a competition” for a season or 2 and once Tannehill is ready just trade him, if anyone would take him.

Still doubt Tebow?

by DBroncs1414 on Nov 23, 2011 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised at all...

My guess is we pick more in the 12-15 range than the 15-18 range but anything’s possible given that 8-8 could win the AFC West. We have a gimme win left, a probable win, a couple likely losses, and a couple maybes.

Eagles Linebackers

So despite the fact that everyone talks bad about Andy Reid not investing in his linebacking corps, in fact over the past few years he has drafted 3 in the first two rounds. As per Reuben Frank’s article from two days ago, “Since 1999, they’ve drafted three linebackers in the first two rounds. But league-wide, 96 linebackers have been taken in the first two rounds since 1999, which comes out to exactly three per team. So they’re average.”

This goes along with the “”http://www.thegoodphight.com/2011/11/21/2485197/phillies-citizens-bank-park-not-a-hitters-haven" >Citizens Bank is a Bandbox" and the “Philly fans are the worst fans ever” memes.

Buffalo Bills

DE Quinton Coples
- CB Dennard, Jenkins, or Gilmore
- DE/OLB Brandon Jenkins

RB Lamar Miller
- NO, NO, NO, NO
- CB or pass-rushing DE/OLB (Vinny Curry, Bruce Irvin)

DE/OLB Cam Johnson
- CB or pass-rushing DE/OLB

Solid choices for the Bills in rounds #1 and #3, but there is zero chance that the Bills will draft a RB in the top three rounds.

Best case scenario for the first three is two CBs and one pass-rushing DE/OLB

Bucs

I love the Kirpatrick and James picks in rounds 1 and 3. I don’t like the 2nd round pick at all. We aren’t taking another receiver unless it is one of the top receivers in the draft falling to us. And even then, we probably still take CB or LB.

Absolutely agree with you

I don’t think the Bucs will look for a WR in the second- we’ve got a pretty good stable of them already, so unless it’s a guaranteed home run it’s not happening. After CB, our most pressing needs are LB and RT. Sean Spence, Nate Potter, Matt Reynolds, even Mark Barron would make more sense for their needs here.

Very nice work otherwise- you absolutely nailed it with Kirkpatrick in the 1st and James in the 3rd.

Vikings

I think there should be more emphasis on the defense. I like the Kalil pick in the first, but I would rather see LB, DB or DT addressed in the second. Especially since Fuller and McNutt would be there in the 3rd.

Hightower and Kuechly would be hard to pass in the 2nd.

I have to agree with NMVike

No chance the Vikings pass on Kuechly or Ta’amu

Assuming Ta’aumu is gone then I would go with Luke in the second and Markelle Martin or Kendall Wright in the 3rd. Probably Martin because the secondary is atrocious.

No thanks to Harris as well since he barely weights 180. The Vikings already have a guy his size in Marcus Sherels who they like. They will draft bigger corners if they draft any at all IMHO.

Herremans is really good

I think if anything they focus on developing lower draft picks in order to bolster the line. Ole Howard Mudd had tons of success in Indy doing that.

I think Burfict is too inconsistent. I’d love to see Te’O, quite frankly. But any talent that isn’t a project will do nothing but help this terrible group.

I would not pass on Justin Blackmon for The Rams . I get The O-Line needs; but I think playmakers for Bradford are a necessity. Round Two; Ingram is a great talent but a bigger need is RB Chris Polk. Third Round: I can see a DT but not Forston. Slyvester Williams is bigger , more athletic, and productive. IMO Williams is a better prospect than Poe who you have slotted in the first roun for Houston.

When choosing for the Rams

Consider that Spags won’t be here next year. He might but it’s looking unlikely. Fair or not our FO will look different too. Like Valdez said I like Blackmon more than Martin, but if Kalil would still be available it’s looking like we’d need to end the Jason Smith era and go with yet another tackle, just not Martin, if we’re choosing 4th and Kalil’s gone, we’d be better off targeting WR, CB, or DT.
In the second, we absolutely can’t afford to go with another DE. Too many years of not addressing the draft well have resulted in too many years of needing help at too many positions. Can’t spend top picks on the same position like that with so many other needs.
If we went OT and say WR or DB in the 1st and 2nd rounds then we wouldn’t pass up on Ta’amu for Forston, or at least I would hope not. He may project better as a NG, but his value would far outweigh Forston at that pick.

Good rep here

Blackmon please. Kalil and Martin are possibilities. DE there would be so painful, I’d probably end up punching a stranger in the mouth. However, that 2nd could be OLB, RB, DT (Kawaan Short), CB. We need a high end CB, RBotF, pure DT, any talent at OLB, a starter OT, a #1 WR (Lloyd’s on a one year contract right now, and Bradford could use a partner), and wouldn’t be surprised to get a TE, OG, C. As far as Spags leaving, I’d say TST is still divided (as I’m proof in wanting him to stay [for Bradford’s sake]).

Broncos

I like the Thompson and Tannehill picks, but Cole shouldn’t be the pick in the third. Denver needs a corner, OT, and RB and they just drafted Nate Irving last year so just to keep that in mind for your next mock.

Some guys that would fit the bill:

Shaun Prater, CB, Iowa
Nate Potter, G/OT, Boise State
Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
LaMichael James, RB, Oregon
Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
Levy Adcock, OT, Oklahoma State
Chris Polk, RB, Washington
Coryell Judie, CB, Texas A&M
Andrew Datko, OT, Florida State

by nacaboose on Nov 23, 2011 11:59 AM EST reply actions

Prater hasn't played very well this year

I think the decline in safety play (Iowa had two 3 year starters graduate) has exposed him a bit. He gets caught peeking in the backfield and misses tackles too much, at least so far this year.

Browns

Wow, someone finally see’s it my way! Yes, the offense needs more weapons, and an upgrade on the offensive line. Though the defense isn’t really that far away from having all it’s starters in place (need better backups for sure), and building up on defense in this division is a must!

I absolutely love the 1st & 2nd rouind picks, 3rd round I would double dip here on O line, or try to move back into the prior round and get two linemen there. The rest of the picks should be need/BPP and depth. I would then actually go into the FA market & get my #1 WR (we’ve got the $$$), and maybe a quality hybrid WR/HB type.
