Rock out with your mock draft out: Rob Staton
The main reason behind doing the mock draft spotlight is to showcase draft sites and writers that I enjoy. One of my absolute favorite draft people is Rob Staton of Seahawks Draft Blog. He as thoughtful and intelligent as anyone around.
Among other things, he was far ahead of the curve on Wisconsin center Peter Konz and Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley. Both are those players are featured in his latest mock draft.
Barkley is mocked fifth overall to the Washington Redskins and Konz is sent to the New England Patriots at No. 24. Both are sensible.
Besides being a Seahawks Draft Blog fanboy, I wanted to point out this mock because it actually takes some chances. Most mocks right now are pretty vanilla with the same players being slotted in the same areas.
With his mock, Staton makes some bold projections on players like North Carolina wide receiver Dwight Jones and linebacker Kevin Reddick. He even works in current hot draft prospect Oday Aboushi, the left tackle from Virginia.
So check out his mock here and holler at Rob in the comments on his site. We may try to put out a mock here this week or next week.

Choke/Clutch is the fetishization of the small sample size.

Oh, crap, forgot to link it in there. Sorry about that.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
its all good
I was just being lazy, a quick google search and I got there quickly
Still doubt Tebow?
little early right now to have Jones so high
while i like the positional selection for the Jags, I am preferring CLaiborne in the 1st and WR like Sanu or Kendall Wright or Jones in the second
Never mind I found it
I love Lamar Miller, but for me 18’s a little early. I’d rather see Jenkins or Kirkpatrick there
Still doubt Tebow?
Jags
Beginning to think new regime, if there is one, will draft a QB round one and either make Gabbert a 4 million a year back up or try and trade him to someone who doesn’t have a young QB
no Alshon Jeffrey? That's a little hilarious, obviously dude's just looking at production
I agree Dwight Jones should be a first rounder, but he’s not better then Jeffrey.
I don’t like Burfict to the Giants. He’s a nipplehead and I doubt he’s gonna be taken by anyone in the first round
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Agree with both your points
Jones could go end of the 1st, but there’s nothing about him that makes him better than Jeffery. And then Jeffery falls completely out of the 1st round? That’s a bit extreme.
I’m beginning to see what people are talking about wit Burfict. I watched Az St play few days ago, Burfict only gives effort on half of the plays and makes ridiculous personal fouls. He got benched.
Montee Ball for Heisman.
Tajh Boyd and Dre' Ellington are the future.

Agreed on Burfict
I mocked him at 18 in my last mock, but after watching the Cal game… I wouldn’t touch him in any of the 7 rounds. He’s more detrimental then beneficial to his team
Still doubt Tebow?
No Upshaw? or did I miss that?
Not crazy about Barron either. Upshaw seems to be much more of a first round talent than Barron.

ravens
Awesome pick for us. Would love Te’o.
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
I like the Kalil pick
Even though we need defense if Kalil’s available we snag him

If Pats got Konz and Floyd...
…I would be exceptionally happy. Although I feel like Ben Jones is more of a Patriots-type center and could be nabbed late 2nd.
Define a Patriots type center. I’m sincerely asking that for future reference (and know that you know your stuff).
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Maybe I should have said "prospect"...
…but when you compare him to other centers, you see some traits. Belichick wants a monster center to deal with opposing nose and defensive tackles and he realizes that a shorter, sub-300 lb center isn’t the best option anymore (especially after facing Mangold), so that eliminates Molk. He wants a line leader, and Konz, Brewster, and Jones all fit the bill. I feel like the biggest knock on Jones is his lack of technical expertise, while Brewster is a lot more polished- but that means a little less upside.
Belichick like drafting players to the line who are dominant at the college level, despite their lack of technical prowess, because that’s an automatic room for improvement that you know they’ll get from Dante Scarneccia (their O-Line coach). So if player A and player B are performing just as well, but player B is less polished, by taking player B and teaching him, he’ll develop beyond player A- and there is typically a premium in the draft for either physical specimens (Konz), or well polished players (Brewster), and I feel like Jones will drop because of that.
Jones seems like a value pick who can get immediate improvement with a Patriots S&C team, as well as Scar’s coaching. Add in his size, quickness, level of venom, experience, and his leadership on the line and it seems like he’s a solid fit for the line.
I’ll steal Rob Rang’s words here, because I totally agree with him:
Could gain more explosiveness in his initial punch or when helping others… for the drive block, comes out lunging, at times, and doesn’t have the balance to correct himself and recover. A bit inconsistent with his hand placement, as well, getting too low and leaving himself vulnerable to effective swim moves…He struggles a bit re-directing against moving targets and too often gets his hands outside of the pads (though he’s rarely called for holding).
I feel like all of those critiques are coachable fixes based upon technique and it seems as if Jones has the mentality to fix those issues. He can be dominant, but he’d be a solid 2nd round work in progress.
Beyond that, if I had to describe a Patriots center:
Line leader, pivot who is expected not only stone wall defensive/nose tackles 1v1, but should be able to pick up blitzes in the passing game. In the running game, the guards usually pull, but the center needs to get a great initial push and get to the second level and take on the linebackers.
I believe that Brewster fits that mold, too, but I feel like Jones might have more upside. Not sure where Konz falls into play- and I feel like his value might be inflated due to being the first center on the board.

I like the rationale behind Landry Jones
Though I think he’ll go in the first to some QB strapped team.
I like Mercilus to Buffalo. Though I could see Buffalo taking a flyer on Ryan Tannehill to groom behind Fitzpatrick.
The Tebow logic is a bit odd. I think Elway has to make a decision this off-season. If the reports that Elway and Fox don’t want Tebow are true, the longer they stick with him (eg: next season) the harder a divorce will be.
Starting the official Buffalo "Draft a Pass Rusher in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
I think you may be right about Jones getting into the first. But as someone who reads that site often, the writer has been down on Jones since the preseason.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Yup
From August:
A lot of people are particularly high on Jones, but I’m still not completely convinced. He’s got the physical tools but plays completely within himself allowing a productive scheme to do the talking. Sam Bradford dominated in this scheme but still shone through it, whilst Jones has coasted along riding it’s coat tails.

Not seeing the Bucs go G in the first
We need a guard, but we have so many other priorities on defense. Even on offense we need a RT way more than LG. I’d take Kirpatrick in this spot.
Yugly.
That’s why I like it. Things in the draft are never how we think they’ll be. What fun is it if everyone has the same players in a mock? Rob changes it around and if you follow his site, you’ll know why those players aren’t in. Do I agree with it all? Nope. But it’s nice that someone is willing to be a contrary take.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
Yeah there's that too
It’s better than seeing the same thing over and over again. I’d love to see someone come up with an argument against Luck going 1/1.
Rob also called Clausen a 2nd-round QB
at a time when there was a debate whether he should go before Bradford and called Jimmy Smith a 1st-round CB before anybody knew who the guy was.
He doesn’t get everything right, but the guy does have some serious chops.
