"Bowl Season Kick-Off" 2012 Mock Draft (1st round)

This is the first round of my revised 2012 mock draft. The draft order is the one that has been posted on this site by Dan Kadar.

Star-divide

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Stanford Do I even need to explain this pick? The only reason the Colts win is because of Manning. Unfortunately, he is getting older and will be especially vulnerable to injury in the coming years so it is definitely time to find his replacement. It couldn't have come at a better time either because Andrew Luck is considered the top quarterback prospect since Manning.

2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, Offensive Tackle, Southern California The Rams have struggled in almost every position this year. They could easily go cornerback or receiver with this pick, but they need to rally their team around Sam Bradford. If Bradford is not playing because of injury, that's kind of hard to do. Matt Kalil is the best offensive tackle prospect since Jake Long and might be the most surefire player in the draft to have a great pro career. Give Bradford time in the pocket, good things will happen.

3. Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne, Cornerback, LSU Claiborne does not posses the pure athleticism and cover skills that his predecessor Patrick Peterson has, but he is certainly a top 5 worthy pick. The Vikings secondary is pretty old and has performed like the 26th ranked pass defense. A young player with limitless upside would provide a key piece to the Vikings which is a team entering the rebuilding process.

4. Carolina Panthers - Justin Blackmon, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State Steve Smith is putting together an amazing season, but he is getting older. If Cam Newton is to succeed in the future, he needs a young receiver with whom he can grow as a player. Blackmon is far and away the best receiver in the draft and is one of the best receiver of the 2000s so far. He is dangerous everywhere on the field and if he can fix his fumbling issue, he is destined to be a pro bowler in the NFL.

5. Washington Redskins - Matt Barkley, Quarterback, Southern California Washington needs to do some major rebuilding through the draft and free agency if they want to compete in a division that has some of the best talent around the NFL. It all starts with the quarterback and Barkley is a true talent. He finished the season stronger than any other player in college football and could have success if put into the right scheme in the NFL. He can make all of the throws and is dead accurate. He does not have the mobility of RG3, but that also means he is not as prone to injury...something a team like the Redskins cannot afford.

6. Cleveland Browns - Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Baylor The Colt McCoy experiment has not panned out the way Cleveland fans had hoped. You just have to keep in mind, however, that he was a third round pick. He may have been a legendary college player, but that does not mean he will translate those accolades to the professional level. Having a QB like RG3 would propel this team to a place it has not been in a while. Griffin shown this year that he is the most efficient quarterback in college football. Having a player who automatically makes the Browns a contender, and a backup that many teams would be thankful to start, is the first ingredient in the recipe for success.

7. Miami Dolphins - Jonathan Martin, Offensive Tackle, Stanford Unless the Dolphins trade up, I believe that they will wait until the second round to draft a quarterback. Their offensive line has played poorly with the exception of Jake Long. Getting another top-tier tackle to play on the right side would not only protect whatever QB may be playing in South Beach for years to come, but will also significantly help the Phins developing running game.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Dwight Jones, Wide Receiver, North Carolina The Jag's have one of the worst receiving corps' that I've ever seen. Many people want them to go QB here, but it is unfair to judge Gabbert this year because not only did he enter the league during a lockout with limited training time, but he has NO ONE to throw to. Mercedes Lewis is the leading receiver with less than 500 yards, which is unacceptable. Dwight Jones is ranked ahead of Alshon Jeffery on my board because they both bring similar things to the table, but Jones is more refined, is faster, and runs better routes. Having a big playmaking receiver like Jones would give the Jags a weapon that would make their passing game much less laughable.

9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Dre Kirkpatrick, Cornerback, Alabama The Bucs biggest position of need is cornerback. Ronde Barber is old and aside from Aqib Talib, there is no depth at the position. Dre Kirkpatrick is a very good cover corner who can deliver a blow. Being a starting cornerback in the SEC is the closest thing to being one in the NFL. Having a good all around corner like Kirk will surely improve the Bucs underwhelming secondary.

10. Kansas City Chiefs - Riley Reiff, Offensive Tackle, Iowa The Chiefs have a major problem at the tackle position. They released Jared Gaither and have no depth to take his place. They need to draft a young, powerful tackle who will clear some lanes for Jamaal Charles and block for whoever the QB is there next year. Reiff is considered by some to be more developed than Jonathan Martin, but he is a bit light for a tackle so that is what keeps him the third ranked OT in this mock. Having a good weigh in at the combine could move him up a few spots, however.

11. Philadelphia Eagles - Luke Kuechly, Inside Linebacker, Boston College I know the Eagles don't like drafting linebackers in the first round, but Kuechly might be too perfect to pass on. If they can get just one big time run stuffing stud in their linebacking core, the Eagles defense would improve by a lot. Kuechly is a tackle machine, racking up 191 total tackles this season and coming just shy of the career mark. He has great lateral movement and his insanely high motor allows him to get to the ball carrier no matter what obstacle may lay in his way.

12. Buffalo Bills - Alshon Jeffery, Wide Receiver, South Carolina Jeffery may have hurt his stock more than anyone this season, so it is amazing that he is still a first round pick. What will put him in this position is solely his athleticism and his career stats. He is not fast whatsoever, but he is a true deep threat who can improve a receiving core as long as he has someone who can throw him a catchable ball.

13. Arizona Cardinals - David DeCastro, Offensive Guard, Stanford DeCastro is arguably the second best offensive lineman in this draft, but there is a lower need for interior linemen in the first round nowadays. The Cardinals, however, have problems all around their offensive line and having a superb run blocker who can pave the way for budding running back Chris Wells along with a pass blocker for the developmental Kevin Kolb could actually make this team a playoff contender in a weak division.

14. Seattle Seahawks - Zach Brown, Outside Linebacker, North Carolina
The Seahawks are a team on the rise, and if they can figure out their QB situation, they can really be a good team. I don't think Zach Brown can play QB, but he is the best player available who also fills a need. The hawks run a very strange defensive scheme that combines the 34 and 4-3 defenses. Having a guy like Brown who can play in both is a major boost.

15. San Diego Chargers - Courtney Upshaw, 34 OLB, Alabama Upshaw is a player whom you don't see very often. He can play any linebacker position a team asks of him, in any scheme, and also play defensive end. He can be explosive at times, but he is just a solid all around player. The Chargers linebacking core is getting old and having a guy who can become a starter in a year or maybe immediately is great, especially when you have someone like Shaun Phillips opposite him.

16. Dallas Cowboys - Janoris Jenkins, Cornerback, North Alabama/Florida Jenkins is a quandary. He possesses top 10 skills, but his attitude and off the field history moves him back a few spots. The Cowboys have had the most unsure and inconsistent secondary over the past couple of years. Janoris Jenkins could finally sure up the #2 or maybe even #1 spot in time and make this team a better contender than they already are.

17. Tennessee Titans - Alfonzo Dennard, Cornerback, Nebraska
Dennard is another guy who finished his final season on the right foot. He shut down Marvin McNutt and has been on the rise. I was going to mock Trent Richardson here because of the Titans unsure situation with Chris Johnson, but then I read Cortland Finnegan's comments on whether he will be back next year. He said that him and the Titans are very far apart in contract talks and he will probably be on another team next season. Dennard is a guy who can step in and fill that #1 role immediately. He is not superb in any one aspect, but his instincts, fundamentals, and skill set are exactly what teams look for in draftees.

18. New York Giants - Trent Richardson, Running Back, Alabama
Trent Richardson falls pretty far in my draft. He is ranked #6 on my big board, but a combination of a low desire to draft running backs early and teams that aren't really looking for one, he falls pretty far. The G Men luck out grab him. Ahmad Bradshaw has not had a great year, but you have to cut him some slack for being injured. Brandon Jacobs is washed up though. He is no longer a reliable back. The Giants have the 32nd ranked rushing attack. Having a player as exciting and prospective as Trent Richardson could finally give this team that missing puzzle piece to propel them back into Super Bowl contention.

19. Chicago Bears - Michael Floyd, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
I debated giving da Bears Coples, but then I realized, "Hey, you've got Jay Cutler at quarterback, but he has no true #1 receiver to throw to".Michael Floyd would finally fill that need and improve an offense that is missing some pieces. Matt Forte is relied on in the receiving game, but his situation in unclear and he may not be back next year. Johnny Knox is good, but he is not a true #1. Michael Floyd has been the best offensive player on Notre Dame for the past couple of years and provides a big bodied, number 1 receiver for Jay Cutler.
20. Cincinnati Bengals - Quinton Coples, Defensive End, North Carolina
It's not the biggest position of need, but at this point, Coples is the best value in the draft. Once considered a top 3 pick, Coples dropped off a bit after a lack luster season. However, he has still shown he can produce. He fought off a ton of double teams and made an impact. Coples would improve an already very good defense.

21. Cincinnati Bengals - Lamar Miller, Running Back, Miami
Miller is a very talented running back who can step in and fill an aging and declining Cedric Benson's shoes. Miller has not taken a beating as he is only a sophomore, and he has everything you could want in a running back, minus the blocking skills.

22. Cleveland Browns - Whitney Mercilus, Defensive End, Illinois
The Browns need an explosive pass rusher opposite Jabaal Sheard. Mercilus put together a great season and is without a doubt a first round pick.

23. New York Jets - Barrett Jones, Offensive Guard/Offensive Tackle, Alabama
The Jets have had poor play from their right tackle, Wayne Hunter, all year. He is not meant to be a starter, but the Jets can't sit him because they have no depth behind him. Barrett Jones had lit up defenders this year and is a great offensive line prospect. Maybe he can help with the development of Sanchez and the rebirth of the Ground n Pound.

24. Denver Broncos - David Wilson, Running Back, Virginia Tech
David Wilson is a great running back who draws comparisons to Walter Payton. Willis McGahee is turning 32 next season and there is no other starting caliber running back on a team that has rushed over 50 times in a game twice this season.

25. Detroit Lions - Peter Konz, Offensive Center, Wisconsin
The Center position has been the weakest link on the Lions offensive line this year. Having a great player like Konz who comes out of Lineman U would help keep Stafford off of IR and would also help Mikel Leshoure/Kevin Smith have an easier time pounding the rock.

26. New England Patriots - Chase Minnifield, Cornerback, Virginia
Behind a struggling Devon McCourty, there is little depth for the Patriots at cornerback. Minnifield is a good cover corner who played great all year except for the game against Virgnia Tech.

27. San Francisco 49ers - Mike Adams, Offensive Tackle, Ohio State
The 49ers have done a poor job in the pass blocking department and having a big fatty like Adams solidifying the right side would drastically improve what is without a doubt the most boring offense in the league.

28. New England Patriots - Mark Barron, Safety, Alabama
Yet another Alabama player drafted. The Pats biggest position of need is Safety and Barron is a starting caliber safety. He is good in pass protection, but excels against the run. The Pats have the worst defense in the league and having a threat that can play deep or in the box would sure fill some holes.

29. Houston Texans - Alameda Ta’amu, Nose Tackle, Washington
Ta'amu is projected by some to be a 4-3 defensive tackle, and other see him as a 34 nose. The reality is, he is both. He is not a true defensive tackle or nose guard, but isn't that exactly what Wade Phillips wants? Isn't that what he did with Jay Ratliff in Dallas? Seems like a perfect fit to me.

30. Baltimore Ravens - Dont’a Hightower, Inside Linebacker, Alabama
Yet ANOTHER Bama player in round one! Hightower isn't a perfect linebacker, but he is a great prospect with a high ceiling. He has drawn a ton of comparisons to Ray Lewis so this may end up being a dream pickup for the Ravens.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers - Devon Still, Defensive Tackle, Penn State
Ziggy Hood is looking a bit like a bust, Aaron Smith will likely retire, and Brett Kiesel is aging. Devon Still is a great fit as a 34 defensive end who can plug up a gap and rush the passer when needed. When don't the Steelers go defense?

32. Green Bay Packers - Brandon Jenkins, 34 OLB, Florida State Brandon Jenkins had a down year, but there is no denying he has pass rushing talent. Having him lined up across from Clay Matthews could be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

Panthers.........

I personally do not like the Panthers drafting a WR with all these defensive products in this draft.

BPA

and fills a need. Blackmon is too good to pass up on. Cam Newton likes to throw deep right? Well…here’s a receiver who does his work best 30 yards downfield.

Its possible

there are teams that would give a lot for the opportunity to draft some of the early talent. It might be good in the end, but players like Blackmon don’t come along very often, so it is really a toss up.

Yes

If Claiborne or Kalil isn’t available I could see us trading out and picking someone like Kirkpatrick or Z. Brown

Zach Brown

I feel they could definitely make a move to pick him later.

Dont get me wrong

I probably wouldn’t mind it once he gets here but… We’re ranked 4th in total offense and ranked somewhere around 24th in defense

Like I said having Blackmon wouldn’t be bad but I’d rather draft defense

Hm..

No Michael Floyd? Get the feeling you might’ve forgotten about him, but the idea of someone selecting Kendall Wright ahead of him is to me laughable.

I don't have a right to an opinion, apparently.

Brandon Jacobs is not washed up

the past few weeks have proven that it was a combo of his MCL sprain healing and the OL having some guys replaced, addition by subtraction.

That BS aside, Trent Richardson is a steal

Sorry dude

but I don’t know how you can say a 30 year old running back who runs slower than a rock isn’t washed up. Yes, he had a 100 yard game last week…big woop. The Giants are averaging less than 90 rushing yards per game. If you think getting T Rich and losing Big Ugly wouldn’t be exactly what this team needs, you need to do some rethinking. Also, T Rich is by far the BPA at that spot.

sorry, its been 2 weeks in a row

and while I don’t expect you to watch the games, those that do know who Brandon Jacobs is and what he’s supposed to look like…and he does again. Also what they’re averaging per game couldn’t matter any less then it does, which is nothing.

Jacobs and Richardson would probably be a better pairing.

I strongly disagree

Even 2 weeks of 100 yard rushing games does not mean you’re meant to be a starter. Maybe he can do well in an exclusive 3rd & Short/Goal Line role, but why would you need him when there is a faster, just as strong (if not stronger) version of him in T Rich, just 8 years younger? Ahmad Bradshaw has had a down year plagued by poor O-Line play and injuries. Having a combination of him and T Rich would probably be the strongest combo of RBs in the league.

Leo Durocher

by LiveLoveNYJets on Dec 18, 2011 10:07 AM EST up reply actions

Jacobs isn't quite done

You can’t say that Bradshaw has had a year plagued by poor O-line play and injuries and then say that BJ is having a bad year because he is washed up. BJ is playing with the same O-line and the same amount of injuries. Watching Jacobs for a long time, we know what his running style looks like. These past couple games (which have involved a change in our O-Line surprise surprise) BJ has returned to his dominate running style. That being said, if Richardson was there at this point, he’d be my pick for sure. But not because Jacobs is washed up, just the talent is too good to pass on.

by #56 4life on Dec 18, 2011 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

But this has been the problem with Jacobs since '08

Bradshaw produced last year, while Jacobs hasn’t had a great season for a few years now. The reality is, though, that were the Giants to get T Rich in the draft, they would have a committee of all three of the RBs (unless they trade Bradshaw or something).

"Show me a good loser and I'll show you an idiot."
Leo Durocher

by LiveLoveNYJets on Dec 18, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Sure AB produced....when he was healthy

Believe it or not, BJ is probably healthier than Bradshaw. Bradshaw has been playing with screws in his feet and all kinds of crap, and there is no denying the guy has heart, but he can not stay healthy as a feature back for a whole season. And also I am inclined to believe that Jacobs didn’t get enough carries last season, but whose fault that is I don’t know. Having all 3 of these guys would be phenomenal, especially if the Giants went O-Line in the second round. Not only would are rushing game become light-years better, but it would take pressure off Eli and allow him to play even better than he already is.

by #56 4life on Dec 18, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Running back committees have become the hot commodity in the league and having a receiving, finesse back in Bradshaw, inside the tackle runner in Richardson, and goal line back in Jacobs is the recipe for success. Maybe you get someone like Levy Adcock from Ok State in the second to replace Beatty. Beautyfull.

"Show me a good loser and I'll show you an idiot."
Leo Durocher

by LiveLoveNYJets on Dec 18, 2011 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Beatty actually was pretty good

Where the O-Line was going wrong was on the inside. Dehil was our left guard and Baas was our Center. They were getting eaten alive on the inside, and the interior was generating no push. Now we have Boothe and Petrus in there, who seem to be mauling people. Dehil is playing tackle, which he is better at, but I’ve noticed more pressure on Eli since Beatty went out of the lineup.

by #56 4life on Dec 18, 2011 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

Not according to Pro Football Focus

I realize stats are not the best way to judge players, but they don’t get more accurate than PFF. They grade beatty as the third least efficient tackle in the league.

"Show me a good loser and I'll show you an idiot."
Leo Durocher

by LiveLoveNYJets on Dec 18, 2011 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

Well I think that's crap

He has been solid when he plays. Our O-Line needs are RT and Center really, because I don’t think Baas is the guy, and LG is solved with Petrus, especially if he improves his pass blocking skills. Also in the NFC East, Beatty has held his own against guys like Orkapo and Trent Cole and D. Ware.

by #56 4life on Dec 18, 2011 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

it’s not like Adcock is limited to LT lol.

I reckon he's not

It’d be nice to have a new RT. McKenzie is terrible. We have a guy James Brewer that looks like he might be KMac’s replacement, but you never know. I personally am a big fan of bolstering our line through the draft, but I’m biased because I’m a lineman lol. Personally the best O-line decision the G-Men could make would be getting Deihl & KMac off our team.

Really?

McKenzie WAS the best RT in the league when healthy. Now, not so much. He’s been getting dominated by DE’s and OLB’s this year. I don’t think LG is a concern, Petrus is playing well there and will only get better. This guy is freakishly strong and will help us rebuild our power running game. RT and C are the Giants two biggest areas of concern on the line.

KMac may get healthy, but he won't get younger

And as he gets older, he’s only going to become MORE injury riddled, not less. Center is a big concern, Baas isn’t the answer. I do like Peter Konz, would be a great building block for our O-line. Also, I don’t really want to draft Kmac’s replacement, at least not this year. Lets see what Brewer can do before spending a high draft pick on a tackle.

PFF

Yet when you factor is run blocking he is middle of the pack. You also have to factor in the footsteps Eli hears that has him coming forward in the pocket every pass play regardless of threat, and the fact that the umpire repositioning has affected the number of and way that penalties are called.

PFF does a good job but needs to be verified through fans to see if it is working. Halfway through the season they had Ross as better than Webster at CB. That idea was laughable. They were overweighting INTs in the equation.

and I’ve heard that too. If it comes down to it, you switch him and Michael Floyd as Floyd would work well out of the west coast offense. I just had Jones 2 spots ahead on my big board so I went best receiver available.

Think about this

your division rivals are going to get Andrew Luck next year. If Cortland Finnegan does in fact leave, your put into a pretty bad situation. You have no true #1 CB to defend the pass.

I like going BPA for the Steelers, but there are wayyyyy too many important needs for the team to draft Still

I haven’t given up on Ziggy yet, and while Still is better than Cam Heyward from last year, Cam was still a first rounder.

Given, all the OL I"d want are gone, so it’d be a very tough spot there

The other possibility there

would be Kelechi Osemele. I strongly considered giving him to the Steelers, but I thought Still was too perfect for your system to pass up.

Yeah I'd rather go BPA than get Osmele

We always could reach for a guy like Heyward, but…. I dunno, I’d say I’d hope for one of the premier OL to drop

The other possibility there I suppose

would be Vontaze Burfict since Farrior is turning 93 years old next season. However, I myself, along with many others, have fallen completely off the Burfict horse. He becomes less and less attractive as the days go on.

Ziggy isn't that bad off

I think PFF is pretty far off when it comes to him, but that’s just my opinion.

I don’t mind Still if he can be a NT in the future. At 6’5 I think he would be able to add some more weight.

Not a fan of Wilson there

He looks more like a 2nd rounder to me, seems like a “need” pick, which would go against the BPA Elway and Xanders have been preaching. Think about it this way: If Denver doesn’t draft Wilson there, who’s the next team to take him? He’d likely fall to the 2nd round, possibly to Denver’s second round pick since the 2 other teams with RB needs, G-men/Cincy, already addressed RB.

Also:

Willis McGahee is turning 32 next season and there is no other starting caliber running back on a team that has rushed over 50 times in a game twice this season.

You might wanna do some fact checking. McGahee turns 31 next October, but I still see your point there. Also, McGahee has never had 50 carries in Denver. The most he’s ever had was 28. His 199 carries is a solid amount, ranking 14th in the league, and almost 100 carries less then MJD. I’m not saying this to prove RB isn’t a need, it definitly is, I just wanted to clear this up

C'mon, join us, there's plenty of koolaid on the Broncos bandwagon for everyone!

by DBroncs1414 on Dec 18, 2011 11:27 AM EST reply actions

Typo on the age

and I said the TEAM has rushed for 50+ carries twice this season, not McGahee. Go watch the highlight tape of David Wilson from this year. It is hard to imagine that he is not a first round pick to a team that relies on the run. I also predict trends (players that will move up/down) as evidenced with me giving the Jags Dwight Jones 8th overall. Wilson possesses everything you could want in a running back and would be a perfect fit in Denver.

I respect Wilson's skills

but I question whether he is more of a product of a great run team in a weak conference. I’ve watched him, and in some games he’s looked great. But I’m also scared by the noticeable production drop when they play teams with good D’s. I know its obvious he shouldn’t have the same numbers against good D’s as bad D’s, but his production against good D’s is pretty mediocre.

Ark St: 20 carries, 85 yards, 4.3 ypc
UNC: 21 carries, 82 yards, 3.9 ypc
Clemson: 11 carries, 32 yards 2.9 ypc

Also, compared to Ryan Williams, why does Wilson have 11 less TD’s then Williams had his last year? I hate to compare numbers when it comes to prospects but I can’t understand how if Wilson is so spectacular why is there such a drop off?

And as a fellow mock drafter, if you didn’t have Wilson going to the Broncos, where would he go? I fully believe he wouldn’t go till the mid 2nd, and if that’s the case, why would a BPA team draft him round 1?

C'mon, join us, there's plenty of koolaid on the Broncos bandwagon for everyone!

The other pick that I would go with there

would be Brandon Thompson, the DT from Clemson.

I personally think Wilson is over rated and have the same concerns that DBroncos1414 has with his performances against top defences. He was dreadful against Clemson.
My personal choice in that position would be Devon Still rather than Thompson. Bunkley has played well for Broncos this year as the run stuffing nose in the 4-3 but need a better pass rush from the interior and I think Still would provide this.

Bills

Really Jeffery over Floyd, I don’t really see that. I might have gone pass rushing OLB here, but can’t argue with a WR.

by Mr. h on Dec 18, 2011 1:07 PM EST reply actions

This year

the OLB class is weak in the first round, but strong in the 2nd and 3rd. It would be better to pick up Shea McClellin or Vinny Curry in the 2nd round while also picking up a wide receiver in the first. I personally hate what Jeffery has shown this season, but he will probably work his but off in the offseason and have a nice combine, so he stays the #3 receiver.

As they have moved farther up the draft board this weekend

But with Claiborne and Khalil off the board, I think he is the best player left.. If you have him ahead of Jeffery that is.

Bucs

I think you’ve got us about 4 picks below where we’ll actually pick (I’m projecting us to finish 4-12 and pick at #5), but put that aside for now. Kirkpatrick’s a good choice, think we might also strongly consider Kuechly.

Who is comparing Hightower to Ray Ray?

Baltimore would probably take Burfict over Hightower if both were available, Ray Lewis already mentors Vontaze and said he would like to help the kid develop further.

He has been better and more consistent THIS YEAR

Because Burfict has a whole lot more speed, instincts, and overall upside. Hightower is slower, limited in coverage, and is really only a 2-down guy. Ravens want a playmaker and that’s Burfict.

Rams

“they need to rally their team around Sam Bradford. If Bradford is not playing because of injury, that’s kind of hard to do. Matt Kalil is” The Rams will rally behind Bradford when they get playmakers for him. Now that goes a long way in protecting a QB. Insert a bigger O-Line via FA and UDFA, add FA Mike Tolbert a tough interior runner, draft Chris Polk an all purpose RB, Pound the rock to create opportunities downfield where WR’s like Blackmon and Lloyd can go to work. Kalil is a great OT’, but he will not put points on the board. The Lions do not have the Best O-Line by far, but those playmakers are making Stafford’s life a lot easier.

by ValdezY on Dec 18, 2011 8:42 PM EST reply actions

"He will not put points on the board"

this is a typical reaction when teams draft o-linemen. They are not sexy picks and fans would obviously prefer someone like Blackmon, but Kalil is the clear pick there. Unless you trade down.

It makes sense when you think about it

The Browns have Joe Thomas, Miami has Jake Long and look at how those teams are doing. I’m not saying we don’t need a tackle because we do, but do we need to take him while there are good playmakers on the board? I don’t know to be honest, but I am sure that there are options for us in the 2nd round. To be honest, I would like to trade down to 15ish, take Martin if he is on the board, Micheal Floyd if Martin isnt there. Depending on who we take in the first we can take either Dwight Jones or a tackle like DJ Fluker, Mike Adams, or Levy Adcock.

by zachmann21 on Dec 18, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

Its a definite possibility

but I just want to point out that DJ Fluker is staying in school and I have Martin gone by 15 and Mike Adams in round one.

So Do The Lions Who Are In A Playoff Hunt Thanks To Playmakers!

They do not have a great LOT; but they have an abundance of playmakers. San Diego does not have an all world OLT; but they have an abundance of playmakers. QB’s Playmakers, and smart coaches can adapt for defeciencies on the O-Line. Mike Tice was able to make adjustments prior to Cutler going down. Yes , the Bears used a number 1 pick for an OT. Injury to Carimi’s knee in the second game of the season put him on the IR. Again no guarantees no absolutes.

by ValdezY on Dec 19, 2011 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

Do Not Care About Sexy

All I care about is what player is a better fit for The Rams; IMO Blackmon trumps Kalil. If by "typical reaction’ you mean a choice driven by emotion not reason: That is wrong as well. “He will not put points on the board” is based on fact; not emotion. During the course of the season I have watched defenses only rush three; they had no fear of the Ram WR’s: This is fact and not emotionally driven." Kalil is the clear pick there", you did mention trading down as well, but there are always more options. I have listened to the typical draftspeak cliche’s for years: " He is a can’t miss product, " A once in a lifetime player", " There is no other choice", all absolutes with little basis on fact or reason. Any player can miss: Injury, drugs, lack of desire, domestic issues. They are human beings with great talent but also human flaws. I do not buy into absolute.

I’m getting the same kind of vibe from him that I was getting from Mike Wallace when he was coming out of Ole Piss in ‘09. I think he’ll start shooting up draft boards once the process begins in the next couple of months. Would absolutely love to see that kid in teal come Draft Day.

in points allow and mostly every mock draft has them taking a Wr? Wow. Ron R seems to like the current Wr on the roster, would be in surprise they drafted another one after his statement. The defense needs more quality starters. Just my thoughts. Wr can be targeted in free agency or in the 2nd round etc.

Browns

I would like to see Seattle trade up into Clevelands first pick, for 2012’s 1, 2, 3 & 2013’s 2, 3, & 4th. do you think this is too much to give to get a potential “Franchise” QB in RGIII?

by J. W. on Dec 19, 2011 12:01 PM EST reply actions

That's a horrendous trade for the Seahawks

Using the Drafttek draft value trading chart and discounting 2013 picks by 1 round:

Seahawks 2012
1st = 1100 pts
2nd = 440
3rd = 200
2012 Total= 1740 pts

Seahawks 2013
1st = ~400
2nd = ~200
3rd = ~70
4th = ~30
2013 Total = 800 points

Seahawks 2012+2013 picks = ~2540

Browns 2012 pick = 1400 pts

its better than your 1st try but i feel that this year has a weak class of OT’s . depending on what RT we could get in the 2nd or 3rd makes me unsure of this pick .
i’d rather trade back and get extra picks .
would be interested to hear if he was BPA or if you were filling a need . i’m not even 100% sure if jones has declared for the draft yet

if its for you it won't pass you

2nd what Riddlah said

In no way is Ziggy Hood a bust, and the Steelers are fine with the way he’s progressing. They also have a kid named Steve McLendon who the team feels is as good as Cameron Heyward if not better (This is expected to change as Heyward is still just a rookie). The only defensive lineman the Steelers will pursue this early would be a potential nose tackle.
