Updated two-round 2012 NFL mock draft
After not updating my own mock draft since late October, now seemed to be a good time to do so. I can't speak for anyone else who does a mock draft, but these are quite time consuming. This edition of the mock draft is two rounds (you're welcome New Orleans and Atlanta) and took probably four hours of research and typing out.
The hardest choices were those made for Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Arizona and Kansas City. Each of those teams is currently in a poor spot for what their needs are. Unfortunately for them, my mock drafts don't include trade scenarios — they're too hard to make realistic. But when the real draft comes around, expect many. In fact, the first four picks may all be shopped around next year because of the new rookie wage scale.
Find the mock after the jump and let me know what you think. The order is the same as the draft order I put up last week. (Also make sure to check out the pre-bowl mock from Pick256)
1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
The Colts need so much more than a quarterback — especially if he's a backup for a year or two — but in a mock that doesn't include trades this has to be the pick. If the Colts take Luck, it becomes critical they hit on three or four more picks in the 2012 draft.
2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, OT, USC
No matter who picks second in the draft, Kalil will be the choice. He's a franchise left tackle who should start for a decade and be really good. I'm not quite as high on Kalil's potential greatness, but he profiles as a Pro Bowl player. Given the great need for offensive tackles in the NFL, it wouldn't be a shock if some team even looked into trade into this spot to take Kalil.
3. Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
The Vikings are currently 30th in the league in pass defense and starting Benny Sapp and Cedric Griffin on the outside. Claiborne isn't as good as previous top 10 cornerbacks Patrick Peterson or Joe Haden but he'd start as a rookie and upgrade a poor unit. With Christian Ponder in place, this should be another pick that is shopped around to a team looking to draft a quarterback.
4. Carolina Panthers - Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
The Panthers may clamor for Claiborne, but should be happy settling for Martin. On the left side, Jordan Gross is 31 and Jeff Otah can't stay healthy. On the right, Martin would immediately be an upgrade over Byron Bell, who has been decent. With his power blocking style, Martin would fit into the Panthers offensive scheme perfectly.
5. Washington Redskins - Matt Barkley, QB, USC
The question about Washington won't be what position they draft, but what quarterback they choose. The notion among draft analysts is that head coach Mike Shanahan would prefer an athletic quarterback based on his past. But just because he was fortunate enough to coach a less-mobile John Elway and he drafted Jay Cutler doesn't make it imperial proof he'll go with the more athletic Robert Griffin III. Barkley gives the Redskins a better chance to win immediately while Griffin looks to face more growing pains adapting to the NFL.
6. Cleveland Browns - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
The Browns are in a difficult position in the 2012 draft because they quarterback/coach cycle they're on. Do they take a quarterback here? If so, if the team struggles while he learns, would coach Pat Shurmur be kept following two bad seasons? Incumbent quarterback Colt McCoy hasn't necessarily been given a fair shake this season. There's been the Peyton Hillis drama, suspect play calling, bad line play and average wide receiver production. If the Browns went with Richardson, who is far and away the best running back in the class, Hillis' days in Cleveland are over. Wide receiver could be a consideration here as well.
7. Miami Dolphins - Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
Once strong contenders for Andrew Luck, settling on Robert Griffin III wouldn't be a bad consolation for the Dolphins. Matt Moore has been decent for the Dolphins, which could allow the team to ease Griffin into the starting spot. Once he's ready to start, Griffin could give the Dolphins as exciting of an offense as you'll see in the NFL.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
If the Jaguars want Blaine Gabbert to be a success, they have to give him better wide receivers. The top wide out for the Jaguars this season is Mike Thomas. He doesn't even have 400 yards receiving this year. In fact, no Jaguars receiver has more than the 415 of tight end Marcedes Lewis. There may not be a team in the NFL with more No. 3 wide receivers than the Jaguars.
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
Tampa Bay went from being one of the surprise teams of 2010 to being one of the most disappointing in 2011. The team is 26th in pass defense and it may be time to find that replacement for 36-year-old Ronde Barber.
10. Kansas City Chiefs - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
The Chiefs face a tough situation if they can't land Griffin or Barkley in the first round. Right now, a nose tackle doesn't look like good idea this high – though Memphis' Dontari Poe is a consideration. Wide receiver could also be the thought, especially if Scott Pioli wants to give Matt Cassel another weapon to help him succeed.
11. Philadelphia Eagles - Luke Kuechly, MLB, Boston College
It's time to buck some trends. The Eagles are a team that rarely takes linebackers this early in the draft, but Kuechly needs to be the exception. If the Eagles want their defense to succeed, they need a smart, sure tackler like Kuechly. He's the kind of player who could make everyone else around him look better by masking their deficiencies.
12. Buffalo Bills - Nick Perry, DE/OLB, Southern California
It's true, Perry would be another defensive end to linebacker convert who is high on athleticism and a little light on production. But it's time for Bills fans to get over what happened with Aaron Maybin. Just because a player of a similar mold didn't work doesn't mean it should be avoided going forward. If the Bills want their 3-4 scheme to be a success, a better pass rush is needed.
13. Arizona Cardinals - Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Adams is a player whose stock should rise during the offseason process. This is quite early for him, but it should prove how severely the Cardinals need offensive tackle help. Adams is an immense tackle with better athleticism than you'd expect for a 6-foot-8 lineman. Don't be worried about his suspension at the beginning of the season. He was dominant in the games he played.
14. Seattle Seahawks - David DeCastro, G, Stanford
The top needs for the Seahawks are a quarterback and a pass rusher. Obviously there are no quarterbacks worth this high of a pick. The better pass rushers available don't fit what the Seahawks look for in the Leo position. DeCastro would be somewhat of a luxury pick for the Seahawks, but would be better than either Robert Gallery or John Moffitt. He could also start at right guard and Moffitt could be used a center, where he played early in his college career.
15. San Diego Chargers - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
Vaughn Martin has been a nice surprise for the Chargers this season, but there's nothing to prove he's little more than a one-year wonder. Coples, once thought to be a top-five pick, would be a perfect fit in a 3-4 set. He's strong at the point of attack and can be dominant against the run. He struggles some firing off the snap, but that gets masked some in a three-man front.
16. Dallas Cowboys - Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
Pick any cornerback in the first round and he'd be an upgrade for the Cowboys. In fact, it won't be a surprise to see the Cowboys come out of the draft next year with two new cornerbacks. Jenkins has elite talent that is besieged by questionable character. If you think that would stop Jerry Jones from drafting Jenkins, you don't know much about the NFL.
17. Tennessee Titans - Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
Center is a position the Titans were expected to address in the draft last year, but decided to go with a quarterback and help on defense. Konz missed the last few games of Wisconsin's season, but he's the center equivalent of DeCastro. He's that good.
18. New York Giants - Dont'a Hightower, MLB, Alabama
The Giants may want more athleticism from their linebackers, but Hightower is a plug and play guy who would start as a rookie. A reliable middle linebacker is exactly what the Giants' defense needs and Hightower is much more than that.
19. Chicago Bears - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
There are some teams whose needs are so evident they're impossible to ignore. For the Bears, it's been wide receiver for about three years. Floyd really blossomed as a senior, despite having similar production of past seasons. He's a much leaner and quicker wide receiver while still retaining his strength. Floyd may not even last this long in the drat, but he's here now and would be a steal for the Bears.
20. Cincinnati Bengals - Kelechi Osemele, OT/G, Iowa State
Bobbie Williams, at 35, may face retirement after suffering a season-ending injury this year. His replacement, Clint Boling, has been less than ideal. Osemele is a big power blocker who could play guard or even move out to right tackle in the future.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland Raiders) - Lamar Miller, RB, Miami
Cedric Benson's production has dropped and he's averaged less than four yards per carry the last two seasons. He's also 28. His backup Bernard Scott has never shown the ability to take over the top spot. Miller, who is entering the draft following his redshirt sophomore year, could start for the Bengals for years. He's quick and has great cut and burst ability.
22. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta Falcons) - Cordy Glenn, OT/G, Georgia
The right side of the offensive line has gotten the Browns in trouble all season. Glenn could start next season at either right guard or tackle for the Browns and be an upgrade to Shawn Luavao or Tony Pashos. Linebacker, cornerback or wide receiver would also be strongly considered here. Needless to say, the Browns need big-time help at multiple positions.
23. New York Jets - Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
If there were a book about Rex Ryan's coaching philosophy, his love for pass rushers wouldn't be footnote. In fact, it would probably be the first few chapters. While Aaron Maybin has been a revelation for the Jets this season, Upshaw is an every down linebacker who has the strength the Jets covet in linebackers. Upshaw is strong enough that the Jets could line him up at end in certain formations.
24. Denver Broncos - Devon Still, DT, Penn State
The Broncos need a player like Marcel Dareus — a stout end that can make some big plays without much help. Still isn't the most natural transition to end in a 3-4, but he should have enough athleticism to be a factor on the outside. Imagine a system with Still holding the edge with Von Miller coming in behind him. Scary.
25. Detroit Lions - Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
It's true that outside linebacker isn't the biggest need for the Lions. But general manager Martin Mayhew proved this year pick Nick Fairley that he lives by the best player available philosophy Brown far and away represents that and while Justin Durant is solid, Brown could be a star.
26. New England Patriots - Melvin Ingram, OLB/DE, South Carolina
There are several areas of need on the Patriots' defense. New England didn't take a pass rusher in last year's draft, which has forced the team to run more 4-3 formations this season. While the pass rush has been moderately successful, a switch back to predominantly a 3-4 would rely on the team drafting a pass rusher. Ingram has been electric at times while standing up outside the tackle. Considering he's one of the draft's most versatile players, Bill Belichick could fall in love.
27. San Francisco 49ers - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
Jeffery has slipped this far because of a lack of production this season and some worries about his separation skills. At this point, though, he's a big-time steal. Under Jim Harbaugh, he'd be forced to play hard, which there have been questions about with Jeffery. He's a top 10 talent, though, and could become a factor in the team's passing offense as a rookie.
28. New England Patriots (from New Orleans Saints) - Chase Minniefield, CB, Virginia
Year after year the Patriots seem to target defensive backs only to see them disappoint. While Minnifield's upside may not be as high as other cornerbacks, his bust factor is extremely low. He has the size to match up well with the bigger AFC East wide receivers like Stevie Johnson of the Bills and Brandon Marshall of the Dolphins, but enough quickness to not get beat over the top.
29. Houston Texans - Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
The Wade Phillips defense has never really been built around nose tackle, but imagine what a guru like him could do with a player like Poe. Arguably the best nose eligible for the draft, Poe is a hulking figure up front who can occupy blockers and collapse the line. He'd take some pressure of ends J.J. Watt and Antonio Smith, which will allow Houston's linebackers to make even more plays. The biggest beneficiaries of playing with someone like Poe will be Houston's inside linebackers.
30. Baltimore Ravens - Michael Brewster, C, Ohio State
What Baltimore really needs is a true franchise left tackle, which they haven't really had since Jonathan Ogden retired. Unfortunately drafting in the back end of the first round greatly hurts the team's chances to do that. At center, Matt Birk is in the final year of his contract and may retire at the end of the season.
31. Pittsburgh Steelers - Brandon Washington, G, Miami
Washington is the blue print for what the Steelers like to have with their offensive linemen. He's a physical blocker who can drive defenders backward. He struggled some this season playing tackle, but would be an immediate starter at guard for the Steelers.
32. Green Bay Packers - Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska
There are some picks that just seem so obvious. This is one of them. The Packers' defense has struggled this season due in part to the play of the defensive ends. Crick would be a lot like Cameron Heyward was in this year's draft for Pittsburgh. He wouldn't necessarily become a starter from the get go, but would see considerable playing time while developing.
SECOND ROUND:
33. Indianapolis Colts - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
There are so many possibilities for the Colts with this pick. They would be fine going after a running back or linebacker. Dennard seems like a bigger impact player. Don't forget, many thought he outplayed first-round pick Prince Amukamara at Nebraska in 2010.
34. St. Louis Rams - Dwight Jones, WR, North Carolina
Getting a No. 1 left tackle and wide receiver would be a dream scenario for the Rams. Jones is a great talent who may not last this long in the draft.
35. Minnesota Vikings - Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
Percy Harvin can be a great player for the Vikings but struggles when they ask him to play outside on every play. Sanu could hold the outside spot, letting Harvin be versatile.
36. Carolina Panthers - Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
Captain Munnerlyn has been a decent player for the Panthers but would be much better in the slot. Gilmore is a big cornerback who would pair nicely with Chris Gamble.
37. Washington Redskins - Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
Washington's offense would get a kick start by pairing Wright with whatever quarterback they draft in the first round. Wright has the speed that Mike Shanahan often seeks at wide receiver.
38. Cleveland Browns - Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois
Rookie Jabaal Sheard has been solid at one defensive end spot for the Browns this season, but more talent is needed to rush the passer consistently. Mercilu, a local product from Akron, has had a break out year.
39. Miami Dolphins - Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson
Allen is the best tight end eligible for the 2012 draft and would be an upgrade over Athony Fasano. There is no better safety valve for young quarterbacks than a sure-handed tight end and Allen would fit perfectly.
40. Jacksonville Jaguars - Andre Branch, DE, Clemson
The Jaguars' current leader in sacks is Jeramy Mincey with 5.5 and Aaron Kampman has turned out to be a bad signing. Clearly, end is as big of a need for Jacksonville as wide receiver.
41. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Vontaze Burfict, MLB, Arizona State
Here is another top talent sliding. Burfict has struggled this season but could play on the weak side due to his athleticism.
42. Kansas City Chiefs - Josh Chapman, NT, Alabama
If the Chiefs can't get a first-round quarterback, they shouldn't take one in the second just because there are some available. Ricky Stanzi would be just as worthy of a chance. Instead, take a proven nose tackle who can replace Kelly Gregg.
43. Philadelphia Eagles - Robert Lester, FS, Alabama
The Eagles continue to have safety issues after unsuccessfully trying to replace Brian Dawkins.
44. Buffalo Bills - Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin
The Bills have a nice young wide receiver group and Toon would add to that. He's a dynamic pass catcher who works the sidelines better than just about any wide out in this year's draft.
45. Philadelphia Eagles (from Arizona Cardinals) - Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
After linebacker, the Eagles' defense has suffered this season because of poor play from the defensive tackles. Thompson would be a steal at this point and start immediately for Philadelphia.
46. Seattle Seahawks - Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
The feeling is that Jones is returning for his senior season, but since he hasn't announced yet, he's being considered for this mock. He's not the athletic quarterback the Seahawks may look at, but at this point in the draft he's a good pickup.
47. San Diego Chargers - Bruce Irvin, DE/OLB West Virginia
The Chargers took a bust in Larry English, but Irvin is a much more explosive player. He's miscast in the West Virginia 3-3-5 defense and could see his stock skyrocket during the NFL Scouting Combine.
48. Dallas Cowboys - Mark Barron, SS, Alabama
Abram Elam was so bad the Browns didn't want him back after last season. That should tell you plenty about the Cowboys' strong safety situation. Barron is an experienced, heady player who may never be a superstar but won't disappoint.
49. Tennessee Titans - Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall
Although they've added several nice pieces to the defense, the Titans need more speed getting after the passer. Curry is a natural 4-3 end with good quickness off the line of scrimmage.
50. New York Giants - Levy Adcock, OT, Oklahoma State
Adcock has had a great career for Oklahoma State, and reportedly hasn't allowed a sack this season. He could play any number of positions for the Giants.
51. Cincinnati Bengals - Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia
The Bengals have struggled some this season after losing Jonathan Joseph to free agency last offseason. While Boykin isn't an exact replacement, he's better than Adam Jones.
52. Chicago Bears - Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida State
The Bears need to come out of the next offseason with a left tackle. If they don't, the offense will continue to struggle. Sanders has some upside thanks to his athleticism.
53. New England Patriots (from Oakland Raiders) - Alameda Ta'amu
If the Patriots want to continue shifting between the 4-3 and 3-4 defense, a player like Ta'amu would be a perfect fit on the line. He's not a natural nose tackle, but could be lined up at end and shifted inside in four-man fronts.
54. Atlanta Falcons - Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin
The Flacons have needed to address their offensive line for a couple years. At this point, Zeitler is the best lineman available, though the Falcons could look to trade up for a tackle.
55. New York Jets - T.J. McDonald, FS, Southern California
This is the kind of safety that Rex Ryan is going to fall in love with. He's big, likes to lay a hit and is good in coverage. McDonald be able to play both safety spots in the Jets' system.
56. Detroit Lions - David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech
Jahvid Best is a solid running back, but has a serious injury history. Wilson would be a steal at this point and could take over as the team's top running back. Finding carries for both Best and Wilson would be a good problem for the Lions to have.
57. Denver Broncos - Chris Polk, RB, Washington
If the Broncos want to be a run-first team going forward (which they should), help for an aging Willis McGahee is needed. Polk is a strong running back, and head coach John Fox may see a little Jonathan Stewart in his game.
58. San Francisco 49ers - Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma State
If Dashon Goldson isn't re-signed this offseason, free safety could become San Francisco's greatest need. Even if he is, depth would be nice and Martin could even play corner in nickel situations.
59. New England Patriots - Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa
To call Chad Ochocinco a bust in New England would be an understatement. McNutt could develop into a No. 1 receiver and has the ability to get vertical.
60. New Orleans Saints - Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Worthy may not be the stout, power tackle the Saints need but he would be a great pickup at this point in the draft. The Saints have to help the front seven of their defense and Worthy is arguably the best player available here.
61. Houston Texans - Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State
The Texans desperately need a No. 2 wide receiver to help take the pressure off Andre Johnson. Quick has big upside and should rise during the offseason process.
62. Baltimore Ravens - Kevin Reddick, MLB, North Carolina
Reddick would be an ideal choice if the Ravens finally want to find a replacement, or even a foil, for Ray Lewis.
63. Pittsburgh Steelers - Audie Cole, MLB, North Carolina State
Cole could eventually take the place of James Farrior in the middle. He's a big effort player with good athleticism. He could be a star in a system like the Steelers employ.
64. Green Bay Packers - Brandon Jenkins, DE/OLB, Florida State
It was hard to find a spot for Jenkins after not mocking him to the Jets, Steelers or Patriots. I'd expect him to go much higher than this, and if not the Packers get a good player opposite Clay Matthews.

Not the most exciting mock (for the Panthers)
But I love it… We get our future in the OLine and we finaly get a CB with great size
The Jaguars currently have two players tied for the team lead in sacks. They both have 3.5. Clearly, end is as big of a need for Jacksonville as wide receiver.
Check the stats again – Jeremy Mincey has 5.5 sacks. DE is still a need though

personally I am more of a fan of Curry if available
Other than that the picks are not bad for the Jaguars.
let me also mention that i think as of right now jags are picking way higher than you have them.
by that i mean beofre wash and miami, making a QB avaialbale at our pick, which could make a QB the selection or a trade down and netting of a pick or 2
(I know you mention the order is not updated, but my critique is somewhat based on the true order)
Dan, I think yer awesome and everything...but not a huge fan of the Giants mock.
Herzlich’s made a ton of progress, is already familiar with the scheme and has more or less the same strengths and weaknesses as Hightower. If we were going to draft an MLB, he’d probably not be the “thumper” type…we probably re-sign Goff…and he, Herz, and Greg Jones are all similar.
Much rather have Lamar Miller, Cordy Glenn, Kelechi Osemele, or Brandon Washington. Wouldn’t mind taking Michael Floyd to replace Mario Manningham if we lose him in FA.
As for the 2nd round, I have concerns about Adcock’s run blocking and strength. Would not be an ideal fit for a power blocking Giants scheme. If we take Lamar Miller, give me Kevin Zietler. If we take an OL, give me David Wilson.
I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

Giants do not start rookies
Go back through the last 5 drafts, excluding injuries, not one draft pick has started for the Giants. Even with some of them filling major needs, like Kenny Phillips, who sat behind the previous year’s 7th rounder (Michael Johnson). So Hightower is not going to start. I’m not completely against the pick, but I think it is unlikely. Kuechly would be a different story – unparalled intelligence.
Giants love to draft WRs. I’d go Floyd in the 1st. Major talent. Manningham is just not reliable.
In the 2nd, I’d prefer Zeitler over Adcock. More of a mauler, and can play either guard spot. David Wilson would not be bad either. I think Adcock will struggle as a tackle in the NFL.
"Can't anybody here play this game?" - Casey Stengel, watching the 2011 Giants
I think Hightower is a terrible pick
no matter what scheme the Giants are running next year (hopefully its not the same one), Hightower is basically the next Brandon Spikes. And I think you know how much I didn’t like Ol’ Sun Dial Spikes.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
It will be outdated again next week
So why care? This could be the exact order come draft time. It just doesnt make sense to worry either way.

Thanks. I didn’t know I had to explicitly spell it out for everyone.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
But,
If the Rams and Vikes have the same record, their picks would flop in the 2nd round
It’s not that we dont understand that the draft order changes, it just doesnt make any sense to write a mock draft using outdated information.
Also, its not going to be the exact order of the draft come draft time. It just looks like you were too lazy/incompetent to even get the order correct.
Looking at your picks, it is pretty obvious you got the incompetent part nailed. My kid sister could have done better than this nonsense.
OH, SNAP!
Every April, I have a mock draft contest on the site. The winner gets a prize directly from my pocket. In the past two drafts, I haven’t had to give out a prize. I suggest if your kid sister can do better she enter the contest.
I guess the supposition as well is that your intelligence is higher than that of your kid sister. After all, she is a mere kid and by the tone of your comment, I can tell you’re a full grown, mature man. You are also welcome to enter the contest.

This can’t be the exact order come draft day because some teams can’t possibly get into this draft position now.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
Colts
This is the ideal situation for the Colts. Luck is simply too good to pass up and Dennard fits the Tampa-2 style like a glove.
I won’t think your comments about the Colts taking a linebacker or a running back at the top of the second are accurate though. The Colts look pretty good at running back since Donald Brown progressed very well this year and outside linebacker doesn’t get a 2nd round priority in the Indy system because they rotate out so frequently. I expect the first pick to be Luck and the second to be Dennard or Minnifield.
It's WR and DE/OLB for the Bills...
… Not the opposite in the first two rounds: the draft seems to have better WRs at the top and deep at DE/OLB. How about Floyd or Jeffery in the 1st and B Jenkins in the 2nd?
Anyway, I liked the analysis of need for the team.
by amfasolo on Dec 19, 2011 6:21 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
I don't even argue that they need both...
but do you really believe they need anything more then a pass rusher right now? They have people catching balls somewhat effectively, but no one is getting after the passer with any kind of frequency. Chan and Buddy also really seem to like their WRs. Also I would go Floyd over Jeffery, and Curry over Jenkins in your scenario.
I mentioned the switch because it does not look like there is a true freak DE-OLB, Von Miller type of player, available in the draft, worth a top 10 pick this year. On the other hand, at least two among Blackmon, Floyd and Jeffery are always in the top 10 in most mock drafts. Bills definitely needs pass-rush, but if a freak athlete is available at other positions, I can see them going for it.
On the order of the top WR, I have no clear idea between Floyd (haven’t seen a lot of ND games) and Jeffery (not really called his number in the single game I saw). Same for DE. (not a lot of college games broadcasted in Brazil LOL)
Sorry about the late reply: blogs not available on the Internet at work. :-)

I like the picks
Question: you don’t see Tannehill in the top 64 picks? I see him rising, a lot, as the draft process goes along. What are your thoughts on him?
Starting the official Buffalo "Draft a Pass Rusher in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
I’m not a fan. I can’t recall a QB who has had so many bad second halves in a season. I didn’t feel comfortable putting him anywhere. Where do you think he’d fall in this scenario?
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
I have him as a second rounder right now
And I can see him working into the first during the draft process. I’m not super concerned with the breakdowns. There was a lot more on Texas A&M wrong than Tannehill. He brought them back against Texas, but the defense couldn’t hold.
The only game that I think Tannehill lost was the Oklahoma State game.
Starting the official Buffalo "Draft a Pass Rusher in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
I don't think DE is that big of a need for Jaguars.
Mincey should have like 8 sacks, but he’s missed a few. But anyway he gets pressure on every play, and Roth would probably have like 6 right now, but he’s missed the last month.
Anyone interested in making money easy and quick on the interne, let me know through twitter or facebook(preferably facebook).

I don't think DE is a need either.
While it’d be nice if we had the dynamic every down pass rusher that would get 12-15 sacks year in and year out, the Jags have other pressing matters to address.
very true
Jags draft based on need so since it is not a need, scrap the pick despite him potentially being BAP. Yup. you got it right.
Regardless of the sarcasm, DE is a need. claiming it is not a need is part of what is wrong with many of my fellow jags fans. Mincey is a nice pass rusher, and to have him as the DE opposite the premier pass rusher will do wonders for this defesne, but frankly he is not the #1 pass rushing guy you want. You want a J Pierre-Paul or Julius Peppers type guy who can come off the edge and rack up 10-15 sacks a year without a doubt. As for who is on the roster other than Mincey, the only other guy who is worth much is Roth who is a very solid rotational guy.
Jags draft strategy (based on need as you say)
Will that change with new owner? Is he keeping your front office? I haven’t kept up with your situation.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
well our GM just got a 3 year extenstion
nd every indication I am getting is that the new owner admires what the old owner has put in place, meaning GM probably stays. Obviously the coaching staff is going to be shaken up and possibly totally changed, but then again that is what Wayne Weaver set in motion.
being gone on injury still means he wasn't there to help the team
DE has been a need in Jax practically since I graduated elementary school
Crick to GB = Insta-rec. Excellent. And a pass-rusher in the second just makes it that much better. Well done Dan.
Also, you never responded to my question about Dennard. You mentioned he played poorly, but outside of giving up a few big plays on PA and trick plays, I thought he did very well. Our pass defense was in the 70s w/o him, and top 20 with him. He had a huge impact for Nebraska when he got back on the field and up to speed.

No way the Lions take another RB in the second round
They will give Mikel LeShoure (who they traded back into the 2nd round last year to get) his fair shake. Combined with hopefully a healthy Jahvid Best and a possibly resurgent Kevin Smith I find another RB pick incredibly unlikely.

by craggt on Dec 19, 2011 6:42 PM EST reply actions 1 recs
Just my two cents, but you're overly optimistic...
Here are the RB’s on the Lions roster:
1. Jahvid Best – major injury history due to concussions. he has said he’ll be back in 2012, however you have to be concerned about his long-term health and career status
2. Mikel Leshoure – tore his achilles in training camp. 1/3 of all players who have a similar injury never play again. as of dec 9th leshoure wasn’t even cleared to run yet, and that injury happened on aug 8th. his health w
3. Kevin Smith – k smooth has been a great story this year, but don’t forget that he was originally let go by the lions due to his injury history
4. Maurice Morris – he’s been a true professional and provides excellent depth, but at 32 years old he’s over-the-hill in RB years
5. Keiland Williams – he hasn’t shown much this year, and if brought back in 2012 it would most likely be only in the short-yardage role he’s currently in
So, after breaking it down, things look pretty dicey on the RB depth chart. Mayhew has shown a BPA draft strategy since taking over as GM, and if a RB is the BPA when the Lions are on the clock, don’t doubt that Mayhew selects said RB. He’s taken a DT in the 1st Round followed by a RB in the 2nd round two years running; and he won’t be afraid to use a high draft pick on a RB again.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it ~Aristotle
yeah first thing i thought of
Plus with some encouraging production from Kevin Smith thus far (when he’s healthy) I really can’t see them going RB in the 2nd round especially without taking a corner or lineman in the first round

Update
This is not the correct order the draft would go right now. The Dolphins would be picking 9th overall while the Bills are picking 10th overall.

A solid draft, although I can’t say I’ve ever heard of Brandon Washington.

Yeah this was a pretty dang good one.
I myself would go with David Wilson or Chris Polk, but i’m a running back psycho. I wouldn’t at all be mad if our draft went down like this.
If the Eagles are in a position to draft Kuechly, then I’d say that they’re in a fantastic position to fill their needs.
Follow Bleeding Green Nation on Twitter & Facebook.
The question is....will they?
It couldn’t have been anymore blatant than it was this year that a LB was needed. Only safety could be argued to be a less stable position, but if Kuechly is there I’m wondering would Reid even consider it? Because we all knows he cares less than 0 about that position.
To be honest, if we are in position to take Kuechly and Reid trades down/out of the first round or picks a player we obviously don’t need….I might never forgive him.

I’m a huge fan of Polk and think he fits perfectly with what the Broncos wanna do. That’s the selection I’d make with that pick although the Broncos need CB’s really really bad.
And now for something completely different

Browns
Unfortunently for Carolina draft wise, that win yesterday moved you out of the #4 spot and this is where Clevelnad will be. They do not stand a chance on winning against both Baltimore and Pittsburgh. So, you will see them trade out of this spot, the only question is with who and for whom. I See RGII here, and I see Wash, Miami, Seattle, KC, & Big D here trying to make a trade that will benefit them. RGIII will benefit them, but its gonna cost them more than Julio did to Atlanta. The chance for a few of these teams to upgrade that spot instantly and compete on a higher level will make it a reality. 5 to 6 draft picks, with none being lower than a #3 will be the price. Now we just see who’s gonna pay to get the prize.
Browns need a QB
If anything they will be trading up to make sure they come away with a franchise QB. They cant waste another year with Colt McFrye or on some free agent journeyman.
Thats still up in the air, Coly is going to used for at least another year. Maximize your draft position, and add extra quality draft picks, not like 4 – 7 picks either. Moving into the 4th spot with Barkley announcing that he’s gonna stay @ USC, Clevelands got another shot at adding more quality with a trade down or 2 depending on which team makes the trade and what is offered.
"Excuse me while I ride my unicorn over to the gentleman’s club my wife doesn’t mind me visiting and doing coke off a hooker’s ass." - Henry Dawg , DBN - Dec 2011
I don’t see them trading out again this year. I guess its possible, but we are in dire need of playmakers. If RG3 or Blackmon is there, like in the draft above, I’m sure we’ll take one of them. I definitely don’t agree with the mock above that we would take Richardson while RG3 and Blackmon are on the board. I could see RG3 with the first pick, and whatever the top WR is left with our second first round pick. Then in the second the best OL or LB on the board.
For the Seahawks
Oof. This would be a disappointing, but not unlikely, draft.
DeCastro might find a place on the OL, we don’t really have any guys that really need replacing at the moment. C Unger is playing pretty solid, the two rookies (RG Moffitt and RT Carpenter) looked like they improved over the course of the year and LT Okung was playing like a franchise LT before he went down. Gallery is old, injury-prone and played poorly to start the year, but it seems a little premature to replace the guy. So yes, this is a luxury pick, but I wouldn’t rule it out.
Landry Jones doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in me (even in the middle of the 2nd). He seems like a 1-read guy that struggles when pressured or forced to improvise. While the whole Seahawks fanbase would likely riot if we passed on a QB in the first 2 rounds, I think it’s a definite possibility, given the options available.
I’ve got no clue who we’re going to draft this year, am expecting to be disappointed (like after the 2011 draft) and am just hoping we come up with a couple of gems like we did this year (Sherman, Wright, Baldwin, etc).

To be honest, I had Brandon Weeden in Rd. 2 for Seattle. That seems like an ideal situation for him. But then I remembered since Jones hasn’t declared either way I went with him, for now.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
I would be much happier with Weeden
I wouldn’t draft Jones in the 7th, I also don’t really see a way the Seahawks stay in the middle of the first round, they either trade up for a QB or trade down for more picks.
I gotta say if I were a seahawks fan, I know it's a stretch,.....
But I’d be shit eate happy if this were the draft. DeCastros better than Gallery, now. And Jones in the second? I’d hate you guys even worse than I already do if your draft went this way.

Dan, what do you think of all those second-round WRs? Is it a strong group?
I think the Titans will give strong consideration to drafting a WR high, somewhere in the first three rounds, preferably in the top 2.

Chargers would take this
Not sure 5T is a need but the pick is solid. Him and Irvin I would take as the first two picks right now. Also V Martin has improved every year, so there’s little to suggest he could regress. The contrary would appear more likely at this point. There’s also Castillo who should be brought back at a decent rate next year and the 2011 pick Liuget. Also the Broncos went to a 4 man front, Still is still a nice pick though
Winning
I think
The only way the chargers take Quinton Coples is if they switch to a 4-3, even then I see them taking BPA out of strong-side OLB, CB or OG. We need defensive playmakers in my opinion and one guy I’m big on is Whitney Mercilus, led the country in sacks (14.5), forced fumbles (9) and was 6th in tackles for loss per game. I would trade back to from the 15th (or so pick that we’ll have) to get him, at the moment he’s projected late first round, but I think he’ll increase his stock over the combine, pro-days etc and be right around that 13-19 middle of the first round area where we’ll be picking.
This draft is really screaming for another trade down for them.
For a team that didn’t do that well this season (record wise at least), they don’t have a ton of glaring holes. QB and OT are the two big needs, and it’s pretty easy to envision a situation in which neither of those positions would provide value at their pick in the first round. I can’t really see them using an early pick on a NT unless they are really THAT unsatisfied with Powe.

Jason Garrett is very particular with character
and Jerry Jones seems to be deferring to Garrett (so far at least – last year reports had it that Jones wanted to trade down from #9), so I don’t think they will pick Jenkins unless his coaches vouch for him. After last years draft, Garrett kept talking about having the “right kind of guy” and about talking to the college coaches. I realize Jones could push for Jenkins and if the scouts love him, it could happen. If it were me, I’d guess Konz in the 1st and Boykin in the 2nd. Or Dennard in the 1st if he grades out that well and Zeitner or Barron in the 2nd. Garrett has ties to the offensive coordinator at Wisconson and took an O-lineman from Wisconson last year. O-line isn’t a huge need, but one G is 33 and the other interior linemen are either average below average veterans or young and unproven. Regarding Elam, I think he is more valuable to Dallas than elsewhere since he knows Ryan’s defense and sets up the secondary. Just my 2 cents.

Really don't like it for the Pats
Pats aren’t going to take a CB high with Arrington having a nice year and 2 top 33 picks in McCourty and Dowling (yes, underachieving and injured respectively)
Really love Ingram, but Belichick isn’t going to go for a 6’2 edge player early. He’s almost too strict with his 6’3 or 6’4 and long arms prototype
I don’t like Ta’amu as a 2-gap prospect (or in general to be honest). If the Pats stick with a 4-3, unlikely with Andre Carter’s injury and questionable status for 2012, maybe Ta’amu makes sense
McNutt isn’t really the type of WR the Pats covet.

horriblel mock
Whats the point of making a mock draft when the draft order is outdated?
Also some of these picks are ridiculous. The Browns need a QB, they arent going to waste a pick on a running back when good running backs are a dime a dozen and available in every round. Even if they didnt like any of these quarterbacks and wanted to let Colt McFrye spend another year dinking and dunking the team to another 4 win season, they wouldnt pass on an elite WR like Blackmon.
OK dude.
How can a mock be horriblel (Im assuming this means worse than horrible). It’s a mock and he even admitted they could go either way. You’re basically dissing the entire draft because you don’t like your teams pick. You’re being a heckler, that’s all.

The Browns arent even my team. The point is that the Browns wanted to draft a WR last year but Atlanta offered them a great deal to trade down. Its pretty obvious that McFrye stinks and the Browns will need a new quarterback, as well as an elite receiver. This mock has them passing on both a quarterback and a wide receiver, which are their biggest needs on offense.
Just make your own mock then.

by rockthenation on Dec 20, 2011 12:38 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I agree
I at least think Egnew goes within the first two rounds. He is basically an Aaron Hernandez clone with 5 inches on him. He is gonna run a 4.59-4.62 40 comes draft time. He didn’t catch 90 balls this year because James Franklin is a running QB, but he still looked every bit as good. He has the body to become a solid run blocker and even displayed some skill blocking this year. I think he will be a great pro. He has 1st round talent but will get picked later because he is a TE from Missouri. Every fan, and even Dan, may point out Chase Coffman. But Chase ran a 4.85-4.95 40 on most days. I was shocked he was selected in the 3rd. He did run a solid 40 around draft time of somewhere around 4.78 but I was still shocked. I would love for the Chiefs to grab Egnew in the 2nd. He has put on a ton of muscle this year, and I think he will be hard to guard with his blend of size and speed.
Did you know Eric Berry was asexually produced by Chuck Norris?
As for Dom
A lot will depend on his position drills during the All Star games and combine. Also, where do NFL GMs see him? I see him as a 4-3 NT. But, alot of 4-3 teams don’t use a NT. I see him best lining up over the C and clogging the middle. It’s his perfect position imo. That can either hurt or help him. Does a team that does use it reach for him? Or do they wait? Also, we don’t know if he can play in the 3-4. He definitely didn’t look like a 5 Tech to me. I could see him playing LDE in a 3-4 defense, lining up over the RT may help him generate a pass rush. To me, he is to one dimensional to be a lock for the first two rounds, but could easily see him getting picked shortly after.

To be fair to Ocho...
…he’s comparable to the #4 receiver on the team (#1 Welker, #2 Hernandez, #3 Branch, Gronk as the TE). Of course, he could have done more, and was brought in to do more, but he’s playing as a #4. Donald Driver is essentially the Packers #4 and he has 364 yards. Ocho has 261, so it’s not that crazy.
But yeah, they need a better receiver for the future. I might take WR Dwight Jones over Chase Minnifield because the Patriots don’t need a cornerback as much as they need a safety. McCourty has been on an upswing, while Arrington has been solid. Rookie Ras-I Dowling is on the injured reserve, but he looked dominant. I think they give him another chance. The only defensive back the Patriots might draft in the first few rounds would be a safety.
Maybe the Pats could go for Jeffery and have Ingram drop to the next pick- seems like a more positive outcome for those picks.
As for the second round, I’m not sure where Ta’amu fits on their defensive line. If it’s the 3-4, he’s better off at the nose and that displaces Wilfork and if he’s at the end, I don’t think he has the frame to be more successful than Deaderick, Brace, or Love (could be just as, but the Patriots will only pick a player if he will be an improvement over another).
I could see them go McDonald or Martin and then Ben Jones with the second 2nd rounder.
Still, very nice draft.
I think I’ve fallen in love with the thought of Ta’amu playing end in a 3-4. It’s scary how much I like the thought of it.
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
How's his length?
Because I know he’s wide (could be Ngata), but the successful 3-4 DEs are mainly strong anchor guys with large wingspans.

I'll lay off the comments on the draft order being outdated
for the sake of repeating what’s been bleated at you several time before- though honestly, unless my Bucs win two in a row (HA!), we’re not picking 9th. 5th or 6th, depending on whether the Jaguars win again.
Good sense of the Bucs’ needs- LB and CB, BVA, all the way.
Eight straight losses and counting- time to go, Raheem.
I think unless Claiborne falls to us or a linebacker shoots up draft boards after the combine,
we should trade back a few spots to the 11-15 range. At that spot we could mostly likely still land Kuechly, which would let Foster move outside and take the playcalling abilities off him, allowing him to play faster. And we should be able to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick if we move back that far.
by flash_kiley on Dec 20, 2011 8:23 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
A few things - sorry for the length
I really like the picks for my Colts. So long as we hold onto the first pick we will be taking Luck. In the second picking a cornerback who is even league average in his first year would go a huge way to solving our defensive problems. Though the common conception is that we have a horrid run defense is misleading. We are 12th best in the league in YPC against but are run on the most, at almost 34 attempts a game, and therefore have racked up huge yardage against numbers. This is because the offense has allowed us to get behind in almost every game and our pass defense cant get the opposing offense of the field in third down passing situations. Having Denard, Minniefield, Gilmore, etc and Power returning as a #2 we might actually have a passable Cover-2 pass defense.
They would be fine going after a running back or linebacker.
I have to disagree here. Connor and Angerer have been two of our best players on defense this year and have contributed to a suprisingly decent run defense. Wheeler, Edds or Sims all are just fine at strong side and one or two should return next year. With the emergance of Brown (which I think has to do with improved line play – he has a dangerous burst through holes but can’t make holes too often by himself), the power back compliment of Carter and the possiblity of Addai sticking around make running back a low priorty on a team with more than just a couple needs. I would rank our needs in order: (QB), CB, SS, WR, OG/C, DT, SLB.
With the Browns losing and looking a tough schedule we can likely think of them with the #4 pick. I think they have to and will pick Barkley there (or even move up to #2 to make sure nobody else moves up for him) because he is a home run fit for their offense and someting that franchise needs. There is talent on that team but things would fall in place if they hit on a star WCO QB.
I think RGIII is a great pick for Miami as he is the ‘excitement’ they are looking for and he is a good football fit. They might even trade up quite a bit for him. I get the feeling that the Redskins wont get, or try really hard to get, one of the Luck/Barkley/RGIII group but will instead pick a lineman on either side of the ball like Martin/Rieff/DeCastro or Coples as a 3-4 end who can rush the passer.
Jason Heyward wins at baseball.
Bucs
I’m going to assume we traded down to #9 so I don’t complain about the draft order.
I like Kirpatrick there. I’d take Kuechly over him, but it is close. Both are great players at a position we’re desperate at. I’m not a Burfict fan, but I’d probably take him too in the 2nd. Maybe Boykin instead, but Burfict is definitely a better talent if he can keep his head on straight.
Yugly.
Boykin would be a great pick! Probably more of a third round pick.
But he is a great athlete and should run well, so the combine will likely push him to the second. And he doubles as a return man, so he can help us out in a couple ways.
by flash_kiley on Dec 20, 2011 8:25 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
He's definitely on my radar
If we end up not taking a corner in the first we’re going to HAVE to look for one in the second.
Yugly.
Ram "Dream Scenario"
The Rams would do better to eliminate the spread offense and go back to the WC System; a less conservative WC version. TST writer RG31; wrote an outstanding article on this topic; Dec 17, 2011. Kalil is not the only option for the Rams.
“No matter who picks second in the draft, Kalil will be the choice. He’s a franchise left tackle who should start for a decade and be really good. I’m not quite as high on Kalil’s potential greatness, but he profiles as a Pro Bowl” Your quote is a contradiction; if Kalil is a " franchise LOT; why are you not “not quite as high on Kalil’s potential greatness”? The Rams can do better than this.
Without free agents being figured in....
you think we need a position more important than LT? I gotta say I first wanted playmakers because I’m tired of seeing O-linemen bust for us, but we can’t stop drafting them now. We’re stuck trying to find ways to protect Bradford until we get it right.
I wanted to hold off on drafting Bradford, and this was a key reason. By picking him up it handcuffed our draft philosophy to picking up protection. I didn’t even like it knowing we had picked up Smith. I knew he wasn’t enough even if he wasn’t a bust. Oh well we got Bradford anyway. Now we’re committed. We’re paying him way too much to put any other priority above his protection. We set ourselves back 1 year for every year that we don’t fix this problem. Hopefully this is the last year, but it won’t be if we don’t blow O-line out of the water as a team need this off-season.
Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf
I will say this I'd rather wait to draft anymore WRs
Like them or not we have that position covered. We can’t afford to pass on DT any longer IMO I’d take Worthy, or Brandon Thompson in that order if they were available. I wish we were a 3-4 defense though. Poe would be a great NT to convert to 3-4 around.
Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf
I think he means there is a difference in a franchise left tackle and a hall of fame left tackle.
Donald Penn, Chad Clifton, Jordan Gross are franchise left tackles- someone who does an above average job with consistency for a long period of time. Guys like Orlando Pace and Jonathan Ogdan are HOF left tackles- guys that are considered the best at there position for a long period of time.

Cardinals
I actually have some interest in the Cards taking Adams, but he seems like a reach right there. But then again, I certainly don’t want Osemele or Glenn there.
Would OLB’s Ingram or Upshaw be a better BPA/need pick? I like our guards, but would going strict BPA and grabbing DeCastro make more sense?
I haven't heard too much about Adams yet
Mainly because I’ve had my focus on the Top 10 picks before our recent winning streak.
I definitely saw a shift in last years draft that points towards more of a BPA style draft, however I definitely see them picking up an OL in the first, even if it means trading down a little bit to get a 2nd round pick back. In that scenario, it might be a good fit picking up Adams or Osomele later in the 1st.
Faith Focus Finish
I
would think that they only way they could move down is if Blackmon were available. With Barkley staying in school, there shouldn’t be any QB’s worth moving up for.
I hope they can trade down to regain a 2nd rounder, but it seems unlikely right now.

I like the pick. Still reminds me of a young Trvevor Pryce where he could play DT and some DE. That would be nice to get back. Though I have to ask about Dennard, why has his stocked dropped so quickly? If he drops to the second round I could see the broncos trading up to get him. Don’t know that we will draft a C that early. Gurode looked very impressive in his limited snaps at C and I think we may resign him for a year or two and develop a C. I would prefer Burfict because Ray may be done after this year. I don’t mind the 2nd pick if we don’t go MLB, but if we do it would probably be a ball hawking S, project LT or one of the other C’s there.

i know why you used last weeks order what i dont understand is how the afc can have the last 4 picks when the last picks goes to the superbowl teams one from afc and one from nfc
I don’t think you’ll find a lot of Browns fans liking the Richardson pick. Love the guy, think he will be a legit back, but I think in the end that we’ll have Hillis back next year with Brandon Jackson/ Chris OhBananas playing behind him. I think there is absolutely zero chance we pass on Blackmon at the pick we will likely have. I also think QB is a very good possibility, but we may hold off on that one another year. I know I would be happy with RGIII or Blackmon.
Also- What do you think the chances are that the Colts trade out of that #1 spot? I think if there is a chance then the Browns would be in the best position to trade up for it.
Great stuff Dan
It’s not easy identifying the needs of every NFL team while staying consistent with drafting philosophies. I know that you said that the order is not updated as it is likely to change week to week; however, this order is not even possible. There is no NFC East team in spots 21-32 (the playoff spots and by default one of those teams must make the playoffs)
If Dallas lets Konz pass them by after their interior O-line problems this year, there will be blood
Really…the next Alex Mack and they want to take a CB?
Also, I doubt Mercilus lasts as long as you suggest. His post-season workouts coupled with his production will see him compared with other 3-4 OLB’s who can bend the corner.
"Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?"
Excellent work man
glad you pay attention. There can be some real ugly drafts out there.

Case Keenum?!?
You really think Case Keenum won’t go in the first 2 rounds?? His career stats are amazing. And he topped it off going 45 of 69 for 532 yards with 3 tds and no picks. I honestly think he should be the 2nd qb taken. I’m no houston fan but I don’t know why he is so over-looked.
