Rock out with your 2012 NFL mock draft out: Todd McShay puts out first mock

Todd McShay of ESPN's Scout's Inc. released his first mock for the 2012 NFL Draft today. (Sorry some/most of you, this is In$ider content)There are few surprises at the top — Andrew Luck, Matt Kalil and Morris Claiborne fill the top three.

The first pick that really stuck out was McShay putting North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples in the top five, to the Jacksonville Jaguars. If you've read this site at all during the 2011 season, you know my feelings on Coples. He's a very good power end who may not have the initial burst to beat quick tackles to edge.

From a greed standpoint, I also wanted to compare my mock with McShay's. After all, I imagine he gets paid quite a bit to do this. To my surprise, McShay and I had 11 picks the same, though some of them were guys I had in the second round. That includes running back David Wilson to the Lions and quarterback Landry Jones to the Seahawks.

My favorite thing about mocks (and McShay's is no different) is the comments. If you don't have an agreeable pick, instantly you're a hackish, unintelligent, knuckle-dragging a-hole who obviously not only doesn't watch college or pro football, but you enjoy ballet and some other unmanly endeavor.

So, check out McShay's mock draft here. Show your Internet toughness in the comments here and there. If you do it and tell them you came from Mocking the Draft, Santa will give you an extra manly gift this year.

Claiborne ?

Is Matthieu going back to LSU or something ?

reagrdless Mathieu is not much of an NFL prospect IMO

guy is tiny and is going to be a decent NFL safety at best. Sure he was incredible in college, but he is going to be one of those guys who won’t be able to keep it up in the NFL

There is always a place for speed and athleticism

Mathieu is small. He also has 6 sacks and 11 forced fumbles in 2 years, so he gets the physical part done. If you are looking for someone to cover Welker, Harvin, or DeSean Jackson and other similar players, this guy is it.

Sounds like a perfect fit as a...

nickleback or an outside corner in a cover-2 scheme

and he was a safety

additionally, sure he was a very good ballplayer, but would you say he was worth a top 5 pick. my point is that to comment

Claiborne ?

Is Matthieu going back to LSU or something ?

indicates someone thinking Mathieu warrants the pick over Claiborne, and that is just a stupid tihng to beleive when one guy can step in and be a #1 CB on a team, whereas the other MIGHT be a good saftey at the NFL level.

Bishop probably was a top 5 worthy pick after his career was over yea

and what I said was more in like with the “Mathieu is not and NFL prospect” part. He is. Its really obvious. He is better then Claiborne too. Will he be a top 5 pick? Probably not, but I bet in more then a few of those re-drafts they have the next year and after, he will be.

to me

Coples reminds me too much of Derrick Harvey, I don’t see him being able to get to the quarterback at the next level

Exactly

A guy with less than elite speed off the end probably shouldnt go in the top 5 and especially to a team in the Jags who like to pick safe bets. After Harvey, the Jags will probably be very scared to take Coples just like they are scared to take first round WRs after their past history.

I don’t see the Jaguars taking Coples over Blackmon.

McCshay

Not sure why he believes the Browns will take a RB that high when they have two 1st’s. They can get one in the 20’s… maybe even Richardson, still.

Yeah that is horrible pick by McShay for the Browns, especially with players like Blackmon, RGIII and such still around there.

Lions

a RB in the 1st rd? Really?

Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!

why are they paying this guy?

I don’t understand it either. Jahvid’s a former 1st rounder, LeShoure’s a 2nd and Kevin Smith has played pretty well since coming back. Much bigger needs and players worth that pick. Give me an offensive lineman or a corner.

Follett you were a beast but I must move on. Let's get on it Mr. Young.

Hey, I totally see where you're coming from...

…But when Mayhew took Fairley, making it back to back years that he selected a DT in the 1st Round, he made it apparent that he drafts on a BPA basis (and not on a NEED basis, per your rationale). Of course there are exceptions (he wouldn’t select another QB because of Stafford, for example), but I wouldn’t count out the possibility of ANY position being drafted, including RB.

I've posted this before, but I'll do it again...

Here are the RB’s on the Lions roster:

1. Jahvid Best – Major injury history due to concussions. He has said he’ll be back in 2012, however you have to be concerned about his long-term health and career status.
2. Mikel Leshoure – Tore his achilles in training camp. 1/3 of all players who have a similar injury never play again. As of Dec 9th Leshoure wasn’t even cleared to run yet, and that injury happened on Aug 8th. His health is a huge wildcard in this whole “Will they draft another RB?!?” debate, and only the Lions will know how well he’s rehabbing.
3. Kevin Smith – K Smooth has been a great story this year, but don’t forget that he was originally let go by the lions due to his injury history. And even with him on the roster the Lions chose to upgrade and select a RB 2 years in a row.
4. Maurice Morris – He’s been a true professional and provides excellent depth, but at 32 years old he’s over-the-hill in RB years.
5. Keiland Williams – He hasn’t shown much this year, and if brought back in 2012 it would most likely be only in the short-yardage role he’s currently in.

So, after breaking it down, things look pretty dicey on the RB depth chart. Mayhew has shown a BPA draft strategy since taking over as GM, and if a RB is the BPA when the Lions are on the clock, don’t doubt that Mayhew selects said RB. He’s taken a DT in the 1st Round followed by a RB in the 2nd round two years running; and he won’t be afraid to use a high draft pick on a RB again. All this being said, personally I’m not too high on David Wilson, but I digress…
