Akeem Ayers NFL Draft scouting report

Photo

Akeem Ayers
6'4, 256 pounds | Outside linebacker | UCLA

Coverage:
Ayers can man up tight ends underneath and has good instincts to break on the ball. He clearly has enough agility to flip his hips and running with backs and tight ends. Reads quarterbacks well in zone coverage.

Instincts: UCLA lined Ayers up in several different spots. He's played on the strong side and weak side. He's played with a hand in the ground but is mainly used out of a two-point stance. He was mostly used near the line of scrimmage, but was asked at times to drop back in coverage. Reads the play action nicely and knows when to stay at home.

Pass rush: Ayers is still developing as a pass rusher because UCLA didn't call a lot of blitzes for their linebackers. Because of that, he's raw and doesn't have consistent pass rush technique. At times he'll get low around the edge, but needs to do it on a more-frequent basis. Right now, Ayers is a speed rusher with developmental potential.

Star-divide

Pursuit: Gets up to top speed in a hurry and rarely takes false steps. Has the speed to chase down the ball carrier long. reportedly has ran the 40-yard dash in as low as 4.64 seconds. Likes to work around traffic instead of through it.

Quickness: Displays good quickness off the snap and can explode past offensive linemen. Ayers' first step shows he could develop into a pass rusher in the future.

Run defense: Ayers is good against the run when he's lined up at the line of scrimmage and can speed past blockers. When he can, Ayers is good containing the outside rush. But when he has to handle blockers, Ayers has trouble maintaining the edge and will get walled off.

Strength: Ayers has a lot of bulk on his frame, but he needs to get stronger. When playing off the line of scrimmage, he doesn't have enough strength to attack and disengage from linemen. Looks like he can carry at least 10 more pounds of bulk.

Tackling: Is a solid fundamental tackler who wraps up and drives through the ball carrier. Isn't necessarily a devastating hitter. Will sometimes let his technique slip and get too high tackling.

Final word: Most simply look at Ayers' size – 6-foot-4, 256 pounds – and automatically assume he's a perfect fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. However, he hasn't quite developed as the pass rusher many expected.

That is partly to do with the UCLA defensive scheme. It often required Ayers to drop back in coverage instead of always working upfield. In the long run, that should make him a better all-around player. He's a true three-down linebacker, with size too. But a team looking for pass rush help may have to wait a year or two as Ayers comes along.

Ayers projects as a strong-side linebacker in a 4-3 scheme or an inside linebacker in a 3-4. His play is reminiscent of former Florida State linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

In 12 starts in 2010, Ayers had 68 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions. He has had 10 sacks over the last two seasons. Was a team captain as a junior.

That is a source of lively debate [to put it mildly] on the Lions site.

Dan, any word on his intangibles like leadership, work ethic, motor, intelligence?

I am not hearing much about that on any scouting reports but detractors like to throw that out there when they call him a bust and not a first round talent. Again, mostly on the Lions site [Pride of Detroit].

I am curious about his overall strength

It does not seem like he is very strong.

This is something he does have to improve.

Team captain in 2010. Would have been again 2011. So that answers some about the leadership. Solid everywhere else, as far as I can gauge.

I guess some view him as not being dynamic based on his stats. That leads people to believing he’s lazy I guess. I don’t see it.

lol

I’d take Ayers at the SAM or Von Miller at the WILL.
I don’t think either will be there when the Lions pick

lol. Waiting to see Ayers and Miller at the combine

I think Miller will be gone, But Ayers still could be there. Keeping an open mind on all possible picks. Including Ayers.

Looks like Manny Lawson 2.0.

Good coverage OLB, but not a pass rusher.

Semi-serious hopeful 49ers mock: 1-Petersen (CB) 2-Aldon Smith (3-4OLB) 3-Ponder (QB) 4A-P. Taylor (NT) 4B-Fua (NT/DE) 5-Marecic (FB) 6-Henery (K/P) 7a-Burney (CB/ST) 7b-Noel Devine (KR/PR/COPrb)

wondering that my self

concerning that he can’t take on blocks, but nice that he can cover. Miller seems to be the more polished 3-4 OLB prospect but Ayers appears to have a higher ceiling.

Trust me, I have no idea either.

Was a team captain as a junior so maybe he is an option for the Jaguars (*roles eyes…)

I wouldn’t have a problem with him going #19. He fills arguably the Giants biggest need and might be worth it the pick. But I wouldn’t exactly be throwing a fit if he gets picked before us.

I’ve seen him compared to Chad Greenway…but I’ve also seen the Keith Rivers, Aaron Curry parts.

More so I’ve read up on him seems the latter of more true than the former. Greenway was technically sound while the others got by more so on being the best athlete on the field most games, like Ayers.

an athletic LB with few intangibles?

that reads bust all over it. Someone will take him in the first, but it’ll be a mistake

by DBroncs1414 on Feb 1, 2011 2:22 PM EST reply actions

Intangibles

are the most overrated thing in sports. If scouts believed that BS too much then it’s like they’d rather have Tim Tebow than Vick 3 years ago.

I dont agree with said statement, at all, especially from the LB position

the best LB’s in the league are guys that weren’t really freaks athletically but know the gamre so well. I’m talking about guys drafted in the 2nd-3rd rounds (i.e.: Curtis Lofton, Demeco Ryans, Laurinitis, etc.). Most of these LBs that are touted as “freaks” usually struggle to see the field and never have the same impact as the guy with the intangibles.

by DBroncs1414 on Feb 1, 2011 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

and seriously can we stop with the Tebow stuff

yes I’m a Denver fan and I love Tebow and think he can be successful, but why take shots at me for that? I’m here to talk draft, not Tebow.

there couldn't be more of a false statement.

if it was true, Boss Bailey would be better than his brother. Ernie Sims wouldn’t suck. Aaron Ross would be an elite corner. Brandon Jacobs would have a clue. Jeff George would be the GOAT. Derrick Harvey would be the best pass rusher in the league.

Need I go on? Intangibles aren’t tangible, but a player most certainly does suck if he lacks them no matter how talented he is.

Vick also has intangibles. His pocket awareness is some of the best in the NFL.

Ayers is much more like Aaron Curry than he is Brian Urlacher. Why? Intangibles. Don’t like it..sorry.

by Rorschach44 on Feb 1, 2011 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Vick, great pocket awareness? You really think so?

For a guy who is supposed to be so elusive why does he get sacked so much?
In 2010 he was sacked at a rate of 8.4% while Kolb was 7.4%.

In 2003 he only started four games and had a sack rate of 8.3%. The two QBs who took over for him had rates of 7.3% and 4.2%. They were terrible, only won two games, but did not get sacked as often as Vick.

His career sack rate is 9.5% which is ridiculously high. With his great mobility and speed, I think you could make a great case that he has absolutely awful pocket awareness.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 1, 2011 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Vick gets sacked cuz he tries to run

for him its not so much the Peyton Manning pocekt awareness. More so the F it I’m running pocket awareness.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Feb 1, 2011 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

He still gets sacked a lot.

So he either sucks as a runner [I don’t think I would say that] or he is not aware of what is going on around him so gets bottled up and sacked before he can utilize his great running skills.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 1, 2011 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

Vick

He is holding on to the ball and trying not to run it so people take him seriously as a QB. Instead of running down the field he is running out into the flat and trying to buy time for the WRs.

by ct17 on Feb 2, 2011 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

Is that why he got sacked like crazy in Atlanta too?

Point is drafting an athletic QB to avoid getting sacked a lot is a foolish idea. You want a QB that can read the entire field quickly, make smart, fast decisions, has a quick release, and has enough mobility to avoid the rush a little. Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Sam Bradford, all have enough athleticism to avoid the initial rush. You don’t have to have 4.3 speed and be a punt returner back there.

by NorthLeft12 on Feb 3, 2011 8:15 AM EST up reply actions

I would like to see the Saints go after him

I wonder what Gregg Williams could do with a versatile LB like Ayers. Ayers also sounds like he would fit better for a 4-3 defense if he does not hold the edge well.

Bills/Giants

I would like for the Bills to drop down and get him.
If not then the Giants should grab him.

Etiher team wins getting this talent.

by Dziedzic on Feb 1, 2011 4:34 PM EST reply actions

Def won't be playing in a 2 gap 3-4 D
But when he has to handle blockers, Ayers has trouble maintaining the edge and will get walled off.

Timmons had that same concern coming out of FSU.

I don’t mean to puff my chest, but I really like that comparison. Timmons was an athletic college OLB with some flaws. He’s been very good as an ILB in the 3-4 after a few years of development.

by Dan Kadar on Feb 1, 2011 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

New name? Alright!

Ninja’s talking about him becoming a 3-4 OLB. I agree that he won’t be a good 3-4 OLB, but I think he’ll make a great 4-3 OLB/3-4 ILB. He can cover, can rush on occasion and can jam the run in the open. He has the size.

by Richard Hill on Feb 1, 2011 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

if he falls

to #19 for the Giants, I’d be thrilled

mmmmm.... delicious

by Cup Noodles on Feb 1, 2011 6:51 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully the Giants avoid him

scouting reports are always subjective I guess, so I can’t complain but I’d say akeem ayers has average instincts. i can understand the argument that he’s pass rushing a lot in used in different ways but, overall, his read & react skills and instincts are nowhere naer the level of some of the other linebackers in this draft class (mason foster, mark herzlich). He reminds me a lot of aaron curry in that he made a lot of plays on athleticism alone. I would prefer the Giants to get a linebacker with intelligence and instincts and hopefully he has athleticism to match that (unlikely but hey). I think lions fans are dead on and as a giants fan I would agree, I don’t want my team anywhere near this kid. Hopefully they dont draft him at all
