Jimmy Smith NFL Draft scouting report
Jimmy Smith
6'2, 205 pounds | Cornerback | Colorado
Agility: Despite being a good athlete, Smith doesn't seem to have the kind of quick-twitch movements that the best corners seem to have. He's more deliberate in his movements and will sometimes lose balance adjusting himself to work laterally. This showed especially when Smith went up against Georgia's A.J. Green in October. Green got Smith turned around on a few occasions and he wasn't quick enough to recover.
Ball skills: May not have the best of hands, but knows how to get his body in position to make a play on the ball. Uses his long arms to his advantage here reach around receivers to bat the ball away. Had only two interceptions over his last two seasons of college football.
Instincts: When he's lined up in man coverage, Smith shows good awareness of route progression which allows him to mirror receivers. Likes to be aggressive and push guys around in the first five yards.
Man coverage: Excels in man coverage when he's asked to play tight to the line of scrimmage. Smith likes to use his long arms to jam and redirect receivers. According to Colorado, Smith thrown at just 20 times while in man coverage in 2010. Of those, he allowed one touchdown, but broke up five passes.
Size: Smith's size is what most often garners him comparisons to Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders. Smith is a big corner with long limbs and power. He's not quite as thickly built as Patrick Peterson, but he has a safety frame for a cornerback. Has a frame that can hold more weight, especially in his upper body.
Speed: Has reportedly run the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds. Plays fast and can run with a lot of wide receivers deep. Will sometimes get too ahead of himself in pursuit and run himself out of tackles. Moves around fast enough to make up for when he's out of position.
Tackling: Is a strong tackler who is technically sound in his wrap-up. Won't always take good angles nor does he attack the line of scrimmage all that well.
Zone coverage: At Colorado, Smith was used much more in man coverage. When he was asked to play the zone, he shows good patience to let a play develop around him. Has a good feel for when to switch off coverage. Will sometimes be late locating the ball in zone coverage.
Final word: Smith is a two-year starter cornerback on the right side for the Buffaloes. According to the university, Smith only allowed 11 completions while in man coverage during his junior and senior seasons. Those kind of numbers make up for a lack of interceptions (three for his career).
Smith has good speed and knows how to use it. Against Hawaii in 2010, Smith chased down a ball carrier who had nearly 20 yards on him. The senior plays best in man coverage but shows good awareness in zone play.
With his combination of coverage ability and size, Smith should get taken in the first 20 selections.

If Smith goes to a team like GB or any one that plays that sort of press coverage
he’ll be the next Asomugha.
If he goes to a team that plays more Tampa 2 and zone coverage, he’ll probably be a bust.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Bold
Are you saying that because your a chargers fan and know he will victimize your team on the broncos for years to come?
No I am saying that cause I think Jimmy Smith will be good
My favorite corner last year was McCourty for whatever that’s worth. I like guys that are versatile and tackle well. They seem to always turn into good pros. And the Broncos wont be victimizing anyone for a number of years they have nobody playing defense. They would need about the first 5 picks in the draft just to fix it
IMO
I love jimmy smith too
Peterson is a rare breed, 6’2 220 with possibly sub 4.4 speed. He also brings tremendous value in the return game.
He might squeak in the bottom of the 1st...
but with 3 other CBs going ahead of him, it might be early in the second…we’ll see.

Pass
Bust written all over him (if selected early)… he’ll be an average DB…maybe even switch from CB to SS
not worth a top 20 pick IMO that’s for sure … He should be picked after the 3rd Round, but will prob get picked somewhere around the late 1st to mid 3rd round..unfortunately..

He’ll get abused by most of the better WRs in the league!
Fire Quin Movement!!
Considering I have them ranked Amukamara, Smith, Harris, what do you think?
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
well i just wanted to know 'cause i'm high on harris and i think amukamara could be better as a FS
i haven’t see any play of jimmy smith so i don’t know, right now i would say harris, but people talk a lot about jimmy and he has good size, i want to know more about him, right now i think harris will be better than amukamara but it would take a couple of years, maybe three
It would be really helpful
If you guys added a scouting report tab on the top of the page so we can get access to all the available scouting for the players.

ehhhh
I dont see how he is a top 20 talent
I watched 3 games of him just now and he doesnt look all that to me
in the 2nd yes, because in press coverage he is going to be very good for a team
for his size he looks goofy
he is going to get alot of PI’s in the NFL if he continues to hold and use his hands like that
but I dont see what you guys are seeing saying he is a first round pick
he is not impressive at all really on tape
now Brandon Harris is

I would rate Ras I Dowling higher than Smith too
he is a bigger corner that is way more impressive

This is what Jeff Risdon had to say about Smith.
Colorado played a scheme where he was the wide-side corner. It didn’t matter what receivers they were facing or where they lined up, he went to the wide side of the field. Joe Haden and Darrelle Revis did the same in college so it’s not a big concern.
His tackling is my biggest worry for a guy his size. He’s not a big hitter most of the time and he’s rather push a guy out of bounds than pop him. He racked up a decent amount of tackles though, so it’s not like he’s ineffective, he just could be better. But in coverage I see a lot of Tramon Williams in him. He likes to get that quick jam and then turn and run, and he’s very good at shading to his help. He’s better than Amukamara before the ball is in the air, better at that than Peterson too for that matter. The stat I was given was that he allowed just 12 completions allowed in his last 25 games, including 4 games where the ball was thrown his way one time or less. That’s almost unheard of in college. I watched the Oklahoma game and when Ryan Broyles was on his side of the field he got one catch for 27 yards, and when he was on the other side he caught 8 balls for over 170 yards and 3 TDs, and I think Ryan Broyles will be a very good NFL WR.
he can tackle
idk how thats even a question about him
if you watch his game tape he makes alot of tackles actually
Tramon Williams? idk about that
Smtih is an interesting prospect
not many picks, but locked down his side
is great in press coverage, but the scouting report mentions he played alot of zone
Idk who I would compare him to, thats a little tricky
but i do like his size and coverage skills I just dont think he is an amazing talent like these draft gurus having him as their 2nd overall corner
now I like Brandon Harris, who reminds me of Joe Haden

I found this on POD, courtesy of JCruize.
Got some info on Smith from a diehard Colorado fan last night. First, Smith always played the wide side of the field. Just like Revis and Kyle Wilson did in college. So, not such a minus against Smith in my book.
Secondly, Smith was matched up on AJ Green a few plays. And I was in formed that Green blew by Smith everytime with a double move. Green just never got the ball thrown in his direction. Due to safety help over the top.
Lastly, the famous only allowing 11 receptions in two years, is alittle overblown. That info can from the university itself. It is their "unoffical scoring". I was told that Smith was in zone alot. So if he got beaten deep, they just pinned it on the safety.
This all came from a person from Colorado that I meet at a function me and my wife attended last night. I personally do not know this indiviual. But he seemed pretty knowledgable. He went on to say, that if Smith worked on his technique some more. He could be a very good CB in the NFL. So you can take the info anyway you want. I still retain that I like Harris just alittle more at this time. But would not be disappionted with Smith either.

If he had safety help against Green, then isn’t he correct to be a little more aggressive and bite on the first move? If he didn’t have safety help then that’s a real problem, but, when you’ve got safety help it allows you to drive more aggressively on the underneath routes. I don’t see how this can be held against him. Plus for all we know it could be what he was coached to do against Green.
