PFT: Colin Kaepernick doing full combine workout

If there is one quarterback who should benefit from an athletic showcase like the NFL Scouting Combine, it's Colin Kaepernick.

The Nevada signal caller will get a chance to as he plans on having a full workout in Indianapolis later this month.

"He is absolutely going to do everything at the Combine," Kaepernick’s agent, Scott Smith, told Pro Football Talk Saturday. "He wouldn’t do it any other way."

Star-divide

If you recall, several quarterbacks last year had it any other way and decided not to throw at the combine. That included Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy and even Dan LeFevour .

As PFT writer Evan Silva reports, Kaepernick has run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. To me, a good comparison for Kaepernick is Vince Young. They're both lanky, athletic quarterbacks with an abnormal throwing motion.

Still, that throwing motion worked for Kaepernick in Nevada's pistol offense. As a senior, he completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 3,022 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed the ball for an impressive 1,206 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2010. It was the third year in a row where he ran for 1,100 yards or more.

It also should be noted that more NFL teams are starting to sprinkle pistol plays into their playbook. With that in mind, Kaepernick could be good option for a team looking to transform its playbook.

Of course, he'll have to help himself at the combine. At least he's giving himself the chance to.

I think an important thing for him will be the weigh in

like Bradford last year. Once Bradford weighed in at a solid whatever it was, he was assured the #1 pick. Obviously that won’t be the case with Kaepernick, but a good weigh in will really help his draft stock.

On the throwing though, I think mechanics are overrated. As long as the ball can come out hard and accurate, I dont think it matters too much

With the #2 pick in the 2011 draft, Denver will take Nick Fairley if the Panthers pass on him. If Carolina does take him, the pick will more likely then not be Patrick Peterson. I can assure most mockers that DaQaun Bowers will not be the pick. No offense to him but it would not be smart for the Broncos to draft him. DT/CB need to be addressed way before DE.

Kapernick's release is a bit worrying

if I was looking to draft him – otherwise I think he could be a very good NFL QB. He reminds me a bit of Roethlisberger or pre-injury Danute Culpepper.

Kaepernick

I am glad he is going to do a full work out, but it really tells me nothing that I already don’t know. The kid is going to look great athletically, and he’s going to spin the ball very well. People are going to be highly impressed when they measure his ball velocity when he throws at the combine. He’s definitely got a lot of arm talent and athletic talent.

The release isn’t that big of an issue with me. I have two issues. First, he is going to have to get much better from the pocket to have a chance to start down the road in the NFL. This guy falls apart in the pocket when he gets pressured, but truth be known, if you watch Blaine Gabbert in the pocket, he’s just as bad when pressured. I have seen instances where Kaepernick shows me the ability to read the field when he’s doing a three step drop from where he typically gets the ball. There are times where he knows where the ball is going to go when that back foot hits. It just doesn’t happen enough for me to say that he’s going to make it as a starter, or enough for me to be confident enough to use a first round pick on him.

I think this is a player that teams like Miami who utilize some single wing and pistol concepts in their offense may be able to use as they develop his quarterback skills. He’s going to go higher than I would be comfortable with picking him though. At worst, he’s likely to come off the board in the early second round, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in round one. I hear Miami likes him a lot.

I've heard that Miami plan to move down to try and get back into the 2nd round.

Maybe they’re planning to pick up Kapernick while they’re at it.
