NFL Draft Needs: Dallas Cowboys

Arguably one of the most disappointing teams in 2010, the Dallas Cowboys head into the offseason looking to reload on offense and rebuild on the defensive side of the ball. After starting the season 1-7 under Wade Phillips, Jerry Jones brought the axe down on him and anointed Jason Garrett with the interim tag. Dallas finished 5-3 under Garrett, which was good enough to earn him the permanent position.

One of Garrett’s first tasks this offseason was to find a new defensive coordinator to replace Paul Pasqualoni, who departed to become the head coach at Connecticut. Knowing they needed an experienced set of eyes to take over the defense, the Cowboys hired Rob Ryan who has a daunting task in front of him. Here are some interesting defensive statistics compiled by Mickey Spagnola of DallasCowboys.com from the past season:

 ·         23rd in total defense (26th in passing defense)

·         Gave up 5,628 yards of offense, which is the most in team history

·         Gave up 3,894 net passing yards (1963 was the only time Dallas gave up more)

·         Gave up 436 points, which is the most in team history

·         Gave up 33 passing touchdowns (ties the team record set in 1962)

I think you should have a good idea of where the Cowboys need to improve the most this offseason based on these statistics. Below are the three biggest needs this offseason for Dallas.

Star-divide

1. Cornerback/Safety: Dallas was horrible against the pass in 2010 and it was due in large part to the inconsistent play of Mike Jenkins and Terrence Newman. After an impressive rookie season Jenkins took a step back this past year and Newman isn't getting any younger. With the ninth overall pick don’t surprised to hear Roger Goodell call Prince Amukamara’s name on draft day if he’s available. Although the draft features no elite safeties at the top of the draft, look for that need to be addressed in a later round or through free agency. There will be plenty of interesting options available for Dallas to improve its secondary

2. Offensive tackle: There is no question that the Cowboys’ offensive line improved when Garrett took over as head coach, but additional talent at tackle is needed. Doug Free had a solid year at left tackle, but Marc Colombo remains a liability on the right side with his history of injuries. Like safety, this year’s draft lacks elite tackle prospects, but there is good depth in the position. The Cowboys have to add a solid tackle prospect in round two or three because Alex Barron can’t be relied upon as your third option. Check out our offensive tackle rankings here.

3. Defensive End:  Jay Ratliff alone can’t do everything himself and finding an upgrade at left defensive end should be a priority for the Cowboys. Stephen Bowen, the current starter at LDE, finished 2010 with 16 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. If Dallas chooses to ignore its secondary needs and goes for a defensive end in the first round a few possibilities could be Cameron Jordan , Marcell Dareus or Cameron Heyward. Jordan is coming off a strong Senior Bowl and is now considered one of the best 3-4 defensive end prospects. A sleeper prospect to keep an eye is Robert Quinn of North Carolina, who could play either end or OLB.

As a parting thought, here is David Halprin of Blogging the Boys thoughts on another position the Cowboys might address. "It's a 3-4 defense, so they are always looking for more linebackers. Keith Brooking is getting close to the end of a career at inside linebacker, and besides Sean Lee, they have no depth. And if they can find an OLB they like, they'll add him to the mix. Anthony Spencer has yet to fully-blossom, and again depth is always needed at the position since they'll carry eight or nine linebackers on the roster."

I think OT is the way to go ?

Whenever so many skill positions underachieve (even before the Romo injury ) you have to look at the OL
I currently have Sherrod as the Cowboys pick

PS I read two interesting write-ups about should Dallas now switch back to a 4-3 (with Wade Phillips departure)
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/528991-dallas-cowboys-back-to-4-3
http://dallascowboystimes.com/2010/11/could-the-cowboys-transition-to-a-4-3-defense/

Projected 4-3 defense starting front seven

DT: Jay Ratliff, Josh Brent

DE: DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer

MLB: Bradie James

OLB: Sean Lee, Unknown

I don’t think I agree with the switch, what are your thoughts

I don't see a transition to a 4-3...

As for O-line, Over at BBT we’ve been talking about Tyron Smith at #9 now the reports have came about him being up to 307 pounds. I think he would be the pick if we were to pick an O-linemen at #9.

Rob Ryan is their DC now

he’s had some experience as a 4-3 in Oakland, but largely when he’s allowed to function away from undead owners, he operates with the 3-4.

They might do more different looks than what Wade had, but they’ll have a 3-4, no question.

its a 3-4

more zone, physical, aggressive
Ryan likes to attack
totally different scheme from Wades

by Archie Barberio on Feb 16, 2011 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

lmfao why would we move to a 4-3

after signing ROB RYAN
absolutely makes zero sense to do that
also our personel is all 3-4
to some point I agree with your lineup there, it puts your best players on the field
but Ryan runs 4 man fronts, and alot of creative fronts so you will see interesting personel groupings

by Archie Barberio on Feb 16, 2011 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

not happening my friend rob ryan hiring confirmed we stay on the 3-4

and jerry already said the 3-4 came to stay a long time, we’re not changin at least for 8 years or whenever demarcus ware retires

In the Top 10 you cannot be reaching for need

I don’t think an OL is worth the pick, although maybe I could convince myself that Carimi at RT could go there. But if one of those top 3-4 DEs fall, it would be very hard to pass on them.

Prince Amukamara

The more I read the less I feel good about Prince Amukamara for the Cowboys. The best option for Dallas would be to drop down 4-7 picks and pick up some extra picks. However, if they are stuck at 9, I can see them passing on Amukamara and picking up one of the DE’s (the DE play was atrocious last season, I think the DE’s had zero sacks) and then grabbing someone like the DB from Texas in the second round.

OT

unless Prince Amukamara is there or Robert Quinn
Tyron Smith should be our pick

by Archie Barberio on Feb 16, 2011 5:23 PM EST reply actions

I'd probably put Smith over Amukamara or Quinn

but that’s just me.

Agreed

Unless the price is right to get Patrick Peterson, I totally agree.

Mostly right on the rankings.

The only place I disagree is that I think safety and right tackle are bigger needs than CB.

Free safety is an absolute black hole on our defense in a bad way where we constantly blew coverages and hung our corners out to dry many times. Alan Ball did the unthinkable and was significantly worse than Ken Hamlin last year. Unfortunately, this is a need we will probably have to wait on until the second or third round unless we trade up for Patrick Peterson and convert him to FS.

And at right tackle, I would like to thank Marc Colombo for his time at RT but it has to come to an end. He started losing individual match-ups last year at a surprising rate and was the worst Cowboys starter not named Alan Ball. He was dominated by speed guys and had such a lack of stability and mobility that double moves worked on him with regularity. There is a chance that last year was horrible due to him playing more injured than we knew (after all he did miss the start of the season), but ultimately Dallas cannot put off drafting an offensive lineman high again. Amazingly our offense was still pretty damn good last year even with the line, but with most of them being old there is no reason to expect they will get any better and in fact there is all the reason to expect they will get worse. We need to replace the right side of the line this year in my opinion (Bigg Davis’s contract needs to go for his inconsistent level of play) and drafting a tackle (and hopefully getting a guard in FA) is the way to start this process.

Cornerback for me lies behind both of these positions as needs. They did look pretty bad last year, but I largely believe that was due to many busted coverages by our safeties where our CBs clearly expected help. I also believe that Wade’s scheming was figured out to some extent and he continued to put our CBs in bad positions where they were at a disadvantage playing man-to-man as Wade ineffectually and uncreatively blitzed to try to generate some kind of pressure. Our CBs looked a lot better once we switched to a zone concept even though many of them hadn’t played such a concept in quite a while. Orlando Scandrick specifically seemed to regain the promise he had after his first year. Taking all of this into account, I don’t want a CB at #9 for Dallas unless Patrick Peterson is within range for a trade-up.

Creasy with an excellent breakdown as always, I agree 100%.

+1

Jenkins regressed last year (his 3rd season, not his 2nd season), without question, but he still wasn’t the biggest problem in the secondary. And after one bad season, I’m not ready to give up on him. However, I have zero hope that Alan Ball will improve enough to be a starting FS.

Creasy’s analysis is spot-on. And he still has the best sig in all the SBNation.

yeah those are pretty much our needs

the safety one has been for years, it’s shame there’ no eric berry or earl thomas this year

by ratware on Feb 16, 2011 8:22 PM EST reply actions

Totally agree

I totally agree that all three of these are major positions of need for the Cowboys in the draft. Mike Jenkins seemed to take plays off last year and regressed terribly from his rookie year and Newman has never really been an elite cover corner. There also is a big need at right tackle with a deep class at the position in this draft after the Cowboys struggled to run the ball. There are plenty of mauling right tackles that could make an immediate difference and help Dallas run the ball with Felix Jones and Marion Barber. I have the Cowboys taking Anthony Castonzo in my mock draft. I think any of the top tackles or Amukamara would be great options with that pick. There aren’t many top flight safeties in this draft, but I think the Cowboys ought to take a look at someone in the second round as an upgrade over Gerald Sensabaugh or Alan Ball. Overall, a great and well researched post and I think Dallas could use an upgrade at any and all of these positions.

Right Tackle is the biggest need

Marc Colombo was credited with 9.5 (NINE AND A HALF!!!) sacks last year! Against MIN and IND the team actually abandoned both the run and the passing game because the line couldn’t be counted on to give the QB 3 seconds and they couldn’t open holes. Instead, it was all tosses, pitches, and passes to the RBs in the flat.

Furthermore, the FA class for OTs is terrible this season and the best tackle candidate on the roster is a 6th round draft pick from last year.

The Cowboys have to come out of this draft with a starting right tackle or they will be right back to 6-10 in 2011.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your Sugar Bowl champions... and for the 7th year in a row Michigan still sucks.
